Capitol K-9 Unit: These lawmen solve the toughest cases with the help of their brave canine partners
Although I have been a published author since the mid 1980s, I have been writing women's Christian fiction almost exclusively since 1999.
There is a longer, more detailed bio on my website so there's no need for me to repeat all that here. Right now, I write for all three Love Inspired lines, Romance, Suspense and Historical. I'm delighted to have been included that broadly and besides, it keeps me so busy that I stay out of trouble. Well, mostly.
You'll find me on the LI Historical blog as well as other LI features. If I try to do much more I won't have time to write my books!
Daniella is in witness protection since sending her killer father to prison. Now he's been released and vows revenge on Daniella. K-9 cop Isaac Black and his canine partner, Abby, are there to protect Daniella and to make sure no harm comes to her. A good Capitol K-9 Unit story (book 5 of 6) that advances the continuing series, if a bit routine. The next book in the series should tie up all loose ends.
TBR Challenge Day! My favorite day of book blogging! DETECTING DANGER by Valerie Hansen is one of the Love Inspired Suspense books I acquired in my reader service subscription in 2015. Unfortunately, it didn’t meet my overall expectations, but I’m glad I read it to better understand continuity series.
Why was this book in Dorine’s TBR? I was once told to read what you want to write, so the Love Inspired line was a reading experiment. My own storytelling seems to lean in an inspirational direction. Not necessarily Christian, but uplifting with a positive message. I had always felt like Harlequin would be my eventual home as a writer, so I studied several lines. Along the way, I realized I enjoy reading and reviewing more than writing novels, so here I am with a pile of books, wondering if they suit me as a reader, or not.
Even though I love thrillers, I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with Romantic Suspense. I just can’t wrap my head around how some of the heroines go against what their man advises, AND what seems sensible, just to get themselves into stupid trouble.
I want to love Romantic Suspense. It seems like it would combine edgy with romance, but I struggle finding any that are believable. With a stack of them in my TBR to prove it, I keep trying. I’m about ready to pack them up and give them away to a reader who will appreciate them, as I don’t think I’m that person. If I could just put away my skeptic brain cells, but they come out all cranky every time.
I like the concept of Inspirational Romantic Suspense, but something about them doesn’t feel real. I’m all for fantasy in my reading, if it makes logistical sense to my brain, but I don’t get these at all. Maybe they’re too short to accomplish complicated plots. Maybe they’re trying to be something more than they need to be? I’m not sure. But I have a stack of them, so I haven’t given up completely, yet.
DETECTING DANGER is part of the Capitol K-9 Unit continuity series written by several authors. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize this when I chose it for our TBR Challenge theme of Friends for February. It suits the friends TBR theme as this couple grew to like each other over time, and then fall in love. The last few chapters seemed to wrap up some continuing suspense from previous books that I didn’t read, so I had to resist the urge to skip it as it felt like filler to me.
Isaac Black and his canine partner Abby find a bomb just before it explodes. Isaac is injured enough to go to the ER for treatment, where he’s treated by Daniella Dunne, a very nervous nurse in the witness protection program. He can’t shake his need to protect Daniella from whatever scares her enough to run. Will she trust Isaac enough to tell him the truth?
Daniella has every right to fear because her father who killed her mother with a bomb is now out of jail. The recent bombing puts Daniella in the media spotlight and has ruined her cover. Can Isaac Black and his siblings protect her, or will she need to run?
To me, this sounded right up my alley. I have an interest in K-9 due to my husband’s background, and I love a good suspenseful story. I’m not really fond of politics, especially at the moment, so I was hopeful that part of the story would be low key. For the most part, politics weren’t the full focus of the story, even though they were key in solving some of the what I suspect was part of the continuity series suspense.
This book had a lot going for it, but unfortunately the believability factor was constantly nagging at me. I enjoyed the underlying faith message in the beginning, but even that contradicted itself in the middle of the book. Daniella and Isaac’s characterization both seemed off. They would say one thing, then in the next few pages go against what they had claimed on a prior page. It wasn’t like they had time to think about it and change their mind, they just flip-flopped without reasoning.
