The Gentlemen's Gamble

A Novel Engagement

Rate this book
A reckless wager. A forgotten promise. Two enemies in a race to the altar.

When a stormy night leads to a wager among bachelors, Rowan Ashworth finds himself bound by a formidable challenge: the last man to wed must pay one hundred pounds to the others. With several friends already married and another close behind, Rowan has little choice but to follow through on a childhood promise—to marry the woman his parents intended for him, a vexing woman who despises him.

Arabella Delafield has no intention of becoming Rowan’s bride—promises or otherwise. Rowan hurt her deeply when they were younger, and to forget it would be foolish. To escape the match, she launches a marriage campaign of her own, desperate to find a husband before Rowan can claim her hand. But when an unexpected encounter with a charming, bookish stranger derails her plans, she’s unprepared for just how familiar he feels.

A war of wills, mistaken identities, and surprise chemistry turn a childhood promise into a second chance neither expected—and a love neither can outrun.

“I faced certain death, so agreeing to marry a woman I despised in a harmless bet could hardly be held against me.”

Oh I just adored this regency romance! What’s not to love about an arranged marriage to your childhood nemesis. It’s the fourth book in the Gentlemen’s Gamble series with each book written by a different author. It’s such a fun premise… 7 friends make a wager on who will marry last. The last one to marry will pay each of the others a 100 pounds. It’s years later and four friends have married & It’s time for Rowan to face his childhood nemesis & propose to the woman his parents arranged for him to marry. It’s been 12 years since he has seen Arabella… both are holding on to the past hurts but things have changed over the years and a childhood promise may turn into a second chance neither of them expected. It’s sweet & swoony full of teasing, literary references & the love of books. You will fall in love with Miss Page & Mr Prologue 😉

“We stared at each other for a moment-two souls who understood books and possibly each other.”

"I want to spend all the chapters of my life with you until the very last page."

~A reckless wager. A forgotten promise. Two enemies in a race to the altar...

“I faced certain death, so agreeing to marry a woman I despised in a harmless bet could hardly be held against me.”
-A Novel Engagement, my friends, is in and out pure book treasure delight! It is a dear story beautifully blended with forced proximity, a second-chance romance of sorts, lots of family, banter, and a sweet romance. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent with a war of wills, mistaken identities, and with surprise chemistry that turned a childhood promise into a second chance neither dear characters could have expected-and perhaps the dearest love neither would want to outrun. I absolutely loved the many literary aspects weaved so precisely into this story, and especially loved the heart stretching second chances within. Watching such endearing characters come to see that, it’s in the flaws that make them are unique and relatable was heartwarming. I loved savoring and devouring this story in all the ways! It truly is worth the dear read as is this fantastic series! Well-done!📚💯

“I simply want you and only you.”

•Content: some mild social drinking of port (as was customary during Regency era), light themes of resentment, loss of parent (past), grief from loss (on page; present), kisses only.

“I cannot help it if I find you as radiant as the stars.”

-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

“You’re right. I did have some delusions where you were concerned. My vision is clearing rapidly now.
When you’re ready for that kiss, let me know. I’ll be all too happy to finish this.”

Where to start? This book is so cleverly written. So many great bookish references! I mean just look at the title. I loved the re-meet cute.

There is a lot of enemies to more, but a little mistaken identity and second chances as well.

Who wouldn’t fall in love with a boring person with the name Clodwick? lol Think the annoying Mr. Collins from Pride And Prejudice only worse! You would think Rowan was a shoo-in. But no. Arabella is determined to marry Mr. Clodwick, no matter how attracted she is to Rowan.

It was fun to see all the misunderstandings and twists this story took. A great Regency romance full of fun, witty banter, misunderstandings and apologies. It’s a great ride!

I also listened to the audiobook. The voice actors were amazing. They really brought the story to life. You can’t go wrong with audio or print! Such an entertaining story!

*****Audiobook Update******
I loved the audiobook just as much as I loved reading it. It was so fun getting to experience my favorite moments again, this time brought to life by the talented narrators, Lola Jones and Eli Thorne. They really captured the humor and emotion of the story, and I didn’t want to stop listening.
*************************

This was an easy five-star read for me. I absolutely loved it, and it's my new favorite by Anneka Walker.

Rowan Ashworth finds himself bound by a bachelor’s wager—and with his friends quickly pairing off (including himself, only 3 are still unmarried), he’s running out of time. His solution? Fulfill the childhood promise his parents made… to marry Arabella Delafield. The problem is she despises him.

