A scoundrel named Torres offers Joam absolute proof of Joam's innocence but the price that Torres wants for this information is to marry Joam's daughter, which is inconceivable to Joam. The proof lies in an encrypted letter that will exonerate Garral. When Torres is killed, the Garral family must race to decode the letter before Joam is executed.

'800 Leagues on the Amazon' is an amazing story of adventure, honor, loyalty and exotic travel shrouded in great mystery. This is not the typical Jules Verne science fiction but it is a rollicking ride full of suspense and thrill on a log raft down almost the full length of the mighty Amazon River.

The book starts slowly and Verne narrates the surroundings and the flora and fauna of the Amazon in great detail. In the backdrop of one of the most exotic locations on the planet Verne narrates the story of the clash between an honorable man who is haunted by a death sentence for a crime which he didn't commit and an evil villain who want to destroy him. As is the case with his other books Verne places much importance on the honor of life and this can be found in the personalities of the characters in the story. On a journey from Peru to the Atlantic coast in Brazil the reader travels along with the central characters of the story experiencing the animal life, plants and vibrant surroundings of the Amazon river and its rainforest towards a fast paced climax.

This is a must read book for those who love a great tale of adventure with enough plot twists and suspense.

Jule Verne und ich das ist eine Liebe die nicht erlischt. Dieser Mann hat ScFi begründet und hat in meinen Augen kaum ein schlechtes Buch geschrieben.

Ich habe 'Die Jangada' sehr genossen zum lesen, ist es mein liebstes Buch von Jules Verne? Nein. Es ist aber trotzdem gut.

Ich komme mit der Art und Weise wie Verne schreibt sehr gut zurecht und liebe die Antropologischen, Zoologischen, Geografischen, Botanischen Details die er in seine Werke einbaut. Auch wenn viele Daten veraltet sind, lernt man trotzdem immer etwas dazu.

Die Jangada hat durchaus ihre Längen, ich finde aber dadurch wirken die actionreichen und spannenden Szenen deutlich nachhaltiger. Ich liebe auch wie heldenhaft, loyal und prinzipientreu Vernes Protagonisten immer sind, aber auch die Gegner werden mit (mal mehr/mal weniger) nachvollziehbaren Motiven charakterisiert. Naja für ihre Figur nachvollzoehbar würde ich sagen.

Ich kann kaum etwas negatives zu dem Buch sagen, es hat mir einfach spaß gemacht und ich genieße es immer einen Jules Verne zu lesen.

Romanian review: Cărțile lui Jules Verne au ceva aparte, deși atât personajele sale pozitive, cât și cele negative sunt adesea atât de asemănătoare, încât par copiate după un șablon, iar finalul este întotdeauna previzibil și convenabil. Pur și simplu, nu pot să mă satur de ele. Acest sentiment de aventură, de explorare, este greu de descris în cuvinte, dar face ca lectura romanelor lui Jules Verne să fie extrem de plăcută. Faptul că am crescut cu Jules Verne face ca această similaritate între cărțile sale să îmi dea un sentiment de nostalgie.
Totuși, ,,800 de leghe pe Amazon" are un element relativ nou față de celelalte romane ale scriitorului francez: misterul. Acesta este amplificat de o criptogramă pe care personajele încearcă să o descifreze și de care depinde viața unui om nevinovat, care a fost condamnat la moarte.
Jules Verne nu ratează ocazia să prezinte în detaliu cursul Amazonului, cu fauna și vegetația specifice și comunitățile existente în această regiune a Americii de Sud, dar și felul în care funcționează criptografia. Aceste informații științifice, care încarcă cartea, îi pot deranja și plictisi pe unii cititori, dar, pentru mine, au un rol în farmecul aparte al romanelor lui Verne despre care am scris mai sus.
Deși am renunțat la ideea de a citi întreaga colecție a autorului— deoarece sunt prea multe cărți bune pe lume, iar multe dintre cărțile lui Jules Verne sunt doar acceptabile— încă mai am câteva volume pe care sunt nerăbdător să le citesc.



