One of These Nights

Rate this book
From the author of Every Little Kiss, a heartwarming novel that proves sometimes the only way to let people in is to let go...

Moving to Harvest Cove has been like a dream come true for Zoe Watson, providing her with a job she loves and close friends she considers practically family. The only problem: a certain prickly—albeit handsome—park ranger who can’t seem to help tracking mud into her art gallery…or showing up in her dreams.

Jason Evans swore off relationships the day his ex-wife walked out the door, and the local gallery owner is no exception. But when an accident forces him to accept the one thing he hates most in the world—help—he discovers that with Zoe in his life, there are more highs than lows. Despite their long-simmering attraction, neither Jason nor Zoe thinks that two people with so little in common could possibly have a future together. But one of these nights, they may just discover how alike they are.…

Not as good as the second, not as bad as the first. An enjoyable read that was nearly ruined by Jason's family.

So here's the thing: it isn't the bad people in your past, or even in your life, but how you react to their machinations that has implications on your character. This is important for Jason because he really should have rocked my boat. A quiet nerd who stubbornly does what he thinks is right who can banter without bite when given half a chance. That should be my jam. Only Jason's family undermines a lot of what I might have admired. Not because they're awful (they really are) but because Jason turns into a complete pushover in the face of their machinations. I'm sorry, but if I knew my mother only wanted to barge into my life for her own self-aggrandizement and that she'd belittle me in front of my friends and lover, the last thing I'd do is let her stay in my home and push me around. That's just weak and it made me lose respect for Jason where he should have been strongest—i.e. his steadfast and quiet strength was not only turned on himself, but on Zoe as a byproduct. And I find that a total turnoff.

At least Zoe was full of win. I loved her straightforward approach in everything. She could be subtle (her handling of the meddlingly awful Molly proved that) but she did what she had to do and made no bones about it. I particularly liked how classily she handled the messes Jason landed her in. Straight up confrontation, but without acrimony or ultimatums or tantrums (to which she would totally have been entitled, I thought). She said what she thought and let him know as forthrightly and kindly as she could. It was awesome. She saved this book for me, by and large.

So Zoe alone kept this a steady 3.5 stars, but Jason's family damage keeps me from rounding up.

A note about Steamy: Middle road with a typical two explicit sex scenes. I really liked how well Castle handled them, actually. They were exactly what they needed to be, illustrating both the quirks of the characters and the state of their relationship. That said, I admit to being a bit disturbed/perturbed by the lack of birth control. I've come to expect that in a modern sexual romance and the absence of any discussion or on-screen mention was a little disconcerting.

When I first read the glimpse of irritating slash intriguing arguments between Zoe Watson, the fiery gallery owner, and Jason Evans, the handsome park ranger (whom Zoe secretly called Treebeard behind his back) in book #1, I was already looking forward to their book. I thought Zoe and Jason had that “opposite attracts” factor down to a T. I couldn’t wait to read how they finally acknowledged their attraction. So when I was offered the ARC for this via The Blogger Girls blog, I couldn’t say “YES” fast enough. I immediately started reading it once it was delivered to my email.

Well, for the most part, I definitely got my wishes. I mean, look at the set-up!

Jason is forced into limited mobility after he broke his leg when trying to rescue a dog in the wood while avoiding trees coming down on him at the same time. He is out of commission, has to wear crutches, and ask for help every now and then. However, Jason’s biggest problem is coming his way … his mother.

Jason doesn’t have a good relationship with his family, especially his mother and his younger brother. He was always considered the less perfect one and having his mother over will smother him and drive him crazy. So when Zoe comes to visit at the ‘wrong’ time (Jason is on the phone with his mother), he ends up admitting a lie that surprises both of them. Jason tells his mother that Zoe is his girlfriend … in order to stop his mother from coming over.

Isn’t that perfect? Yep, fake girlfriend scenario (haha)

I really LOVED Zoe and Jason together … I loved that they finally, due to the circumstances, were able to learn about one another since they had to keep a united front in front of Jason’s mother. Zoe and Jason have been acquainted for the past two years and perform their ‘mating dance’ but there are still a lot of things they don’t know about each other. Add the adorable dog, Rosie, that Jason adopted, and I simply loved every single moment when they were together.