And Arabella? She isn't waiting around to be given to Rowan. She visits her married sister, and while there launches her own marriage campaign to beat Rowan to the altar, by attaching herself to her brother-in-law's cousin—Mr. Clodwick, who's quite the character. The chaos commences when she returns home to announce she and Clodwick are "engaged to be married" on the same day Rowan arrives to meet with her father. Arabella is given two weeks to convince her father that Clodwick is the better man for her, and that's when the chaos begins.

I loved the enemies-to-lovers tension in this one. It's not just casual annoyance; there's history and hurt between Rowan and Arabella, so all their interactions and the wonderful banter have a deeper meaning. Watching them try to outmaneuver each other was such fun! One of my favorite scenes was Arabella, Clodwick, and Rowan looking at "Arabella's" art. I laughed until my eyes watered.

Things I loved:
📖 Dual POV
📖 Enemies-to-lovers
📖 All the banter!!
📖 The meet-cute
📖 Miss Page & Mr. Prologue
📖 He falls first (it's a new favorite trope)
📖 "Arabella's" art (IYKYK)
📖 Mr. Clodwick (great comedic relief)

If you love your Regency romance with sharp banter, simmering tension, and some laugh out loud moments…this one is a must-read. This is part of a multi-author series, it can be enjoyed as a standalone.

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions in this review are my own.

A Novel Engagement by Anneka R. Walker

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review, and all opinions are my own.

This story had so many elements I love—childhood promises, enemies-to-more tension, a reckless wager, and just enough mistaken identity to keep things interesting. Rowan and Arabella’s history added depth to their romance, and I enjoyed watching their war of wills slowly soften into something much sweeter.

The premise felt very Regency and full of charm, especially with the race-to-the-altar stakes woven throughout the story.

This audiobook features dual narration, which I usually enjoy. I thought both narrators did a lovely job with characters of their own gender. For me personally, some of the cross-voicing occasionally pulled me out of the story, but that’s simply a preference thing and may not bother other listeners.

Overall, I enjoyed the romance, the tension, and the second-chance feel woven throughout.

“I have my answer.” “W-what?” I stuttered, completely dazed. “You’re a liar, Arabella Delafield. You’re more drawn to me than you dare admit. So fight all you want, but in the end, we both know I’m the only one for you.”

Oh! This enemies to lovers story is perfectly delightful with forced proximity, a second-chance romance of sorts, lots of family, banter, and a sweet romance.

Rowan is charming, kind, and a tease determined to change Arabella’s mind. I loved how quickly his attraction grew and all that he was willing to do to show Arabella that he wasn’t the same person she knew. I loved how quickly the bet and even family opinions didn’t matter when compared to what he and Arabella desired. I was definitely rooting for Rowan to fight for Arabella. Arabella is witty and determined. She is steadfast in her desire to hold Rowan’s childhood meanness against him. I very much enjoyed seeing him scale her defenses and her softening to the man he had become. Rowan and Arabella’s disagreements and banter were entertaining. Their chemistry was so good and Rowan’s apology (that should be read kiss) perfectly swoony. 🫠 I loved that they both loved books, especially Shakespeare. Some of my favorite parts were when they finally talked out what drove their childhood hurts and were honest with each other.

A few more quotes:
“How can something so musty help anything?” “Books are the perfect distraction. I can be braver when I pretend to be someone else. And it isn’t musty but the smell of fresh paper. It’s marvelous.”

“You’re right. I did have some delusions where you were concerned. My vision is clearing rapidly now. When you’re ready for that kiss, let me know. I’ll be all too happy to finish this.”

“I was only a merciless tease with you, you know. No one got under my skin like you did.” “I know exactly what you mean. I considered myself a sweet girl until you were around. You brought out the worst in me.” She smiled. “You still do.”

This ARC was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.

Each of the books in this series are wonderful!!! I don't know if I can pick a favorite because I've loved every one of them. Anneka Walker definitely has a new favorite book of hers for me! I adored this one so much! Arabella and Rowan were wonderful characters. They've been betrothed since they were very young and Rowan has avoided following through with marrying her for years. But he finally is ready and on his way to stay with her family and marry Arabella. But Arabella has plans of her own. Find a different man to marry! And what ensues is a bit of a tangled web that these two have woven! Hahaha! A Shakespeare reference is very apropos right now. IYKYK! And if you don't know then you'll have to read the book (or listen to the audiobook) to understand!

I loved all of their initial interactions. Especially because we as the reader understand something very important that these two don't know! Hahaha! Oh my, there were so many delightful moments where I laughed out loud or was giggling to myself! I love these two! They just need to talk and figure out a few things and everything will make sense. But of course that wouldn't allow us readers to enjoy the journey they get to go on. And oh what a journey it is! I loved it so much! (Sorry, I keep saying that, but it is very true!)