English review: Jules Verne's books have a unique charm, even though both his positive and negative characters are often so similar they seem to follow a template, and the endings are always predictable and convenient. Yet, I simply can’t get enough of them. That sense of adventure and exploration is hard to put into words, but it makes reading Verne's novels incredibly enjoyable. Having grown up with his works, this similarity between his books gives me a comforting sense of nostalgia.
However, "Eight Hundred Leagues on the Amazon" introduces a relatively new element compared to the author’s other novels: mystery. This is heightened by a cryptogram that the characters attempt to decipher, upon which the life of an innocent man, sentenced to death, depends.
As usual, Verne takes the opportunity to provide detailed descriptions of the Amazon River, including its specific flora, fauna, and the communities in this part of South America. He also delves into how cryptography works. While these scientific details may bore or irritate some readers, for me, they add to the distinctive charm of Verne's novels that I mentioned earlier.
Although I’ve given up on the idea of reading his entire collection—there are simply too many great books in the world, and many of Verne’s works are just average—I still have a few volumes I’m eager to explore.

This is the first Jules Verne novel I’ve read that I really didn’t like. Both the plot and the characters take a back seat (way in the back) to the long list of flora and fauna descriptions. It felt more like an encyclopedia entry for an ecosystem than a novel.

This is the story of Joam Garral, who flees down the Amazon after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit. It is only through a chance encounter during this trip that he finds the proof of his innocence needed to save himself from hanging.

There is language used in the book that made me uncomfortable. The story itself was not the adventure that I’ve found in other books by this author, and the characters were neither likable or interesting. If you are interested in reading some of Jules Verne’s adventure books, I wouldn’t put this one at the top of your list. I think there are 54 in total to choose from, so unless you intend to complete the whole series, I’d skip this one.

More of a travelogue than a story, although it does have an engaging plot, Verne's 800 Leagues on the Amazon follows a family's descent by enormous log raft down almost the full length of the mighty Amazon River, from Peru to the Atlantic coast in Brazil, as they make their way to the last town on the river where a double wedding will take place. The major complication is that a villain is intent on blackmailing the father of the family for events that happened 23 years previously. Like many of Verne's adventure novels, we are treated to reams of encyclopedic information about the Amazon: the history of its exploration, its geography, the various native tribes that live along it, flora and fauna, meteorology, etc. The information is fascinating, and makes up a majority of the book, but the author feels that these presentations make understanding the story so much easier. It's actually hard to decide which of the two--the novel's plot or the gratuitous information--is the bigger attraction in Jules Verne's writing.

Tada, kai šią knygą išleido, ji tikrai turėjo būti vienas įspūdingiausių nuotykių literatūros kūrinių. Nematyti gyvūnai, tolimi kraštai, nuostabūs augalai, pavojus, apgavystė. Viskas ko reikia.
Dabar, literatūra pasikeitusi ir kūriniuose gvildenamos kitos temos. Čia aprašyti kultūros bruožai dabar susilauktų griežtos kritikos, net jei tuo metu buvo pakankamai modernus požiūris, ypač kalbant apie vergus ir skirtingas žmonių rases.

What a pleasant surprise. I found myself getting through the second part of the book in one evening.

At first, I was quite skeptical because of the slow pace of the story, but once it got to the point of the book which was the wrong accusation that happened twenty-three years ago, the whole atmosphere of the story changed for me. I'm happy that I'm not spoiling anything because it says on the back of the book, which is kind of sad, like I would be more eager to find out the plot of the story by myself, so thank you to whoever wrote it.

You know why the main character doesn't want to leave his own home that has been his home for the past 20 years before you even start to read.

Other than that I will give it a solid 4-star rating just because of the first part of the book. I´m sorry Jules but I´m gonna forget all of the names of different ships, flowers, animals, and different equivalents of names of things in Spanish... actually, I already did.

The first half was an endless catalogue of natural history, including but not limited to:
- The Tupi names for islands
- The numerous types of watercraft used by Amazonian indigenous peoples
- The tributaries of the Amazon
- The types of wood used in commercial distribution in the Amazon
- Unnecessary and antequated indigenous and Portuguese vocabulary words
- The local names and Latin (Linnea) names for the birds that they see
So much for the “adventure novel.” Nothing intriguing happens until around the 17th or 18th chapter.

