The Cat Lady Chronicles #5
A Killer Heart
What happens when the hunters become the hunted?
Kit McCafferty is an upstanding citizen of the magical city of Coldstream. Mostly.
She’s a good neighbour. She has a fabulous partner, an occasionally tidy home, and only a moderately alarming number of cats. Her days as a professional assassin with Eagle Enforcers and Liquidators are behind her. Or so she thinks.
When Kit volunteers to assist local law enforcement with crowd control, she comes face-to-face with her former life. Someone is trying to destroy EEL — the discreet but deadly firm of assassins she once called home — and they’re not concerned about collateral damage. They’re willing to raze Coldstream to the ground to finish the job.
Whoever is targeting EEL knows its inner workings and its secrets. Kit’s old friends and colleagues, as well as the citizens of Coldstream, are at risk. To stop blood from spilling onto the city’s glittering streets and shadowed alleyways, Kit must decide who she is now - a heroic citizen determined to protect her city or a stone cold killer.
Walking away might not be an option.
This is the fifth book in the urban fantasy series The Cat Lady Chronicles. Expect magic, adventure and a whole lot of cats.

An absolute delight of a book. Highly recommended.
Rating: 4.75⭐️
I just love Helen Harper’s The Catherine Lady Chronicles and this might be my favorite book of the series so far.
In A Killer Heart we finally get to explore more of cat sith Kit McCafferty’s history, both her dangerous past and her current life’s work with MET, the Magical Enforcement Team, besides Captain Montgomery.
Kit’s past history as an assassin has often been referenced in other stories but here it’s an integral part of the book. The EEL, or Eagle Enforcers and Liquidators where Kit was employed and later retired from after 20 years as an assassin, is under attack.
And whoever is targeting the people who work or worked there are harming others around them, innocents, as well as. Kit is immediately involved, both as a secretly retired assassin and as someone who is working with the MET, who is investigating the attacks.
This is a great story. Kit is trying to balance her life, her past family as a EEL assassin and her new life in the Coldstream community which she’s embraced. Along with her new lone wolf boyfriend.
Harper is terrific at showing Kit in her multiple identities, cat sith, dangerous assassin , an older woman who’s body is being uncooperative when she needs it most, and the “harmless cat lady “ persona she uses when she’s trying to make herself look like a helpless woman. It always feels credible to the reader, valid and occasionally hilarious.
The cats remain as cat like as ever, intriguing and mysterious. I love them.
The investigation is a good one. And ends satisfactorily.
The book ending however, oh my. An hilarious cliffhanger of sorts. It’s not fair to have to wait until next year to see the outcome of this one!
An absolute delight of a book. Highly recommended. A romantic relationship with no spice is included.

This latest book in the Cat Chronicles series was a great one! Kit McCafferty is such a strong lead character and one of my faves as well - she is comfortable in her own skin and her own powers, she bows down to no-one, does what she wants when she wants and is fiercely independent and determined. Yet at the same time, she's loyal, caring, loving, funny and will stop at nothing to help others.
In this one, Kit starts off doing a bit of crowd control for a visiting member of a royal family, but when she spots something in the sky, she springs into action to stop something from going stupidly wrong - something that could inadvertently cause a war!
What Kit does find out though is way more serious. Her former employers are in trouble, serious trouble. Someone seems to be out to take their revenge on EEL and their employees and Kit takes it upon herself to find out who, before anyone else gets hurt. I loved this story arc and Kit and Thane's investigation into what was going on. These two made for a great team and I loved the hilarious addition of She Who Commands Werewolves on their journey as well - her reactions to various people and situations was brilliant! I loved finding out a bit more about Kit's past as well.
If you haven't started this series yet, then I highly recommend that you do so. You don't necessarily have to have read all the other books to enjoy this one, but it is a great series and so much more fun if you do!
I received an ARC copy of this book, but this review is my own honest one. Thank you Helen for yet another fantastic read! Keep them coming!

