Operation Danny...

That's all bartender and recent college graduate, Julian Hallowell has had on his mind for the past year. Julian may have no idea what he wants to do with his life, but he definitely knows he's in love with the boy next door: the one in the next room to be exact, his roommate, Danny Wallace.

Danny owns a used textbook store just off campus, and while Julian has done his level best to make Danny fall for him, all his hard work appears to have been in vain. Danny doesn't seem to view Julian as anything other than that--a roommate and friend. So when new guy in town Andy Baker asks him out on a date, Julian can't think of a good reason to say no.

Julian has already instituted a Reverse Operation Danny plan, which he's positive will purge all thoughts of love and lust for his roomie out of his head. He's ready to move on and start looking for his next Mr. Right, and Andy just might fit the bill.

How to get over yourself and love a book to spite your own brain.

I should hate such a delusional, judgy, twinkzilla of an MC, yet do not.

I should detest another plot that could be neatly resolved with a five-minute conversation, yet do not.

I should revile the parade of cliche supporting characters, like the sassy mom, or the neurotic fag-hag, or any of them, really.

I should scorn them all, yet do not.

Because one chapter in, I'm charmed by the MC, careless of the standard plot, and infatuated with the rest.

And lemme tell you, Gabby's cordon-bleu contre-temps had me cackling for almost twenty minutes, and that was before they found the one on the fridge.

The story has some problems. But sometimes...

Sometimes, it's not the story—it's how you tell it.

I always dislike re-reading a book in audio format because if I loved a book the first time, a bad narration can kill the memory of a good story for me. However, with As You Are, I didn't adore the book the first time around (in 2014), and I've been waiting for a chance to try Jason Frazier's narrations, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

First of all, let me say that Jason Frazier did NOT let me down. He was seriously awesome as a narrator, doing a huge range of voices and really showing off his acting chops. He made the story bearable for me because I had a lot more issues with the actual story this time around. My favorite thing about Jason's voice was how SEXY it was! Seriously sexy. Audiobooks in general seem to lack voices that actually sound as hot as the plot, but Jason just saying "Julie" in that deep, sultry tone of his was divine. That man has some serious skills or maybe he was just blessed with that voice. Either way, I'll be listening to more from Jason Frazier in the future, guaranteed.

It is interesting, however, what you are drawn to when listening to a book versus reading it. I couldn't believe how often these characters smoked in this book. It was like every single scene! This is going to be a HIGHLY subjective statement, but I found all of those chain smoking scenes to be total turn-offs. I'm a dentist, and I have grown to really dislike smoking, so much so that I can barely hide it from my face when I'm around someone who smokes. The constant smoking from Julian was something that made my face cringe up every single time.

I also had a problem with how dated this book felt. Like very, very dated. I'm 31 years old, and a lot of of the references in this book went right over my head. The MC is supposed to be younger than me, but some of the stuff he mentions is just way too dated, even considering that this book was originally published 7 years ago. I'm talking pop culture references, not the love of old movies, which stands the test of time.

Aside from those issues and the fact that this book is ALL about miscommunications, I was also charmed by this story. I liked how Julian was a sort of judgemental, neurotic, self-centered bitch (in an adorable way), and both mentally slutty and hopelessly romantic. I also liked Danny, and I wondered why I was so hard on him the first time around. I got Danny more on re-read, that's for sure. I looooved Julian's mom and Gabby. Those two were some of the best female characters in M/M that I've read in some time.

I wish this book was more focused. I found myself wondering about the plot and where it was headed multiple times, and I'd read this book before! It veered off on a lot of tangents, and I think sometimes the romance got lost. I would have honestly rated this book 2.5-3 stars on re-read if it wasn't for Jason Frazier's narration, which bumped it up a full star+ to 3.5 stars.

If you are an Ethan Day fan, then I think you will enjoy this one. But I'd recommend getting it in audio format, just because I think it added a lot to the story.

