ENG: Jari Järvelä has written novels, short stories, essays, radio plays and plays. He currently resides at Kotka, living between the ocean and a river, likes both cities on harbours and train stations. His favourite cities are Napoli and Marseille, in both of which nothing is working yet everything works out, everybody believes in miracles and not for nothing. His hobbies include swimming, wines and history (even the one that can be found on a roadside or on rusty tin cans on an old fridge on an attic). Most of all, Järvelä is into punk music and paintings from 1500's renaissance, both of which most of his friends dislike strongly. Both of them include that frenzied indulging which makes art something more than life, or at least more sensible.

Unlike anything I have read; Finnish noir based around the youthful exploits of graffiti artists and the security employed to stop such anti-social activity.
It is how two lives are changed across this divide, told in the first person, alternating from one to the other, often speaking about similiar action but from their own point of view.
It is a thrilling account of loss, revenge, betrayal and lost dreams. How we can label and see things from only one standpoint; how ones actions can ultimately damage your whole life.
There are some interesting points about societies and how creativity is perhaps viewed; we see how normal aspirations can be sidetracked and easily one can become an instrument of destruction. Is each person responsible for themselves or quilty by association?
I enjoyed the story enormously; the different development of character through opposing eyes and the deeper message the narrative kept bringing to the reader's mind.
The story progresses at pace but never predictively you care for the characters and fear for the outcome both become bent on seeking.
In a novel where absent Fathers seem to influence their children long after they are no longer around it seems ironic that Jere holding down a good job brings so much trouble to his own door. We are introduced to him playing a fantasy game of his son's invention with lego pieces but soon the reader comes to see that real life is more brutal still.
A rare delight in that this is a book to take you out of your own comfort zone and make you think while being fully engrossed and entertained.

First half of the book was slow and I didn't feel I took much away from it. Second half had a faster pace, and I wanted to know what was going to happen.

Metro was creative in her actions and a smart character. I understood Jere's frustration, the house, the family.

Overall it was a decent read and I would be willing to read more from this author.

Mahtava trilleri! Ihan huikea! Luin tämän melkein 2 viikkoa sitten ja hengitys alkaa olla nyt tasaantunut. En meinannut päästä nukkumaan tai töihin, kun tämä kirja vei niin mennessään.

Aihe oli minulle vieras ja varmaan vähän erikoisempi, mutta se ei haitannut lainkaan. Minulle suuri plussa oli tutut Kotkan maisemat. Juonenkäänteet olivat sopivan odottamattomia ja tarinan seuraaminen kahdesta eri näkökulmasta loi hahmojen välille mielenkiintoisella tavalla jännitettä. Ehdottomasti luen tämän uudelleen ja odotan innolla trilogian seuraavia osia.

Jaksoin puoleen väliin. En käsitä tällaista "jännäriä", jossa tapahtumat käynnistävä kuolema tapahtuu vasta kun kirjasta luettu 1/3, ja tämän ensimmäisen säkenöivä jännittävä osa kestää reaaliajassa n. 30 min! Vasta kirjan puolessa välissä tyttö aloittaa paljon mainostetun kostonsa, melko kesysti.. En juuri lue dekkareita, joten luulin olleeni nokkela kun valitsin perus-kaunossa kunnostautuneen kirjailijan dekkarin. Ilmeisesti jännitysgenre on oma taiteenlajinsa..

Tyttö ja pommi yllätti koukuttavuudellaan. Graffititaiteilijoiden ja turvallisuusvalvojien valtataistossa puoli on helppo valita, sillä Järvelän kerronnassa sympatiat kallistuvat graffitiporukan suuntaan. Yhteiskuntakuva ei ole kaunis eivätkä ihmiset mukavia, paikoin teksti on jopa raakaa, mutta ei liian. Kiinnostava rikosromaani Kotkasta, hyvä uusi kirjailijatuttavuus.

Parikymppinen Metro ja hänen poikaystävänsä Rust maalaavat graffiteja Kotkassa. Eräänä yönä onni ei kuitenkaan suosi rohkeaa. Vartijat yllättävät kaksikon ratapihalla. Syntyy kiivas takaa-ajo, joka päättyy kohtalokkaasti merikeskus Vellamon katolle. Metro näkee kauhukseen, miten eräs vartijoista sysää tahallaan Rustin alas rakennuksen katolta. Nuorta naista ajaa siitä lähtien eteenpäin ainoastaan yksi ajatus.