Kit McCafferty is a mellowing middle-aged cat lady in the magical metropolis of Coldstream.
As a powerful Cat Sidhe, she worked as an assassin with EEL, but now she is retired. Her lover, Thane, is a fabulously fit and fluffy ginger werewolf, and her cluttered cottage is filled with precocious pussycats. She is happy.
After volunteering for training as a Minor investigator with the MET ( Magical Enforcement Team) she signs-up to aid them with crowd control. A Fae Prince is coming to town and nobody knows why, but the crowd is eager, excited, and electrified. Kit interrupts a potential assassination by a member of her former job. Soon she is unwillingly reeled back in to the Eagle Enforcers and Liquidators world to discover who or what is trying to destroy them. There are queer and uncanny deaths of EEL members in the city's alleyways & avenues, with bombs exploding everywhere. Whoever it is, they're unconcerned about casualties, and they seem to know all of the team's secrets and skeletons-in-the-closet. Her former friends and comrades and the entire town are in jeopardy. Can Kit keep the blood from splashing into Coldstream's serene and shady streets? Will the remaining executioners collaborate to uncover and catch the killer(s)? Book 5 in The Cat Lady Chronicles is chaotically quirky and crawling with capricious cats. Helen Harper is an auto-buy for me. I love to escape into her delightfully delicious worlds! 5 CAT Stars!

After the adventure in the night maze Kit is glad her newest assignment is security for a fae princes visit. It was supposed to be a simple job until Kit catches a glint from the roof top, when she arrives to where she saw the glint she found a young man preparing to shoot the fae. After she unarmed and bound the wound be shooter she discovers he worked for her former employer EEL. Which brings up a lot of questions EEL would not send a young rookie to assassinate a fae prince and the only thing his death would bring is war. Kit and Thane brought the boy to Kits house to interrogate and discovers that there is something going on at EEL that's very bad. Kit decides to go and talk to her former employer. What she finds is a mess the original director has died and someone else is in charge not only that but half the assassins she worked with are now dead including her friend Louise. Upset by the loss of her friend Kit dives in to find out how experienced and careful assassins were murdered. The clues are pointing to either an inside job or a former client looking for revenge and an inside job is just not making sense. The clues also point to something a little closer to home. It's up to Kit and Thane to find the killer before more innocent people and assassins die. I loved this newest cat lady story!

Title: A Killer Heart (The Cat Lady Chronicles Book 5)
Author: Helen Harper
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5 stars)
Tagline: When her past returns, Kit must choose: protect her city or embrace her old life.
Review:
Helen Harper delivers another fast-paced and captivating installment in The Cat Lady Chronicles with “A Killer Heart.” As always, Kit McCafferty is a delightfully complex protagonist—torn between her desire for a quiet, magical life and the dangerous shadows of her past. The blend of cozy domesticity (complete with her ever-growing clowder of cats) and high-stakes urban fantasy action keeps the pages turning.
The plot moves briskly, with plenty of twists as Kit is drawn back into the world of assassins she thought she’d left behind. Harper balances humor, heart, and tension well, and the magical city of Coldstream feels as vivid and quirky as ever.
While the story is engaging, the pacing stumbles in a few moments, and some side characters could have been fleshed out more. However, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise enjoyable read.
Overall, “A Killer Heart” is a strong addition to the series—equal parts thrilling and charming. Fans of urban fantasy and magical mysteries (with a dash of feline mischief) will find much to love.

Helen Harper never disappoints and Kit McCafferty is the cat lady ex assassin that you can’t help but love. Kit is, on the face of it, an unlikely hero, having spent 20 years as an assassin and now living in a household of cats with unusual names. Kit is far from an ordinary cat lady through, her cat sith abilities aside, she also has a strong loyalty to her home of Coldstream and the people who live there.
Kit uses the skills she acquired and her natural abilities, alongside the help of her cats and Thane, her werewolf boyfriend, to work out what is happening at her old employment, and why people who worked there are dying. The mysterious Trilby has a role to play, which we are still to understand, but nonetheless he does provide aide. Kit starts out this book with her volunteer role with MET leading to her helping with security for a visit from a Fae prince, but her relationship with MET does undergo some challenges as the book progresses.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to discovering more about Trilby, seeing Kit and Thanes relationship develop and finding out exactly where the unexpected ending takes us, and Kit, next.