Julian is a hopeless romantic... a picky, spoiled, outspoken romantic who is on the hunt for "Mr. Right". Now, I know I sound like I'm criticizing him but I'm not, I swear! I liked that Julian wasn't the typical "perfect" romantic hero. He was flawed and funny and I found him incredibly endearing.

This book felt like an Ethan Day book. All of the books that I've read from him have had this adorable, manic sense of humor. I loved some of the one-liners in this book so hard. Julian was funny, his mom was funny, and GOD was Gabby funny. Danny, not so funny but I'll get to him later.

I loved so many things about this book. What I didn't like as much were the flashbacks. I felt like they took me out of the story (like a commercial break during an important scene in a movie) and I had trouble getting back into the swing of things when the story resumed.

I also didn't really like Danny all that much. I don't think he grovelled or did nearly enough to win me over by the end of the story. I honestly feel a little mad at him still...

I think I wanted more buildup or something. I like my romances to be more slow-burn and this was more like crash and burn. The characters and the humor were lovely but I didn't feel as invested in their relationships. However, I read this whole story with a smile on my face and felt that zingy pick-me-up jolt that Ethan Day's books always give me.

Sweet, sexy, sassy, and just a touch of angst, damn I miss Ethan Day. Glad to revisit this lovely story beautifully narrated by Jason Frazier. (Truly, there's no one else I want performing Ethan Day's novels.)

A classic friends-to-lovers, As You Are is told from Julian's pov. Surrounded by a cast of characters that I count on in an Ethan Day novel: brash and confident bestie, quirky but loving mother, and super hot (slightly dense) slutty love interest... this one's a winner.

It's also incredibly fun to think about how much has changed in the years since ED wrote this one - smoking before the Clean Indoor Air Act, VCR's, and meeting your loved one at the gate in the airport - just to name a few.

Jason Frazier truly gets what Ethan Day was all about, and I love what he adds here. Julian's irreverence, humor, and heartbreak comes across so authentic in the audio version of As You Are. If you haven't had the opportunity to fall in love with this story, go with the audiobook, you'll be glad you did.

GOOFY GRIN…plastered on face. Me. Happy.

I can read the friends-to-soulmates storyline all day, every day. Especially if it’s written with charm and goofiness and hilarity and warmth…

This is my first Ethan Day book (HOW CAN THIS BE?!!!!) and his “voice” makes me laugh! I love the MC, Julian. He’s the kind of guy that I just want to hang out with, drink with, people-watch with, and laugh with. And the one-liners in this book are PRICELESS. Silly, but not cheesy. That takes talent. I was reading on an airplane and did the awkward laugh-outloud-until-I-realized-people-were-around-me thing on numerous occasions.

*note: if you’ve read the Kevin Connor series by Scott Sherman, Julian reminds me a bit of Kevin who reminds me a bit of Jory from Mary Calmes’ Matter of Time series who reminds me of…well, you know…the fun guy that everyone loves…but in Julian’s case, not as annoying.

Julian and Danny have such an easy friendship (roommates) and I ate-up those comfortable moments when I got to be a voyeur into a relationship between two people who just KNOW each other and COMPLETE each other and make each other BETTER.

Their road to “togetherness” was not without a few bumps and those bumps hurt my heart a bit. (…just enough angst, but not the type that will slay you, reducing you to a whimpering mess…but enough to be felt). But ultimately made the payoff worth it.

What Day also did really well in this book was have 2 strong and delightful female characters (Julian’s best friend Gabby and his mother Delilah were both fantastic).

I found some bits in the book borderline judgmental (but since it’s the voice of Julian, I can appreciate that it’s his opinions, not necessarily the book trying to preach a message to me). And I didn’t always love the jumping around in timeline…flashback’ish in nature. I was confused a couple times and wanted more of the present day action on other bits.

But, nothing says “Yay, I really, really liked this” more than a huge smile at the final period.

This was super cute!

Cute little friends to lovers. It had some laugh out loud moments. Low on the steam scale. A little too too much rambling but overall enjoyable. I'll definitely check out this author's other books. 3.5 Stars.