However, at the same time, that particular circumstance, a.k.a. Jason’s mother, became my biggest issue with this book. Molly Evans (Jason’s mother) is very overbearing – and we also have Jason dealing with his pompous younger brother later in the book – and every scene with her made my blood pressure rise. I could understand the need of having Molly as the antagonist character here. Reading the interactions between Jason and Molly is an effective way in showing how the scars run deep in Jason. We could understand why Jason became so hard-headed, why he built this wall around his heart.

Molly (and to an extent, his ex-wife, Sara) does a great number on Jason as a person, which as a result, makes it hard for Jason to see that Zoe is not at all like his mother or his ex-wife. Yes, Zoe is classy; she likes her tea, her arts, and she owns a gallery. However, Zoe is also quite down-to-earth. She loves Harvest Cove; she chooses to stay in this small-town. Yes, she brushes shoulder with gallery patrons, but Zoe can also enjoy a simple picnic. Zoe is nowhere similar to Molly or Sara and she doesn’t need all the things that Jason perceived being needed (or liked) by ‘the snobby people’.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that all the scenes with Molly took the time that could be spent for Jason and Zoe. And this frustrated me — because Molly frustrated Jason and it became a chain-like event. There was nothing good when reading about Molly and her inability to see Jason for his worth. So I wish there were MORE scenes of Jason and Zoe’s goodness. Even in the end, I expected more pages or an epilogue of some kind. Family drama is fine, but I don’t like it if it takes over the spotlight from the main couple’s romance, you know? That was the biggest obstacle for this book to be one of my perfect romance reads of the year, sadly. :(

Despite everything, One of These Nights reaffirms for me that Kendra Leigh Castle is an author to watch out for when it comes to small-town contemporary romance. I am so bloody happy that we already have book #4 looming on the horizon (though not until March 2016). Because that means I’m not done with the Harvest Cove residents and I have something to look forward to next year.

This one was laden with issues for me. First of all the hero had the WORST family and mother ever who was a self-obsessed narcissist. Also I get grumpy heroes but this one was the worst and I didn't think at the end h/H worked at all. It just seemed like the heroine was constantly pushing him to open up begging for crumbs. Our heroine moved to town a couple of years ago and runs her own art gallery. The hero has been coming and buying from her and generally annoying her for years. But when he takes a tumble and heroine goes to see him to be nice, she finds herself finagled into fake dating him coz his mother is coming to town. The book was full of holes, we know the hero is divorced but we never get the full story on that though we do get the obligatory ex and her new husband run-in at the end. The hero just never communicated and honestly I felt the heroine deserved much better.

This utterly delightful tale of small-town romance woes delivers a sweet tale of sophisticated woman and nature survivalist man bumbling into love. Looking forward to reading the other tiles in this Harvest Cove series.

Zoe Watson is the town’s gallery owner, and Jason Evans is the town’s Park Ranger. Getting along is not always their strongest suit. They are quite the opposite yet their secret attraction for each other couldn’t be helped. Zoe is friendly and out-going, Jason is not. He is a brood with reasons to back it up with. He is an unhappy divorcee and has mommy issues, to say the least. Unfortunately, his recent accident with lighting and a cute dog kicked start a visit from his overbearing mother. Attempting to get out of that mess, he uses Zoe as an excuse to shoo his mom away. Thier perfect fake relationship did nothing in mom-repelling but mostly did more good to their developing friendship. It was well overdue.

I expected this book to be plenty sweet and fun, and Ms. Castle was good on that. The ending was sweet indeed. But I’m going to be honest and tell you that I was a bit disappointed with the hero. His situation with his mother annoyed me to no end. I feel like, despite his strong, independent, carefree persona, he let his mom and brother step all over him. Thank goodness for Zoe, who is a very strong independent lady who will not take sh*t from anyone. Because of her, Jason will finally stand up for himself.

