Lachlan MacLeod survived an English dungeon. He held his own under torture and brutality. He survived the death of his wife and alienation from his family. He managed to take back his ancestral home and restore his son's inheritance.
But the English threat has never truly abated. According to his nephew, invasion is immanent. Tired of being subject to the whims of the English, Lachlan will take control of his own destiny. By any means necessary.
Lady Evangeline, daughter of an invading English earl, has been raised to privilege and the expectation of an advantageous foreign marriage. She is as eager to escape her father's machinations as Lachlan is eager to kidnap her, though the wilds of the Scottish Highlands could be a tad more welcoming.
The secret she holds could have deadly consequences--not only for Lachlan, but for his entire clan, not to mention the proud English lady and her retinue. But this is one secret she cannot wait to spill...
R.L. Syme is a USA Today best-selling author. She writes mysteries and cozy mysteries, as well as nonfiction. R.L. grew up reading Nancy Drew mysteries passed on by her grandmother.
Lachlan’s Revenge is the first book of R.L. Syme I have read. It is the final book in her Highland Renegades series and focuses on Lachlan MacLeod, the leader of his MacLeod clan. I have not read a lot of Highlander books in the past (I know, I know… where have I been???) so this was a fun new-ish world for me.
The plot of the story moves very fast, and I don’t want to give anything away since there are many twists and turns from the very first chapter. Essentially Lachlan has planned to kidnap the daughter of a neighboring English earl who has been awarded Lachlan’s land by the English King. Lachlan does not honor the English King’s command because he in Scotland and does not believe the king has any jurisdiction over Scottish land ownership. By kidnapping and forcing the earl’s daughter into marriage Lachlan believes the earl will have no choice but to back down from trying to take over Lachlan’s castle and surrounding land. Needless to say, this plan goes awry very early in the book.
This was an enjoyable fast read for me. The plot-line was exciting and kept me engaged. The love story was sweet. It wasn't a steamy love story, but one built on mutual understanding and respect. There is not a love scene at all in the book, and the language is very clean, so if you are one who likes loves stories that leave the physical part off-page this one is for you. If you are someone who likes a bit of “romance” with their romance don’t expect that here. All-in-all a sweet story that has a nice plot. If you liked the other three in the series, I can’t see you being disappointed with this one.
~This book was graciously provided to me for an honest review via NetGalley.~
You could feel how Lachlan cared for his woman, "Elsa's chest rose and fell with deliberate slowness and Lachlan couldn't help himself watching it. Erm. Her. Watching her." I loved how he was with kids, even if they weren't his there was so much love, "Lachlan took the boy onto his lap and spread the paper in front of him. "What can you make out, my boy." I liked this book I loved my Scottish man.
This is a good read. I liked it so much I read the whole way through. Rebecca has some of the most realistic people here with a very busy plot. This story is set in Scotland, post Wallace. Lachlan, the Clan Laird of McLeod, needs to bring safety from feuds. He decides to steal the Earl's daughter as the Earl Thinks he owns the Castle. There are so many spoilers it is hard to keep track of who goes where. Some places are so serious that it comes across as a comedy of errors. Lady Evangeline and Cairean love each other. Lachlan is mad they are harming the Clan. Big Spoiler. There is a Big Spoiler over Lachlan and Elsa. They figure out how to save the end of this story but I'll never tell. You will have to grab this story and find out on your own. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
Life is such an adventure! And in this story, R.L. Syme lets us follow a headstrong hero that soon discovers even the best laid plans often fail. Full of pride for his land, protectiveness of his clan, and love of his family, Lachlan must make decisions that will change the lives of all those around him, even if his gut tells him that some of his actions could be considered wrong. I really enjoyed watching the heroes true character evolve as the author tortures him with consequences from the actions of other characters. Intrigue, tender moments, and unexpected romance....this story has it all. I have not read anything else by R.L.Syme, but this was a great stand-alone story even though it's part of a series (The Highland Renegades). I will be watching for her future releases.
