Attack of the Journal is a great book for little Star Wars fans - especially those who have enjoyed the Jedi Academy series. What we have is a workbook chock full of fun Star Wars themed imaginative activities. I would say that the age group is likely 6 to 13 or so, but I caught my husband doing some of the exercises as well! This would be perfect for kids to take on an airplane or for a long car trip since there is so much to do and so much diversity. And, honestly, it is fun.

Although this uses Jedi Academy series characters helping out or presenting, kids don't need to have read any of the Jedi Academy books to enjoy. Examples of activities include: drawing a robot, creating an image of a custom lightsaber, learning how to draw Ewoks, putting words to a cartoon strip, starting or finishing a Jedi story, making up 'Yoda wisdoms', turning your friends into Star Wars characters, making a Star Wars themed newspaper, and many, many more!

Because this is like a workbook, I would recommend getting the paper version and not the kindle. A lot of the book is either lines for writing a story, a blank page for making a newspaper, or a paneled page for creating your own comic.

The tone is upbeat, encouraging, and inviting. There's even an activity to find all the 'hidden' cloned vorpees scattered throughout the book. And heck, everyone needs an Ewok and Jawa dictionary. This is a really great idea and fun book. I highly recommend it and will enjoy watching my daughter work through it on our next plane trip (if my husband doesn't finish it first!). Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

"I liked it." - 3 out of 5 star rating.

I received this as a gift from a used bookstore... which for a 'fill-in-the-blank' style book, was not the best way to go.

This is somewhat of a choose your own adventure, in the sense of imagination driven for young adults, gift wrapped in Star Wars as the delivery vehicle for the content.

A 100% hands-on activity book, with things such as draw your own alien, what would you do if you found your very own spaceship and could fly anywhere, lets make alien pizza, fill in the blank comic book tiles, and more.

Again unfortunately my used copy is well... used. But that's all good. What I intend to do with my kids is get out some blank sheets of paper and have them act out the activities on their blank (and much larger) canvasses to still enjoy the intended outcome of this book.

While I do like this idea and it is done decently enough, this is certainly a 'Low-Content Book.'

A low-content book has minimal or no content on the interior pages. Low-content books are generally repetitive, and designed to be filled in by the user.

Something like this could easily be whipped up in a very short period of time (days/1-week) and then boom - massed produced and off to the races with maximum Return on (time) Investment. Pretty much any sale is a huge win, because so little effort was put forth. Nothing against Jeffrey Brown at all, I love his books, but this is the fair and impartial truth. Especially with so much reused content within this from his previous books... I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was a complete project from start to finish in a single week.

Regardless of all, after reading through each page/activity, I am looking forward to going through this with my kids soon and seeing how it goes!

This is where I wrote my fanfics about what happened to the characters after the series ended. I wish I could have written more in here, then I could go through it later. There were some interesting writing and drawing prompts here.

Although we've all been anxiously awaiting the next Jedi Academy book, this companion journal is a fun way to fill in the time. There are jokes, puzzles, story starters, pages to draw (even a lesson on how to draw an Ewok), comics to fill in the dialogue, places to write your own stories and comics, etc. All the characters from the Jedi Academy books appear on the pages of the journal. Sometimes Roan is explaining the activity, or Master Yoda is encouraging you to "Do or do not. There is no try." At other times, Ronald is telling jokes like, "Why did the Jedi cross the road? To go to the Dark Side." Short scenes from the books are used to illustrate the pages and inspire your creativity. Fans of the series will enjoy this journal and use it to help them wait patiently for Roan and his classmates to return.

I read an e-book provided by the publisher through edelweiss.

This is cute for young kids who want to fill out a theme journal. The book is thick enough to let kids write what they want, but doesn't overwhelm them.
