All-around average teenager Tsukune can't get accepted to any high school save one...but on his first day, he finds the rest of the student body doesn't appear average in the least. Best of all, the cutest girl on campus can't wait to fling her arms around his neck! Wait a sec'--are those her teeth around his neck too...? Tsukune's going to have one heck of a hickey when he gets home from Monster High! But does he have a chance in H-E-double-hockey-sticks of raising his grades at a school where the turf war isn't between the jocks and the nerds but the vampires and the werewolves?
Akihisa Ikeda (池田晃久) is a manga artist/manga-ka best known for the manga series Rosario + Vampire (ロザリオとバンパイア Rosario to Vampire). He's been a huge fan of vampires and monsters since he was a little kid. He says one of the perks of being a manga artist is being able to go for walks during the day when everybody else is stuck in the office.
This manga is not terrible, let’s just say that. But it has a lot of problems.
The art is beautiful and I think the art itself is where the author’s talent lies most heavily, not plotting. The plots of each volume…pretty laughable to even try to identify them with the idea of ‘plot.’ The situations are so see through you know well before anything goes down just how it all will end.
Fan service is always appalling when it happens upon a page, though expected, but some of the scenes are too ridiculous and insulting to bear.
One of the biggest things that turns me off when reading is how unfoundedly every female creature flocks at the main character. It’s stupid, unrealistic and makes the volumes hard to get through. Tsukune has his modesty, his kindness and his loyalty going for him, but the ladies don’t recognize those attributes and use them as a basis for their undying love for him. The love is just thrown in there to make him look like a big shot, a young boy acting as a damsel in distress, needing savior from the girls around him.
I think what keeps me reading these books (despite having bought them all for really cheap and used) is the incorporation of different monsters and what possible ridiculous motives they might have. That, along with the arc of the Rosario and the tensions and connections it creates between Moka and Tsukune. In the end, I’m still going to read into the “second season” to see if it will get any better. First series : 2/5 stars
Okay so technically I finished this a while ago but I kept forgetting to mark it as read. I enjoyed it! I thought that some of that chapters were repetitive and kept going with the same theme but I can see that the story is going to get good plus I’ve already watched part of the anime.
I just bought the box set of this series! I remember watching the anime years ago and wanting to read it so here we are!
I actually really enjoyed this first volume! The story set up was good and the characters we were introduced to were interesting, I'm excited to read the rest of the series.
La diversità non impedisce l' amore e l' amicizia.Come primo volume della serie, anche se il target è giovanile, promette molto bene a livello di tematiche.
Rosario+Vampire Volume 1 is an absolute delight and I am so pumped to work my way through this series!
This VIZ manga follows human Tsunami as he gets sent to a school full of monsters. He didn't realize this, especially since he wasn't the best student and this was the only school that accepted him. Moka, a pretty vampire girl, takes a liking to him instantly and sucks his blood. Suddenly, the two are the best of friends (or more?). Along the way they meet a succubus who also has eyes for Tsunami, some crafty mermaids and a riveting werewolf. Nothing's easy at this academy, let me tell ya!
This manga has spunky personality and it's wild fun! I really enjoyed this book and I was hooked and addicted almost instantly. The illustrations are fun and flirty, the story is PG-13 and had me snickering. It's like a YA or New Adult manga that flirts with action, thrills, romance and school life. Add in the wickedly funny writing talent Akihisa Ikeda has and you've got yourself a winner.
I highly recommend this book! It's definitely one of my favourite manga I've ever read and I'm going to be working my way through this entire series very soon.
Haha, okay. Well. My husband warned me I would hate this. I forgot, though, and I was too tempted by seeing a volume one sitting on my library's shelves all lonely and calling to me, "Emma, Emma, read me."
At first I was appalled at the fan service. I thought no way am I making it through this whole volume. However! My smut-reading side said to me, Emma, you read smut, how different is this really? So I trudged through.
This series makes me a little sad because the art is beautiful, really, absolutely gorgeous. The story has potential, it's an interesting concept. What the author does with it is not so great though. Most of the first chapters are every female monster in the school falling for the main character for no apparent reason whatsoever. Vaguely, it may be because he "smells good" because he's actually a human, yet none of them seem to realize that he is, in fact, a human? I don't know. Weirdness. Anyway, so the actual "plots" (if you can call them that) are extremely shallow and there is a lot of goofiness that goes on.
All that said, though, I did order the next two volumes because I have some minuscule hope that this could turn out better in future volumes. Plus, I mean really, I read smut, who am I to judge?
A friend of mine on Twitter is reading the second season, and had to re-read some of the books so she could read the new volumes she bought. That brought the idea in my head to also re-read this series. I will just be re-reading the first season though, the second one is still a bit too fresh on my mind.