The history between these two is very interwoven and connected and complicated...until it's not and it's explained (the complicated part that is)! I loved having all of the little bits and pieces of their past being revealed and having more moments of "you two just need to see the light and all will be well"! Believe me when I say that it is all worth it! I loved when they finally started to have those aha moments and allowed for the hurts of the past to fade away and to really see what is right in front of them! *Happy Sigh*

Beautiful story of family, friendship, understanding, forgiveness, and love!!! I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed Lola Jones and Eli Thorne's talents in bringing these two characters and their story to life! I loved imagining it all in my head while hearing their voices. It was very enjoyable!

Content: Clean. No language. Nothing further than a few kisses.

I received a copy of the audiobook from Dreamscape Select via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

“If we lived through this insanity, I would require more than just time. I’d need an abundance of courage to go with it. For I knew a different sort of fear—one with long legs and an infuriating tongue.”

✨Oh my goodness!! You all are gonna love A Novel Engagement! In true Anneka fashion there is a romantic comedy vibe to this regency romance and I. Love. It!!! If you’ve read her Matchmaking Mamas series, you’ll know the vibe I’m talking about, and if you haven’t read those books yet, you need too!

✨Rowan and Arabella’s story will have you laughing till you cry, melting your heart, and bringing the biggest smile to your face! I adored the mistaken identity and the way Arabella is working so hard to avoid her “promised arrangement”! There is so much to love about this story, the angst, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, second chances, banter, humor, and the epilogue is just perfection!! Rowan is the sweetest MMC and I loved all the delightful ways he was proving himself to Arabella!!

‘Was he allowed to wink at me? Wasn’t that against the rules for a childhood nemesis?’

✨This story includes historical book references, quotes, and is perfect for book lovers!! After reading the story I love the title of this book even more!

“Books are the perfect distraction. I can be braver when I pretend to be someone else. And it isn’t musty but the smell of fresh paper. It’s marvelous.”

Content: closed door romance, kisses only, no language.

Arranged for marriage by their parents as children, Arabella and Rowan became nemesis of sorts. 12 years later they meet as grown adults but don’t recognize each other. They enjoy their mutual love of books. But since Rowan is on his way to fulfill his marriage promise to Arabella he tries to not engage with her too much. Arabella likes him too but is trying to get out of her arranged marriage by attempting to get engaged to Mr. Clodwick. When they discover who the other is, sparks fly! Both in a good and a bad way. I loved this book so much! I loved the way Rowan and Arabella bickered with each other and bantered! And of course their chemistry was great too! Mr. Clodwick was such an odd character haha. I really liked Arabella’s family as well! Overall, a fantastic story and I recommend!

This book kept me up WAY too late and I absolutely loved every single minute of it!

From the opening scene, it captured my heart and I cannot go back. It is witty, unpredictable, and fabulously entertaining! Truly.

I don’t want to give too much away. Just know this: if you love historical romance, you will adore this one!

I kept hearing how absolutely amazing this one was from so many of my Bookstagram friends, and I’m happy to say I totally understand the hype! Just that ending scene alone in the library would make this book 5 stars for me, but from the very beginning you know this is going to be good from how Rowan proclaims that he will marry his enemy when he believes he is doomed to die at sea.

“If we lived through this insanity, I would require more than just time. I’d need an abundance of courage to go with it. For I knew a different sort of fear—one with long legs and an infuriating tongue. Miss Delafield was a tempest all on her own.”

Fast forward and Rowan and Arabella have a chance meeting, but it has been 12 years since they have seen each other in person and although Arabella seems familiar, she is no longer a child and they do not recognize each other. After a few more unexpected encounters they finally learn their true identities and it brings up old hurts and misunderstandings that caused their rift in the first place.

Some of my highlights:
📖The story of the first time they met 🥹
📖I have already mentioned the library scene, but let’s mention that one again because yeah iykyk
📖Loved Mr. Clodwick- definitely giving Mr. Collin’s a run for his money
📖Loved the relationship between her dad and Rowan
📖The scene with the 🐎
📖Just how attentive Rowan was overall

I have enjoyed every story in this series and can’t wait to see who wins the gentleman’s gamble next!

My new favorite book by Anneka. It’s a love story between two people, but also a love story about the love of books, of stories, of creativity.

Once again, I love the plot of the “gentleman’s gamble” forcing Rowan to decide it’s time he married the woman he has been avoiding for years-his betrothed.

Arabella has decided she will not let her future be decided for her, and when she hears that her betrothed is on his way to make things official, she takes matters into her own hands.

