Honey Ridge #1

The Memory House

Rate this book
New York Times bestselling author Linda Goodnight welcomes you to Honey Ridge, Tennessee, and a house that's rich with secrets and brimming with sweet possibilities

Memories of motherhood and marriage are fresh for Julia Presley--though tragedy took away both years ago. Finding comfort in the routine of running the Peach Orchard Inn, she lets the historic, mysterious place fill the voids of love and family. No more pleasure of a man's gentle kiss. No more joy in hearing a child call her Mommy. Life is calm, unchanging...until a stranger with a young boy and soul-deep secrets shows up in her Tennessee town and disrupts the loneliness of her world.

Julia suspects there's more to Eli Donovan's past than his motherless son, Alex. There's a reason he's chasing redemption and bent on earning it with a new beginning in Honey Ridge. Offering the guarded man work renovating the inn, she glimpses someone who--like her--has a heart in need of restoration. But with the chance discovery of a dusty stack of love letters buried within the lining of an old trunk, the long-dead ghosts of a Civil War romance envelop Julia and Eli, connecting them to the inn's violent history and challenging them both to risk facing yesterday's darkness for a future bright with hope and healing.

Full of southern charm, heartaches, secrecy and all the themes that make southern novels so special. Atmospheric house and surroundings, romantic love interest and second chances. Quick light hearted story, mystery to solve and good manners to boot.

Two parallel stories set at Peach Orchard Inn. One is in the present day and concerns Julia Presley who is running a B and B from the property. Life has taken from Julia the person she loved most. She struggles to keep busy. But nothing can ease the despair she feels at the sudden disappearance of her young son years earlier. Will she ever see him again and can she make a go of the bed and breakfast? When Eli Donovan and his young son enter the scene it brings all sorts of complications to her life. The other story is from Civil war time when the stately Southern house was taken over by Yankee soldiers. Charlotte is married to Edgar. They have a young son Ben. The marriage is far from happy. What changes will the soldiers who have taken up residence at a Peach Orchard bring to Charlotte’s life? When found buried in an old trunk letters from that civil war time reveal secrets and violence.
This is an enjoyable read. The characters come across as real and believable. This is a story of resilience, of second chances and of staying true to one's core values, no matter what the circumstances. With a light paranormal aspect, a great deal of historical research and likeable characters plus a stunning setting, this makes for a gentle and uplifting read.
There are others in The Honey Ridge series. I might have to go and check them out as I really liked the author’s style of writing and the way she drew me into the story. A recommended read for those who like historical novels, duel time line stories, romance and books that draw the reader in emotionally.

The Memory House is a telling of two stories – one in the past and one in the present taking place in the same location – Peach Orchard Farm. The second I read this blurb for this book, I was intrigued. It had a ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’ feel that made me pick it up!

This was a story of second chances and of finding healing, in whatever capacity you’re able to accept it. The current story revolves around Eli, an ex-con learning to navigate the shaky grounds of society as well as being a single father, and Julia, a woman who lost her son in a way that could never allow her to find resolution. The past introduces Charlotte – a vicar’s daughter who traveled overseas in order to marry.

My favorite character in this story was Eli. He led a very privileged life right up until he went to prison, but he lost more than that; everyone he’d loved walked away from him. What made him so wonderful to read was that he came out of prison completely stripped of that sense of entitlement. He could have returned home and played on sympathy in an effort to get a hand out, but he didn’t. He was going to work hard to make a decent life for him and the son he’d just met. Despite his past and his lack of parental guidance, Eli was making every attempt to be a good father for his son. The evolution of their relationship was beautiful to read.

A pair of courting bluebirds caught Eli’s eye as they dipped and flirted. He smiled a little, though the action felt stiff and unfamiliar. Since his release, he’d been mesmerized by nature. The rising sun, a fluttering butterfly, a dog sniffing tires. Nature brought a peace, a rightness to his tumultuous soul. In his despair and self-pity, he’d forgotten those simple gifts he’d once taken for granted.

Julia was tough to read about. Losing a child is earth-shattering, and it’s something that can’t possibly be understood unless it’s something you’ve experienced. Even then, every situation is different. This is a woman who has worked hard to retain some semblance of life. She has to make the effort to get out of bed every day and trod on, but she does it. She does it with a smile, and she does it with kindness. She was an admirable character.

After leaving a family who’d shown her love and patience, Charlotte came to America to marry. Though her life wasn’t easy and her husband wasn’t affectionate (or particularly kind,) she was content with her life until her home was commandeered by Yankees during the Civil War. To her surprise, she found kindness from an unlikely source – Yankee Captain William Gadsden. It wasn’t until she met and spent time with him that she realized how different her life could be. What I liked about Charlotte was that she always stayed true to her morals, even when those around her didn’t deserve it. It tells you a lot about someone’s character when they don’t allow the events going on around them change who they are at their core.