Žiulis Vernas turėjo sugebėjimą į vieną istoriją sudėti mini detektyvą, fantastikos žanrą (nors kartais viskas buvo aprašoma taip tikroviškai, kad net galėjai save apgauti, jog viskas, kas vyksta knygoje, galėtų vykti ir realiame gyvenime), ir visai neblogą meilės romaną. Kas gražiausia, kad jo knygose niekada nieko netrūksta ir niekada nieko nebūna per daug. "Žangada" lygiai taip pat pasižymi viskuo, kas būdinga šio autoriaus kūrybai. Veikėjai skrupulingai atskleisti, jauti, ką mylėti, o ant ko pykti, dar gražiau, jog nors istorija neatrodo sudėtinga, tačiau perteikia daug žinių apie kitas kultūras. Kelionės ir nuotykiai yra tik viena šios istorijos pusė, lygiai taip pat čia nėra pamirštami ir žmonių tarpusavio santykiai, gal nerasime labai įtaikingų minčių, tačiau tarp eilučių šis kūrinys pulsuoja šiluma ir nepamiršta atskleisti visiems svarbių vertybių - pasitikėjimo ir tiesos.

La première partie took me a couple of weeks to get through, but the deuxième I finished in a day. Jules Vernes' extremely detailed descriptions vary between giving useful information, context and atmosphere, and just being overdone and tedious. Knowing the latitude and longitude of Manao doesn't add much to the story. But when the plot thickens and time starts running out, things get good!

Nav ko slēpt, bet bērna gados šis autors man bija pats, pats labākais. Kā gan var nepatikt Žils Verns, ja visos garajos skolas brīvlaikos mēs ar TV starpniecību tikām iepriecināti ar “Kapteiņa Granta bērniem”. Verna grāmatas bibliotēkās arī vienmēr bija paņemtas, un tieši tādēļ šo grāmatu man izdevās izlasīt tikai pēc pamatskolas beigšanas. Izlasīju un konstatēju, ka grāmata nav neko jēdzīga. Tagad nolēmu pārlasīt, lai noskaidrotu vai manas domas nav mainījušās.

Garralu ģimene mierīgi dzīvo Peru, un šķiet, ka viss ir kārtībā. ģimenes patriarhs Žoāms Garrala gan nāk no Brazīlijas, taču nekad nav izteicis vēlmi doties uz savu dzimteni. Autors kā īsts futūrists paredz Brazīlijas civilizēšanu, nekautrēdamies sadala sabiedrības šķirās un norāda katrai no tām īsto vietu. Laiku pa laikam nedaudz pagaužas par vergturību, bet labajam saimniekam jau ir arī tikai labi un uzticami vergi, lojāli kalpotāji un labi bērni.

Sižets ir lubenes cienīgs un pašvakam scenāristam ļautu no grāmateles izspiest vismaz divsimts sērijas. Ja paskatāmies autora daiļradi kopumā, tad viņam nekad nav izdevies izveidot normālus galvenos varoņus. Tie ir standarta tipāži, kur ir kāds enciklopēdists, kāds panaivs lauķis vai kalpotājs, bagāts džentlmenis, smuka meita, iemīlējušies jaunekļi. Darbība noris kā nepārtraukts piedzīvojums, lai lasītājs nepamanītu visa notiekošā seklumu un absurdumu. Tēli ir labie un ļaunie, principiālie un bezprincipa, pielīdēji un džentlmeņi, baltie un melnie. Savā starpā atšķiras tikai ar vārdiem un dzimumu. Par tēliem kā tādiem runāt ir veltīgi, jo ja jau pats autors raksta par viņiem primitīvi, tad kāda gan pieķeršanās viņiem un palikšana atmiņā. Šī grāmata diemžēl nav izņēmums, te autors ir atteicies pat no savas futūrista komponentes un no paša sižeta vispār.

Visa grāmata lasās, kā nepārtraukts stāstījums par Amazones upes faunu, floru un cilvēkiem. Laiku pa laikam vienmuļi iemidzinošais stāsta plūdums tiek pārtraukts ar kādu asāku sižeta pavērsienu, kādu pakampj kaimans, kāds nemāk normāli pakārties, kāds noslēpt savu patieso dabu. Autors dara visu, lai neatstātu lasītāju neziņā par katras amazones pietekas ūdens garšas īpatnībām. Viņš nekaunas pus lapaspusi pierakstīt ar koku nosaukumiem un to izmantojumu tautsaimniecībā. Svarīgākās lietas tiek atkārtotas pāris reizes, ja nu kādam nepielec. Nezinu, iespējams, ka deviņpadsmitajā gadsimtā šis stils bija pieņemams, bet mūsdienās, kad no daiļliteratūras netiek gaidīta enciklopēdijas šķirkļu atgremošana, grāmatai pietrūkst fokusa.