I really enjoyed this book. I was expecting it to be all laughs and humorous (especially after the opening football scene), but it was very different. It started off light and then turned into an emotional roller coaster! This book has it all. Danny was breaking my heart, but in the end I completely understood his reservations about pursuing a relationship with Julian. And the final scene was absolutely beautiful. Julian also had a lot growth throughout this book.

Ethan is amazing when it comes to the character development. I always find myself connecting with and caring about all the secondary characters along with the main characters.

This was a cute story from Ethan Day. But it was more than cute, it was romantic, and heartbreaking, and several rollercoasters worth of emotional ups and downs. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me consider if it was possible to throw a fictional character to the sharks–-’cause there is douchebaggery and then there is dickish douchebaggery of the most assholic kind, and I’m pretty sure I know which kind Danny threw himself into. I wasn’t expecting quite the journey I was taken on, and I enjoyed the surprise twists and turns.

I am in deep like with Julian. He may have some off-putting habits (dude, the pretty boys are not going to snog you if you start hacking up your lungs cause those cigs you are so fond of), but I love his attitude and his tenacity. And screw what other people say, I love romance and the idea that there is someone out there that one day you might be lucky enough to find and spend the rest of your lives together watching old movies and have wild monkey sex that makes the neighbors tut every time they see you. And I love that Julian believes in it too. Now it may not be practical-–but it is a nice aspiration.

After all, who hasn’t fallen madly in love with someone that is probably going to end up breaking their heart into bite-sizes pieces, even if they don’t mean to? And boy, does falling for Danny mean there is always the inherent risk that Julian is going to go nuts…or throw himself at the first Andy he sees in the hope that he can stave off crazy for a few more months. I liked that Julian tried to get over Danny. Not very successfully, but he did try. And that does deserve some points. Even if the whole Andy thing was just a mess from start to finish.

And there is where I start to run into problems. I just really dislike cheating. It drives me up one wall and down the other. And even though I am fully behind Danny and Julian having passionate sex on every stable, and few non-stable, objects in their home…Julian was in a something with Andy when it happened and that just bugs me. And then, to decide not to tell him…let just say I wanted to start slapping people. Though, and I say this with a heart that was really rooting for team Danny, Danny deserved a slap, a punch, and a hard knee to the groin for what he did to Julian. I am not normally a violent person (despite what that whole last sentence seems to have implied very heavily) but goddamn, that was a messed up thing to do. I get why he did it, why he freaked out and went with crazy-stupid-ass plan A for how to eject oneself from out of harm’s way, but still low blow dude, low blow.

I also had some problems with the timing of this story. Mostly, just that whole middle section with the flashbacks to Julian’s grandmother’s funeral. The way it was placed, smack-dab in the middle of all that tension, just kind of killed the buzz for me. And really slowed the story down at a point where I kind of needed it to keep going. Maybe if it had been shorter, and more focused on the Julian/Danny aspects of the past, it would not have felt like some type of intermission, but even though I think we needed some of the information given to us there, how it was done lacked a little finesse. Also there were some points where I had trouble figuring out if we were back in the present or still hanging out in the past. Lengthy flashbacks are a bit of a pet-peeve with me, so if I must endure them I at least like to have a clear idea what is going on and why it needs to be said.

Still, it was a good story, and I really enjoyed reading it. Gabby was a great side-character and Julian’s mom was fun. Bossy and direct, but also very loving. Andy threw me for a bit of a loop, but I do hope he finds someone a little less Julian to shack up with. And despite my dislike of that whole debacle in the middle, what with the douchebaggery and the heartbreaking, I loved watching Julian and Danny, if not fall in love, at least wise the hell up and tell each other. Now all they have to do is convince Gabby to never ever cook anything ever again (though I think I was crying a bit, ‘cause I was laughing so hard when Danny and Julian finally got a chance to see the massacre in the kitchen). I stayed up till six am, laughed, cried, and growled angrily…so I think I can say this story was well worth the read.

And now it's official, I found another favorite author!

