BENTORNATO MARCO, AMICO DI SEMPRE

description

description

description

this is my 2nd Carlotto book read (first was "the Fugitive") and though he has rave reviews and it IS PRETTY good noir, i feel the plots are weak and characters are thin. sorry massimo, but i like my noir like izzo, not james patterson. hahahaha

“This was underworld business: it was a mathematical certainty that it was going to end badly… Somebody was going to die. That was the only thing we knew for sure as the car raced eastward in the night.”

It starts with a kidnapping that makes little sense, and moves nonstop into one of the most enjoyable literary treats I’ve read this year. Even though this crime novel is serious business, there’s an air of humor that surrounds a trio of ex-cons and bad guys that are called in to solve the crime. Yep, these guys, having paid their dues as tough guys and retired from that life of crime, now just want to sit back and drink Calvados, eat pasta, and listen to the blues. Except for the lead, Marco Buratti, who also happens to be addicted to home shopping television shows.

The action is non-stop as it crosses through Italy and into the Balkans as the three men try to solve two mysteries. They had previously got involved in a hit that went wrong, the moral of which was, “know who you do business for and why before you shoot someone.” Since they didn’t obey that rule, they have to backtrack and solve that before the kidnapped woman can be found.

The characters that they run into are just that: characters. Carlotto makes them memorable, with little clues that make them feel much more complicated than just a simple definition of “bad guy”. Drug smugglers have egos and their own tragic flaws, of which these experienced searchers exploit, while at the same time they lament,

“Why do Mafiosi always seem to have one useless son?”

This leads to an amusing conversation as they analyze The Godfather and The Sopranos to point out just which characters were intellectually-challenged. The rapport between the three is priceless, as they unquestionably back each other up, which would seem unlikely for the world they live in. And what a world that is, when drug smuggling and police corruption is impossibly powerful, with so many innocents thrown into the conflict.

I can’t even begin to explain why this book was so much fun, given the subject matter was serious and at times, appalling. Perhaps it’s the universal simplicities that unite everyone-good or bad-the power of a good meal? A view of the sea? The comfort of a regular table at the trattoria?

“Can I say that I love you?”
“Certainly not. You need to keep that to yourself. You’d ruin everything.”

Third in the Alligator noir novels, as Marco, Max and Rossini more than meet their match with someone who wants to hurt them.

Pacy, hard hitting, with witticisms, eccentricities, and tough, bandit love.

PROTAGONIST: Marco "The Alligator" Buratti
SETTING: Italy
SERIES: #7 of 7 (3 in English)
RATING: 3.25

He’s an unlikely (and unlicensed) private investigator. An ex-con, Mario “the Alligator” Buratti could easily be mistaken for one of the criminals that he is pursuing. He’s in partnership with two other guys, Beniamino Rossini and Max la Memoria, who have rather dubious pasts themselves. Marco and Max have been trying to go straight and are co-owners of a bar named La Cuccia. Max loves to cook; Marco has been living a quiet law-abiding life. But all that changes when Rossini’s belly-dancing girlfriend, Sylvie, is kidnapped. Of the three men, Rossini is the most dangerous. He’s the one that doesn’t hesitate to kill someone if required. And now he’s on a quest to find Sylvie, and Marco and Max have no option but to join him.

What they get into is a real mess. At various times, they are dealing with the Kosovar Mafia, Serbian organized crime and a group who masterminded the theft of drugs from a laboratory storeroom. A clue left in Sylvie’s car indicates that the grab has a connection with a man that Rossini killed two years earlier, a man who was highly placed in the Mafia. They learn from a Serbian gangster that Sylvie is being held in a “gang bang” house, where she is forced into performing sexual acts. Finally, they are able to find and release her; but she is never again the same woman, which initiates another round of revenge on her behalf.

All in all, the plot is overly complicated and confusing to follow. There are a lot of players in the various games going on, plus the book occurs over a period of five years. Carlotto also spends quite a bit of time describing the various political situations, and that sometimes came across as an authorial intrusion rather than a necessary part of the narrative.

The saving grace of the book is the depiction of the relationship of Marco, Max and Rossini and the development of their individual characters. The love and loyalty of the three friends is paramount; it is unthinkable that one of them could have a problem that the other two wouldn’t help to resolve. Max seems laid back, but is an excellent planner and loves nothing better than to cook a meal for his friends. Rossini is an old style gangster who doesn’t hesitate to step over the line whenever necessary. The Alligator loves listening to blues and drinking Calvados and has an interesting way of viewing life. For example, when working on a divorce case, he offers advice to the guilty party so that the spouse being deceived won’t become suspicious. He’s been notably unsuccessful at relationships with women, currently involved with an informer prostitute that his friends can’t stand and his theoretical true love, who is married.

Massimo Carlotto has been dubbed “the reigning king of Mediterranean noir”. Three of the seven Alligator books have been translated into English. My favorite so far is THE COLOMBIAN MULE. All of the books have a strong sense of moral ambiguity, with the main characters using rather unorthodox methods, committing crimes of their own, including murder, to achieve their goals.

Don’t waste your time on this piece of drek. About as engaging and complex as the Sunday comics. Completely implausible, totally without meaningful character development, lacking any compelling insight into the characters. A superficial, cardboard cutout of a book.

Hard-boiled, fast-paced Italian crime novel that features Marco "The Alligator" Buratti, a blues-loving retired mobster who is now a private eye with his two friends. The plot involves the investigation of a drug heist that is later linked to the kidnapping of the girlfriend of Buratti's friend. The book is reminiscent of the 30's novels of Hammett and Chandler: lean, grim, and violent. It paints a sleazy, amoral picture of Italy, which has been flooded with drugs from Eastern Europe.

Bel ritmo come sempre, ben scritto come sempre.

Pretty good Italian crime novel as the Alligator and his cronies seek revenge against whoever kidnapped and exploited Old Rossini’s lover. Finding Sylvia is pretty straightforward but afterwards there’s an incredibly complicated plot against interlocking Kosovo and Serbian crime families. The theme of “things ain’t like they used to be” for criminals and everyone else persists. As does a sharp left wing critique of the corruption of Italian life and politics.

Finale a sorpresa.
Da leggere.