Vienīgais, kas grāmatā bija labs, bija ievads kriptoloģijas pamatos, kriptogrāfisko tekstu analīzē un atšifrēšanas metodēs. Tas varētu teikt izglāba visu pasākumu un tikai tādēļ grāmatu nenovērtēju kā nelasāmu. Kas to būtu domājis, ka Brazīlijas džungļos vergu ķērāju otrais hobijs ir tekstu šifrēšana un garu penteru rakstīšana šajā šifrā. Nemaz nerunāsim par galveno ļaundari - īstu brīnumbērnu, kas zinot atslēgu spēj lasīt tekstu pa tiešo bez zīmuļa un lapas.

Lieku 5 no 10 ballēm. Garlaicīgs plostošanas apraksts, kurā autors spiež uz dabu, kopējot izvilkumus no enciklopēdijām, saturam piemaucot klāt to kas notiks nākotnē - autora pagātnē. Grāmatas lielākais pluss ir tās īsums, lai gan reizēm gribas, lai viņi visi tur uz tā plosta atdotu galus un izbeigtu autora mocības.

The great Amazon River could not leave the author unmoved, so he made a literary journey to it. Our vehicle is an impressive vessel that offers our heroes all the comforts and above all an impressive view of this wonderful area. Of course, the trip is interesting and its description is very good, but I think the author insists a lot on civil details instead of describing the natural landscape and everything that unfolds in it. Equally civil is the ending of the story, with a mystery from a criminal act of the past where justice and the art of encryption are mixed. A book that could have been better and more exciting but certainly has some interest for the author's fanatics.

Ο μεγάλος ποταμός Αμαζόνιος δεν θα μπορούσε να αφήσει ασυγκίνητο τον συγγραφέα, για αυτό έφτιαξε ένα λογοτεχνικό ταξίδι σε αυτόν. Το όχημά μας είναι ένα εντυπωσιακό πλεούμενο που προσφέρει στους ήρωες μας όλες τις ανέσεις και πάνω από όλα εντυπωσιακή θεά σε αυτήν την θαυμάσια περιοχή. Έχει φυσικά ενδιαφέρον το ταξίδι και η περιγραφή του είναι πολύ καλή αλλά ο συγγραφέας νομίζω ότι επιμένει πολύ σε πολιτικές λεπτομέρειες αντί να μας περιγράψει το φυσικό τοπίο και οτιδήποτε εκτυλίσσεται σε αυτό. Εξίσου πολιτική είναι και η κατάληξη της ιστορίας, με ένα μυστήριο από μία εγκληματική ενέργεια του παρελθόντος όπου ανακατεύεται η δικαιοσύνη και η τέχνη της κρυπτογράφησης. Ένα βιβλίο που θα μπορούσε να ήταν καλύτερο και πιο συναρπαστικό αλλά σίγουρα έχει κάποιο ενδιαφέρον για τους φανατικούς του συγγραφέα.

بدهد.هرچند با عطف به ماسبق نویسننده کتاب میتوان همچنان تمی ماجراجویانه در کتاب اخیر جست 800 فرسنگ در طول آمازون نه کتابی علمی تخیلی نه چندان ماجراجویانه بلکه داستانیست
جنایی دادگاهی که که از قلم قدرمتند پدر سبک علمی تخیلی نوشته شده است
شاید آن درخششی را که د سایر کتاب های ژول ورن و سبک منحصر به خودش سراغ داریم نتوانیم در این کتاب پیدا کنیم، اما متن کتاب و قدرت داستان نویسی و البته موضوعی که ژول ورن به آن پرداخته احتمالا تنه به تنه موضوعات فیلم سازی که در یکی دو سال اخیر در سینمای ایران با فیلم هایی با موضوع تلاش برای نجات جان یک اعدامی ساخته شده است بزند.