Julian is an incredible narrator and I really enjoyed his sense of humor and the fact that he knows what he wants and he knows what he is like. He pursues Daniel, at first trying to be near him, doing things his roommate does, trying to be seductive, but he never pretends to be someone else, he is not a deceiver. He was so cute in his klutziness and I think I have rarely laughed so much while reading as with the touch football scene in the beginning.

The story seemed real and the actions of the protagonists seemed real. There is no big misunderstanding preventing Julian and Danny from being together, there are little misunderstandings, those that happen in everyday's life when someone is trying to achieve a goal, but the stakes are too high and you have to guard yourself to be able to retreat with dignity and not much hurt if the attempt fails.

There was a point in the book where the author almost lost me and it was in the feedback of the funeral of Julian's grandmother. It was only later that I understood why it was so important, only when Danny spoke to Julian about that moment. It was very moving and it showed Danny's fragility and even if at one point he had behaved like a jerk, I was able to forgive him.

The cast of secondary characters is wonderful, from Julian's mother to Julian's best friend Gabby. I must say that Brad, Gabby's fiancé, has a special place in my heart. He's lovely!

This is romance at its finest!

DNF at 25%. Disliked the OTT main character and his OTT friends from the start. Everyone was a stereotype. I bailed when the MC and his date were in the restaurant smoking cigarettes/cigars and talking about politics. 🙄😒

Ethan Day has done it again, written another book I love. He has such a way with words and such a great sense of humor the books I’ve read from him so far have never failed to make me laugh out loud. Julian... he is funny and sweet someone you would be happy and lucky to have in your life and even though he was the one that was hurting I thought he was such a strong character. Normally I don’t like women in my M/M stories but if they are like Gabby and a BFF I love it. It was funny when the two of them got together it’s the type of relationship that a lot of us wish we had in our lives.

Danny was a harder character to figure out, aside from Julian’s thoughts we don’t know much about him. I can’t say I didn’t like him but neither can I say I really liked him. I would have been happier if we could know more about his feelings, I was hoping that was going to happen when Julian and Danny had their beautiful night together but that didn’t happen, something was always missing for me where Danny was concerned but not enough that I didn’t thoroughly enjoy this story.

Even though this story had some angst I found it sweet, romantic and an easy read something that left me with a smile on my face.

I need more Ethan Day in my life. He writes with the best humor. I'd LOVE to be friends with all of his MCs. Julian has to be my favorite, by far. There are so many quotable LAUGH OUT LOUD moments (even if they're during an angsty part of the story). Only Day could pull that off as well as he does. I wanted to smack Danny in the head and I fear I relate entirely too much with Julian (may be why he's one of my favorite characters ever). Funny while still angsty. Great read! Can't wait for my next Ethan Day novel.

Totally loved it. Fell in love again. This man has such a way with humor and emotion and characters that are so...just normal. Not the perfect person, the kind of people we all know and probably are, to a certain extent, flawed and clumsy, needy and hopeful. I love reading Ethan Day's work. A definite recommend.

So... This is how this little gem of a book made me feel...

...and I can't seem to wipe the face-splitting grin off my face just yet. This was my first Ethan Day book, and it will certainly not be my last!

As You Are is hilarious, sweet, with just the right amount of angst, and it's just the perfect book for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Julian is a firm believer in true love, but his views on romance are a little twisted. He's waiting for The One, but fails to see what's right in front of him, which is why he's been in love with his roommate Danny for over a year, and thinks his feelings are not reciprocated. Julian is quirky, funny, kind of a neurotic mess, and he can be bratty, stubborn, and judgmental. I found myself wanting to smack him during a few scenes. But luckily, he has two strong women in his life to keep him grounded.

Speaking of, Gabby, Julian's best friend, was hilarious. I especially enjoyed the kitchen scene–it was laugh-until-you-cry funny. This woman's a riot! And also, Julian's mom, Delilah, was such a great character. She was always there for her son, but not in an overbearing way, and the way she took Danny under her wing was endearing.