There was also a change of pace towards the end of the book and when it picked up, it went straight to insta-love. I feel like Jason jumped the gun on his decision at the end. They barely knew each other to make such a decision. It was too fast for my liking. I wanted to like this book as much as I liked the first installment. After meeting him from the previous books, I had certain expectations , unfortunately, he fell a little short.

I haven't read the other books in the Harvest Cove series yet, so I didn't have a preconceived notion of Jason and Zoe when I got in to One of These Nights. I do love fake girlfriend/boyfriend/fiancé trope, so I was excited to read this one. Add to that this this is a hate-to-love story, and I was pretty much hooked.

Park ranger Jason recently broke his leg and needs help getting around and doing some things. When his mother says she's going to come take care of him, Jason says he has a girlfriend: sassy Zoe, owner of the town art studio. Jason doesn't want a real relationship since his ex-wife broke his heart, and Zoe is very antagonizing.

I hated Jason's mom, Molly, and felt like it was unrealistic for Jason to allow her to be so overbearing. I say that knowing that even though I'm old now, I still do whatever my mom tells me to do. So maybe it wasn't so unrealistic after all *cries*

Jason and Zoe really push each other's buttons, but of course you know it isn't long before they figure out how they really feel. I had a bit of trouble buying in to the authenticity of their feelings--they seriously argue all the time! I wonder if they hadn't been "forced" into the situation if they'd have actually ended up together. Put aside their arguing, and they do have good chemistry. I did like the other characters, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

One of These Nights has a great small-town feel and is perfect for fans of Jill Shalvis and Shannon Stacey. I could totally see Jason hanging out with Jax and the guys from Lucky Harbor. If you enjoy a sassy heroine and great banter, I think you'll like this story.

Kendra Leigh Castle's Harvest Cove series just keeps getting better! In One of These Nights, I was immersed in the lives of Zoe and Jason. I had a great time there! I really loved these two unique, intriguing, and very likable characters. They think they have nothing in common, but opposites do attract! They've had an interesting 'relationship' for the last two years, and suddenly it is evolving into more than either of them imagined. The attraction that has simmered hidden under the surface is soon reaching boiling point. I liked what Kendra did to get them there - it was an emotional and at times entertaining journey. But with past issues unresolved and family dynamics, can it last?

I loved Zoe and Jason. Zoe is strong, and is making a good life for herself in Harvest Cove, the place she now calls home. I liked her honest, quirky personality. She felt like someone I could easily be friends with! Jason really pulled at my heart without even trying, and watching his character grow and become stronger felt great. Watching Zoe and Jason come together and acknowledge their feelings was even better. It is a rocky road for them though, and the bumps might prove too much. One of These Nights is a book that really made me feel for the characters. They are ones I'll remember!

There are a host of fantastic secondary characters in One of These Nights, some of them you want to hug, others not so much! They all bring so much to the plot and really help with the growth of the story. I liked seeing characters from previous books in this series, but they are written in in such a way that One of These Nights can easily be read as a stand alone.

One of These Nights pulled me right in from start to finish! The writing is smooth, the plot flows fantastic, and the characters are true to life. I'd recommend One of These Nights to any romance reader!

This novel was so heartwarming Zoe Watson has moved to Harvest Cove to open an art studio featuring local artists. She is a stubborn, head-strong woman. Jason Evans -a park ranger with a prickly attitude has moved back to Harvest Cove to escape his past (recently divorced and feeling like he does not measure up) and his over-bearing mother. His mother is always comparing him to his younger brother who could do no wrong. Jason becomes a regular visitor – buyer at Zoe's studio and has a habit of ruffling her feathers – he tracks in dirt so she buys a mat/carpet just for him so he will wipe the dirt on the carpet but Jason being Jason avoids the mat and still makes a mess of her studio floor. They have become friendly with each other and then one day Jason is hurt on the job and needs some help getting around his home. His mother gets wind of his accident and tells Jason she is on her way to take care of him. Jason does not want his mother visiting nor does he want her help so he comes up with a plan that if his mother sees he has a girlfriend who is taking care of him she will return home after a day or two. So he hopes to accomplish this by having Zoe be his fake girlfriend and this is when the fun begins. Loved this book wish it had a bit more covering Jason and Zoe life after they acknowledged their attraction for each other.