هشتصد فرسنگ در طول امازون شاید در ابتدا یک کتاب با موضوعی تکراری به نظر برسد اما آنچه کتاب را در نوع خودش خواندنی میکند نه آن سرگرمی محضی که از خواندن آثار ورن انتظار داریم، بلکه محتوای اخلاقی کتاب است
جایی که جان داکوستا برای بار دوم و ذر حالی که منتظر اعدام است به خاطر ارزشی به نام شرافت می ایستد و تن به فرار نمی دهد و زمانی که فرزندش به او می گوید آنچه انتظارش را می کشد اعدام
است در پاسخ با ایمانی که به راستی و درستی خویش دارد می گوید پس بگذار اعدامم کنند
.با روبرو کردن جان داکوستا با فرزندش و البته مروری بر خاطره فرار گذشته

Bu kitap elimde aylarca süründü. Sebep biraz cep boy olmasından kaynaklanıyor. Cep boy olunca elde tutmak zor oluyor. Kitap güzel basılmış sayfalar kopmuyor ama kitabı okuyacağım derken ellerim ağrıdı resmen. E tabii okuma keyfim de sekteye uğradı dolayısıyla. Neyse... Kitap Jangada isimli geminin yolcusu olan ailenin macerasını anlatıyor. Uzuuun yıllar önce bu ailenin reisinin yaşadığı bir olay var ve sonuçları tüm aile bireylerini etkileyecek türden.
Kitabı bitirebilmek için en azından bir bölüm bir bölüm okumaya çalışayım demiştim. Ama yarıdan sonra öyle güzel bir hal aldı ki elimden bırakamaz oldum. Meraklandırdı, heyecanlandırdı ve sevdirdi kendini.
Bence okunacaklar listenizde yer edinmeli ama yarıya kadar durağan gidecek söylemedi demeyin.

بین سه ستاره و چهار ستاره مونده بودم. من آخرین کتابی که از ژول ورن خوندم شاید مال ۱۰ سال پیش باشه، که یه شب تا صب کتاب ۷۰۰ صفحه‌ای ازش خوندم. یادم نمیاد بقیه کتاباشم انقد توصیف داشت؟ نمیدونم این کتابش با بقیه فرق داشت یا من برا این همه توصیف پیر شدم. شایدم کانسپت محل ماجراجویی اندازه مرکز زمین و ماه و ته دریا جالب توجه نبود. تا صفحه‌ی ۱۹۰ اتفاق دندونگیری نیوفتاد و از اونجا تا حدود ۳۰۰ بود که خیلی هیجان پیدا کرد، که حالا به خاطر اون ۱۰۰ صفحه ۴ ستاره هم دادم.

Here is a most interesting Jules Verne tale. Unlike his usual science fiction novels, Eight hundred leagues actually tells the tale of an Amazon River trip, and most is quite descriptive as regards the surroundings, people, places, vegetation, wildlife, etc. It's quite a tale to follow, from the end of part one its got you at the edge of your seat!

This was a slog to get through. The usual tropes about Verne and how long he takes on mundane details apply. This one takes a very long time go get going and unfortunately doesn't really have the payoff for the reader who perseveres.

I barely finished this one. I love Jules Verne but this book is... not good. There wasn't too much that I hated, but that's because there wasn't much substance to have an opinion on. The plot is... wait... was there a plot? I must have missed that paragraph. The characters were indiscernible from each other. They were hard to tell apart even by name (because two had almost identical names). No one was unique or memorable. The listed curiosities along the Amazon could have been interesting, but they were always punctuated with the characters shooting or hunting the rare and disappearing animals. You tell us that giant manatees were rare and then you kill it? Are you trying to make me dislike the characters? Then you are doing a good job. The only interesting part was the body diving scene with a convenient canon shot and an inconvenient eel. Can not recommend this book.

I enjoyed this book more than I expected. It's not the best Jules Verne story, but is written in his classic scientific style. A fascinating journey about the Amazon and the Brazilian frontier in a fascinating time. The story is simple, but well-suited for the setting. If you like Verne, give this a read.

درست است که من چیزی از این کلمات نمی فهمم،اما شک ندارم در این سند مرموز گنجی بزرگ پنهان است.چون اگر جز این بود دلیلی نداشت که به زبان رمز نوشته شود.کسی که این عبارت عجیب و غریب را نوشته،حتما نظر خاصی داشته و کسی که صاحب سند بوده،حتما مردی بسیار ثروتمند است.