The cop was too good, without the edge needed to do his job well. He kept making rookie mistakes. To catch a criminal, you need to think like one, and this guy was too nice and naïve to get there. Yes, he was smitten by Daniella, but I’m not sure why. His infatuation seemed to mess with his cop instincts, or he was too green to have acquired them. The good thing is, he knew she was affecting his performance and admitted it.
This story had a lot of potential. I really liked the idea of three siblings living together on an inherited farm, each with their own expertise. I would have enjoyed more interaction with all of them together. The author obviously has talent. Her writing is strong and the dialogue is good. It just seems like she was hemmed in by all these actions that had to happen in a very few pages to continue the series. That didn’t leave enough room for believable characterization.
I see a lot of positive reviews for this Capitol K-9 Unit continuity series, so my suggestion is to start at the beginning to see if this works for you. My wish is that the reader service wouldn’t send books late in a series like this to a member who hasn’t acquired the first ones. It’s one of the reasons I canceled my subscription. I would have much preferred that they stick to single titles, or the first book in a series, to give the reader a chance to decide if they want to buy more.
I hate giving a book a negative review because I know there are many people who worked hard on it to get it to publication. It’s evident that this is the case with this book. So, with that in mind, I really tried to think about why it didn’t work for me. The bottom line – there were too many plot conveniences. I can handle one or two and just give the book an eye-roll and be done with it. But, the inconsistencies in this one kept me from enjoying the story.
Let’s not forget that I’m a tough sell when it comes to Romantic Suspense. Another reader will more than likely love this book because it’s their jam. I can’t change my reader instincts and what makes me pause – I just really enjoy evaluating why certain books do or do not work for me. That means this one gave me plenty to think about.
My TBR is filled with more Love Inspired Suspense to try, but my biggest pile is Love Inspired Historicals. I’ll dive into those next to see if they’re going to work for my preferences. Wish me luck!

This was a surprisingly good romantic suspense novel. I did take off a star because the author threw in some Christian mythology with a heavy hand from time to time with completely ridiculous statements like a woman in the witness protection program being told by a Christian idiot that seeing her father murder her mother by bombing the car was in was probably "God's plan" to "get her out of an unhappy marriage" (what the hell is wrong with just getting a divorce where no one gets blown up in a car?) and it was likely "God's time to call her home" and look it helped the girl to have to lose her mom, testify against her dad, and have to go into the Federal Witness Protection program and change her name and live in terror for the rest of her life because the maniac dad swore to kill her and is trying to. Oh yeah, don't we all wished to be so blessed? This is bizarre. I did skim over the crazy Christian crap because fortunately it only took up about 2% of the book and seemed to have been thrown in after the story was written just to have it there.
Otherwise, this was a good story. K-9 cop Isaac Black is in Washington, DC at the Washington monument with his drug-sniffing beagle Abby. A crooked senator has called a special press conference so the area has been checked for bombs. After the check, however, someone in a suit and tie managed to stick a suitcase with a bomb in it on a bench and Isaac, whose dog Abby sensed it and gave warning, is badly injured on his leg as he threw himself on Abby to protect her with his own body. He is a great character- an animal lover who treats his official dog and his adopted dogs at home like family and is protective. He rescues dogs as well. He keeps sending EMTs away, begging them to see to others before him until a police detective friend makes him let the detective drive him to the emergency room since ambulances are overwhelmed.
At the hospital, he is helped by trauma nurse Daniella who acts so weird both Isaac and his boss decide to do a background check on her lest she be involved with whoever set the bomb. Her face gets on film on the news and she freaks. What Isaac doesn't know is that 10 years earlier as a teen she watched her evil criminal dad murder his wife by blowing up her car and she testified against him and he threatened to kill her. She is in the Witness Protection Program and they set her up in DC (she is from Florida), helped her get a nursing degree and legally changed her id.
The next day, she gets a threatening call from her dad and is running out the door and right into the arms of Isaac who has learned she seems to have no past prior to 10 years ago. When Abby finds a bomb in her car, she is forced to go home with Isaac where he along with his former military brother and sister run a farm they inherited. But then the bombs, shots, and kidnappings just keep coming.
