*This review is mostly for the novel but since the manga was adapted from that, didnt change anything, only removed some of the main character's perverted thoughts & voice and skipped a lot important stuff my review for the both versions stays the same:

This is probably the most influential isekai novel since it is actually considered as ''The God Father of Modern Isekai'' by a lot of people because it popularized the reincarnation sub-genre of isekai while establishing a number of common isekai tropes...THAT I FUCKING HATE MORE THAN ANYTHING... Hence the reason why I just can't bring myself giving it A high praise or a higher rating.

FIRST, LETS TALK ABOUT POSITIVES;

The story revolves around on a 34-year old NEET who meets his death through a speeding truck and then finds himself reborn as Rudeus Greyrat in a world of sword and sorcery. Seeing this as an opportunity to assume his new identity, Rudeus embarkes on a coming-of-age journey which proved to be more satisfying than what he ever experienced in his past life. This is THE isekai, a slow-burn story with literally a lifetime of character development. Protagonist ages through the story and the story follows him from birth to death quite literally and even though it comes way too late, happens not enough amount, there IS character development.

Unlike The Beginning After the End, the MC isn’t overpowered here. Sure, the main character, Rudeus, has all the elemental magic and is a talented mage, but we find Rudeus struggling in more situations than he prevails. Another awesome things is seeing the way Rudeus working for his powers, unlike most isekai heroes. He reads books, practices his spell casting, and works on his sword-fighting technique. It’s not like he was reborn as a god. There are plenty of times he is too weak to win a fight. He's also a imperfect main character; lots of characters here are imperfect actually to the point it kinda makes you hate them, kinda makes them great because a few of them have great redemption arcs.

NOW, HERE COMES THE RANT AND REASONS FOR THE ONE STAR RATING;

The story is one of the ''first'' modern isekai and it shows. It's why it sounds so generic and has a neet/deadbeat MC who is a overtly perverted, every flavor of waifu, sword and magic world etc. Yes, the story is very good, but it's also very overrated. This isn't the end-all-be-all isekai. It's your harem, ecchi, fantasy on medium difficulty. There's a story there. It's pretty good, and the rest is a "how I'd change my life for the better if I could have a do-over" power fantasy. A lot of times it felt like the story seemed to stay too stale for its own good at times, and the author uses shock factor techniques to spike interest. Such as in the later arcs. Although, those were great moments in the overall story, it is easy to see that those things were added mechanically to give drama to the overall plot.

I think that people are hyping this up way too much. I'd maybe put this on par with a lot of other isekai but it's nowhere close to Re: zero. Starting life in another world: 1 -which actually started before this one. It's kinda funny when you think about it, how Re-Zero appeared first yet it feels like a deconstruction of the isekai cliches and a reponse against previously published isekai works, when in actually Re-Zero started before a lot of other isekai and before many of the cliches in the genre fully established and-

...EHM. BACK TO THE POINT....

The story has a lot of unnecessary sexualization, misogynistic comments and content and sometimes the pedophile main character spoils all the enjoyment. If you actually read into the sexual comments that interrupt the story every a few pages (or if you're watching the anime; every two minutes) they aren’t just random. They’re really sexist and offensive. I feel like Mushoku Tensei uses sex and female submission as an allegory for masculinity and power and I fucking hate the way its done. Female characters either fulfill their misogynistic role of being oversexualized and then magically disappear or they stay but downgrade into oversexualized pet rocks who have no other contributions to the overall plot.

For example; we have an emotional moment where our "hero" thanks to his teacher, Roxy, for everything she did for him only to see him next sniffing her panties in the next scene. Or how about when we learn Rudeus's father Rudeus then goes on to say that even though his dad is an asshole, he still thinks he’s pretty cool. Why? Because he’s slept with so many women!

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

He also convinces Then supriiiiseeee suprise The MC himself becomes the same kind of cheating scum later on.

Sure, the said ''cool father'' has a redempation arc that happens later in the story but he was and the main chracter were BOTH still assholes and I HAD TO ENDURE THESE SHIT CHARACTERS A LOT.

Should I give you more examples? Like; not really big spoilers but;

It seems there are a lot of people who say that Mushoku Tensei’s sexual comments are just a part of its “mature themes” because it İs “realistic”.

HAHAHAHAHA.

NO.

There are so many things wrong about this statement.

