1937. Το σοβιετικό καθεστώς λεηλατεί, βγάζει στο σφυρί και καταστρέφει θησαυρούς της Ρωσικής Εκκλησίας. Κλείνει αµέτρητα μοναστήρια. Εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες ιερείς και μοναχοί εκτελούνται. Οι πιο τυχεροί γλιτώνουν ζώντας κρυµµένοι στα δάση.

Από τα τελευταία χρόνια του Μεσοπολέµου ως τις µέρες µας, από τη Ρωσία των μπολσεβίκων ως τη Μόσχα των δισεκατοµµυριούχων ολιγαρχών και των εντυπωσιακών αιθουσών τέχνης, εκτυλίσσεται η θαυµαστή περιπέτεια αυτών των θαρραλέων όσο και παράτολµων ανθρώπων.
Υπάρχει βέβαια και η Ιρίνα, που δραπετεύει από την κόλαση, διασχίζει την Ευρώπη, φτάνει στο Παρίσι, αλλάζει ταυτότητα... Μια γυναίκα που βρίσκεται στο επίκεντρο αυτής της ανεπανάληπτης ιστορίας αντίστασης και λύτρωσης.

About the author

Metin Arditi is a French-speaking Swiss writer of Turkish origin. He left Turkey at the age of seven. After spending eleven years in a Swiss boarding school in Lausanne, he studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in physics and a postgraduate degree in nuclear engineering. He continued his studies at Stanford Business School, where he got an MBA. He lives in Geneva, where he is very involved in the cultural and artistic life of the city. From 2000 to 2013 he was Chairman of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (O.S.R.). He is a member of the Strategic Council of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, where over the years he taught physics (Assistant to Prof. Mercier), economics and management (as lecturer) and creative writing (as Visiting Professor). In 1988, he created the Arditi Foundation which awards fifteen annual prizes to graduates of the University of Geneva and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The Arditi Foundation has purchased and offered to the University of Geneva a landmark theater, the Cinema Manhattan, now called Auditorium Fondation Arditi. He is the founder of " The Instruments of Peace Foundation ", which offers musical education to children of Palestine and Israel. He is a member of the Foundation Board of the Music Conservatory of Geneva. He chaired the Building Committee of the Martin Bodmer Museum in Cologny. In December 2012, Metin Arditi was appointed UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. In June 2014, UNESCO appointed him Special Envoy. In September 2014, he created the Arditi Foundation for Intercultural Dialogue.

Γενικά διαβάζω οτιδήποτε πέσει στα χέρια μου. Από καζαμία μέχρι φιλοσοφία. Ακόμη και τα σχολικά βιβλία της κόρης μου.
Δεν έχω πρόβλημα με κανένα βιβλίο, αρκεί να είναι τίμιο σε αυτό που θέλει και μπορεί να σου δώσει.
Εδώ δυστυχώς δεν βρήκα τίποτα. Ενώ το θέμα του βιβλίου μπορεί να γίνει συναρπαστικό, ο συγγραφέας το χειρίζεται τόσο άσχημα - με εξαίρεση ίσως ελάχιστα σημεία προς το τέλος - που μόλις το διαβάσεις μένεις με την αίσθηση ότι απλώς έχασες κάποιες ώρες από τη ζωή σου.
Δεν θα το πρότεινα.

I had a great deal of trouble finishing this book. I'm shocked it won the Prix. I was enthralled by the first half, which was set in Bolshevik Russia. The second half read like a different novel, with different characters and concerns; unfortunately I did not feel drawn to them as I was to those in the first half of the book. Dommage.

La premisse de ce livre m'avait beaucoup attiré, surtout après avoir découvert Arditi avec Le turquetto. Malheureusement, même si j'ai bien aimé l'histoire, je n'ai pas eu les mêmes émotions à la lecture de ce roman.

Metin Arditi was born in Turkey where he lived until the age of eleven. Then Switzerland became his homeland, where he studied and continues to live. He is a University professor, a musician, a supporter of the arts and a writer, but above all he is a philanthropist.

“The brotherhood of flying monks” is a book about Nicodemus, Russia and the great Russian Church. At the time of the Bolsheviks, the Russian Orthodox Churches are being vandalized. The priests and the monks are being killed to extinction and the great artifacts and the pieces of art that are the heritage of the faith are being destroyed.

A monk that lives in a distance from it’s monastery, deep in the woods, finds himself alive and away from all this monstrosity. He is an eremite that has not been used to living with his brothers. As the massacres go on, two of his brothers live to tell him that their monastery is now gone. Nicodemus is devastated but he has to think of himself and his brothers and so the fly away as soon as possible. After some time, they reach a location of an old mine and they find a few abandoned cabins. There they settle and they welcome their brothers in the run. As their number turns to twelve, they become the brotherhood of flying monks, dedicated to save the sacred artifacts from the Bolsheviks’ fury.

Years’ later, the saved artifacts are found again, and they are restored to their initial glory. The Russian people are proud of their faith, or at least most of them as there are groups that oppose to this whole story. Nicodemus is declared a neo martyr by the Russian Church for the brotherhood’s activities and for the fact that he died as a martyr taking all the blame for taking the artifacts away and hiding them.

Première partie très intéressante. La suite l'était moins... Bizarrement le style ne convenait plus, tout allait trop vite, tout était trop simple, je ne me suis plus attachée aux personnages. Enfin bref, 3 étoiles parce que j'ai vraiment aimé la partie sur Nikodime et qu'elle occupe presque la moitié du livre.

Κι όμως, φαινόταν τόσο ενδιαφέρον και τόσο πολλά υποσχόμενο... Ίσως και να ήταν αλλά να μην μπόρεσα να το αισθανθώ εγώ...
Το πρώτο μέρος αισθητά καλύτερο. Θα του έβαζα με ευχαρίστηση 4. Στο δεύτερο όμως χάνει πολύ από το έδαφος που έστρωσε και κατέληξε με επιείκεια σε ένα συμβιβαστικό 3.

J'ai trouvé que la première partie était un peu lente et que la deuxième était un peu plus intéressante. Il m'a manqué quelque chose pour que cette histoire me marque et pour que je m'attache aux personnages.

En 1937 une confrérie se forme pour sauver les trésors des églises russe du pillage exercée par les bolcheviques. Elle est constitué de fou de Dieu qui pillent à leur tour les églises mais pour la bonne cause

Livre intéressant et l'histoire m'a passionné. Le changement entre les 2 parties est saisissant. En fait j'aimerai savoir ce qui est authentique ou pas. Il semblerait que c'est un pur roman.

Je suis contente d'avoir lu ce roman, que j'ai bien aimé. Je m'en souviendrai sans doute longtemps grâce à l'originalité de l'histoire, du découpage en deux parties et en petits chapitres d'un ou deux pages, et des informations sur le passé récent de la Russie. Russie dans l'atmosphère de laquelle l'auteur arrive bien à nous plonger que ce soit celle de 1937 ou celle de 2000.
Et pourtant je n'ai pas véritablement été touchée par le sujet, ni par les personnages, surtout ceux de la deuxième partie....

Il faut connaître l’historique de la période communiste de la Russie sinon c’est un peu compliqué.