This was nicely told with characters I liked a lot, plenty of dogs and an ornery cat, and plenty of action.
~~An Engaging 'Who-Done-It' Book~~ K-9 cop Isaac and his partner Abby (smart and cute beagle) are a formidable team in Detecting Danger, as they protect Daniella from her father, a murderer. I like how Isaac's hard exterior crumbles bit by bit around Daniella. It is good to see how Daniella takes initiative for her circumstance. Daniella's initiative (ahem-- stubbornness), the hero is quick to mention, is one of the aspects that piqued my curiosity. It works well to knock the suspense up a notch because I *needed* to know what motivated Daniella! The K-9 unit dogs and the ranch animals added a nice edge to this story. Abby is adorable and loves Isaac and Daniella to the moon. Daniella's cat--Puddy--is funny when she meets Abby for the first time. Detecting Danger is a cozy suspense book with a touch of sweet romance. ~Laurie Kozlowski
Infantile writing, moronic plot line. Even room temperature IQ will be turned off by this silly excuse for a book. So bad that even Hallmark channel would run from this.
This was a total waste of the story for me, the only thing that saved it from one star is resolving the main part of the murder mystery threading the Capitol K-9 Unit stories together. It was a pretty good twist.
The hero Isaac and his bomb detecting beagle, Abby meet up in the E-R with nurse, Daniella. He's in the midst of the murder investigation and she's suddenly outed from witness protection by a news story cutaway shot. Her father murdered her mother with a bomb, just one of the many absurd coincidences that populate this book.
Our heroine Daniella dithers between her options that put her would be protectors in danger, the thing she supposedly is trying to avoid. If I were Isaac I'd run like crazy from this chick instead of promising to marry her.
The series involves solving the death of Michael Jeffries --except for this book. Why introduce another criminal who has no bearing on the central crime of the series?
Her face was in the news and now she is in the run because of the person that was looking for her found her. She tried her best to stay hidden and even change her name so that nobody can find her. She ran away 10 years ago after her mother had died from her abusive father. She met Isaac in the hospital because he was injured when the bomb exploded and then he instantly attracted to her and felt that she needs protection though he didn't know about her situation yet. Love that he and his family protects her. Haha...and his siblings tease him with her. And love that him and his sister bring her back to the Lord telling her that God never leave her and also ask Him to help her forgive herself and also her father though her father is bad person. And also she managed to make Tommy open up about who he saw that night. (can't spoil it read then you know what tactic that she used)
They are getting closer and closer to find the mastermind of the case. Can't wait to find out but I kind of think that I know who it is. Hopefully my guess is right.
This book is the fifth book of the series by 6 different authors. So it is an ongoing case with a few cases that are related along the way. Can't wait to find out who is behind this case.
I couldn't decide between a 1 or 2 rating on this book so I went with the 2. I've liked Blake through this series but unfortunately this book was a disappointment.
It wasn't Blake that was the disappointment it was Daniella, the storyline and the repetition. Other than Daniella's dad continously trying to kill her there was no real action going on.
Daniella was so boring and in my opinion not very smart. Her father is trying to kill her, Blake is trying to protect her and she acts stupid and careless. Then she gets Becky to help her run away which was out of character for Becky.
The K-9 Handlers are suppose to be top notch yet every story has them making rookie mistakes. Blake was doing good until the scene at his home with Daniella's dad. Between Blake, Jake and Daniella they had her father down and out. Then Blake decides to care for Becky and doesn't handcuff the father. So guess what happens?
I did like the devlopments of the original crime in book one although it took them long enough. I'm looking forward to wrapping this series up.

A serial bomber is threatening a nurse, who ends up with very personal protection from Capitol K-9 officer Isaac.
Like the other books in the series, there are twisting subplots. The main plots are well integrated through the different books.