The story constantly uses sexual comments as jokes and as a way to show respect for men who have slept with other girls and maybe it's cool for you, maybe I'm a girl and this is why I hate this stuff but umm, this is the same thing as a middle schooler braging to everyone about how many girls have given him head, you know that right? Is this how the ''mature content'' supposed to be?

NOT FOR ME.

Overall, even though they had redemptation arcs, male characters are unlikeable as most of them are portrayed as perverts or cheaters and female characters seem to mostly exist for fanservice and to fall for the MC. I also cant take the romance seriously because how weird all the pairings are.

All the stuff I can say about the harem and polygamy here might either make you hate the story or love it. I dont want to fill this review with rapid cursing so I'm gonna stop myself. All I can say is I am just so disappointed with the manga and anime industry for not considering the female fans and viewers in this kind of stories. I know that Anime and manga in japan caters to a male perspective, hence the reason why I've been reading Korean ones instead of manga recently, but is it so fucking hard to write male characters who arent perverted creeps that treat women as sexual objects in these stories? Thats all I'm asking mangakas. Thats all I'm asking.

What is funny to me is how Author of Musho sells his story for specific peeps as he claims is for those who are not sucessful and low on society but then procceds to show one of the worsts kind of MC that exist and gets angry when its story is bashed for it.

Like, what were you expecting buddy?

I cant believe the author itself believes that the bottom-feeders of society are like that (when in truth only a small fraction is like that.

There might be some people thinking this review is just another case of applying modern day morals and standards to a fantasy novel and argue how bad it is but excuse me, I am fine with flawed characters, I just dont like trashy ones.

So. Mushoku Tensei... I had heard about this at a convention panel entitled "Great manga no one reads" (or something to that effect). The description the panelist gave was that this was the story of a "loser who dies and is reborn with all his memories in a magical fantasy land."

That pretty much sums it up, but what I really liked about this series is the fact that the loser actually takes his second chance and runs with it. He decides he won't be a loser any more and puts a lot of effort into living life. At the age of 3. I love that he learned his lesson and isn't going to "waste his life" this time. He doesn't whine about losing all the modern day conveniences. He doesn't mourn his old life. He wants to be what he couldn't be in his previous life.

The other thing that I enjoyed is the characters. Everyone is pretty well-defined and generally likable. Even "Rudy," when he's being anything but cute, is still likable and you just kind of accept it as a character weakness or odd quirk. I found myself cracking up a lot at the antics of Rudy, our 34-year-old in a 5-year-old body because he was just so dang good at pretending to be a totally innocent little kid.

My only really complaint is, strangely enough, the back cover. On the back is a picture of a character named Sylph with butt cheeks highlighted for the world. This character is also seven. It's kind of creepy. This doesn't happen in the first volume itself, so I'm a bit perplexed by why it's on the back...

While I think this series is fairly accessible for the average anime fan (possibly newbies who like fantasy a lot), I will advise readers to actually pay attention to the rating on the back this time around. This is definitely a manga for ages 13 and up.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After watching the anime I decided to read the manga and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Will say I like the anime better simply because I feel the animation is cuter.

This is an isakai manga, so if you don't like those stop now. I love this Manga. The MC is a weeb/neet (no really) who dies a pitiful death doing something completely outside of the norm for himself and is given a second chance at life in another world with all of his memories from his previous life. The MC tries to overcome himself and this new world while still clinging to some of his old ways. It is a bit ecchi, but even with all the fan service it doesn't lose it's plot. The pacing is well done and the series is a must read for isakai lovers!

Consider this a review for the lightnovel not٨ the manga.
While i am quitting this after volume2 (i am just done with isekai)
But for an isekai its one of the best. The main charecter growth is noticable and one of the main points of the series.
However he is a bit of pervert and a groomer.
But the cast od good so far and its clear that there is a lot of world building coming

If you are interested in an isekai this one of the best.
Burn the manga it skipped too much.

Isekai Redemption

Just in case anyone plans on starting this series through Kindle as I did I wanted to point out sometimes the folks at Amazon have been known to remove books from the Kindle stores if someone complains about it. I haven't had a problem recently so I forgot to check this time but this series is missing volume 6 so if you are a completionism you should either go with the physical books or through another e-book service provider.

Mushoku Tensei is rated Teen but I wonder if it just barely squeaked in due to certain amount of perversion that shows up in the book. Then again I didn't make the manga age range rules so just be aware that this book although fun also has references to panties, baby making, an excited lolita looking demon mage, youthful stripping (though you don't see anything), and more things you might not want a younger reader to pickup unless they are mature enough to handle such things.