I love how very similar Rowan and Arabella were, yet they were the only two who could not see it. Their second “meet cute” was one of my very favorite things! The way that they realized that their perception of each other was not accurate and clouded by misunderstanding of childhood pain was so beautifully done.

The emotional pull between them was superb, and the chemistry fairly sparked off the page. I really could reread this book over and over again I loved it so much!

Perfection! With cleverly crafted dialogue and lively characters, this book captivates from first page to the last. Books, bookshops, libraries and writing play a supporting role in the story which adds to the delight. The writing is superb, the story creative and witty. It has the markings of the perfect book. Highly recommend this clean, entertaining romance.

Content: kissing only, no language or violence

Genre/Tropes: Historical Romance (Regency), multi-author series (can be read as a standalone), enemies to lovers, forced proximity, betrothed as children

My thoughts: This was my first by Anneka Walker and it certainly won’t be my last! I loved the chemistry between the main characters, from their “first” meeting when they don’t recognize each other (having last seen one another 12 years prior, as young teens) to all of their interactions, fights, and tender moments.

I also appreciated the literary references, including some passing things about folios and quartos (I *just* watched a lecture where manuscript preparation was discussed at length, so this was such a fun addition for me!).

The sisters’ bond was a treat as well, and I love how it all comes together at the end.

Contains an audiobook review.

This is the 3rd book in the multi author series, The Gentlemen's Gamble. It is a standalone story. These books can be read in any order if you don't care about the wager of who will marry last. This series is written by 6 different authors and the books are all kisses only stories set during the Regency time period.

A Novel Engagement is so aptly named since both characters are closely connected to books. The couple has been promised to each other since youth. The tension and banter contained in this book is glorious. It was such a fun read! The side characters add a whole other layer to this story! I loved it!

I was given the opportunity to read an advanced digital copy of the book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review. In addition to that, I have also been given a copy of the audiobook by Dreamscape Media via Netgalley. I will edit this review with my thoughts on the audiobook when I finish that. I'm really looking forward to it, especially since it is dual narration!

I want to add that I've now listened to the audio of this book. The story is even better listening to it! I absolutely loved the narrators. I thought both of them did a fantastic job!

A Novel Engagement is the 4th book in The Gentlemen’s Gamble Series.

What happens when you have 7 friends on a ship on the English Channel, in the middle of a storm, and they are all convinced they might actually die? They form a wager of course (such an early 20's male move). The wager? Whomever marries last owes the others £600. Rowan agrees to the wager. He has had a betrothed since he was a child, a Miss Arabella Delafield. Sure, she hates his guts, but his mother wanted this match and he might as well fulfill it. Six years later he goes to fulfill the betrothal.

Rowan Ashworth has known Arabella Delafield since childhood and they do not like each other. He witnessed her burn a book (a crime really) and she was mortified when he and his friends read her manuscript and made fun of it. To that, neither of them are keen on their betrothal. But now that the wager is on for Rowen, he feels it is his duty to fulfill his dead mother’s wish to marry Arabella.

Arabella, hearing that Rowan is travelling to her home to marry her, scrambles to find someone else to marry, and she find Mr. Clodwick and convinces him to marry her.

After a broken wheel, Rowan finally makes it to Elmhurst and finds out Arabella has brought another man! He is floored to say the least. He has to win her favor and apologize on his hands and knees to get her to marry him.

Rowan Ashworth: A literary critic who loves books, especially Shakespeare. He is observant, kind, and a bit of a prankster. Has a sense of humor.

Arabella Delafield: A writer... and Stubborn! Oh my gosh! Most stubborn female lead ever! She has some trauma from how Rowen treated her when they were younger and it takes her forever to see that he is not the annoying young teenager anymore and has actually matured. She also doesn’t like the idea of an arranged marriage as one of her friends is in an awful arranged marriage. She does have two sisters who support her no matter what, even if they may slightly disagree with her.

As the book progresses, Rowan has to learn some humility as he falls for Arabella, and Arabella has to slowly removed a stick from her butt to see that Rowan is exactly who she needs and Mr. Clodwick is just a bit too strange for her.

The pace of this book is a bit slower. It mainly involves Arabella battling her own feelings for Rowan, while poor Rowan is trying to figure out why Arabella doesn’t like him. He was flirtier than I was expecting. The thing that got me laughing was the fact that he never seemed to realized that he has always like her since he was about 13 and was just traumatized when he witnessed her burn a book.

It takes them a good long while to realize they are both a good fit for each other. I appreciate Rowan being the first to admit his feelings. The book is about two people who doubt each other and have to learn to trust again.

Tropes: Enemies to Lovers, Second Chance Romance, Mistaken Identity, Childhood connection, Arranged Marriage, He Falls First, Book nerds.