ژول ورن نویسنده فرانسوی و کسی که پدر داستان‌های علمی، تخیلی در جهان نام گرفته همیشه و هر وقت که با این اسم و عنوانین کتاب‌هاش برخورد می‌کردم، به این موضوع می‌اندیشیدم که چنین شخصی با اینکه جهانگرد نبود ولی چه اطلاعات وسیعی از دنیا و نقاط گوناگون کشورهای مختلف داشت بطوریکه در یک داستان از روسیه و مناطقی که مابین دو شهر قرار داشتند می‌نوشت در داستان «میشل استروگف»
و مشهورترین کتابش هشتاد روز دور دنیا که نوشتن چنین کتابی قطعا احتیاج به تحقیقات وسیعی داشت و همچنین داستان‌های مربوط به جنگل‌های آمازون و کوه آتشفشانی در ایسلند که لوکیشن کتاب سفر به مرکز زمین بود و نوشتن درباره اعماق اقیانوس‌ها و حتی تفکری خیالی درباره اولین موشکی که به ماه فرستاده می‌شد و درست همین موشک در همون نقطه‌ای که ژول‌ورن در کتابش نوشته بود در عالم واقع به فضا فرستاده شد با همون تعداد سه نفری که جزو شخصیت‌های داستان ژول‌ورن بودند و حتی محل افتادن موشک رو هم ژول ورن با کمی اختلاف پیش‌بینی کرده بود!

و اما این رمان هم مربوط به شخصی به اسم جانگاداست که به مدت ۲۵ سال با یک هویت جعلی زندگی رو می‌گذروند چرا که تهمت سرقت الماس‌ها رو به این شخص زده بودند و اگر گرفته می‌شد و مدرک موثق به دادگاه ارائه نمی‌کرد، حکم اعدام براش صادر می‌شد.

A história, ocorrida na década de 1850, particularmente interessante por se passar quase toda no Brasil, descreve a viagem de uma jangada gigantesca de Iquitos, no Peru, a Belém, no Pará.

O texto, com mistérios, voltas e reviravoltas, mostra um Verne deslumbrado com a riqueza da flora e da fauna da Amazônia. Um exemplo:
“Em primeiro lugar, havia um grande estoque de mandiocas, que são raízes de um arbusto que tem de seis a dez pés de altura, e que é o principal alimento dos habitantes das regiões intertropicais. Essa raiz, parecida com um grande rabanete escuro, dá em tufos, igual à batata. Nas regiões africanas ela não é tóxica, porém, na América do Sul, contém um suco dos mais venenosos, que se extrai antecipadamente por pressão. Depois disso, a raiz é transformada numa farinha, que se prepara de diversos modos, inclusive em forma de tapioca, de acordo com o gosto dos índios”.

A descrição da Manaus da época é tão curiosa que pesquisei para saber se era verdade ou parte da ficção.

A história tem um apelo especial para mim, pois naveguei por dois dias o trecho do Amazonas descrito no final do livro - Santarém a Belém - em um barco de transporte regional, convivendo com à população local

Uma curiosidade trazida pelo livro:
Quase todo brasileiro alfabetizado sabe que o nome de nosso país - Terra de Santa Cruz - foi mudado para Brasil por conta da grande quantidade de uma árvore com uma madeira que fornece uma tinta vermelha, agora quase em extinção, denominada Pau Brasil. Mas poucos sabem que o nome da árvore vem de braza, uma palavra que, na língua espanhola, está associada à cor vermelha da brasa.

A family travels on a giant raft along the Amazon river, from Iquitos to Belém. During the journey, they go through many dangers and adventures. What's more, the father is accused of a crime he never committed, and the only proof of his innocence is an encrypted document. His family and friends must race against time to decode it, before the man is executed.

I have to say that it was rather depressing to have all sorts of species that are now threatened/endangered paraded in front of me. I find myself wondering what effect the publication of this book had on history. I hope this book was instrumental in bringing people to a greater appreciation of what's in the Amazon rather than drawing still more people to exploit it.

2.5 stars. This book started out the way I thought it would, but the plot ended up chopping 3 different books in one. If it weren’t for a very good ending, the disjointedness would make no sense. The characters were underdeveloped. Parts of this were ok, but it was definitely missing some pieces. The narration/dialogue was a bit annoying at times.

This book is missing a plot entirely. The book is just descriptions upon descriptions of the landscape of Brazil. If I wanted a non-fiction book about Brazil I would read Alexander Humboldt. There are also several instances that just didn’t age well like multiple descriptions of killing animal for example baby turtles by the thousands while acknowledging that they’re already endangered.

A Jules Verne adventure and mystery traveling down the Amazon on a huge raft. Not as exciting or involved as "The Mysterious Island" butt involves the Amazon and takes place in the nineteenth century, thus it was of interest to me. Interesting natural history "facts".