This series slowly grew on me. The first book was a three star read, but I felt there was potential. The second book, Emmas story was even better, a four star read, but this book was all it took for me. I read it in a heartbeat. The love was bursting from every page and it earned five great stars!! This is definitly a reread book for me! Zoe an Jason were fantastic.

I really love this book series...

It's looks like that Jason and his family are not getting along because of few issues along with his mom and his brother Tommy. He got his grandparents on his mom's side, his Aunt Moira and his cousin Jake.

Zoe and Jason seems getting along great but they had a different interests and things.

Glad they are getting married but can't wait for next series of that both characters is Zoe and Jason.

This is the third book in a delightful series; I have enjoyed getting to know this small community with transplants and locals forming a cohesive group of intriguing characters. This is Jason and Zoe’s story, a relationship that has been building since the beginning when we would see these two collide in her art gallery and it is well worth the wait.

Jason Evans is a Park Ranger who has lived in Harvest Cove for most of life. He was married at one time but now lives quietly outside of town and he is a bit of a loner. His family lives in another state and that works well for him as his mother is overbearing and he is not close with his younger brother. When he breaks his leg while saving a small dog he pays the ultimate price, his mother wants to come and help, so he quickly enlists Zoe, and even though they are both puzzled as to why he choose her, they work together with a common goal.

Zoe Watson moved from Georgia three years ago to open an art gallery. She loves this town and has met many good friends. Jason frequently comes into her gallery and brings the wilderness inside with him; she even buys him a mat so he can wipe his feet and calls him Treebeard, and they have teased and taunted each other since the beginning. When he ropes her in to help with his mother, she reluctantly agrees but they find that their teasing masked some deep feelings toward each other.

This series has me hooked; I enjoy the setting and the people that inhabit this quaint small town. They have all found a place where they can be themselves with friends that are fun and engaging.

Zoe is a doll; she has found her place and loves living in Harvest Cove where she fits in. Her shop caters to locals and often is a champion for them when tourists are looking for unique and beautiful pieces of art. The relationship between Zoe and Jason started when she first opened her shop, he would stop in to look, sometimes to buy but always to pester, they are like little kids as they banter back and forth. He is grumpy and grumbles and she pushes him until they both erupt. I have been watching them since the beginning and was happy with the way the author worked her magic with these two.

I liked Jason in the previous books but after we find out about his history I absolutely adore him. No wonder he is so gruff and standoffish, his family really did a number on him. They never gave him any encouragement and his mother constantly created competition between them, ugh.

Jason and Zoe were so much fun, they would tease and taunt each other, making hilarious comments about how they interact when he comes into her gallery, but underlying is a growing friendship and more as the chemistry works its magic and the scenes heat up. Finding out they enjoyed each other’s company is surprising for both. And when they team up to thwart his mother they realize their feelings are not to be denied.

His mother is awful; she is manipulative, competitive, pretending she is here to help but only causes problems. There are times in a book when a character will start out horrible, do mean things but by the end they will redeem themselves, realize what they are missing when they treat a main character a certain way, but not this woman, she left town in a huff and the relationship between mother and son remained as strained as always, kind of left things unanswered for me, but maybe I should not look for happy ending for all characters, hmmm? Other characters played large roles, fun people we have met before in previous books shared page time and it is good to see how their lives have grown. That being said, you can easily read this as a standalone as the author keeps the reader in the loop.

The pace works well and there are many humorous scenes as the two build on their acquaintance from friendship to love. I thoroughly enjoyed returning to Harvest Cove and look forward to reading more set in this small town.

One of These Nights by Kendra Leigh Castle is the 3rd book in her Harvest Cove series. Zoe Watson is our heroine, having moved to Harvest Cove to be near her friend Sam (previous book heroine) and they now run a successful art gallery.