I have loved Kit McCafferty since book one, and somehow, with every new installment, I love her even more. This fifth book was no exception.
Kit and Thane, along with their ever-growing collection of cats, make such a fantastic team. Whether they are in the middle of an investigation or simply sharing one of those quieter, cozier moments, their relationship is a joy to read. I love the balance between the mystery and their personal lives, and how naturally their relationship has developed throughout the series.
A Killer Heart delivers another great mystery, a strong cast of characters, and a storyline that gives us a little more insight into Kit’s past with the EEL. Those glimpses into her history added another layer to her character and left me even more curious about what is still waiting to be uncovered.
And that ending. Just one tiny moment was enough to make me laugh and leave me desperately wanting the next book. I already know I am going to have a lot of fun with what comes next.

Another awesome book in this series.
Kit is happy with her life, her boyfriend Thane and of course her cats. She also volunteers with the local law enforcement.
When assisting with crowd control over the arrival of a Fae prince, she noticed someone set up to assassinate him. Stopping the attempt, she realizes that the would-be assassin is from EEL, the assassin company she used to work for. This calls for some investigation.
When her friend, ex-assassin Louise is murdered, things get really interesting.
With help from Thane, She Who Controls Werewolves and a couple other of her cat friends, she sets out to see what’s happening.
This book has action, mystery, humour, and more.
It is an easy reading, fun book with some darker spots.
I do have one problem with these books; I keep wondering what my cat’s real name is. But she basically cuddles for the whole read so I guess she’s happy with her name.
Definitely recommend this book and series.

Every book I read in this series, I just love Kit more and more. In this latest, Kit must investigate because her formal colleagues are getting murdered one by one, which shouldn’t be so easy. I continue to love the relationship between Thane and Kit; he just sits back and lets her be herself and doesn’t try to control her in any way. Add in an intriguing mystery, some wonderful characters, and great writing, and you have yourself a satisfying read in many ways. And I can’t fail to mention that ending…that ending! OMG, how will this impact Kit?!? LOL! Fans of this author and series will love this latest installment. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Nothing but love
Kit and werewolf shifter Thane and their clowder of cats are a hoot! But since Kit is a cat sith, it’s all within her capabilities. While Kit is retired as an assassin, somehow she ends up investigating the deaths of former colleagues that worked for EEL also and why they are being killed off.
This community is so engaging and intriguing with flaws and quirks that make them interesting and likable.
The answers to the murders of Kit’s former colleagues are disturbing and frightening. Even with the help of her former organization and unexpected assistance from the enigmatic Trilby, once the villain is revealed it is shocking and dealing with them and the aftermath, is quite a surprise and an absolutely worthwhile read

Kit is still one of my favourite protagonists- not just because she is friend to cats, but because she has actual life experience and very much realises that nothing is black and white. We find out more about her past with EEL in this instalment, as well as ongoing adventures with the Met.
It’s four rather than five for two reasons:
1. I really want focus on Trilby - there’s something intriguing there and I want to know more
2. There were a couple of loose ends that I felt should have been mentioned but weren’t - no spoilers but a certain personage just - disappeared.
However I loved the tie in with some previous characters ☺️
Love this world, eagerly awaiting more!

I love these stories, they are quite witty and amusing. Kit was an assassin, as we all know, she got a job as minor investigations, it passes a bit of time, even though she is not really in need of a job. She is helping out with crowd control when a fae prince arrives, with a lot of fanfare. Someone from EEL, her assassin employer tries to get him and that causes a chain of events, with the mysterious Trilby involved in the edges of the case. Lots of EELs are dying and Kit investigates to see what she can do about and why. She does of course solve the case in the end!

This is my favourite Kit book so far. This series just keeps getting better and better.
Kit discovers that her old employer is struggling in more ways than one ; the worst being a number of assassins have been murdered. After a situation that sees her nearly killed, she realises she is going to get seriously involved in solving the situation.
Her cats are stars once more and her relationship with Thane is rock solid which is such an integral part of her story now. Still absolutely love her neighbour Dave, who knew he was a fairy fan boy - so cute. It is awesome the way Helen weaves all the little pieces of the Coldstream community together. You just can’t go wrong with a Helen Harper book - it is a morning, afternoon or evening well spent getting lost in this book. Thanks so much for an arc to read and review - brilliant.

This author and this series never fails to delight and impress! This book takes us into Kit's past with the assassin's league and introduces us to a host of new characters which I hope may drop in now and again into future outings! All in all a satisfying whodunnit while at the same time progressing the character development and over arching story.....again with the last page cliffhanger! This one wasn't too painful though and makes for an interesting next book! Thoroughly recommend!