Favorite quotes:

• “As we have no mutual acquaintance to introduce us, I took the liberty of coming up with a name for you myself: Miss First Page. Seeing as all I know about you would fit in a few paragraphs, it felt fitting.”
I laughed at his cleverness and took a seat, handing him my new book. “Then you can be Mr. Prologue- the beginning of our acquaintance.”

• “Blast!” he exclaimed, reaching for me. “Your bad arm! Did I hurt your wrist?”
“No, just my life,” I grumbled.
He cupped his ear with his hand. “Pardon, you wish to be my wife?”

• “...you believe I care more for you?”
His voice lowered. “I think there is a strong possibility.”
I refused to let his sultry voice affect me. “There is also a strong possibility that I might strangle you if we were to wed.”
“I have more fondness for a half-dead tree.”
“Half-dead tree,” he repeated.

• His eyes drifted close.
My own eyes follow suit- wanting what I shouldn’t want.
Then nothing.
I opened them again.
His eyes were open too, his lips curled into a smile. “I have my answer.”
“W-what?” I stuttered, completely dazed.
“You’re a liar, Arabella Delafield. You’re more drawn to me than you dare admit. So fight all you want, but in the end, we both know I’m the only one for you.”

• ...I had visited her in secret every night for fourteen days. I hadn’t liked her very much, but neither did I want her to die. Even with our disagreements, I had always felt a tie to her... I had gone to her bedside and begged her to live. I did more than beg; I yelled at her and challenged her to get up and hit me as hard as she could. I would let her do it...She did not cower or waver when faced with death, and I knew she would do the same when faced when marrying her worst enemy.
• “I came here for a wife and no other expectation, but I fell under your spell the moment I saw you in Quillsbury. Am I alone in my feelings for you?... Is it too late?... Please, tell me it isn’t too late.”
“I’m confused Rowan.”...
I pulled back just enough to life her chin so we could see each other. “Your confusion is only natural considering our history, but can we not sort it out together?”

• “I want to spend all the chapters of my life with you until the very last page.”

Liked it. Good story flow. Story moved along at a good pace. Rowan had some funny one liners. That was probably the best part.

Rowan finally is making good on the betrothal his parents agreed to in his childhood. On the way, he gets a broken carriage wheel and has to stop in a town for repairs that take more than a day. To pass the time he enters a bookshop looking for a treasure. Just as he finds one another woman reaches for the same book. He sees her and finds her charming. Turns out it’s Arabella, but it’s been so long since they’ve seen each other, they do not recognize each other. Arabella thinks Rowan‘s hot too. They have not been introduced so they make up nicknames for each other. She explains that she is in town to hopefully become engaged to a Mr. Clodwick. He gives her advice on how to secure him which ends up working and she returns home to announce she is engaged. She viewed this as her only option as the Rowan she knows was a jerk. She knows he is to arrive soon and she needs to be engaged before he does. Much to her surprise Rowan is the man that let her take the prize Shakespeare book at the bookstore. The old prejudices immediately raise her hackles. Rowan and her had got along great as toddlers, but he had been mean to her as a child. You learned it’s in part because he was so heartbroken over his mother’s death and Arabella reminded him of that pain. He begins to try and win her favor. Mr. Clodwick sounds like a well off Mr. Collins. The idea of him was repulsive. Arabella’s sister liked the match because it meant they could live nearby, but Arabella would’ve been miserable. Rowan initially thinks to leave, but after a night sleep decides that would be rash. Her father will not give consent to the engagement for two weeks. He writes a letter to Arabella, but decides to not sign it. She thinks Mr. Clodwick sent the note. And it gives her hope for their relationship. He has a weird obsession with ghost, which seemed just a copout to make him less likable. As the story progresses, Rowan and Arabella clearly seem made for each other. You learned that Rowan made fun of one of her stories with his friends, which broke her heart and led to her, not trusting him ever again. Rowan successfully convinces her family that he is the better option, but after a disaster of a dinner, he realizes that forcing Arabella to him, would only lead to resentment. He releases her from their engagement. Rowan finds out that Arabella has a friend named Harriet who married a man who is controlling in the worst sort of way. She can never leave the house without permission. Rowan decides to reach out to the husband’s parents for intervention. Eventually, Rowan leaves the Home to a escort their aunt back to London. However, Rowan has to return to the home on the way back to his estate to return two books that Arabella’s dad wanted Rowan to read. Rowan is a book critic, and thoroughly enjoyed the books. They were a fiction and handwritten. There is this side quest about Arabella‘s younger sister, Elizabeth, and a stable boy. It resolves quickly after Elizabeth confesses she is not confident in the sweet words he tells her. She tells Arabella she wants someone who will treat her like Rowan treats Arabella. Elizabeth then tells Rowan that Arabella has changed her mind, and he just needs to figure out the rest. He confesses his feelings for her on a walk. She can’t process it enough and tells him she will find Rowan before he leaves the next morning. However, she oversleep. Which Rowan takes to mean he lost her. Harriet visits Arabella and tells her of Rowan’s intervention on her behalf. Arabella eventually decides she cannot marry, Mr. Clodwick because he is a fool and they have nothing in common. She had used her aunt’s relationship with Mr. Clodwick’s favorite painter to advance their engagement. However, the dinner with the Aunt was a disaster and so he meant to leave. Rowan returns in the middle of the night and quietly enters the front door. Arabella thinks it’s a thief and attacks him. She recognizes Rowan‘s voice. Rowan can tell something is different about Arabella and reiterate his feelings for her. Arabella writes him a letter that night confessing that she is an author. She confesses that she overheard his criticisms of her first book. She burned the first draft, which was the book. Rowan saw her burn in the fire that made him think Arabella didn’t like books. However, turns out the book he loved as a teenager was written by her. He had found it thinking it was dropped by a passerby. He apologized profusely to her and admitted that he still had the final draft of her book and his home, having read it multiple times. He recognized her handwriting from the letter and realized she was the author of the books. Her father had loaned Rowan. He told her there would be a bidding war over her books. They get married and the book ends with her telling Rowan that she’s pregnant and they love him.