"Ihmisen ainoa todellinen perustarve on kosto. Se voi elää ilman ruokaa, ilman unta ja ilman seksiä, jos sen on vallannut kostonhimo., Kosto tarjoaa ihmiselle luonnolisen ravinnon, levon ja ilmaiset orgasmit. Kosto on rakkauttakin voimakkaampi. Kun rakkaus kuolee, kosto jää. Vaikka mä puhuisin ihmisten ja enkelten kielelläö, mutta multa puuttuisi kosto, olisin vain kumiseva vaski tai helisevä symbaali. Kosto on kärsivällinen, kosto on lempeä. Kosto ei kadehdi, ei kersku, ei pöyhkeile. Kosto ei iloitse vääryydestä vaan iloitsee totuuden voittaessa. Valitettavasti syyttävä sormi kohdistuu vain väärään ihmiseen. Vartiointiliikkeen palkkalistoilla oleva Jere ei ole syyllinen kylmäveriseen tekoon, mutta joutuu nyt säälimättömän vihanpidon kohteeksi. Ensimmäisenä kyytiä saa hänen autonsa, sitten hänen omakotitalonsa - ja se on vasta alkua. Vähempikin voi ajaa miehen hulluuden partaalle. Se johtaa säälimättömään koston kierteeseen.

Jari Järvelän "Tyttö ja pommi" (Crime Time, 2014) valikoitui mukaani kirjaston hyllystä kuulemieni kehujen perusteella kun etsiskelin sopivaa kotimaista luettavaa yläkoululaisten vinkkauksia varten. Lupaavalta näyttikin noin aluksi. Kohtalokkaaseen putoamiseen päättyvä takaa-ajo oli ihan mukaansatempaava ja pidin myös siitä, että tapahtumista kerrotaan niin Metron kuin Jeren näkökulmasta. Järvelä onnistui myös valottamaan kohtalaisen hyvin graffitikulttuuria.

Ei tämä silti oikein minuun kolahtanut. Suurimmaksi ongelmaksi muodostui romaanin epäuskottavuus. En oikein vakuuttunut vartiointiliikkeen työntekijöiden ja graffitinmaalaajien äärimmilleen kärjistetystä vastakkainasettelusta, etenkin kun ensiksimainitut tuntuivat mielivaltaisine otteineen olevan lähtöisin jostakin totalitaarisesta dystopiasta. Sivuhenkilöt olivat myös vähän vaisuja, enkä ihan täysin vakuuttunut heidän motiiveistaan. Lopun lukaisinkin aika välinpitämättömästi.

Luulen silti, että saan tämän aika helposti kaupaksi yläkoululaisille!

Muistan himmeästi ajan joskus 2000-luvun alussa kun mediassa kohistiin varsin vaimeasti graffitteja tehtailevien tahojen toimista esimerkiksi VR:n kalustoon kohdistuvissa iskuissa. Samaan aikaan sai myös palstatilaa ja ruutuaikaa mielipiteidenvaihdossa graffittien tekijöitä jahtaavat vartiointiliikkeet työntekijöineen. Ylilyönneistä etenkin vartiointiliikkeiden suunnalta oletettujen tekijöiden suhteen raportoitiin myös toisinaan.

Tämä teos kuvaa jännärimäisesti eräiden graffitteja maalaavien henkilöiden uhkarohkeaa yöelämää harrastuksensa parissa sekä sen seuraamuksia niin heitä jahtaaville tahoille kuin itselleenkin. Pääosissa tosiaan vartiointiliikkeen työntekijä(t) ja vastapuolella kostonhimoinen nuori graffitteja tehtaileva nainen.

On aluksi todettava että tämä on jännityselokuvamainen ja sikäli kerronnaltaan etenkin alussa ihan sujuvasti eteenpäin soljuva. Kerronta tarinassa on kahden minäkertojan varassa, joista toinen on tosiaan töhrijöitä työkseen jahtaava tavallisen perheenisän muotokuva vartijana ja toinen puoli sitten itse pahamaisen paikallisen "töhrijäsolun" naispuoleinen sotajalalle vartijoita vastaan lähtevä taiteilijasielu.

Kun pääsin ylitse kirjan keskikohdan, niin tunsin sinällään ihan hyvin kasassa pysyneen juonen kuitenkin ottaneen alun ihan varmoista lähtökohdista aikamoisen harppauksen paikoitellen epäuskottavuuden puolelle. Tietyt varsinkin naispuoleiselle hahmolle tapahtuneet käänteet eivät vaikuttaneet aivan todellisilta, vaikka siihen asti kirja olikin esittänyt asioita ihan uskottavasti hahmojen kehitykseen liittyen.

Teos oli ihan viihdyttävä erityisesti alussa kun juonta rakennettiin. Loppua kohden kuitenkin teosta oli selkeästi vaikeaa lopettaa kunniakkaasti eli uskottavasti, mutta yritystä siinä kuitenkin oli.