Danny is fan-freaking-tastic, and I love him! He seems to be an arrogant asshole, who's always bringing home a new fling, seemingly to flaunt them in Julian's face. But that's just an act, as he's also in love with his roommate. He goes and proves it, too, when he takes the first step towards pursuing Julian. Apart from his mistake, I just wanted to hug him and tell him not to worry when he became all jealous. I wish there was more insight as to how his mind worked, because that intrigued me. But eh, guess you can't have it all.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book, and I'm looking forward to reading more of Ethan Day's work!

I don't know if Ethan Day, the author, is like one of his characters, but I like to think so, since Julian from As You Are, Aden from Dreaming of You and Davis from Self Preservation, are men that I'd like to know, and they have all one thing in common, they firmly believe in Love, in The One that will make you happy, and despite the age, or the time spent waiting for him, they know that sooner or later the happily ever after will be there also for them.

Ethan Day and his men also represent perfectly the common idea people have of a mid-twenty, thirty-something gay men: good looking but not gym butch, cultured and bright, with a deep passion for all his glamour and fashion, a love for the old divas like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford (if they are a bit more radical for Katherine Hepburn, more European leaning, for the "other" Hepburn, Audrey). It seems a stereotype? I can already listen some of you say, "this is not real, this is how people tag the gay community, but reality is way more different?" Right? Wrong! The gay community is "also" it, but not only. If you want to read a gay romance, you have to know that you gay character can be like Julian, not all are some Alpha Males or omega men.

I like Julian, he is a man who knows his own faults but likes them. He is a bit crazy, very much lazy and easily distracted. He is almost thirty years old and he is still living on his parents shoulders, even if he went out of home at 18 years old to attend college. He has a job as bartender to pay his tuition (for the fourth time trying to finish a degree), but the car he drives is his father's gift, the credit card he uses to buy clothes is his mother's, and so on. Is Julian's repentant to live like that? No, and why should he be? His parents are all right with that, his roommate Danny is more than happy to share the living expenses and Julian has all day full with his best friend Gabby, his mother's visits and whatever else catch his very shifting attention, most of the time dreaming of finding the right man and settle down.

There is a problem: he is in love with Danny. And Danny is a man-heater that brings back a different boy every night. At first Julian dreamed that sooner or later Danny will awake one day to the realization that he was in love with Julian, but when that day never came, Julian behaved like a child to whom was refused a toy he wanted... the toy is not so good after all. And so now Julian wants to show to Danny that he can have a good man by his side, and the good man has to be Andy... but even if Andy kisses as a pro, and is handsome and with a wonderful job, he is also Republicans and very religious, two things that Julian is unable to move over on.

In all of this maybe Danny is a little on the backstage: it's not that he is a bad character, it's only that Julian shines so much that he overwhelms a bit his counterpart. Danny is probably like most of the mid-thirty men out there (and no, I'm not meaning gay men, this is common to all men), he is comfortable with his life as it's, he doesn't see why he has to change that, but then he has not yet realized that, in 10 years or so, finding new young chicken every night will be harder and harder, and also that, probably, it's better to come home to always the same person, who knows and loves you. Sound boring? To me it sounds happiness.

All the novel is a big one question: will Julian renounce to his dream of Mr Right, and settle down for a Mr Not-so-much-Right-but-almost? And it's funny and light and so good to follow him, again, I had the feeling to really see the author in this novel, this is probably the best of the three I read. Ethan Day is growing with his novels, and in a way, I think he stopped to write what he thought people wanted to read, to finally write what he likes, and in doing so, he is gifting us with Comedy books that are the paper version of the Comedy movies I love so much.

My Goodreads friend Julio who has changed his name to Exhibit A wrote:

"I should hate such a delusional, judgy, twinkzilla of an MC, yet do not.

I should detest another plot that could be neatly resolved with a five-minute conversation, yet do not.

I should revile the parade of cliche supporting characters, like the sassy mom, or the neurotic fag-hag, or any of them, really."