The imagery this story inspires is stunning. The fact that it takes place on a Peach Orchard alone brings to mind lush, green landscape lined with trees and hints of orange and brown. This story had the elements of small town living: everyone knows (or at least knows of) everyone else, gossip abounds, and the town drunk likes to makes trouble. I really enjoyed the pacing. In both stories, things progressed slowly and deliberately. Every scene was created to give us more insight into our characters. The ending left me a bit unsatisfied for a few reasons. First, there was a paranormal component to the story that I wish had been explored more. The second reason includes a spoiler, so read at your own risk.

I thought The Memory House was a wonderful story of perseverance and love. There was a gentleness in the way it was told that made it feel fragile, as if it was important to get everything just right. If you’re a fan of stories where the characters have to rebuild their lives and establish new relationships, this one is right up your alley.

well written story of 2 different women in 2 different times (present day and during the Civil War) who have difficult lives but manage to overcome. There is a romance for each but the central theme is really overcoming tragedy. My favorite character was Eli who was the modern day hero. He had been an out of control rich kid who ended up in prison, totally disowned by his family. He is out now and totally down on his luck when he becomes the heroine's handy man in order to provide for the son he has only now found out he has a six year old son born while he was in prison. His character was really the most clearly defined of any in the book and I just loved how he accepted his situation was his own fault and how he'd changed and was determined to lead a better life and be a better man for his son.

I expected great things from this wonderful writer and was not disappointed. The Memory House is a beautiful tale of love, duty, honor, devotion and second-chances that seamlessly weaves together two remarkable love stories--one present day, one Civil-War era--in a lovely, lyrical tapestry. This emotion-packed book will tighten your throat, tug at your heartstrings and fill you with hope. Don't miss it.

A story of two strong women showing resilience in the face of great tragedy and adversity. Julia Presley found solace in restoring The Peach Tree Inn in Honey Ridge Tennesse to run as a Bed and Breakfast with her sister Valery. Her young son had been abducted six years earlier, and she still hopes and longs for his return. Julia's story is told alternately with Charlotte's story. Peach Orchard Farm had once belonged to Charlotte Portland's husband Edgar. The farm was taken over by a Union officer and used as a hospital for care of injured Union soldiers. Charlotte found herself drawn to Captain William Gadsen, who captured her heart. Yet, she tries to remain loyal to her husband. She will do anything to protect her son Ben. Ben cherishes the marbles given to him by Captain Will. In times of sorrow and heartache, Julia discovers an antique marble to sooth her. When Eli Donovan shows up at Julia's doorstep, she senses a man in great need, and gives him a chance to help her with some work around the Inn and it's orchards. He came to Honey Ridge to discover he had a young son, who's mother just recently passed away. Julia finds her heart softening towards Eli and his son. Each woman chooses each day to live with hope and cling to the love they have discovered in their life. A sweet story of forgiveness, redemption, perseverance and family.

3.5 Stars. A bit fluffier than I was expecting, a little heavy on tedious description, and the ending felt a little contrived, but overall a pleasant, compelling, and uplifting read. Perfect for whiling away a summer afternoon.

The audiobook for this was awesome. And I think I enjoyed the book more than I would have had I read it. I loved Eli and reading about his journey from felon to father. Normally, I don't connect as much with books about parents (as I have zero experience with parenting and kids really), but I felt for both Eli and Julia.

With dual time/story lines there is always one I connect with more than the other. In this case it was Charlotte and Will that I didn't connect to as much, but luckily the author kept those chapters short.

Everyone needs to read a good old fashioned story about redemption, hope, and second chances from time to time. With the world always focused on negativity it is refreshing to read a story that depicts normal people who made mistakes or suffered loss find a way to turn their lives around for the better with a little love, faith and trust. We all need second chances in life at times but sometimes that task requires a little more courage than at others. Julia's ability give Eli the benefit of the doubt made all the difference the world and helped him recapture his self-worth and boost his confidence, not only in regards to his relationship with Alex, but with Julia too.

Julia has a lot on her plate, but finds in Eli a quiet strength that convinces her he is a good man, and one she can lean on, who will listen patiently, is kind, and is falling hopelessly in love with her.

The old Civil War letters and Charlotte's story was very authentic and well written, but harsh and sad at times. But, you will love Charlotte's fortitude and her son Ben will capture your heart.

Title: The Memory House

This story has a little bit of mystery, a slight paranormal tint, a little bit of history, and a sweet contemporary romance. This story is a clean read and could be read by older teens and young adults as well.