The Girl and the Bomb takes place within a subculture totally unfamiliar to me. Two, actually: a ring of graffiti artists in Kotka, Finland, and the security guards who try to catch them. Each group has their own lingo, camaraderie, egos and rivalries. The story begins with an overzealous security raid leading to a graffiti artist's death, and alternates perspectives between one of the officers and the artist's girlfriend, who was with him and witnessed the altercation. Both characters are likable people who end up doing terrible things to others. I was particularly interested in the psychological examination of the security guard, Jere. He's presented, at first, as a hardworking family man just trying to do his job. But as his personal life begins unraveling, his house is vandalized in retaliation for the raid, and he is passed over for promotion at work, frustration begins boiling over into destructive tenancies. His character arc followed a twisted descent into the depravity and mayhem of the underground world Metro seems unable to escape.

From word go I was aware of the plot's whiteboard and could see the arrows and boxes. The situation was too simple, and yet too hard to believe. The characters were limited in doing what their one paragraph outline would suggest. The telling of the the tale was aerie of 'he said she said' tram line chapters. The technique adds pages and nothing more.
The book was something that looked as if the outline took half am hour to draft. The writing an exercise in coloring by numbers.
I continued reading hoping it got better. It didn't.

I am a huge fan of the Nordic lands so decided to try and find some literature and this book was recommended, probably one of the most interesting novels I have ever read.

There are two books in this series and they are fantastic, so much so I actually contacted the author to thank him for his work.

It has art, suspense, revenge and love rolled up in a dark and insightful look at life growing up in Finland.

Buy this book.

I was interested in this book because it was popular enough to be translated from Finnish, and was for 'those who like Steg Larrson style books.' As a result, I signed up for the Goodreads First Reads and was lucky enough to receive the novel in return for an honest review.

When I first started reading this novel, I was highly interested, but also a bit weary because I have noticed that many of the Scandinavian Authors have a tendency to attempt to discuss socio-political issues within their novels, often to the degradation of the plot. Luckily The Girl with the The Bomb didn't have this particular issue. However, what I am still not sure of, having finished the novel, is what the commentary was about specifically. Or, the authors viewpoint on Graffiti and Tagging as a whole (NOTE: I will attempt to differentiate between the concepts of Graffiti as art vs. Tagging as an illegal activity).

*SPOILERS*

You might be thinking therefore, that perhaps there isn't any socio-political commentary in this novel, but you would be far from correct. One of the things that is very obvious is this novel is all about societal commentary. Right from the beginning, when you are introduced to the two narrators Metro and Jere, they are each discussing the different viewpoints of Graffiti art. Metro is a Tagger who goes out with her partner Rust to place her art on the surfaces of the city, in areas where the urban landscape is lacking of color or abandoned and falling apart; tagging, making graffiti art and looking to avoid the Rats. Jere is a Security Officer (Rat) who's job is to stop the Bacteria (Taggers/Graffiti Artists) from putting their Smudges (Tags/Art) on the trains. The book gets right into the moment, when Metro and Rust are working on Train's, but have been working in the middle of a sting that is being put on by Jere and his co-workers.

As the trap is sprung, and the action ensues, Rust is murdered by one of the Security Guards. However, the main character of Jere and his co-workers cover it up, and set off a serious of events that leave no individual untouched in a negative way. Metro decides to take revenge on Jere who, of all those involved was the least guilty, but chooses to not tell the truth and has his name on the police report.

Throughout the story, the characters are constantly commenting on the negative aspects of Finnish society: racism (Metro is Black), low employment, education, single parent families, and urban decay. In addition, is the commentary on the politics of Graffiti in Finland and other European countries. As the book progresses and the story continues to the inevitable negative consequences that evolve, we are treated to the bleakness of the modern urban Finland, and the tragedy that comes from death and the moral choices that each of the two narrators takes. The book is almost a traditional noir, and for that reason alone it was able to hold my attention and is highly worth reading.

Now, although, I have given the novel 4 stars, there are some things that annoyed me and kept me from giving this book 5. My problem basically boils down to the Jere character and his choices and his justifications. As soon as it becomes obvious that he is being targeted by Metro it never occurs to him that he should tell the truth. He places all the blame for the things that are happening on other people, but rather than owning up to his lie and letting others suffer for the consequences of their actions; rather, he ends up paying for Metro's justifiable anger and the mistakes of everyone else. Now, this may be realistic of individuals, but it is not what he does, but rather his own internal monologue stupidity that annoys me. Regardless, I do think this is a book worth reading.

Järvelän esikoisdekkarilla on kaksi päähenkilöä: graffiteja maalaava tyttö nimeltä Metro sekä töhertäjiä metsästävä vartija Jere. Metro kutsuu Jeren kaltaisia Rotiksi, Jere Metron kaltaisia Bakteereiksi. Vastakkainasettelun aika ei ole todellakaan ohi. Tarinan tragikoominen ja kuolemaa karttamaton kulku tuo mieleen Coen-veljesten rikosleffojen maailman. Ehkäpä kotkalaiskirjailija on katsonut niitä ennen palkittua hypähdystään rikoskirjallisuuteen.