You hit all the right points Julio. There was no plot. It was the famous M/M romance trope The Big Misunderstanding only it wasn't so big and as Julio said it could have been resolved with a five minute conversation. Only where you forgive this crap, I cannot.

This book does not represent any gay men I know. The characters talk like it's the 1970s with wealthy, empty headed gays babbling constant complaints over nothing while they constantly drink, spending every moment with their female BFF, showing wit by spouting sarcasm and acting like the final arbiters of all things. The writing is like a Thorne Smith novel which would be a complement if it was about 1920s heterosexuals. Unlike the sophisticated humor of Smith's Topper, As You Are substitutes falsely urbane, utterly frivolous repartee.

Nobody talks like the self centered, useless, uninteresting, uneducated and foolish rich kid who is the MC and constantly, embarrassing specimen of a gay man. Julio called him a "delusional, judgy, twinkzilla" which sounds about right to me.

It is humiliating to see a gay man portrayed as a female airhead in love with a hard working, hard bodied, educated masculine man. It's a chick-with-a-dick story. It's a book without a story. Most of all it's surprising that the author of one of the funniest and highly entertaining book and sequel Sno Ho and Life in Fusion would put out such and insipid and unfunny novel.

I know I'm being highly judgmental too but my comments here only express my reaction to a book I had to struggle to finish.

First of all I must say I liked this book. Really enjoy it, and probably it could have my 5 stars. So why I'm giving 3? Because the writer is not new to me... I read two AMAZING DELICIOUS romance called Sno Ho and the sequel Life in Fusion... and that's the problem.

As you are is a very good romance, and Julian is a funny narrator... but unfortunately I really despise Danny, the slut. .

So, yes i would recommend this book, but I would also tell you to first read Sno Ho (and certainly also the sequel Life in Fusion). Ethan Day is an amazing writer, and I think his best work is not this book... but the Sno Ho serie.

2.75 stars.

After reading the blurb, I am excited to read this. So there I go downloaded this book and started reading.

I want to give the other readers a chance to give this a try so I'll start to the things I liked about this book.

It's funny and sweet. You'll laugh reading this book. I also love the sarcasm of the MC.

I love Julian's parents. Though their appearances in the book is brief, I think they are both great characters.

But the it was a struggle read for me at some point. It started good actually, I feel the connection to Julian immediately. I don't know if it is just me but going to middle of this book, questions keep popping at my head like "Really? For someone who is suppose to not like Julian in a romantic way, Danny sure does love to always grab his ass." I mean it's not clear that Danny don't like to be with Julian AT ALL.

The flashbacks. I know that flashbacks is important in making the story more solid and explain things but the way the author used it in this story is kind of annoying at times. Like sometimes I don't know I've sent to the past. I have to go back and read a few lines for it to make sense. It's confusing..

I know I am whining. But I thought I would love this very much coming from the blurb. Maybe I set my expectations too high. But for those who wants to read this and reading this review, give this book a try. Maybe you'll like more than I did.

On the one hand this was a sweet & humorous love story & I liked Julian's voice in the story. On the other, the flashbacks were really annoying. Maybe it was where they were placed. Just when something happens in the present time is when we get a flashback & not a very quick one either.

Also Danny, the love interest, is not very fleshed out at all. We know about him from what we're told is his past & what happens in flashbacks, but in present day, there is very little Julian/Danny interaction shown. There's lots shown between Julian & his best friend or with his date with Andy or with his mom. Danny is like a shadow character. We needed something to show what they would be like as a couple & why they're in love (I'm still not sure why. Because Danny is good looking?) The resolution to their issues felt rushed as well.

I prefer it if both romantic partners are strongly written characters on the page which was not the case in this story. This story was lighthearted & funny but as a romance story it was ultimately unsatisfying.

OMG… I liked this book! Luckily I didn’t read it in public, it cracked me up so hard I couldn’t stop laughing out loud.

Julian is just… Julian. Funny, quirky, clumsy, a little nutty… and very gay… and in love with his roommate Danny. After more than one year of unrequited love he finally figures it’s time to get over his feelings for Danny and move on.