Jason Evans, our hero, is a park ranger and constant visitor to the gallery. Jason and Zoe do not get along. He has an attitude and annoys her every time he comes to the gallery, which always ends in arguments. She is stubborn, tough, and will not put up with him. But things are about to change. Jason during a storm, rescues a mutt, and breaks his leg; but he does adopt the mutt, who he names Rosie. When Sam tells Zoe she should bring a gift to Jason, since he is a good customer.

Before she gets there, Jason receives a call from his mom that she will come to visit him and help take care of him. Jason dreads this, as his mom is one of those pushy, bossy and not very well liked mothers. He is desperate, right at the point when Zoe arrives with her gift, and tells his mom that she doesn’t need to come, since his girlfriend “Zoe” is taking care of him. His mother says she is coming anyway, and poor Zoe is shocked, but agrees to become his fake girlfriend to help Jason keep his mothers visit short.

What follows is a battle of two people who think they hate each other, and slowly find themselves enjoying the ruse. Zoe becomes protective of Jason, especially to his mother, who is a piece of work. Jason begins to see Zoe in a different light. It is a slow build romance, as the arguments do continue for a bit, but we watch as they slowly succumb to their true feelings.

Jason does have issues of committing due to a failed marriage, and his fears hold him back. Will Zoe be able to win Jason over totally? Though he knows he is falling in love with Zoe, will Jason put his past behind him?

This was a fun story of a romance that had its hardships, especially with two stubborn people. Zoe and Jason were a difficult couple that in time we found ourselves rooting hard for them. It was also a heartwarming story, and always great to see the other characters we have come to know. Harvest Cove is a fun romantic storyline and One of These Nights continues this trend. I suggest to you read this series.

My Review:
One of These Nights didn't turn out to be one of my favorites but it was still a cute story. Although Jason didn't turn out to be the same person I expected him to be from previous moments with him, I felt sorry for him because I could understand why he was the way he was in this installment. His mother ... holy lord his mother... is exactly like someone I know - only not quite as worse as she is, so I can totally get how that kind of thing can cause a lot of damage to a persons sense of self.
I liked Zoe, I thought she was a really sweet person and I enjoyed her sort of care taker/ friend/ partner in crime as they went about the whole relationship sham.
Although we have a tad bit of interaction to build on its not really enough to qualify a serious relationship but we have to have a happy ending because its romance, otherwise I'd totally call it as a fling thing that wouldn't last six months if it were in the real world.
The over all book dragged out a bit but it was a nice slow enjoyable read. Not quite a five star book but still good.

One of These Nights, Harvest Cove #3, by Kendra Leigh Castle
Grade: B-

Zoe Watson might have grown up a Georgia peach but she knows she made the right decision to move to Harvest Cove and open her art gallery. Everything is going great for her except her love life and the fact that the only man to turn her heard in years makes it his life's goal to drive her crazy. Jason Evans is the one man Zoe loves to hate and when he gets in a bind and asks for help she just can’t seem to say no. Now spending actual time with him Zoe sees that all of her hate was just one big crush that she can’t seem to get out of her head.

Jason Evans has sworn off relationships but that doesn’t mean he can’t look especially at the sexy art gallery owner Zoe Watson. Zoe is pure class and way out of Jason’s league but when she agrees to pretend to be his girlfriend to help him with his family he’s shocked. Jason is surprised at how much he enjoys spending time with Zoe which leads to him being unable to keep his hands off of her. As much as Jason likes Zoe he’s still battling demons from his past that could destroy their relationship for good.

I’ve been a big fan of the Zoe and Jason relationship since book one and he started stomping the forest into her gallery so I was very happy to finally get their story. I really enjoyed Zoe a lot more than I expected and she put up with a lot more from both Jason and his mother than I would have guessed. I liked Jason but I found myself really disappointed in him and he definitely didn’t live up to the expectations I had of him. He was so moody and could shut down very quickly even if Zoe tried to get him to explain things to her. I found myself really disliking him towards the end and sadly wanted Zoe to tell him to go away for good.

I did still like this book and besides Jason having some stupid moments it was really fun. Zoe makes the book great and worth reading all by herself. I am VERY excited for the next book with Larkin and Shane and cannot wait to read about them!

