Fighting evil isn’t only high-stress, no pay, and uncomfortable as hell most of the time, it also doesn’t turn out to be quite as black and white as Maya would have hoped. As a hybrid angel struggling to control her murderous appetite, Maya should know better than to expect simplicity. With one half-brother still convinced that she’s an unstable threat and the other oblivious to the danger she presents, Maya struggles to find a balance between her diminished humanity and the darkness of the monster within. The world gets murkier when Maya discovers a pair of angels who invite her into their lives. Now, she must choose between family or the promise of acceptance. The stakes grow higher when Maya’s greatest enemy returns. Vengeance may be within her grasp, but will Maya have to sacrifice one she loves to take it? Landing is J Bennett's action-packed, darkly-humorous sequel to Falling, and the second book in the paranormal adventure series, Girl With Broken Wings Series. And yes, there will be plenty more Chuck Norris jokes.
J Bennett lives and writes in San Diego. Her writing partner is a bunny named Avalon who contributes to each manuscript by trying to eat it. His adorableness is his primary strength as a writer.
J Bennett is a professional copywriter and an author who loves asking that oh-so-dangerous question – “What if?” She currently writes a paranormal adventure series, Girl With Broken Wings, and a tongue-in-cheek short story series, The Vampire’s Housekeeper Chronicles, featuring a very old, very grouchy, very non-sparkly vampire and his patient housekeeper.
This story keeps getting more twisted and amazing. Every single time you think the story is going in one way, it goes in another. The characters are deep and flawed and intriguing, with just enough sarcasm, mystery, and charisma to keep all fans and readers happy. Tarren is still the character I pine for...for him to find tranquility and happiness and hope. I can't wait to jump into Rising next!
Quite possibly my favorite in this Girl with broken wings series, Landing is full of surprising twists and an epic battle scene for Maya and her half brothers Gabe and Tarren.
There is a definite closure for Maya as she reconciles her half angel status with her new family, finally revealing how much more angel she is than human.
But the end of Landing hints of more battles to come, and this time the hunters — Maya, Gabe and Tarren — will become the hunted.
This second novel in the series is even more riveting and compelling than the first novel, and the novella which follows it. In fact, I would say that Bennett has surpassed herself in this installment!
The saga of Maya the hybrid 'angel' (actually an energy vampire) and her vigilante half-brothers is seriously addictive reading! In Landing, the relationship of the three siblings becomes even more poignant, as the reader learns further details about their family history, and they are thrown into even more danger.
Maya is a totally admirable character; she's constantly fighting against the hunger -- that insatiable desire to 'feed' on energy from humans, killing them in the process. She manages to get by through draining small animals, but the hunger for human energy is always present, tormenting her. In spite of her situation, she's courageous, funny, snarky, and strongly loyal to her brothers, insisting on joining them on all their missions. She's definitely a great heroine!
I didn't think it was possible to love Gabe even more than I already did, but, in this novel, his kindness and endless sweetness toward Maya just made me want to hug him! His implicit trust in her is very touching, especially since he knows she could destroy him if she ever lost control. His easygoing, laid-back attitude, in the face of their family tragedy, is absolutely wonderful! Unlike Tarren, Gabe wears his heart on his sleeve. Maya, who can see human auras, can read him much more easily than she can Tarren, who keeps a very tight rein on his emotions.
As for Tarren, I have very mixed feelings about him. It seemed that he was beginning to trust Maya more in Coping, the novella in this series. However, this is really not the case at all; his attitude toward her remains one of cautious tolerance. He never fully lets her in, so she can only catch glimpses of what he must be feeling. He's even willing to risk her life at one point in the plot, against Gabe's vehement protests. So I found myself alternately disliking him, and then feeling sorry for him. After all, he has suffered at the hands of the heinous villain in these books -- terribly so. Still, his actions toward Maya are really unforgivable. In this novel, the reader finds out just how deeply he has betrayed her, simply because he's in pursuit of revenge.
Two new characters are introduced in this installment -- a married couple, Kyle and Jane. They're both 'angels'. Maya meets them one night, after she and her brothers have returned from an unsuccessful mission.
These characters are very likable, paradoxically enough. They want to take Maya under their wing, and she almost gives in, just so she can feel totally accepted and loved. However, she realizes that Kyle is trying to rationalize the 'angel' lifestyle by telling her that she should only drain people who really 'deserve' it, like criminals, or people who are already dying. She knows that killing a human being is wrong, no matter how you try to justify it. Her condition as a hybrid -- not completely human, yet, not fully an 'angel' -- helps her to resist the lure of this evil.
