Now I do not see myself as someone who suffers from claustrophobia but I have to say reading the various articles that make up this book I can honestly say I may have to change that statement. I know that fear can be irrational and uncontrolled but I do believe there is an element of self preservation as well.

So for men and woman to voluntarily climb in to the unknown in the name exploration and discovery is something I struggled to understand - do not get me wrong I have the utmost admiration and respect for their craft and dedication but I also can honestly say you would not get me doing that.

That said the marvels that await their discovery are incredible and it is books like this that (and no pun intended) shed light on an otherwise impossible world. The book (in fact the whole series) is a mixture of scientific articles, real list stories and amazing photography.

I guess there are numerous places I hope never to have to find myself - that said I am fascinated by them and I guess can start to understand the thrill that these people experience. This is a beautiful book which I wont forget in a while

This is a gorgeous book, with some beautiful photography, and good basic information about cave exploration and formation. I particularly enjoyed the sections about the various types and classifications of creatures that inhabit caves. The tenacity and risk-taking of the explorers was fascinating reading as well.

I would've rated this a 5 had the caving technique and gear sections been updated. Other than that I found this to book to be very thorough in educating the reader on geology, speleobotany and other related cave sciences. Best of all were the beautiful pictures. They were amazing!!