Oh, yes I did! I read One of These Nights right after I finished book 2 of this series! It’s like watching Hallmark movies all day long. Castle’s stories are addicting. How I wish to be one of these characters. I really want to move to Harvest Cove and find my one true love.

Not only is One of These Nights heartwarming but this story in particular has a sense of humor that had me laughing here and there. The ever so stubborn Zoe Watson has moved to Harvest Cove to open an art studio. Things are going well for her. She loves her job and being close to her friends is a dream come true. Until he walks in…

Jason Evans is a man who gave his heart away only for it to be returned. Divorced and with a new set of mind, Jason doesn’t want to be bother with love. He tried it once and it was enough. Now he is back to his hometown, Harvest Cove, to escape his past. But the ever “annoying” Zoe owns one of his favorite spots. To make her life miserable, he will do his best to antagonize every single time he visit her art studio. Little does he know, Zoe will change his life forever.

Zoe and Jason relations is not a walk in the park. From the moment these two meet, they’re at each other's throats… I was engaged in their banter! They’re too funny! But you know the saying, “there's a thin line between love and hate.” Pretty soon, these two will learn they are meant to be together.

I’m totally taken by Castle’s stories. They are worth the read! Trust me, when you read The Harvest Cove series, you will enjoy her wonderful stories. Now to wait for Come On Closer... - Leydy

Jason and Zoe have been on each other's bad side from the first time he walked into her art gallery and brought in all his dirt and debris form his shoes. They have bickered with one another and I knew that eventually they would get together and have their own story. I just didn't know how hard it was for them to get it together. Jason is just one of those characters that has so many layers and will only reveal what he wants to reveal in his own time. Zoe is quite the opposite and is very expressive and tells it like it is. Pretending to be his girlfriend in order to get his mother to back off really didn't work and probably made it worse. Some things aren't ever going to fixed and his family is one of those things that seems that way.
I like Jason. I've seen his type out in the world and it is true what they say about still waters run deep. There is some good there just waiting to be accepted and Zoe is willing to find it in Jason. Not the easiest story to read but I understand them better.

I have been waiting for this book ever since the beginning of the series! I loved Zoe and Jason antagonistic banter and I hope that they'd get together. And then they did in this book. But I gotta tell you, their story was a battle, literally.

Zoe and Jason were at each other's throats through the whole book. Even during their less hostile moments, I was always on guard waiting for the other shoe to drop. I wanted to love this book so much but the conflict between the couple overshadowed all other parts of the story and I couldn't enjoy the read. I'm very sad about that..

Despite my feelings for this particular story, I would totally recommend the author and her books.

Zoe and Jason have had an antagonistic relationship for years, but she agrees to help him out after he breaks his leg and needs a buffer between him and his mother. I loved the two of them in the first Harvest Cove book, and am so glad I found this one. I love the nerdy Avengers (so totally where Jason got his last name, I'm convinced) and LOTR touches, and I love that it's a mainstream interracial romance, which so rarely show up. I also loved that I was reading along and it suddenly pinged on me that Jason was dealing with anxiety, and then it turned out he'd seen a therapist for it and his family issues, and that was marvelous, too. So great to see. Issues made sense, things didn't get tied up in a bow, conflict made perfect sense and didn't drag out. Loved the characters, love the town, loved the book. Can't wait for more in the series.

zoe was for the most part, very straightforward, which was refreshing. i'm still confused as to why she agreed to help jason out (i mean i know you like him girl, but who wants to go fight your fake boyfriend's crazy mom?), and i wasn't a fan of the ending (you have to make him work for it!). i felt like the book ended without them really solving/talking out anything.

BUT. i cried 3/4 of the way into the novel, in a good way, and that helped save it for me.

I have really come to love this series set in a small New England coastal town. In this one, we get Zoe and Jason's story and they've been teasing us with the possibilities for that last new books. Full review to come.

Loved the first two books in this series, but wasn't sure about the premise of this book.
Sometimes, I like when I am wrong. I loved this book!

Opposites attract love story.
He has baggage and she doesn't take any b.s. = perfection.
Read this book.
