OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
I did not know that the Lonely Planet series did things like this, but it is a good tour of significant wine growing regions around the world. Well, mostly Europe and America. The best part of that is that you can see if it is a region that holds interrest for you--we are going to northern Spain soon, and I have never been in that part of the country, so want to know what wines are grown there and where, but I also just got back from the Mosel region in Germany, which I unexpectedly loved, and wish I had thought more about where to go there. Recommended, especially if you like the style of this travel book series
Adequate for initial ideas and scoping out a wine holiday. But probably should be accompanied by Jancis Robinson Wine Atlas and one detailed book on your region of interest. Not enough details and information in this book and very selective choices.
Definitely more interesting than other books published by this publisher. While these clearly are global wineries they would not be "weekend" getaways for most. It would have been more interesting to see the book published by regions vs. this one big book.
Just excellent for armchair travel. Someday soon, I will head out to experience the joy of lovely scenery, great food and wonderful wine. The pictures are delightful, the recommendations are solid.
An informative, photographic tour of selected wineries all over the globe. Up-to-date and well-researched, Lonely Planet Wine Trails 1st Edition: 52 Perfect Weekends in Wine Country is full of information on wineries, travel suggestions, eateries, and celebrations in these locales. A fun read for a wine enthusiast. Especially love the section on Napa Valley.
This is a beautifully rendered guidebook that gives suggestions on wine touring in 20 countries. It lays out maps, winery tours and gives tips on where to stay and eat in these grape filled paradises. A must gift for the oenophile in your family!
Nice suggestions and tips for holidays in wine regions in 20 countries. An index is missing and I would have really liked a small introduction for each of the wine region. What wine is produced, What ist ist character etc.