When 34 year old Neet is cast into the world after the passing of his parents and with no help from his siblings in sight he his aware his life has is a burden on everyone else and wishes he could get a new chance at life so decides to turn over a new leaf. However he notices a truck barreling toward some younger people and in a moment of noble sacrifice takes their places dying in the process.

However fate is a fickle mistress as the man finds himself reborn as an infant in a land where magic is real and swordsmanship is an excellent job skill to possess. Now young Rudeus Greyrat (who still has all of his memories from his old life) has a chance to make himself a better person and experience new joys and hardships as we see him grow years at a time and meet all sorts of interesting people. You should pick up this title and see how a 34 year old man can improve his life in a world unlike his old one. :)

Continuing along my Isekai manga binge i found Jobless Reincarnation, with in the first chapter my interest was peaked. I have read quite a few Isekai manga as of now and what i always like to read is something unique and i found this inside the first few panels.

The whole "NEET suddenly whisked into a fantasy world" isn't new by any means but the way they get injected is always interesting to see, This series an ugly, out of shape NEET get thrown out by his family due to his NEET ways to be hit by tragedy ending in the miraculous rebirth in a new magical world keeping his old memories as he slowly grows up watching him decide to not be lazy and pathetic like he was in his previous life, having no more regrets.

Any lovers of Isekai manga be sure to give this series a go.

One of the few of isekai book that I really like. Although I agree with some points people make, about the ridiculous and bad parts of the book, I still respect the understandable background of the protagonist. They rarely gave readers about it in other isekai works. The slice of life part wasn't boring at all. The author didn't try that hard for the world building, but he knew what he wanted to make, so he focused more on the message and moral lesson (although again, it's kinda ruined whenever the fanservice part came). The writing itself isn't that special, but surely it touched me when it should.

I kind of liked this up until the point . Ugh, why did that one part have to happen? Everything else was fun and the other pervy-ness didn't bother me.

This is more a 2 1/2 stars - I feel like it must make a better light novel than manga. It also feels like it's about to take off, so I'll definitely be giving it a second volume before I really decide.

A longer review (or rather, a real one) will eventually appear on ANN.

I gave it two stars because the artwork was good and it started out decently.

There were some cute things about this manga, but ultimately I couldnt get past a few points that bugged me. Everyone has their own judgment and threshold of tolerance, so I expect a lot of other people would like the isekai adventure plot and be able to overlook the parts I found questionable.

My main complaint is…Rudy was a NEET for good reason. He didn’t appear (at least in volume1) to have any redeeming qualities. In his final act, he does save a bunch of teens, then awakens in the new world as a baby. He’s a cute, talented kid, determined to work hard, overcome his past failures, and excel at magic and swordsmanship. The thing is…deep down he’s still the 34yo NEET, and he’s a bit gross about it. On the one hand it is more realistic than some of the isekai where the protagonist is acting like a child even though their spirit should be an adult, BUT I also don’t want to read about a 3 year old having gross middle aged ecchi thoughts about women. There’s a level of realism I really don’t want. It sort of casually tosses in things like him imagining elves as being scantily clad women being molested by tentacles, and even being upset with his dad for interrupting his snuggle time with his mom. For no reason, there’s also a page where he’s snickering about his parents having sex, and sees his magic tutor, Roxy, peeking in on them and obviously aroused. WHY. It’s never mentioned again, but he does steal her panties at some point in the next 2 years (yes, before he’s 5) 🤦🏻‍♀️

He makes a new friend that is probably part demon, considering her hair color, and once he discovers Sylphie is a girl, there’s some fan service and ecchi overtones there as well (they’re…7 at this point?). Rudy, who was very advanced in magic previously, makes zero progress in those 2 years, which isn’t explained either. Did he stop working hard??