Oh, how I LOVED this book! It had two romances/threads in it. And they were connected in the coolest ways! One took place during the civil war (and my favorite ) and the other present day. I really loved so much about this book. The characters, the writing, the pacing, the way the house itself was a character! Very much reminded me of Susan Meissner's books. I loved the theme. Grief, hope and love. This book had one curse word in it and only kisses so I was pleased also by how clean it was. I'm hoping this is the first in a trilogy or series!

Linda Goodnight has become one of my favorite Love Inspired authors. This book is not in that line of books, nor is it Christian. It is clean and other than one use of the "B" word, curse free. I enjoyed the book, but I did miss the Christian element that has been in her other books I have read. This is a book that goes back and forth between the present and past, and as I usually do, I tended to skip and skim over the past and focus on the present story. I did really like Eli as a character, and how he worked to overcome his past and be a father to a son suddenly dropped in his lap. Though I feel the book was missing what so many of her others have, it was still an enjoyable read

1st book in the series. Overall the book was great. It goes back & forth from present day to 1864-66. I'm hoping the next book gives me answers I didn't get in this book. Some things were unexpected & others predictable but worth the read.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher HQN Books via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. The expected publication date is March 31st 2015.

This story was a little bit of a surprise for me. While I was expecting a story of redemption and starting over I was not expecting to read the story of Charlotte during the civil war in parallel with Julia and Eli's story. I was very pleased with this as it is the type of story that I tend to gravitate towards and enjoy.

There are many themes explored throughout this book. Grief, forgiveness, love and responsibility to name just a few. They were woven together so seamlessly that I was actually surprised when I came to the end of the story. It simply did not feel like I had been reading it long enough to complete it.

I will refrain from discussing the plot as I think the synopsis does a good job at capturing what the story is about. All I will say is that I was along for the journey and felt the emotions of the characters as they forged forward in their lives. Eli's son Alex adds a dimension to the story that is at times heartbreaking and other times a complete joy.

This is the first time I have read one of Linda Goodnight's work and I think that after this I will seek out other novels she has written. I enjoyed this read.

This novel is an excellent story of heartache for the love of a kidnapped child and the mother left behind to wonder where he is and how he is doing. Trying to get on with life no matter how different it can be.
Julia Presley is the owner and operator of Peach Tree Orchard Inn. Keeping busy is the only thing that helps her to not dwell in her depression.
Eli Donovan is an ex-con who is trying to get his life back when he finds out he has a son. He travels to Honey Ridge, Tennessee, to meet his and decides to stay. He gets a job at the Inn and tries to keep a low profile,
This story goes back to the Civil War era telling about the Prescott house of old and the brave woman who lived there. Going back to the present and the discovery of letters she had written to a Union officer makes the story come to life. The comparisons between the women of the house frome decades apart adds to a lively tale of heartache ,perseverance and loves lost and found are enough to keep you turning the pages. Loved this book.

I picked up The Memory House to have something to read waiting while my husband had knee surgery. I couldn't put the book down.

The story switches between present day Peach Orchard Inn and Peach Orchard Farm during the Civil War. Sometimes when a book switches back and forth, it can be confusing. Not this book and the switches were smooth and well-written. I don't generally like books with a lot of introspection but this one grabbed me and wouldn't let me go until I read the whole book.

The four main characters -- Julia and Eli at the present day Peach Orchard Inn and Charlotte and Will at the Peach Orchard Farm during the Civil War are well-written and well-rounded characters. The secondary characters -- Valery and Connie; Julia's sister and mother and Alex, Eli's motherless son brought a lot to the present day story. As did Benjamin, Lizzie and Tandy; Charlotte's son and her maid and her son added to the Civil War era story.

Linda Goodnight is a new author for me. I will be looking for her books to read more by her.

I wanted an easy summer read and this book fit the bill. The author goes back and forth between current times and the Civil War, and she does a good job of it. The male character sometimes comes off as too needy/whiny--which is a refreshing change from that characterization always being female--but after a few eye rolls from this reader, the story came together. The Civil War parts were well done especially.

The present day story line is really good: Ex-con hero with estranged family and mountain of regrets becomes instant father to a son he's never met. He lands a job at the heroine's B&B remodeling an old carriage house and cleaning up her peach orchard. The heroine is divorced and haunted by the abduction of her young son - his whereabouts (dead or alive) unknown.

The Civil War storyline, while there being parallels to the present day one, is problematic - especially in regards to how slavery is handled. To give an example: the heroine tells the occupying Union officer that she does not own slaves - her husband does. Ummmmm....really?!?!? She calls them "servants" and treats her "servant" (a wedding gift from her husband!!!!!) "like a friend" - but then is so obtuse as to wonder who the father of the woman's son is. REALLY?!?!?!??! And her actions later in the book have MAJOR, SERIOUS, EPIC repercussions for this woman and her son and REALLY?!?!?!?!