This book is my favorite of the series for a few reasons: * The doggy moments are plentiful, sweet, and realistic. There are some hilarious interactions between Abby the dog and Puddy the cat. * This book nailed several details which detracted from the other books due to lack of research. Officers wore police uniforms, drove actual police vehicles, used both radios and cellphones appropriately, and even took time to write reports. * Where characters acted irrationally, their actions were adequately explained.
Characters: ♡ Capitol Officer Isaac Black ♡ ER nurse and protected witness Daniella Dunne ♡ Abby, bomb detection Beagle
K-9 office Isaac Black is determined to find out what is going on when a bomb explodes at the Washington Monument. He is injured and ends up at the ER where is nurse acts secretively. What is going on? Then he follows up with her and finds she is fixing to run because she is in danger? Who is trying to kill her and why? Is it tied to the bombing or is something else going on? Will Isaac be able to protect Daniella? Will they both survive? Will the K-9 unit be able to finally solve the murder of Michael Jeffries' from the first book? Hang on to your seat!
Bomb explodes before a political speech, injuring Isaac, taken to hospital he encounters a nervous nurse, saying it was just bombs. This shy, quiet woman gave his heart a thug. For Daniella, it brought the vendetta her father had against her. Her character was hard to take in this plot, she was so determined to do it herself, and putting others at risks, continually. Overall the story was good, the plot line continued to the end. Abby seemed so special.
I swear these books just keep getting better and better. It's impossible to put one down once you start it. The nice thing about this type of series is that while each is its own story, they are also connected to a central theme and have interlocking characters. I really like them.
Rookie Officer Isaac Black is injured just after his dog discovers a bomb at a monument in Washington, DC. When he gets to the ER, he realizes that his nurse is terrified. Upon investigation, he and his boss discover that she has no past. The next day, he stops to see her and finds a bomb under her call. She confides in him and he helps her.
I am still so shocked that this company would say that the new technology of digital is a good thing . You must not have ever listened to these audiobooks. It is such a failed technology. You are showing you do value your authors or listeners. It is so hard to keep the audiobook straight when it is a joke to listen to. please do something about this.
I just finished the fifth book in the Capitol K-9 unit series. The story was pretty good and the characters were engaging. I actually gave it a 3.5 rating. Towards the middle of the book the author became a little preachy and I wasn't in the mood for that. If it hadn't been for the middle of the book I would have given it a 4.
I really love the way Valerie Hansen writes. This is another very entertaining book with wonderful characters, great suspense, action, and a clean romance. I love the way God is woven into the story. And I always love the K-9s when they are part of the story.
Not the most-developed in both characters and the overall story. The characters were not consistent at all and felt very disjointed, and Fagan felt very two-dimensional. Overall I was disappointed by this one.
This is another good book. I really enjoy these Capitol K-9 books. I'm glad God is involved in these books. He can cause things to work out according to His plan.
Daniella Dunne is in witness protection after testifying against her father who murdered her mother. She now lives in Washington, D.C. and is an ER nurse. Staying out of the limelight is her life.
Trouble starts though when a bomb goes off near Congressman Jeffries and he is rushed to hospital. Followed by the reporters, eager for news.
Someone has now found Daniella. But what connection does her father have to all the trouble that's been going on lately surrounding the congressman and the death of his son?
This is a nice continuation to the Capitol K-9 Unit continuity and I really love the dogs from the K-9 Unit which have a huge part to play in this series. I really enjoyed the Texas K-9 Unit continuity which came out in 2013, and so am really pleased to have another series featuring the dogs and their protection skills. This story wasn't my favourite of the series, but definitely helped fill in some more pieces of the puzzle. Now, we just need to catch that culprit!
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
You really do need to read these books in order as each book, while a story on its own, also has a plot which runs and develops through all the 6 books, building up to the grand finale in book 6. This means that you will not only want to read this book, but also the other 5 in the series! So if you are looking for a one off story to read, then this is not the book for you. However, if you are short of reading material and want a series to get you going, then you might want to try out this miniseries.