Pomminvarmasti mukanaan vievän kirjan miinukseksi on laskettava, että päähenkilö Metrossa on hyvin (lue: liian) paljon samaa kuin Järvelän Mistä on mustat tytöt tehty? -kirjan (2009) naistähdessä, punkkariuteen taipuvaisessa nuohooja Rööri Hämähäkissä. Samaisen kirjan loistavuus sekä jämptin innokas sanataiteilu laimentavat "pommitytön" Banksy-seikkailua parilla pykälällä.

I was awarded this book through GoodReadsI found this book predictable both in dialogue and plot. The method used was one that we used as college freshmen: the thoughts and words of the two characters, their perspectives, in alternating chapters.The characters were flat, two dimensional. The main character Metro (one of the Bacteria that decorate the world with illegal graffiti) feels no qualms in killing, no sorrow let alone in causing the death of an unborn child nor the revenge killing of the wrong man. Her counterpart among the Rats ( the people that chase down the Bacteria) also has no qualms of conscience in causing death. The only person with concerns about his wife, child, the unjust killing is killed by Metro. Meh.

Tyttö ja pommi oli dekkariksi kiva ja viihdyttävä. Heti luettuani olisin varmaan antanut kolme tähteä, mutta unohdin merkitä. Nyt viikkoa myöhemmin on vaikeaa löytää mitään sanottavaa kirjasta, eli kovin mieleenpainuva se ei ole.

Kaksi tähteä, koska luin kirjan mielelläni ja kiinnostuin henkilöiden kohtaloista, mutta todennäköisesti unohtaisin lukeneeni sen ilman Goodreadsia. Kertakäyttökirjallisuutta lomaviikonlopulle, pokkari jonka ostaa, lukee ja jättää sitten seuraavalle noukittavaksi puistonpenkiltä.

This was okay but I won't be rushing to read the follow up. The book flips between two perspectives which works well for it, and the writing is easy to follow.

I didn't find the story brought enough to it for me - somewhat interesting but didn't really build any suspense, or make me want to read on. It's generally a pretty straight forward book without too many surprises. It'll do if you want to read a sequence of events but if you're after something meaty or thrilling i'd probably opt for something else.

I really enjoyed this short, sharp, clever novel, with its alternating points of view. I liked both of the characters, Metro and Jere, and wished that they weren't on opposing sides and that there would be an explanation and a 'happy ending' of sorts. But of course no such happy ending is possible when violence, accusations and misunderstandings escalate. An intriguing peek into an urban subculture, as well as a deep-dive under the seemingly serene surface of Finnish society to the murkiness below.

Välillä piti pitää taukoa ja viedä herkkä aivosoluni happihyppelylle koska auts ja eww taas tätä väkivaltaa…, mutta tarina on hyvä ja tempo on intensiivinen. Tapahtumia seurataan sekä 19-vuotiaan graffititaiteilijan Metron että vartijana työskentelevän nuoren perheenisän Jeren kertomana. Kirjassa hiippaillaan, paetaan ja yritetään elää nykypäivän Kotkassa, joka on pienen kesäretken verran (eli aika rahtusen mut kummiskin) tuttu, mikä toi itselleni huomattavasti kiinnostavuutta ja elävyyttä tähän lukukokemukseen. Synkkä mutta ihan vakuuttava trilogian aloitus.

Toisaalta pohdin taas Kotkan murretta - mikä hemmetin tarve kotkalaisilla on aina käydä tekemään jotain? - ja ärsyynnyin selvästi onnettomasta oikoluvusta johtuvista keskeneräisistä lauseista. Ihailen ja ihmettelen, mistä Jari Järvelä oli tämänkin aiheen saanut. Toki seinät ovat tageja ja graffiteja täynnä, mutta silti. Voisi kuvitella, että hän on itsekin yksi Bakteereista.
Hirveästi tykkäsin. Myös Järvelä pysyy lukulistani kärjessä jatkossakin.

I received a free copy of this in a Goodreads Giveaway, and was pretty excited about it.

The book lived up to the expectations. The plot is solid and the characters are interesting. I don't read a whole lot of crime novels, but this one did it for me. I liked that the writing was simple, clear, and easy to follow. I find that isn't always the case with translated work.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves a good revenge story. 4.5/5 stars.

This was a tight, surprising little thriller. It took me a little while to get a feel for the setting ("What is this, a police state dystopia?"), but the characters won me over right away. The alternating viewpoints of the two protagonists, Metro and Jere, are memorable and compelling. The translation is fantastic; it never reads like a translation. I'm glad the plot did justice to these complex and deeply flawed characters.