“Some ladies would be reduced to tears after their childhood enemy threatened to kiss them, but Arabella had always been the strong sort.”

Say hello to one of my new favorite Regency romances, A Novel Engagement is absolutely adorable and charming! I was legit grinning the entire time I was reading this book. Rowan and Arabella were such entertaining characters with all their bookish traits and determination, their romance was not only fun to watch play out, but exactly the kind you want to cheer for. They had such delicious chemistry and banter—I was here for every interaction!

With expectations of a betrothal since they were children, Rowan returns after 12 years away to finally marry Arabella when he finds himself in danger of losing a marriage wager with his close friends. While he is unsure of how Arabella will receive him, seeing as they had a way of annoying each other quite nicely as kids, he never expected the extremes Arabella would go to not marry him.

I could not have loved the enemies to lovers vibes more in this story mixed with its own version of second chance romance. The witty and flirty banter that flew like sparks between Rowan and Arabella was the stuff dreams are made of. I was so in love with their back and forth, I couldn’t stop reading while simultaneously never wanting the book to end. The way Rowan starts to fall first made him an even cuter hero. He was such a gentleman and I loved his literary passions too. Arabella’s stubbornness was relatable and I loved when she and Rowan finally cleared the air and how her heart softens throughout the story.

The Delafield family was also such a delight. I loved their roles as supporting characters, especially the sisters’ solidarity and the way Rowan was breaking through their defenses with his charming self. And then there was Clodwick, whose character is as memorable as Mr. Collins and made me laugh so much. It just added so much humor to the story.
I could write a list with so many more things I loved about this story, but I’ll stick with recommending you check it out yourself. I am confident you will love these characters, the dual POV, and romance. It was a ten star read for me and I highly recommend it!

I originally read this as an ebook, but I enjoyed it so much, I also bought the paperback and the audiobook and let me tell you, the audiobook version is incredible! I absolutely loved the dual narrators. The way Eli Thorne encapsulated Rowan brought him to life so much for me and Lola Jones captured Arabella’s personality so well. Their accents were perfection and listening to this made me practically giddy.

"I cannot help it if I find you as radiant as the stars."

A Novel Engagement by Anneka Walker

SWOON ALERT!
I just found my newest Regency Romance to rave about and also my favorite Anneka Walker book (though I have yet to read all of Anneka's books).
This will definitely be a top favorite Regency and Historical Romance. Everyone reading this review, drop everything and go read this book!
It will most likely make you laugh so hard, you might pee your pants. Someone will have to mop you off the floor because you will be a puddle from swooning.
And if you are a book lover, you will LOVE all of the literary references. That aspect was so fun, from the bookshop to the nicknames, and even the title.

I literally smiled the whole way through this story.
Ha! Mr. Clodwick's character was so quirky and hilarious. I might have laughed-cringed so many times.
And Rowan's quips toward him were so witty and just had me dying inside they were so funny.

As you can see from my favorite parts below, I loved every minute of this literary genius of a story! The banter between Rowan and Arabella was so witty. Boy, they keep each other on their toes.
I'm convinced Anneka is the queen of Regency Romcoms! I don't know how she comes up with the hilarious scenes and dialogue that she does, but she is a genius!