The action really ratchets up in this novel, as the siblings finally confront the villain -- Grand. In the process, the reader encounters his very sick, disgusting, views toward the humans who have not been 'enhanced'. This is a villain you love to hate; the thoughts of this most nefarious 'angel' mirror those of Hitler and his Nazis in their contempt for 'inferior people'. Indeed, this warped philosophy is also behind the eugenics movement. Bennett is thus implicitly criticizing it, and I admire her for doing so.
This novel, like the previous books in this series, has very profound philosophical implications underlying its action-filled plot. It's also a great example of masterful, suspenseful writing. Furthermore, it's peopled by very vivid, fully fleshed-out characters whose struggles and emotions we the readers come to feel and understand as if we were also going through the same things.
Powerfully intense, stunningly compelling, this is a novel that will not let readers go until the very last page is turned! Bennett fully immerses the reader in her terrifying, totally believable world, and she does so with remarkable ease.
These characters will remain completely unforgettable to me, even after I've finished reading the last novel in the series, Rising, which I am planning to purchase just as soon as I possibly can! In all honesty, I simply can't praise these books enough, in spite of their very dark themes, and the bleakness of this future, dystopian world. Still, hope remains ever present, and evil will not get the upper hand. In the final analysis, this is what's truly important. Kudos to J. Bennett for her imaginative portrayal of the darkness, as well as the light, within the human soul!

I love these books, but it lacks something that I love, which is a love interest. I know she still loves Ryan and it’s going to be while for her to get over him. I just want a little spark and we maybe get that in this one. She thinks about this one guy, but its fleeting. Anyways enough talk about love. Maya and her brothers are still on the hunt for angels and things are still stressed between them. Tarren still wants to kill her and Gabe is well Gabe, trusting. So many things so down in this book I can’t keep them straight. We learn more about the boy’s childhood and Tammy. We learn more about angels and Maya finally confesses, to what you have to read the books. There was a lot of laughing and crying during this book, but mostly laughing. Gabe and Maya sure know how to make you laugh. The crying parts though; UGH I thought it was….I can’t speak of it. Just know that I cried and the boys cried and just leave it at that.
The books ended leaves much to the imagination. I can’t wait to see what happens. I know things are never going to be the same with the three of them though. At the end of the book everyone is changed. It leaves a lot of questions as well. One being that is someone still alive *cue intense music* I’m really curious. I think we learn more about Tarren in this book than anything. I loved getting to know him and I can’t help but to like him and hate him. Maya is still struggling with her hunger and wants more than anything to be accepted by Tarren and not screw up a hunt. Gabe is just full of life; nothing can really get him down, well not for long. He is what holds them all together, but what happens if he is not there anymore?
Overall: Landing was full of excitement, surprises, sadness, and laughter. What a combination. If you are a fan of Chuck Norris jokes, hunters, and angels this book is for you.
This was a great sequel. It brought back old rivals. What I liked the most was that Maya was also battling her inner demons. She had to pick between embracing her new self, or trying to stay as much like her old self as she could. This decision not only affects her future, but the future of her loved ones. When one of her loved ones is faced with death, because of her, Maya realizes what she needs to do. This was a fast read for me, and I really liked Maya. liked her more in this book, because I am really getting to know her. I also liked the secondary characters, and thought that they were great additions to the plot. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.
Nice finish to a fun, action-packed series! It was nice getting to know these three characters and watch their personalities develop through the series. The one thing this series is not lacking is - action. There is lots of it. I think this book (and the whole series) has lots of teen apeal.
This book was a little slower, especially at first than the others, but was still a good and worth while read. It did pick up towards the middle and got much more interesting and fun. This was not my favorite series but I still enjoyed reading it and do think others, especially teens would like it (probably better than me, since this is not my typical read).
I received this ebook for a honest review. All I can say is the Girl With The Broken Wing series is great! Landing is the second of this series and it's so good. The relationship between Maya and her half-brothers is complicated. One seems to hate her and the other seems to love her. What they go through together and alone will make you sad and happy. This book gets me very emotional. I can't wait to read #3! Thanks J.
Continuing the anguishing, impossible battles against the growing population of angels...and the search for Grand. This book had me jumping excitedly and grinning when various folks made it through unwinnable scenarios and came out on top, or not, getting their just desserts!
Also, I laugh at every single Chuck Norris joke - can't get enough of them. That's probably the main part of Gabe that I identify with - his humor. Otherwise, I tend to be more like Tarren.
J Bennett has created such an amazing gripping series. I absolutely LOVE these books. As an avid reader it's pretty difficult to surprise me. But I honestly didn't see some things coming. Great story. Great series. Amazing creativity. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