This is the best one in the series Lachlan MacLeod is such a well rounded character. He is a widower who is still very handsome at the age of 40. He must protect his clan and he will do anything to achieve this. Therefore, based on information he received from his nephew Cailean, a plan is concocted and he marries his enemies daughter. This should allow for peace.
Elsa Bouchard is stunned to learn that she has just been married to this huge Highlander. There has been such a misunderstanding. Both the hero and heroine are very likeable. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Again, this is the best in the series. The author did a good job with this one.
I really enjoyed this Highland romp! What starts out as a kidnapping to force a marriage, becomes a comedy farce, as Lachlan MacLeod tries to rescue his family home and the ensure the safety of his clan. The story line was very well written and very entertaining. I loved the story, and couldn't put it down once, I started, a real rage turner. 5/5
The writing is amazing and so are the characters. Lachlan will do anything to save his family. Lachlan is planing to married the English earl's daughter but he married the wrong women. Join Lachlan as he try to fix everything. A mistake can be the best thing that can happen to you.
original post at:http://ramblingsfromthischick.blogspo... This is my first time reading R.L. Syme. I was looking forward to it because she has so many great reviews and I wanted to see for myself. At first it started out like most Scottish tales. The Scots are fighting the English and they are trying to best each other. After a couple of pages I realized that Syme’s writing is completely unique and so was the rest of her story!
When the story begins Lachlan MacLeod is protecting his home. His daughter and her family is visiting and even though he is enjoying their visit he is terribly worried because he currently has set a plan in motion. This plan is specifically going to bring him the peace that he has been after and protect his family at the same time. Lachlan decides that he will have his men, his nephew included, kidnap Lady Evangeline. Lady Evangeline is the key because her father is an earl that Lachlan has been fighting against to perceive his ancestral home. Lachlan is an honorable man and is not happy about his plan but he realizes that he must do what is necessary to protect his family and his clan.
When a lady is finally revealed, he hurries to marry her, finally he is relieved because now Lady Evangeline’s father will want to keep peace between them. Now, I’m not giving too much away here, because this happens at the very beginning, but he marries another woman. Elsa Bouchard looks very similar to Lady Evangeline which is one of the reasons that she is a close servant of hers. Lachlan immediately sets out to fix this error but as can be expected some unexpected events occur. One he realizes what happened to the real Lady Evangeline. Two he also realizes that he can’t help but fall in love with Elsa. He realizes that not only she is very beautiful but she is also a great woman. Elsa has secrets of her own. She knows that Lady Evangeline’s father is blood thirsty and she is worried for everyone’s safety.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. Lachlan and Elsa were both great characters and I really liked them as a couple. Also, Syme had one adventure after another. Both Lachlan’s and Elsa’s character and bravery are challenged. Finally, I really liked and was surprised in the direction that she took Lady Evangeline’s story. I was not expecting it at all. I really enjoyed this fun highland adventure and recommend it to anyone that enjoys history, adventure and romance.
This was a great story. It was also a pretty quick read. This book was fun to read there were lots of surprises that I did not see coming. It was not as predictable as most stories are. Many stories there are conflict between the main characters. Lachlan and Elsa got along great it was great not seeing drama between the main couple. The only negative I saw was the ending. Spoiler here. I wish they did not have to leave his homeland. But that is only my opinion. I am glad they ended up together and lived happily ever after.
In this one your learn sometimes the worst mistake turns out to be the best mistake of your life. Lachlan was set out for vengeance and he believed he could have it by kidnapping Lady Evangeline. This book has intrigue, mystery, and romance. Lachlan is a good hero material because even though the things he does are questionable he has integrity that redeems him.
I Recieved a copy this book from netgalley for my honest opinions and a review.
I do love a good historical romance especially when writers can make you believe you are in that time period and thats what R.L.Syme can do to you.
