I'm a wife and a mother to a beautiful 7 year old and active 4 year old . I love to cook, but as crazy busy as my life is, the slow cooker is my life-saver! My passion for developing recipes started at a young age when my grandma taught me and my cousins to cook. During my college years, I began to experiment on my own and as I entered the work force, my creativity really developed. My second cookbook, The Gluten-Free Slow Cooker will be released on Oct. 1, but it available for presale wherever books are sold now. My first cookbook, Slow Cooker Recipes 10 Ingredients or Less and Gluten-Free is available for sale online. In addition to writing cookbooks, I teach Elementary Music, I'm a Young Living Essential Oils Educator and a blogger. Am I crazy busy...or just crazy? Yes, but I love living my life the way I'm living it!

Hope Comerford has packed a collection of make-ahead freezer meals so that busy cooks never have to despair over what they’re going to make for dinner that night or resort to a fast-food frenzy. The recipes range from overnight breakfasts to yummy meals and sandwiches. There aren’t a lot of exotic dishes in this cookbook, but, for more cooks, that’s a plus. The important point is to be sure to push out the air in the gallon-sized freezer bag to avoid freezer burn.

My semi-retired husband, who is terrified of cooking (unless he’s frying something), enthusiastically urged me to buy this book so that he could thaw the packets and put them in the slow cooker. That’s really high praise, indeed.

I have found myself in a new role as advocate for my aging parents. I was searching for ways to assist my mum with meal prep. Her flagging energy levels and diminished eyesight have impeded her cooking, something she has always loved. We discussed freezer meals and she was okay w/ the idea.
I have always been a fan of the Fix It and Forget It books so was excited when I found this one. The recipes are great. The format is clever and useful. They give you the recipe and directions for prep and then a separate set of directions for cooking. These can be printed and attached to the freezer bags. The majority of the recipes are complete when you freeze them. A small percentage have ingredients, i.e. potatoes, that don't freeze well added at the time of cooking. I'm excited to give them a whirl.
One feature I was not happy with was the promise of serving suggestions. They weren't always there. The pictures of finished dishes were luscious looking but there were no clues as to what the accompaniments were. The other feature that bothered me was the CONSTANT mention of gluten free. It became particularly annoying after 10-15 recipes. It wasn't enough to mention the recipe was gluten free but after EVERY relevant ingredient they reminded the reader to "make sure" they purchased gluten free ingredients. I think it's safe to assume that if someone is seeking out gluten free recipes they are already gluten proofing their kitchen. Don't remind me 3-4 times in the ingredient list.
Overall this is a terrific addition to your cookbook collection.

Fix it and Forget It lives up to the title: a large group of recipes collected from enthusiasts around the country that are easy to prepare en masse and then store and pull out daily to thaw and then slow cook. It's a way to do your preparation work all at one time, saving you time and cleaning later. The book is nicely presented with plenty of large photographs and clear, full page, neatly ordered recipes.

The book breaks down as follows: welcome, how the book works, guide to freezer meals, freezing tips, choosing a slow cooker, slow cooking tips. The recipes themselves are broken down a bit differently, by time of day (breakfast), food type (soups and chilis), and the mostly by meat type: chicken, turkey, beef, pork, meatless, seafood. The book has a metric equivalent measurement chartnd a clickable recipe and ingredient index in the back.

Each recipe is given a lot of room to 'breathe' since they are full page. They are followed by a full page photograph of the item. The recipe presentation is as follows: a header with the title, if it is gluten free or vegetarian, the contributor/location, serving size, prep time, cooking time, slow cooker size. A list of ingredients at time of preparation is right justified - a nice touch to keep them easy to reference. Preparation instructions are left justified and cleanly numbered in simple one-line sentences. Each recipe has a printable label to put on the freezer bags: it includes a large title, serving size, cooking time, slow cooker size, ingredients needed at time of cooking/servings, and simple numbered instructions. In all, the information is presented very neatly and very efficiently and I really like how the author made this as simple and easily referable as possible.

The recipes are varied and go far beyond the usual slow cooked stews. From omelettes to apple risotto, sweet ribs to chicken and rice. Few of the dishes actually looked like they came out of a slow cooker.

The beginning of the book has helpful tips about using a slow cooker, which one you should use, and how to prevent issues such as freezer burn or uneven cooking. Like the recipes, the information is presented very cleanly and it is very easy to find in the text any information that you want to update or double check. I am very impressed with the layout.

In all, a great book with some interesting food and more traditional staples. Cleanly presented recipes, lots of pictures, easy-to-use format, and with food you may not have thought to slow cook before. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Very rarely do I come across a cookbook with a unique twist, but Hope Comerford's Fix-it and forget-it slow cooker freezer meals : 150 make-ahead meals to save you time and money does indeed have a twist for those who like to prepare a week's worth of menus, place them in the freezer and them pop the contents into a crock pot in the morning. While some of the recipes could lend themselves to assembling that morning (e.g. I have this aversion to freezing eggs even though I know people do it all the time), there is something to be said for this technique. Each recipe has two parts: one part contains the instructions for the prep work and the second part contains the instructions for what needs to be done and/or added to the frozen contents or served with the prepared meal. The one criticism that I do have for this cook book is that it's the second part, which needs to be copied and placed on the side of the freezer bag. Unless the cook has access to a copier/printer it would make that step difficult. Otherwise, I truly wish I had this when my children were young and I was a full-time career woman with a full-time family.

This isn't a book to curl up and read. I checked it out of my library because I am a cook and have way to many cookbooks. (My Son's opinion.) My main purpose was to see if it was worth buying and using. The verdict: It was and it is being shipped to me as I write. I cannot wait to start cooking from it.

It's basic.

Which will be useful for some people.

I don't know if anything jumped out at me (maybe one? but I can't remember, so that's saying something).

I don't think any of these I could get my children to eat, that I didn't already have a recipe for.

Like others have said, it did feel quite repetitive. Like she had to really reach for that 150 mark.

I have tried a few recipes and they have been good. I have a few more that I’d like to try. I agree with others that some have ingredients that don’t freeze well so I just added them at the time of cooking.

Did anyone catch the photo of the fly in the photo of the Quick Kielbasa Soup? It is in the left hand side if the photo. On a green bean. Too funny.

I misunderstood the title. The recipes are preparation for food to go in the freezer, then taken out to be slow cooked. It is like some of the pre-prepped meals you can purchase in grocery stores. Great idea if you actually have freezer space.

I need to stop trying with these "Fix-It and Forget-It" titles. The recipes are repetitive, unimaginative, and heavy/meaty. There's hardly a vegetable in sight for three whole chapters. I'm sure this suits some people's cooking preferences, but definitely not mine.

Lots of great recipes. I liked that there were printable directions to put on the bags for when you pull it out of the freezer so you know what to do to cook it.

While the idea is great - freeze ahead slow cooker meals...the picks and the recipes seemed very 1980s dinner and I'll pass.

Found several good recipes for the whole family including BBQ chicken for sandwiches, pulled pork with Dr. Pepper, tomato basil soup, and shrimp marinara.

This is a basic book, so it's great for those who don't have a lot of experience with slow cookers and freezer meals. I appreciate that almost every recipe in it can be made gluten-free.