It was definitely fun to go back to the world of Rosario + Vampire! I missed the characters, the humour, the silliness. Though I definitely miss the art from the later volumes. I am still amazed at how much the art changed. From a bit more cartoony to gorgeous details.
In this volume we are introduced to our MC, Tsukune. We also meet Moka, and her alter ego hidden in her rosario. Then there is our succubus Kurumu. Later we meet Gin who I know will grow out to be a great character but in this one was still a perverted *insert some bad words*.
Tsukune is, sorry to say, a wuss. Then again, I can imagine why. He is now stuck in a world with monsters. Monsters everywhere. It is only thanks to the teachers wanting their students to practice their human form that he isn't found out. Though of course some monsters may have an idea what he is, since he still smells like a human. He becomes a bit braver by the end, though that is mostly thanks to Moka. He really likes her a lot, and wants to stay with her. Plus what life does he have in the human world? After all he failed all (how does one even do that) exams for other schools. I am still a bit amazed that he was allowed to enter, I believe we do find out some hints as to why later, but at the moment it is a bit confusing.
Moka is sweet, but I was a bit annoyed with how easily she just bit Tsukune, never asking if he really wanted this. I get that he tastes yummy girl, but really, that is not a valid reason to just bite him out of the blue. But she does get it later on in this volume, and I was definitely happy with it. I know she will get better as the story continues and I can't wait to see that happen. Her alter-ego, hidden in a rosario? Still loving her, and how kick-ass she is!
Kurumu was a bit annoying at the beginning, I wished she would get the hint, but in overall she is a sweet girl, plus I can kind of see why she was acting like this. I know she, like Moka, will get even better and that I will be rooting for her.
The idea of a monster school and a monster world is a fun one, and I can't wait to see that getting explored more. Plus I want to see more different monsters, we already got a whole batch of them in this one. From werewolves, mermaids to succubi to vampires, and more!
There is a lot of humour in this one, and I enjoy it a lot. It makes the book so much fun in between Tsukune trying to survive his day, and the battles that happen because he is with Moka.
There is also a bit of fanservice. Mostly it is underwear shots, and often during the battles that happen.
And I guess I am back to shipping Moka and Tsukune again. :P I know I did a lot of shipping when I first read the series (and also when I first watch the anime when it aired). These two are just perfect together!
The book also sets the stage for the whole monsters x humans debate. I know this is one of the biggest things in the manga, as it also expands to the next season. It is quite interesting that they added such a serious topic in the manga, and are able to weave it in the story so it matches. Also Tsukune will play a big role in this debate, he already shows his feelings on the topic a few times in this manga, and I know that later he becomes even more of an ambassador for the cause.
I am not sure if I am looking forward to the next volume, it brings one of the most annoying characters in the entire series. A girl who, even at the end of season 2, I can't like. But I will keep reading, as I know that some epic stuff is going to happen.
I honestly didn't think I'd like this manga very much, mostly due to its length. I normally have an issue with overly long mangas because they'll often start with a rather cliched start and then drag that out into infinity with multiple volumes. It looks like there's still a chance of this hitting Naruto-esque levels of overly drawn out plot, but this had a fairly strong start.
The artwork here is nice and is the type that lends itself well to serialized format. It's neither so overly detailed that it'll get sloppy later on, nor is it the type that makes you feel like the artist just phoned it in. The characters are fairly endearing and I like that we have our couple somewhat established from the start. They're not a couple yet, but they're a little more solidly joined than other pairings, which is nice. I like the will-they-or-won't-they stuff as much as the next person, but sometimes I can't help but get frustrated when everything is overly cliched.
You'll get a lot of the same-old-same-old here, but Ikeda has enough here that's fresh, new, and cute to where some of the more jaded fans of shounen manga (like me) will likely be predisposed to end up liking it once they give it a chance.
Tsukune somehow manages to get sent to a monster high school because he fails at getting into any other high school, period (despite being average as opposed to a loser.) He runs into a cute girl named Moka, literally, who then greets him and sucks his blood. The two become friends, and soon he's taking classes, hoping none of the other monsters find out he is human, or he's dead meat.
This is bad because every single story follows the same plot.
1. A new person appears. 2. New person is bad/evil and tries to hurt Moka, Tsukune, and friends. 3. Tsukune rips off the Rosario sealing Moka's powers. 4. Moka's true self curbstomps the other person.
Every single story in the volume.
What's worse is you could just rip the whole monster thing out, and nothing would be lost. Moka is a vampire but she doesn't sleep in a coffin, seems to be fine with the sun, and really only is vulnerable to water (which her powered up self ignores fine.) It's just a tired, cliche, magical high school harem story.