There’s a bit with his father Paul where he gets unreasonably angry and scolds, then hits Rudy. Rudy responds by scolding back, remembering his past life and talking about how he’ll leave the family when he’s of age because he’s too ashamed to have relatives like this. I think it’s supposed to be kind of a teaching moment and kind of touching, but it comes out of nowhere and is completely out of character for his father, so it just irritated me. To cap off the incredibly poor impression of his father, you find that his mom is pregnant, and…so is the maid. Both by his father. Instead of having his family break up (his mom is super mad obviously), Rudy employs big eyes and asks why they can’t be a happy family, lies and says he heard his dad coercing the maid into sex, and his mom says ok, and it all blows over. WHAT. There is NO consequence (not even an argument) for Paul, even after Rudy confesses he lied about the coercing. TBH, she should be MORE angry if her husband was blackmailing their loyal employee into sex, but I guess it’s all fine now because he gets two sisters and they’re all living together still. It never addresses whether the father continues the relationship with the maid, but I don’t see why he wouldn’t. Honestly, that was the last straw for me. Not only did it feel random and unrealistic for the story, even if it WERE realistic, I still wouldn’t want to read about a couple where someone cheated and they just carried on without any issue. And Rudy, with the soul of an adult, understands full well what a scumbag his dad is, but still manipulated the mom so his family stays together (and to repay the maid for not tattling about the stolen panties she found in his room). There’s just such a distasteful feel to it…

I finished off the volume, but that spoiled any good feelings I retained towards the series. It also ended on a cliffhanger that suggests that Paul does something else that’s asshole-ish to separate Rudy and Sylphie.

I really wanted to give this a higher rating because the artwork is nice and the story seemed promising albeit a tad generic perhaps.

So where did it go wrong?
Well I have read a few questionable even icky fanservice manga volumes this year and normally I'm quite good at putting it aside for the story as long as the story is catching my interest and I think it's good/enjoyanble - even if I'm seriously tired of the fanservice and questionable choices.

Note I have only read volume 1, normally I read at least 3 volumes of a story to make up my mind on it. And normally I can manifacture a poor excuse for some/certain questionable choices/suggetions/hints within a manga if I feel invested in the story. I'm usually pretty lenient or perhaps too lenient with these kind of things in books/manga.
Some I have read might even come close to the issue with this one, but the difference is the way it was done, the amount of times it appeared and so on. This one is just weird/awkward and creepy almost from the start. Having MC having retained his memories and clearly having the mind of a mid 30's grown ass man, who has the hots for small girls just end up screaming pedophilia by the way it has been done in this story and that is just in the first volume. And I'm not even pointing out some of the other things other readers have complained about because those I would have been able to have put aside for the story. At least for 3 volumes to make up my mind on whether this was for me or not.
Also the depiction of Sylph several times.... The girl is 5-7 in the first volume.... and a grown ass man who is born into the body of a 5-7 year old thinks like that of her? When you think about it, technically he was mid 30's at birth and he's now technically 40+ at age seven!
Aside she is drawn like that? If anything he should have ruminated about the dilemma of being a 30-something year old caught in the body of a child before figuring out a positive way to deal with it because obviously the MC should be allowed to live a new life. But all the story does is going the cheap pervy route instead of having a brief moment of thought.
Aside from the fanservice and borderline pedophilia icks this gives you, the story is also very hypocritical/double standarded at places. I'll avoid spoilers but read the other lower to mid star reviews and you'll get the idea pretty quickly. This had promise, this could have had tasteful icky or morally grey characthers but that's not the impression I unfortunately ended up with after finishing volume 1. And it's not the impression other reviews have given me if I were to continue the series. So I'm sad I don't get to exploit my library access to this one, but I have other questionable manga series I rather continue because their plot and storyline seem far more interesting to me personally.

The TLDR: A fanfic/story for the creep in the basement.

"Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Manga) Vol. 1" by Rifujin na Magonote is a manga adaptation of the popular light novel series that has gained a dedicated following. This first volume offers readers a glimpse into the story's world and characters, but it's important to consider it in the context of the source material and the expectations set by its reputation.

The story introduces us to Rudeus Greyrat, a protagonist who is reborn into a fantasy world with his memories intact. This premise is not unique, but what sets "Mushoku Tensei" apart is its meticulous attention to character development and world-building. The manga captures the essence of the light novel series, presenting a well-crafted and immersive fantasy world.

The characters are a standout element of this series. Rudeus undergoes significant growth throughout the story, and his transformation is a central focus. Supporting characters are equally well-developed, and their interactions add depth to the narrative. This character-driven approach provides readers with relatable and multifaceted individuals.

The plot, while in its early stages in this volume, offers a promising and intricate narrative. It blends elements of adventure, magic, and coming-of-age, and as the story unfolds, readers can expect a captivating and often thought-provoking journey. The pacing is well-handled, making it easy for both fans of the source material and newcomers to engage with the story.