Exactly then Danny makes a move on Julian and these two have sex with each other. When Julian wakes up the next day Danny avoids Julian and does something horrible, something that breaks Julian’s heart…

Ethan’s writing is entertaining, filled with humor and banter. With Julian and Danny he created snarky and wonderful heroes who have to find out that the journey to true love can be a bumpy road.

So if you want to read a story with a big smile (okay, add a few frowns) on your face, you’re gonna enjoy the this one. :)

I finished this book and went 'awww' *g* I usually don't read many first person books, but I loved this one. Julien was a fabulous character and his personality and sense of humor totally sucked me into the book. Even though it's almost 200 pages, I read it in one sitting. I'll definitely be adding Ethan Day's backlist to my TBR pile.

I swear that at some points, Julian and I have similar traits *lol*. This is a nice read -- I found both Julian and Danny as likeable. The ending is you know, romcom sweet. The only thing that keeps me from giving it 4 stars is I don't really enjoy the back and forth flashback. It makes me feel disconnected to the story somehow.

3 Stars…

Julian Hallowell, 28, a Hopeful—hopeful romantic has only one thing that I had truly ever wanted: to fall in love and live happily ever after. In a cute way, he can be an egocentric, frivolous but neurotic queer, a one-man show of nuttiness. Julian is Danny’s roommate .

Danny Wallace, 31, just plain fucking hot is a walking hard-on, always on the prowl for some boy-band wannabe to bed down for the night. And “You have enough men in and outta here. We practically need a revolving door.”

Julian has had a crush on his landlord, Danny from the beginning, Danny was The One.. When his affections are not reciprocated eventually, I stopped kidding myself and swallowed the hard truth. and Julian starts dating again.

Seeing Julian going out with other men something happened to me when I found out you were going on a date. is hard for Danny to coop with. made me sick to my stomach.

Julian being a neurotic gay man with a lot of fun quirks makes for quite some humor in this story. Especially the relationship dynamic with his BFF Gabby and his mother brings a healthy doses of funny situations to the story.

I just was very disappointed with the ending, it felt rushed. IMO Danny had to do way more groveling to win Julian and there should have been a lot more explaining and making-up.
I could understand why Danny held back, but it was just enough to do away with two sentences.

I didn't like:

I really was extremely annoyed about the amount of smoking! On almost every page they were smoking! It was very off putting!

It's been years since I read this book and thanks to audible's 'Escape' package I took advantage of the chance to revisit it in audio format and I enjoyed things just a bit more to be honest. The story was as delightful as I remember and Jason Frazier did a super job with the narration.

Definitely recommended if you're a fan of audio books and Ethan Day.

Julian has been in love with his best friend and roommate, Danny, forever. He believes they'd be perfect together, but Danny loves not being shackled to a relationship and would much rather move from man to man. He isn't looking for love, like Julian, he just wants instant pleasure.

I was disappointed with this book for a number of reasons.

1. There was absolutely no build up of the relationship between Julian and Danny. Much of their interaction was told in flashbacks. We see how they grew to be friends, but the progression of their romantic relationship seemed nonexistent.

2. The book was weighed down with too much interaction between Julian and his good female friend, Gabby, his mother and other random friends who really didn't need to be included. This just seemed like unnecessary filler.

3. I really wished Julian would have let go of his dream of being with Danny. I know there had to have been a great guy out there for him, but he was so blinded by his 'love' for Danny that he couldn't really see anyone else.

4. The way Andy was handled annoyed me. He seemed like a really nice guy and I believe he and Julian could have had a great relationship.

5. Danny's reasons for everything he did was bs and I wanted to shake him and say, "grow up and grow a pair!"

The one bright spot in this book was Julian. He was adorable, endearing and I just wanted to hug him. I really liked his character and wished he could have looked past the ideal of Danny on many occasions.

I haven't given up on this author because there are other books of his that I'm anxious to read. I just hope I have better luck with them because As You Are definitely missed the mark for me.