Lachlan MacLeod is a survivor he survived an English dungeon. He held on and his own under torture and brutality. He survived so much even the death of his wife. He's managed to take back his home and restore his son's inheritance just the way it should be in any determined dads eyes.
But the threat from the English has never truly gone. And if he listens to his nephew an invasion is very much immanent. Tired and sick of being subject to the whims of these English scum, Lachlan will no he must take control of his own destiny. And by any means necessary.
Lady Evangeline is the daughter of an invading English earl, she has been raised to a very privilege life and the expectation of marrying higher.
She is very eager to escape her father's lies and schemes just as Lachlan is as eager to kidnap her, but is that wise ....
These secret she holds close could have very deadly consequences and not just only for Lachlan, but for everyone including his entire clan. But there is this is one secret she cannot wait to spill...
Will Love survive the harsh wilds of Scotland and take hold of both Lachlan and his lady.
This is the first book i have read by R.L. Syme and i was pleasantly surprised i was transporter back and was able to believe i was part of this story even if i was just watching it unfold before my very eyes,
I thought the story had great angst mystery and surprise so watch out readers for those sneaky surprises.
I loved all the characters even if some of them are something to be desired, and Lachlan's nephew he is some what of a daft twit i did feel sorry for him and i wanted to tell him family means more especially as Lachlan still loved his nephew after all his lies. I guess the saying love can make you foolish applied to him.
A great book well worth a read i only wish i could have read more of this story.
I liked this book, but I didn't love it and it is definitely not a keeper for me. Lachlan is an older hero, which is different, his first wife is gone and he is actually a grandfather. He decides to kidnap a very young English girl whose father is threatening to invade and reclaim Lachlan's land and marry her in order to broker peace. Of course plans never go as they should and he ends up with not a girl, but a woman who is an attendant of the girl. Elsa is pretty unhappy with being taken, but not unhappy to be away from the English. She believes Lachlan is a good man. I haven't read any of R. L. Syme's other books so I think I was a little lost, at least that is how I felt. I couldn't get into Lachlan being a grandfather and a "romantic" hero. And this book had absolutely no romance in it. I like hot and steamy love scenes and this had none. I felt like the author was telling me these two ended up together, but I didn't feel it.
I received a complimentary copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
Lachlan's Revenge is a sweet Scottish Romance Read. I liked how the author portrayed the character to be of an older cast. Instead of your typical 30 year old male hero and 18 year old heroine. You have Lachlan the Laird who is in his early 40's who is a grandfather. He is trying to protect his clan by kidnapping and marrying his enemies daughter. Then everything never goes as planned. What do you do when you kidnap an marry the wrong woman He tries to fix it. Elsa who is mistakenly kidnapped is a 36 year old woman who is trying to get back to Navarre to her son. The author took me on an adventure through the highlands and gave me a taste of romance that will stay with me for a while. This was a sweet romance with all the trappings. I caught myself chuckling in certain parts of this book. You have kidnapping, betrayal, and of course romance. If you like funny, sweet, and Scottish Romance this is definitely the book for you. I received this book for a honest review by NetGalley.
I just loved this book. From beginning to epilogue. It was fun and so much deception. Who was playing who. What would the outcome be? Can you figure out whats gonna happen before ity happens. I love books like this. I started this book last night and finished about 40 minutes ago.
You think at first he has gone nutty, stealing a girl to marry her. Just to stop her father from warring with him. But then as the book progresses. You just sit and watch as the book unfolds. Then there is a lot of "Oh dam, that gotta suck" kind of situations. I just couldn't put it down. All the characters were fun, especially his adult/married daughter. lmao What I wouldn't give to be in the room with her and her father at times.
Anyways, the book has a great plot, story progressed wonderfully and the H/H were totally believable. It was just a fun book.