I HIGHLY recommend this Regency Romance. I cannot wait to have a paperback on my favorite-books shelf!

Absolutely charming!

After a reckless wager forces him toward marriage, Rowan Ashworth resolves to fulfill a childhood promise and wed Arabella Delafield, who happens to be the the very woman who despises him for a past hurt.

Determined to escape the match, Arabella launches her own race to the altar, only to find herself drawn to a charming stranger who feels unexpectedly familiar. As rivalry turns to mistaken identity and undeniable chemistry, their battle of wills becomes a second chance at the love neither saw coming.

What you'll love:
Regency era
single pov
enemies to lovers
hidden identity
matchmaking parents
forced proximity
bookish characters
he falls first
swoony kisses
chemistry and banter
perfect ending!!!

Oh, my word! This utterly adorable story completely stole my heart! From the very first unforgettable meet-cute (#iykyk) to the final page of the perfect epilogue, I was absolutely smitten. It had me smiling, sighing, and clutching the book to my chest more than once.

How I love Rowan and Arabella! These two are locked in a battle of wits and wills while quietly (and not so quietly!) losing their hearts to each other, and I could not get enough. Their sharp, flirty bante, layered under past hurts and misunderstandings, adds a tender second-chance vibe to this enemies to lovers romance. The tension, the longing, the stolen glances...I was here for all of it! There are so many heartwarming, swoony, laugh-out-loud moments and I never wanted the story to end.

And no review would be complete without mentioning Clodwick, the suitor who gives off Mr. Collins vibes… but somehow even worse. Completely unforgettable and delightfully absurd, he adds just the right touch of lighthearted humor and chaos to an already charming story.

Though this is part of a multi-author series, it can easily be enjoyed as a standalone. Fair warning, though...once you read one, you’ll be reaching for the rest!

If you love charming Regency romances filled with wit, warmth, undeniable chemistry, and a hero who falls first, this one belongs at the very top of your TBR, my friends!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

Ahh, all the stars for this deliciously clever Regency romance! I adore Anneka Walker’s books, & A Novel Engagement is a must-read, new favorite. Bring on all the Anne & Gilbert vibes, this hidden identity, childhood-nemesis-to-more romance had me eagerly turning pages. I loved every witty comment, the laugh-out-loud humor, the sizzling underlying tension, & those irresistible kisses. Each book in the Gentlemen’s Gamble series has been an instant favorite, & this one proudly joins the list.

One by one, Rowan Ashworth’s friends have married. After a bet made years ago on a stormy sea voyage, Rowan must find a wife, or risk paying out 600 pounds as the bachelors continue to dwindle. He agrees to marry his vexing childhood nemesis, Arabella Delafield whom he hasn’t seen in years, to fulfill his familial duty & save his purse. On his journey, he meets a charming beauty in a bookshop he dubs “Miss Page.” Imagine his surprise when the woman who captured his imagination turns out to be Arabella.

The last man Arabella wants to marry is Rowan. Her greatest joy is writing, a secret she must keep from him since he’s a scathing literary critic. She has a plan: secure an engagement to the extremely superstitious & oblivious Mr. Clodwick (think Mr. Collins) so she can continue her writing uninterrupted. But when a handsome stranger she calls “Mr. Prologue” nearly upends her plans, & turns out to be Rowan, she’s more determined than ever to marry Mr. Clodwick. Her father gives her two weeks to prove Mr. Clodwick is the right choice, or marry Rowan.

Utterly delightful! From the brilliant literary references to the delicious chemistry & hilarious lines, I adored every moment. Rowan’s such a charmer; beneath his childhood teasing lies a tender reason for it all. I loved discovering what makes him tick. Arabella’s clever, stubborn, & a force to be reckoned with. I loved watching her walls crumble as she sees the man Rowan has become. Adored their journey to love!

Highest of recommendations! Though part of a series, each book stands alone, but recommend reading in order to avoid spoilers. I received an advanced copy from the author, but also purchased in Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.

5 stars (definitely one of my favorite reads of the year thus far). I sat down to read a few chapters before bed, and, well, it was well after midnight when I finished it.

A dual-POV, arranged marriage, enemies-to-lovers story that actually works!

He was an angry, grieving youth who took that out on a constant in his life--the gal he was promised to marry.

She refuses to marry someone who will belittle her and force her to fit a mold of his standards.

Well, it's been 12 years, and it is time to claim his marriage before he loses this wager. A lot happens in 12 years. Men become taller, broader, and their jawlines chisel. Women grow into the awkwardly long arms and legs of tweenhood, their faces change, and those goofy freckles ... well, they disappear mostly, too.