Cute story with nice illustrations and interesting characters. A human troubled boy is sent to a school for monsters, vampires, werewolves, mermaids... where he meets and is attracted to a vampire girl. This vampire girl is attracted to him too, well his blood for sure. There is a bit of boy/girl trying to snatch them action that is humorous. It seems everyone wants him or they want her and they really only want each other. This first book wasn't great but it has a lot of promise. I think the characters slowly building up will to a fun crazy high school story.
While a part of me would like to say the only reason I read this manga is for the awesome artwork and cute fanservice girls, I must confess to having actually enjoyed the story a lot.
Being one of those hopeless romantic types who enjoys reading a good romance so long as it's been properly mixed with a healthy dose of action, comedy and, well, fanservice, I enjoyed reading Rosario+Vampire a lot more than I probably should have. I'll admit, it's one of my favorite Guilty Pleasure reads.
I thought the story was cute. It didn't really get all that deep until later volumes, but even the beginning had its own kind of charm that drew me in. I think the only thing about this that I really didn't like was Tsukune Aono, mainly because he falls into the cliche'd archetype of the hapless hero. He's that guy who, despite being a complete loser that no girl would ever want to date and doesn't have a single good quality aside from his ability to accept others, somehow manages to get every, single, female in the anime to fall in love with him. It's so atypical of the harem genre that it made it more difficult to get through the first half of the story then it should have.
Other than that, I really did enjoy the series, and have since managed to get my hands on all the volumes of Rosario+Vampire.
Tsukune Aono is an average C-high school student who just enrolled in a far away school known as Yokai Academy where he’ll learn is in a fantasy world full of mythical monsters and he’s the only human student enrolled there. He first meets Moka, a hot pink longhaired vampire 🧛♀️ 👄 who immediately takes a friendly liking to him and his blood to suck on. His new school life continues to be a rough ride where he makes another friend in hot succubus Kurumu, gets in hot water with an evil mermaid 🧜♀️ and the school pervert/werewolf 🐺 Gin and how Moka’s rosario necklace amulet unleashes her full merciless vampire form when taken off.
It’s a funny fantasy manga that has plenty of action, romance and plenty of monsters to see with it main characters carrying it all well together. A great start at something very interesting and spellbinding. A- (91%/Excellent)
This was so cute! I feel it was a bit slow at the beginning, but it's likely because the anime episodes were fresh in my mind. #3 & #4 were less sharp, so it was more like a new to me story. Such a cute manga!
4/5 This was a cute and fun harem. A good dose of comedy and some sexy ladies and I'm sold. Tsukune accidently gets shipped off to a high school for monsters. He is promptly introduced to the heroine Moka an adorable vampire with latent powers. We get four chapters total in volume one introducing some of the cast and showing off their abilities. After Moka we meet Kurumu a succubus and another member of the harem. Then we are introduced to some mermaids but I'm going to assume they don't hold a main roll. Lastly we are introduced to Gin the lecherous werewolf.
Volume 1 was a fun breezy read and I can see it's appeal.
Moka on the cover of volume 1.

Rosario+Vampire is a cute manga about a pretty bellow average, human boy named Tskune, who somehow manages to get into a high school for monsters unknowingly. He meets Moka and they become fast friends, so Tskune stays. In order to stay and get to know Moka better, Tskune must keep his human identity a secret. He get's into major battles and finds more, rather strange friendships along the way. I can't tell you how many times I've stopped and started reading this series, as well as watching the anime, but I love it and I always come back to start again. When I started reading this again I began to remember just how cute Moka and Tskune are in this story. Because this is the first time I'll be reviewing it I thought I'd analyze it critically a lot more. I first started this series way back when I was 14 or something, so it always has a special place in my heart, even though I can say now that the story line and characters aren't that amazing. I just think it has that nostalgic quirk to it for me that makes me really enjoy it. The character's dialogue isn't very natural or realistic and the story follows a very basic routine: Someone likes either Moka or Tskune, a battle happens, Tskune against all odds pulls Moka's rosary off releasing her true power and she wins, either 'befriending' the former enemy or they're never mentioned again (I wonder what happens to them??). But it's a formula that works for this kind of manga, it's cute, it's fun and it's down right addictive. I kept forgetting Tskune is narrating, as it's not that consistent and I find the beginning to the chapters to be repetitive... One random point... I STILL DON'T KNOW HOW TO PRONOUNCE THIS!! ....Is is ''Rosario Vampire'', ''Rosario to Vampire'', ''Rosario plus Vampire'', ''Rosario and Vampire'', or something entirely different? Maybe I'll never know. xD Just so you know, there are a lot of panty flashing, and sexual referencing, so it is for a slightly more mature audience, appealing to all for some fan service. ;D So if you haven't read much manga and you need a nudge in the right direction, I'd suggest to try this series. I do believe it's complete now, so is not ongoing.
