Love in the Castle Library

Rate this book
Predictability and efficiency have marked Delphine DuVert’s orderly life as Castle Stewardess in the small European country of Lethersby—until she is tasked by the monarchy to hire a British researcher. Lethersby needs help solving the 100-year-old mystery of their Lost Queen, a young royal who disappeared into the night during World War I.

Delphine’s split-second decision to hire Jack Worthington, a doctoral student at the University of Oxford, has long-lasting consequences when he steps in to protect her from an angry colleague determined to ruin her life. The only catch? That protection looks like Jack posing as her beau.

Jack Worthington believes that his instinct to protect Delphine was the right one, but he’s determined to stay focused on his research for Lethersby—and keep his emotional distance after reeling from a broken heart. Yet as the clues to discovering the Lost Queen’s story unravel and the Delphine’s future hangs in the balance, both Jack and Delphine must step out in faith, choosing to trust that what God has ahead for them is worth any risk.

A gorgeous story of what it means to call God our Heavenly Father, and to be called His child.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, but absolutely LOVED this one. It had a larger element of historical fiction, drawing back to WWI to solve a mystery. I loved the forced proximity, the character depth, the bit of setting change. I just really loved all of it.

This series is an interconnected stand alone series so the books can be read as one offs. While I think the reader will get the most enjoyment out of reading book 1 first, then book 2, it is still possible to read them as stand alones.

I listened to this on audio, and the narrator did a fantastic job. Her voice acting brought the story and characters to life. If you’re looking for a romance steeped in gospel truth and Christ’s love, with a side of international mystery, this series is for you.

Ann Swindell writes with a rare attentiveness to the inner life. This story must have been written with prayerful intention, as though each page was entrusted to God before it was entrusted to the reader.

Delphine DuVert’s world is built on precision, duty, and inherited responsibility. She has learned to keep everything running smoothly, to anticipate needs before they are spoken, to serve with excellence because excellence feels like safety. Watching that identity begin to tremble is one of the most honest things this novel does. Delphine’s journey unfolds in small reckonings of the heart, where faith asks to be trusted beyond performance and beyond approval. Her growth feels earned, tender, and deeply human.

Jack Worthington enters the story with a steadiness that immediately signals something different. His faith is lived, practiced, prayed. It shows up in how he listens, how he pauses, how he asks God for wisdom rather than rushing to prove himself. What I admire most about Jack is his yieldedness. His relationship with God shapes every decision, every hesitation, every act of courage.

This is clearly Christian storytelling at its finest, where belief shapes behavior and Scripture breathes naturally through the narrative without ever feeling staged or artificial.

Love in the Castle Library understands quiet holiness. It understands ordered lives interrupted by grace. It understands what it means to walk faithfully when certainty feels fragile and obedience feels costly.
The relationship between Delphine and Jack develops with restraint and depth. Their connection grows through trust, shared purpose, and spiritual alignment. The romantic arc feels rooted in something eternal rather than emotional alone. Faith in Jesus Christ is the soil from which everything grows. Watching them learn how to trust God with unanswered questions, with past wounds, with the risk of loving well is profoundly moving.

Then there is Lethersby itself. The castle library is written with such care that it becomes a character in its own right. This space carries memory, mystery, and meaning. It holds the weight of history and the hush of prayer. The ongoing search for the lost queen adds a layer of depth that mirrors the characters’ inner journeys. What has been hidden. What has been misunderstood. What God has been quietly holding all along. The way this historical thread weaves into the present story feels purposeful and thoughtful, inviting reflection rather than rushing resolution.

One of the most beautiful facets of this story is its understanding of God’s nearness. Scripture is not quoted for effect. Prayer is not decorative. Faith is portrayed as a living relationship marked by trust, wrestling, humility, and hope. This story affirms that God is active in what we see and in what we do not yet understand. It honors the slow work of healing. It respects the complexity of family relationships. It speaks gently to anyone who has learned to measure their worth by anything other than being made in God’s image.

When I finished Love in the Castle Library, I wept. I felt seen. I was encouraged. I was reminded that faithfulness often looks ordinary, moment by moment, and that God does some of His most beautiful work while we are quietly obedient and attentive to His way and His plan, all for His glory.

This story meets the reader with quiet grace and leaves the heart cared for, strengthened, and at peace.

This book carries a sense of beautiful, joyful rest that lingers, the fruit of truth handled with care.

I read with my Bible open and my heart attentive, because stories like this invite reflection, prayer, and gratitude. I am deeply grateful for this novel.

