Crompton's fiction centres around family and social life, dwelling on the constraints that they place on individuals while also nurturing them. This is best seen in her depiction of children as puzzled onlookers of society's ways. Nevertheless, the children, particularly William and his Outlaws, almost always emerge triumphant.

It's impossible not to give any of the William books five stars really. Richmal Crompton hit upon a winning formula and she stuck to it, so her stories never fail to entertain - though after you have read a certain number of books the stories do begin to feel quite repetitive in theme and plot. But that can't be helped. I would rather have too many William stories than too few.
I think I do prefer the earlier titles in the series though (pre-war), when they were definitely set in another era. In this book, published in 1954, Elizabeth was on the throne and William had started to say 'Dad' instead of 'Father'. But still, as I have always said of the earlier titles in the series, they are valuable records of social history, recording not just what contemporary culture was like, but bringing in records of many customs and traditions which were considered old-fashioned even then. And this series of books, written over the course of nearly fifty years, documents some of those changes which took place during an eventful period of history.
These stories make perfect bedtime stories for children. As usual with these books, each chapter stands alone as a complete story in its own right. Thomas Henry's illustrations remain delightful as always.

A entertaining set of William stories, personally I feel the quality is deteriorating a little but they are still entertaining and amusing.