A few years back, I had a friend who raved about this series. She absolutely loved it. Kept saying how wonderful it was. Since I spotted it at the library, I figured I'd give it a shot.
I think I got oversold.
This is a fairly generic harem comedy. This time around, the theme is monster girls. You've got a baby-faced vampire girl and a baby-faced succubus, both going after a semi-bland human male. The one only seems into him because he's got tasty blood, and the other's after him because he's "a good guy." Truth be told, those are probably some of the better reasons to be going after Bland Protagonist I've heard.
Still, the plot is fairly repetitive. Each chapter is essentially "Tsukune gets into monster trouble for 15 pages or so, Moka turns into a bad ass and kicks monster butt, all is neatly resolved." The characters are all pretty generic cliches, with vampire Moka being a ditz, Tsukune being the "all around nice guy", and what's-her-name the succubus being your somewhat generic love-rival.
The fan service, while it exists, is fairly light and doesn't distract from what little plot there is. The artwork is about as bland as our protagonist, though where it really shines is in the monster designs. But for the two main girl monster designs (which aren't all that exciting), I really liked the monsters, especially when the mermaids got scary.
All in all, I'd say it feels like every other harem manga out there without much to make it stand out. I guess if you're into that kind of manga, you might like this, though again, you've probably read one just like it before. There really isn't anything special here.
Saya iri. Ah, maksudnya bener-bener komik shonen...
Satu-satunya hal yang bikin saya penasaran sama seri ini... kepribadian Moka yang bisa berganti kalo kalungnya dicabut. Sampai akhir komik ini ga dibahas.
Rosario Vampire is kind of hard to talk about, at least for me. Not because it's BAD, but because I have... mixed feelings about its potrayal of women and men and their relationship with each other. The positive side to this argument is that, in this manga, the women are very empowered. They're not weak, and they can protect themselves. Tskune clings to them, not the other way around. Tskune also kind of breaks through the gender barrier here, as his skill lies not in fighting, but in reaching out to people when they need a friend (he also didn't have a major perverted streak like most other harem mains). On the more negative side of things, this kind of qualifies as a "magical girlfriend" type series (see Ah My Goddess). The magical girlfriends in this series are also objectified to a point, and while I don't disapprove of boob jokes (it IS a harem series after all. What did you expect?), I still find them somewhat disorenting. But, once you get down to it, this series is just pure, mindless fun. It's good to read when you're trying to get your mind off of all the dark, serious manga that seem to be everywhere now. So, read it! That's all.
Tsukune Aono is an all-around average guy, which is a nice way of saying that there was absolutely nothing special about him in any way. Because of this he is unable to get into any high school. That is until he is mistakenly accepted to Yokai Academy a strange and mysterious private school. That school looks weird and is sort of creepy but that’s ok because Tsukune has just befriended Moka Akashiya, the most beautiful girl he has ever seen. And then the other shoe drops when he learns that Yokai Academy is a school for monsters that humans are forbidden to even know about let alone attend. Any human who happens to stumble upon the school is killed on site oh and he learns that Moka is really a vampire who is becoming addicted to his blood. Despite all this Tsukune has chosen to stay at Yokai with Moka hiding his humanity from the students and the teachers. This manga is a classic romantic comedy with a supernatural twist. You will fall in love with this average hero who gets into extraordinary situations.
Tsukune is a young juvenile delinquent who can't get into any high school because of horrible grades and bad behavior. One day, his parents find a flier for a high school called "Monster High", a private school. When Tsukune goes to school, he finds out it's full of monsters! Vampires, werewolves, mythical creatures, etc. Being the only human in the school, he must hide his identity until he is finished with all 4 years of schooling. He can't leave or tell anybody he is secretly a human or he will die. He can't tell his parents either, because the school is supposed to be secret, and nobody is supposed to know monsters actually exist!
I recommend this book to any young male adults who enjoy manga and fantasy.
I enjoyed this book because it has a very unique theme and plot. It has some perverted events but it is mixed well into the story plot. This book has smaller plot points instead of one big plot, and I find that fascinating because most books don't have that.
What isn't to like about this book: Monster School Vampires Mermaids Werewolves Succubus
Really good read and very easy to follow. Looking forward to reading the next one as this just introduced the characters but hopefully over the next few books there will be more backstory from each character to come through. Definitely a manga to recommend if you like all the things above, reminded me of the Monster High characters but a version that is recommended for older people
Your average manga with a twist of your most common supernatural creatures all in one school, a quick read it you fancy something light, it's easy to digest but it's honestly nothing special.
Rosario+vampire is a good akuma based manga. It has a good art style and a good plot line. The akuma concept is good and very entertaining. Characters are good and interesting.