Also coming out near Christmas time there is another book centered around the K-9 Unit which I'm looking forward to reading:
In the fifth installment of the “Capitol K-9 Unit” book series, “Detecting Danger” by Valerie Hansen; K-9 Officer Isaac Black and his loyal canine partner Abby are in for the most explosive case of their lives when responding to a bomb threat at the Washington Monument. After completing what should have been a thorough sweep of the area, Abby alerts to a suspicious package nearby containing an explosive device targeting civilians and first responders. Unfortunately, the bomb squad is too late to diffuse it and the device detonates wounding Isaac. Upon arriving at the Emergency Room, he soon discovers that there’s more to this incident than meets the eye. He meets Daniella Dunne, a hospital nurse in Witness Protection who has a cunning and nefarious psychopath on her tail. Promptly, Isaac and Abby assume the roles of reluctant and persistent guardians for the frightened and childishly stubborn Daniella.
As the stalwart duo keep an uneasy vigil shadowing their client, Abby detects numerous signs of explosives lurking within Ms. Dunne’s apartment and an IED concealed underneath her car. Desperate for a solution, Isaac takes the unorthodox approach of hiding Daniella at his family’s farm where his humorous and reliably dependable siblings back him up and build a strong bond with Daniella. There’s danger looming on the horizon as repeated attempts on her life put both Isaac and his family in mortal danger. It’s up to a courageous band of officers, ordinary people and intelligent dogs to protect one innocent life from harm.
I found this novel to be a cross between “K-9” and “The Bodyguard” with some interesting subplots with law enforcement, animal humor and peril woven in. The mood is romantic and adventurous at the same time but not enough thought devoted to how explosive detection canine teams would handle explosive situations. However, this book was still worth the time to read. If you’re a fan of the “Capitol K-9” book series or just like a romance story of an officer and his dog rescuing the damsel in distress than this book is for you.
This was a nice, clean inspirational romance. Daniella was in the Witness Protection Program after testifying against her father. She witnessed him murder her mother by detonating a bomb. Isaac works with the police K-9 unit with Abby, his bomb sniffing Beagle. When an explosion occurs at the Washington Monument, it's only thanks to Abby' s skills that no one was killed. Isaac, however, is injured by flying debris. When he goes to the ER, it's Daniella who's assigned to be his nurse. He notices right away how nervous and on edge she seems to be but when a reporter snaps her picture, she loses it. He gets her to tell him why she's so afraid. Even though her father is in prison that doesn't mean he wouldn't hire someone to eliminate her. If her face is on the news then surely he will have an easier time of finding her. Unfortunately, when Isaac digs deeper into Daniella' s story, he discovers her father was released on a technicality. Then Abby detects a bomb in Daniella' s car. Isaac takes her to stay at his family farm until she can contact the U. S. Marshalls. When other attempts are made on her life and Isaac' s family is endangered, Daniella feels she has no choice but to leave. So what will become of her growing affection for Isaac? She's finally met a man she could love only to lose him? Where is God in all this? And how can she believe He loves her when he let her mother die and she, Daniella, lost everything dear to her? Was what Isaac' s sister told her true? That maybe everything happened for a reason and she was brought into their lives to be with Isaac and become a part of their family? To get a fresh start at a new life? Excellent job by the author of getting her point across while providing her readers with a love story loaded with action and suspense. I loved Abby and her relationship with Danielle' s cat was quite amusing. Look forward to reading more of the author's work.
This is the 5th book in the Capital K-9 series. Each book in this 6 book series is written by different authors. While each could be a stand alone, the series is excellent and I think you're going to want to read every book. Valerie Hansen did a great job of continuing the mystery and telling her part of the story. I enjoyed the book but I had difficulty with a minor character named Jake or Jacob. For most of the book, the character is called Jake. Then the name Jacob is substituted but only when the character's actions are described. I don't recall any time one of the characters called this person Jacob. They used the name Jake when saying his name. This was very distracting for me but thankfully Jake/Jacob was a minor character.
In this book, Issac and his bomb-sniffing beagle, Abby are involved with investigating a bombing during a press conference by Senator Harland Jeffries. Isaac is injured and meets ER nurse Daniella Dunne during treatment. In addition to the mystery of who killed Michael Jefferies and shot the Senator, someone is trying to kill Daniella.