This book has so many tropes in it that are done so well they don't feel tropey--meet-cute, mistaken identity, arranged marriage, enemies-to-lovers, and a few more. There is clear character development. He doesn't shy away from the fact he has been a terrible meany to her in their youth, and apologizes for it, asking what he can to do to help her heal. She is a bit more willing to hold a grudge, but soon realizes that she's mostly harming and fighting herself now, not him, by holding onto hatred and unforgiveness.

Both characters are literature buffs. She also writes. He collects and is a well-acclaimed critic.

I want a full length novel series of these two! Epilogues are never enough.

Spice: kisses, some silly "oops, I tripped and landed right on top of you" scenes that end reasonably quickly with minimal commentary during the scene.

No language. No violence. A side character is in an arranged marriage with a man who is not kind to her. He doesn't physically harm her, but he is incredibly controlling in the "tame your woman" sort of way that was common at the time (no music practicing, no guests, stay in your suite all the time, must ask permission before going out, etc). His character does change when given the pressure of money and society.

This series has my heart! I adore each story in this series and this one is such a beautiful addition to the series! If you've been here long, you know I am a big fan of Anneka's books and this is one of my new favorites.

Arranged marriage/childhood betrothal. Enemies to lovers. Mistaken identity. Bookish MMC & FMC. Forced proximity. He saves her. Childhood nicknames. Surprising feelings. Only one horse. Witty banter.

From the moment Rowan and Arabella brush hands while reaching for the same Shakespeare quarto, I was fully invested in their love story. They were betrothed as children but spent their childhoods as enemies and hold some deep (misunderstood) grudges against each other. They haven't seen each other in years but the sparks fly almost immediately! I loved their (re)meet cute and how they don't recognize each other. Their discussions of books are just lovely! When they meet again at Arabella's home, they resist their love at first, then embrace their perfect match. I loved all the little things Rowan does for Arabella -- her favorite cookies, notes, saving her when she gets hurt, celebrating her writing, and more. Arabella is harder to convince that love can blossom in unlikely places. But when she embraces her feelings for Rowan, she finally discovers the beautiful power of true love.

Rowan and Arabella are surrounded by such a fun cast of characters. Mr Clodwick is hilariously ridiculous. From his obsession with hauntings and ghosts to his inability to pick up on signals or wit, I laughed a lot reading about him. But also cringed a lot too. I loved Arabella's family. Her sisters are fantastic -- supporting her while also seeking the best match for her. I would love to see her younger sister as a FMC in a future book! Her parents are as wise and warm as parents should be. And I loved glimpses of the other gentlemen from the series.

The bookish elements in this story are my favorite! I loved the bookshop scenes, collecting books, discussing books, reviewing books, everything about books! They seem to have their most important conversations in the library as well. I loved when he comforts her in her hiding place. And how the love of words brings them together.

Another fantastic book from Anneka and in this series! Loving these friends all finding love so much!

A Novel Engagement is the fourth book in The Gentlemen’s Gamble multi-author series. I adored this book and I didn’t want it to end! Rowan is a gentleman, he’s a charmer and a tease, but kind and a book critic. Arabella is witty, determined, can hold a grudge, but is sweet, funny, and secretly a writer. The two are childhood nemesis’ but I think Rowan secretly liked her all along but being the “dumb boy” that he was in his youth took the teasing approach which rubbed Arabella the wrong way. I loved seeing how they reacted for their first meetings. Their arguments were just the best banter ever and I really enjoyed every minute of it. I was rooting for Rowan the whole way because like everyone else, I could see they were perfect for each other. Plus, them fighting the pull they had to each other was delightful to watch. I do have to throw in my two cents about Mr. Clodwick … he was utterly ridiculous and bizarre, and I loved watching Rowan try to prove it! A Novel Engagement is a must read if you love humor, angst, banter, a teasing gentleman, and a determined lady who are meant to be together but fight it … until they don’t.

My favorite things:
- Rowan and Arabella’s first meetings
- The bookshop and library encounters
- Miss Elizabeth’s “sweet look of death”
- Rowan’s rescue of Arabella
- I shouldn’t, but their arguments!
- The paintings and the salt at dinner
- The evening walk by torch light
- The apologies and epilogue

Favorite quotes:
"You’re a liar, Arabella Delafield. You’re more drawn to me than you dare admit. So fight all you want, but in the end, we both know I’m the only one for you.” - Rowan

"Was he allowed to wink at me? Wasn’t that against the rules for a childhood nemesis?" - Arabella

Tropes: Regency romance = childhood promise = reckless wager = enemies to more = mistaken identities = second chance = war of wills = sweet kisses

Happy reading!