What a wonderful love story of times past. Lachlan's clans history and family are his number one concern. When his nephew Cailean tries to thwart his uncle's plan on marrying the Lady Evangaline,he instead captures the attendant of the Lady Evangeline, Elsa, and plays her off at the Lady Evangaline so he can run off with the real one. Lachlan discovers the mistake and all hell breaks loose. Will Lachlan and Elsa stay married or will he get lady Evangeline to save his family from the English. Great story of suspense, history and Love.
I really liked how it wasn't the same old Scottish kidnapping story. First the characters are much older than usual. Lachlan, the main character, is in his forties. The lead female character is in her thirties. Spoiler What really made me happy was that the main girl character wasn't suppose to be kidnapped it was her lady. End of Spoiler It was a really good book. I would definitely recommend it.
I did not care for this book. However, I have not read any of the other books in the series, which could explain why I did not care for this one. I also found the ending unsatisfactory. He's just going to go I realize he took his family with him and that he got a new kid out of the deal, but it seemed kind of an odd ending.
Lachlan's Revenge is the fourth book in the series The Highlander Renegades by R.L. Syme. I didn't know about this series, but I could appreciate the story about Lachlan and Elsa even reading it as a book stand alone. A beautiful story, a historical romance set in Scotland, in the Highlands, where clan and English nobles are always at war to determine who has the power and rights to rule the lands. Lachlan is desperate to save his clan and his lands, he's gone through hell, lost his beloved ones, he is willing to do everything, even to kidnap and marry the daughter of his great enemy. Everything seems to happen too easily, and in a heartbeat Lachlan finds himself married to a beautiful unknown woman, who being gagged can't even express her consent. The comparison between the two newlyweds is one of the strengths of this book, without even meaning to be it, perhaps is one of the most fun moment, because of the reaction of Elsa. From here onwards to Lachlan plans are destroyed, twists and betrayals occur in this story that won me over. The plot is very good and the characters amazing, although I found a bit annoying cailen and Lady Evangeline, while Lachlan is truly extraordinary, as Elsa and her past. Certainly the other three books of these Highlander Renegades are going into my to-read list. Thanks Netgalley for the book.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest opinion.
Lachlan is determined to keep his land and make his family and clan proud of him once again. He comes up with a plan. He must marry the daughter of Lord Effington to force him into a truce for the sake of his daughter.
He sends his nephew Cailean to kidnap Lady Evangeline. When Cailean returns with her, gagged and hands bound, she is rushed to the Chapel where they are married. He then finds out that it isn't Evangeline his nephew has taken but her attendant Elsa.
Lachlan is shocked and when looks for Cailean to figure of what has happened, he finds his nephew is gone. Lachlan and Elsa go after him and find out a much different story.
All Elsa ever wanted was to return to Navarre, her home. She has been forced to stay in the Effington home and has been beaten while trying to leave. Lachalan has promised her he will get her back to Navarre after they get Lady Evangeline and straighten out everything.
Elsa really likes Lachlan despite the fact that he kidnapped her. She finds he is an honest, good man who only wants peace. Lachlan also finds that he likes Elsa very much. She is smart and has sense.
I like these characters. They are good people. What I really like is that they are all not 18-30. Lachlan is 40ish and a grandfather. Elsa is in her 30's.
This story has no war but personal anguish in it. It also doesn't talk much about the beauty of the land which I always enjoy. I think my main disappointment is I didn't hear the word "kilt" once and I do love my kilted men. It is well written, as are the characters. I would recommend this book.
R.L. Syme’s Lachlan’s Revenge draws you in from the beginning, keeping you from putting the book down. I read it in one setting, well past my bedtime. It was worth it!
Lachlan MacLeod makes what he believes is the best plan to protect his clan and keep his ancestral home, Assynt House, from the Earl of Effington’s anticipated invasion. He will marry the Earl’s daughter to ward off the attack, against her will if necessary.
His nephew, Cailean leads the charge to kidnap Lady Evangeline Rutledge. Brought back tied and gagged, she is forced to marry Lachlan. Then an unexpected complication rears its head.