The artwork in this manga adaptation complements the narrative effectively. It captures the nuances of the characters and the fantastical elements of the world. While the artwork may not be groundbreaking, it serves its purpose in enhancing the storytelling.

Compared to its contemporaries in the world of manga adaptations, "Mushoku Tensei" distinguishes itself with its intricate character development and world-building. It offers a more mature and character-driven experience, which may particularly resonate with readers seeking a deeper narrative in a fantasy setting.

In conclusion, "Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Manga) Vol. 1" successfully captures the essence of the beloved light novel series. It introduces readers to a well-constructed fantasy world with compelling characters and promising plotlines. For fans of the source material and those new to the story, this manga adaptation is a worthy entry point into the "Mushoku Tensei" universe, offering an engaging and immersive experience.

Full disclosure, I just got caught up on all the anime of this and loved it so much that I decided to drop all that I was doing to read the manga and likely go back and read the original Light novels as well. Ostensibly, it's about getting further in the story, but honestly, I just love how much of a parable of depression and healing it is.

Sure, this broken recluse dies in our world and gets reincarnated in this fantasy land, growing up from birth to a young adult while still retaining all his memories of his past life, but it is a lot more than just that.

I'm honestly rather surprised at how real, in the sense of really great literature, it really is.

As for this particular volume, it's more goofy than anything else, slightly depressing for the backstory, and Rudy is just a golden-child lech. But honestly? No character should be without faults. The honesty in this, the growth of Rudy as a person, despite backsliding, is quite something to behold.

I can't wait to get further!

I'm sad that an otherwise great story was spoiled by an MC who is such a relentless creep. The general tone of the comic was already a bit distasteful, but I pushed through the overdone sexualisation and sexism because it's realistic that a reincarnated troglodyte would have some misogynistic attitudes; I was expecting a redemption arc or a satisfying second chance where the former basement dweller learns how wrong he was and goes on to have an interesting life in his new fantasy world. There was even some good humanisation done about the way the bullying in his past life affected him and turned him into said troglodyte. But ogling people's boobs and stealing their panties is one thing- assaulting them in their sleep is another, and that was it for me. And that's not even touching on the disturbing 'does him being a grown man in the body of a child make this paedophilia??' element.

2 stars only because it had the potential to be so much better.

This is a wonderful series of novel, the author did a fantastic job illustrating the life of the main character throughout his life. His personality changes as he grows up and meets new people, though he has been through many trouble, the main character Rudeus overcomes the trouble and continues on his adventure in the new world. With new characters in each stage of Rudeus' life, he learns and grows which is why I couldn't stop reading this book, I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in fantasy fiction because this book is unique and is definitely not something similar to other books.

Another isekai and unfortunately this is very generic, the guy is a loser who's sponged off people his whole life. So when he dies and is reborn, he decides he's going to work hard to learn magic. Of course he's incredibly talented, as per most isekai's. This time he knows water magic, he gets a tutor and they bond but of course he soon becomes too skilled for her.

I liked the fact that he made a friend, it was the only thing that set this thing apart from everything else I've read. It was quite wholesome and he was just bonding with another guy, of course that isn't straight forward but I enjoyed the layer that it could add. Even though I thought this was just ok, I will be picking up the next volume just so see if it's worth continuing.

This may be my favorite reincarnation story.

Rudy is just so cheeky and you can tell he's really trying to use his new life as a way to be a better person than he was in his previous life.

I love too that he's not thrust into some perfect family in a perfect world. There are prejudices he encounters and hardships he must face. His mother and father aren't perfect people and his relationship with them adds another layer to the story.

I will definitely be reading all the other volumes in the series and I highly recommend this series.

Actual rating: 4.5

This was really good! I love the concept of dying and coming back into another world while still remembering everything from your past life. Really like the characters so far but I do have take .5 points off for two things.
1- the acceptance of a cheating husband. Fuck that.
2- the over sexualization of a child. I get why but no thanks. Let's hope they don't make anymore scenes and leave it at those two scenes.

This manga is really interesting to be honest. I started the light novel and went straight to the manga after seeing the character designs. The story is so funny and it makes you want to read more as you see where Rudy leads his new life and if he can go all the way with his studies and maybe having a wife in the end of this life. I haven't gotten far in the story but I can't wait to see whats next!

Maybe should finish the light novels too LOL