But I kept listening because the present day storyline really is very good. But ugh. The Civil War stuff...really not.

Suatu hari, Eli Donovan (namanya sangat manis sebenarnya, khas sekali nama orang Amerika Serikat bagian Selatan) tanpa sengaja terdampar di depan pintu penginapannya.

RELEASE DATE: March 31, 2015

RATING: 3 Stars Worth requesting at library or buying in paperback

GENRE: Women’s Fiction / Contemporary Romance

AUDIENCE: Fans of Dorothea Benton Frank, Luanne Rice, and Anne Rivers Siddons will enjoy “The Memory House”.

SERIES: Standalone

SUMMARY: Blurb from Netgalley:

New York Times bestselling author Linda Goodnight welcomes you to Honey Ridge, Tennessee, and a house that's rich with secrets and brimming with sweet possibilities

Memories of motherhood and marriage are fresh for Julia Presley—though tragedy took away both years ago. Finding comfort in the routine of running the Peach Orchard Inn, she lets the historic, mysterious place fill the voids of love and family. No more pleasure of a man's gentle kiss. No more joy in hearing a child call her Mommy. Life is calm, unchanging…until a stranger with a young boy and soul-deep secrets shows up in her Tennessee town and disrupts the loneliness of her world.

Julia suspects there's more to Eli Donovan's past than his motherless son, Alex. There's a reason he's chasing redemption and bent on earning it with a new beginning in Honey Ridge. Offering the guarded man work renovating the inn, she glimpses someone who—like her—has a heart in need of restoration.

REVIEW: Goodnight’s story weaves two romances, happening a century apart, into her book. Julia’s heart is still broken over the disappearance of her young son which happened years earlier. Eli has just gotten “out of the big house” and is trying to live according to probationary rules when he learns that he is the father to a young boy. As Julia and Eli both struggle to put their lives together, they discover the love story between a Civil War era couple through old letters found in Julia’s inn during renovation. The love letters weave a story of hope, loss, and redemption that helps Julia and Eli discover how to move forward together.

This was a very simple story to read, extremely enjoyable and heart-wrenching in some chapters. As the story unfolded, readers are able to see how Julia and Eli grow emotionally and soon bind their hearts together.

*Tremendous thanks to Netgalley and Harlequin HQN Books for an ARC.

FYI: Linda Goodnight is quite a prolific author, so if you would like to check out her other books, why not mosey on over here…www.lindagoodnight.com

The Memory House
By
Linda Goodnight

The main and most important characters in this book...

Eli Donovan and his newly acquired son Alex and Julia and all of her family...her mom, her sister, her adulterous husband with his new family...and Mikey...the son that Julia misses every single day of her life. Plus...this book has the added bonus of chapters from the past...characters who formerly lived in Julia's Bed And Breakfast during the time of the Civil War. Oh...and if peaches could be a character they would be an integral part of this book...peaches are everywhere.

My very brief story summary that includes bits and bobs from the beginning, middle and end of this book...

This will be short and sweet...Eli is damaged, he is a former wealthy bad boy who is down on his luck...of course his car breaks down at Julia's and the healing begins! His son is near by...Julia needs cheap labor for her inn...and the relationships just grow. There is an undercurrent of heat between Julia and Eli...but...Eli has tons of relationship mending to do. Eli has to help his young son and try to gain back the trust of his parents. And...he has to find the strength to tell Julia about his sordid past.

My actual most favorite part of this book...

I just loved it all...the stories from the past as well as the stories in the present. There was angst and dysfunction and healing...it is my favorite kind of summer book!

My actual true feelings about this book and whether or not other potential readers will enjoy it...

This is the perfect beach book...once I started it I did not want to put it down. I also seriously craved Julia's strong coffee and her peach tea! The next time I make iced tea...slices of summer peaches are going to float in them!

Linda Goodnight is a master story teller! I love all of Ms Goodnight's book, but The Memory House is phenomenal. The characters are sympathetic and real. They face issues that are, sadly, all too prevalent in today's society. The author's writing is poignant and will bring tears to your eyes. She doesn't gloss over the issues and difficulties they'd face. I'll omit details to keep from spoiling the book for everyone.

In addition to the present day story she gives us the added bonus of a historical story set in the same home. Once again the story is breathtaking and you'll fall in love with the characters.

I'm already looking forward to book two in this series!

A contemporary romantic fiction intertwined with a civil war romance. An unusual choice for me, as I generally avoid civil war stories, they are too depressing, but this was enjoyable. The civil war romance had a bit of a happy ending. The main story centers around second chances and learning to live with tragedies in life.