This story is fast paced, filled with intrigue, deception, loss, love and surprising twists and turns that will push you to the edge of your seat to see how they are resolved. I was drawn into this book from the first page with characters that came alive throughout the story. Don’t pass up this great read!
I was gifted a copy of Lachlan’s Revenge in exchange for an honest review. Although this is book 4 in the series, you do not need to read the previous books to follow the story.
I received this book from NetGallery for an honest review. Lachlan needed to marry, Lady Evangeline, the English Earl of Effingham's daughter. The very earl who has plagued Scotland and the MacLeod clan, stealing their land. He did not expect it to be a love match for Lady Evangeline was the only way to save his clan. The plan was to kidnap her and force marriage upon, but something went wrong. Lachlan' s nephew kidnapped the wrong woman. Bound and gagged Elsa was married to Lachlan. And thus begins the story of how the wrong woman actually ended up to be the right woman for the MacLeod lists. To say much more would be a spoiler for anyone wanting to read this book, the last in the author's Highland Renegade series. This was an enjoyable read for several reasons, enough intrigue, and uncertainty to keep the reader interested. The fact that the hero had gray hairs in his beard and was a grandfather many times over was refreshing. This story was a great way to end this series, on a high note. A must read.
A sweet Medieval Romance. Filled with deceit, betrayal, lies, and romance, which lead to a revenge of it's own and HEA. The ending was a complete surprise to me, but well worth the angst brought on by a family member's betrayal. You have to fall in love with the H/H, the angst from their past and the passion sweet passion they in each other's arms. An absolute delight to read. I read it in one setting. Couldn't put it down, needed to know and understand what happened wit the H/H. An satisfying and enjoyable romance. Sweet, and the final book in this amazing series, by this talented author. Thank you!

This book was enjoyable but at 118 pages it was very abrupt. I really liked lachlans personality and I also liked Elsa. I loved how kind and generous she was even when she was in horrible conditions. But they fell in love way too quickly for me. It wasn't like they looked at each other and were smitten and the author did do a pretty good job of letting their feelings develop as naturally as possible given how short the book is but their relationship just didn't have time to develop as slowly as I would have liked. But overall worth the quick read!
Lachlan MacLeod has suffered at the hands of the English and survived. Now he is once again threatened by them and he sets a plan in motion with the help of his nephew Cailean. He plans to marry the daughter of the English Earl who is threatening his lands. But due to a case of mistaken identity he marries the wrong woman, the handmaiden Elsa Bouchard. But she has plans of her own. Finally she has a chance to escape the tyrant Earl's household and return to her son in Navarre but first she needs to convince Lachlan to let her go.
A highlander story with plenty of adventure. Lachlan is out for vengeance and is willing to do almost anything to get it. The story is funny and entertaining but I would have preferred a little more heat between the characters, he may be a grandfather but he isn’t dead. The story kept me entertained throughout, funny and adventurous. If you are looking for a sweet highland romance than I highly recommend.
There is nothing like a big Scot to get the blood pumping. With a few unexpected twists this will keep you satisfied while reading it on the beach. Don't worry about getting your knickers in a knot though, it is beach safe (sweet) but it is more than up to the task of keeping the mind diverted from those men not wearing kilts. (Will take a half naked kilt wearer like Lachlan over a swim truck wearer any day). Thanks for keeping me entertained.
I really enjoy enjoyed this book. For once it revolves around an older father and his devotion to protect his family. When he marries, it's to a woman around his age rather than a girl 20 years younger; which was originally intended. Although it had a sad part in there that I wish could have been avoided, but the overall story was a real page turner. Full of danger, secrets, and a happily ever after everyone can enjoy.

Lachlan MacLeod is a Highlander who will do anything to keep Scotland out of English hands. Elsa is the Englishwoman he abducts and marries to force the English hand. However, his nephew Cailan has actually abducted her maid and Lachlan marries her unknowing of Cailan's ruse. what follows is a merry romp of a man and woman thrown together who find themselves trying to undo the mistake.