Love the Cat Lady! 🐱
Another great addition to Kit’s story! This time, the threats are much more personal, which makes everything feel a little more intense about what’s coming next.
I really enjoyed seeing Kit deal with new challenges while continuing to grow into her role. And, of course, the adorable cats remain one of my favourite parts of the series!
I can’t wait for more adventures, trouble and, hopefully, plenty more cats with Kit. Bring on the next one!

High stakes and tensions when we get to learn more about Kit’s former place of employ as an assassin—and the mystery of who’s wiping out such experienced killers! I really enjoyed the mix of cast in this one, thane being involved, cat sitb powers in use, the MET integration, and Trilby being even more of an enigma than usual! It’s a great mix of existing dilemmas, blasts from the past, and new chaos. I really enjoyed the fast pace and exciting action!

good
I really like this series. I love kit and her boyfriend and her crazy cats. Everybody thinks she’s a crazy cat lady, but there’s only a few people that realize what she really is. The place where she used to work as an assassin is going under and people are dying. Kit and her previous employer are trying to figure out who is killing assassins before Kit is the next one on the list.

Explosive! Magical! Mysterious!
Am I talking about the story plot or Kit and Thane’s relationship? Or maybe I’m referring to the town where all the action takes place. I guess you won’t know unless you read this Awesome! Fantastic! Head-turning! book for yourself.
Seriously, though, if you’ve read the first four books, you already love Kit, Thane, and all the delightful Cat-Who kitties who give these stories their character. You’ll love this one, too.

Another fantastic instalment of Kit’s life in Coldstream. She’s a minor investigator for the MET. Ghosts from Kit’s assassin past are coming back for a visit and we get a good taste of what her past life was like.
As always brilliantly written, great characters and moves along at an entertaining pace. Highly recommended.

Helen I don't know how you do it, but please keep doing it.
If you like detective stories, magic and romance then this book has got it all. I really enjoy that the lead character is a middle aged cat lady ex assassin with a werewolf "boyfriend". Each story is complete in itself but tge side characters keep getting more interesting.

Usual Good Read
Readers can count on Helen Harper for fun interesting fantasy tales, and this keeps that standard perfectly. Among the enjoyable aspects of the Cat Lady Chronicles is the way the author includes all sorts of fey and magical peoples. It makes for more variety in magic and less predictable plots.

You know you’re going to have a good time when you start a Helen Harper book, and this was definitely a good time. Great characters, that continue to develop, and situations that intrigue and have you reading faster and faster. I can’t believe I have to wait till next year for the next volume.

A fun addition to the series.
Kit is in trouble because eel is in trouble. She doesn't know who to trust or who not to trust. In this fun adventure kit discovers that current and past members of eel are being targeted and killed. She also has an angry fairy King to contend with all in all, it's a fun story.

Hooray for Helen Harper!
I adore every book she’s published! This series may be my favorite. The magic blended with mystery, mayhem, and humor is a fabulous combination. Add a touch of romance and a small herd of cats and Harper has a winning combination.
Looking forward to more stories!

Great series
This series is great. I like that it doesn't follow the "protagonist with a shady past who feels guilty and is trying to make amends" trope. Kit may have been an assassin, but this story shows that life isn't black and white. Kit doesn't feel guilty or like she needs to make amends, but she can still grow and change as a person. Can't wait for the next book!

4.25 stars. This was another strong installment. In A KILLER HEART, assassins from EEL are being eliminated, and Kit and Thane agree to help find the culprit.
There are several sightings of the Maine Coon cat from the last installment, and the ending was quite interesting.
I look forward to continuing this series.

great for an off day
Mildly spoilerish - I got into this series with the cats and killing and I will always find it funny that cats are “demons” 😂 Kit is someone I aspire to be when I’m older and in need of cats, and I love that in spite of what she did in the past, she wants a normal life with love and family and it’s just such a nice balance to see it all.

I love how Kit is portrayed, you know what a good heart she has and you know her stubborn streak will mean she's going to keep going until she finds out the truth.
I like the aspect of her being able to turn into a cat, although it didn't actually feature much in this book.
There are some great supporting charcters.
An engrossing read.