For readers who love richly written romance anchored in Scripture, characters formed by lived and authentic faith, and stories where God’s presence is woven naturally into every page, Love in the Castle Library is a gift worth lingering over again and again, and a gift worth giving.

I received a digital ARC from the publisher and Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write a positive review and received no compensation. All thoughts and opinions shared here are my own, offered honestly and with care, with a focus on the writing, faith content, and overall reading experience.

“We can trust that God is at work in what we see and in what we don’t see. And that He sees the end from the beginning.”

Consider this my official application to become a citizen of Lethersby. I fell head over heels for this charming little country in book one of the series, Christmas at the Castle Library, and while its flaws show a bit more in this second book I still want to live there. Specifically, I want to live IN the castle with full access to its marvelous library, the kind of room that’s so much more than a collection of books – it’s an almost-sacred space where you feel the nearness of God. Books + Jesus + a castle? Yes please! The Royal Family continues to delight me in Love in the Castle Library, as much as (if not even more than) they did in its predecessor. The King & Queen and their son & daughter-in-law all exude grace and peace and kindness when they’re on the page, with enough humanness to keep them from being TOO perfect. I loved being reunited with Ellie and Mark again, but more than that I’ve been so looking forward to Delphine’s story – and Ann Swindell gives her such a wonderfully layered one!

Delphine’s identity is, in large part, wrapped up in her role as Castle Stewardess, and she’s excellent at it. When that identity is threatened though, she’ll have to lean on her faith, her friendships… and a fake romantic relationship with the British researcher she’s recently hired. (Books + Jesus + a castle + a fake dating trope?!? I am in readerly bliss, y’all!) I have a solid feeling that you will love Jack as much as I did, starting with the instant ‘rightness’ Delphine experiences when she meets him. He is such a good guy – and he loves Jesus & he’s not afraid to show emotion (this is me swooning!). And when we meet his dad? Oh how I adored Kent! Even more than I did Jack… (shh, don’t tell). Delphine and Jack may be pretending to date, but they’re not faking the very real feelings that sneak up on them, or the chemistry that flares to life with their first kiss. (Which seriously made my heart skip a beat.) But the most important thing about these two characters are their faith journeys, and Swindell weaves their emotional backstories into exquisitely touching tales of grace, redemption, and a Heavenly Father’s perfect love. And the happily-ever-after the author gives them is better than a fairy tale because God’s hand is all over it.

Oh! And I can’t forget to mention the ongoing search for answers to the WW1 disappearance of Lethersby’s Queen Alma, which we began in book one. While part of the mystery is further solved in Love in the Castle Library (to my readerly delight), there are still questions remaining – which makes me all the more eager for book three! Such a fascinating arc to tie the series together, and I loved getting more of Alma’s story!

Bottom Line: Love in the Castle Library is an absolutely charming story, rich with heart, hope, and a touch of fairy-tale grounded in real faith. Ann Swindell tenderly captures that beautiful space where romance and redemption intertwine, reminding us that God’s plans are always better than our own and that He is always at work — in what we see and in what we don’t. Delphine and Jack’s story made me smile, swoon, and even tear up a little, and I loved every page spent back in Lethersby as well as the pages spent across the pond in England. And let’s be honest, that castle library setting just makes my bookish heart ridiculously happy. Fans of gently swoony romance with spiritual depth – and anyone who secretly dreams of living in a castle library – don’t miss this one!

This is the second book in the series and I definitely recommend reading the first book before this one due to spoilers. Delphine is the Stewardess at the castle and her job is on the line after being brought up that it is supposed to be held by a man. Jack is continuing the research for what happened to Queen Alma, which was started in book one. Jack has been rejected by love and doesn’t want to make that mistake again. When Delphine is in trouble he offers to fake date her.
I really loved this story! It’s just fantastic! The author’s writing is so beautiful and vivid. I loved Delphine in book one so I’m glad she got her own story. And I think Jack was great and together they made a wonderful couple. I loved getting to know more about what happened to Queen Alma. And it looks like there is still more to know, in book 3. Can’t wait! This story has very strong Christian content! Overall, I absolutely loved it and I highly recommend!

Wow, another absolutely amazing book by Ann Swindell! Sweet romance and mystery and faith-filled! Delphine’s own father was distant, so it’s hard to trust her Heavenly Father. Her job defined her, but now? From devoted employee to fake dating to…? Jack was rejected by his ex-girlfriend…can he trust God and love again? They both grow as they spend time with each other. But there is so much to this story…mystery to solve too! After the first book, I really looked forward to this one, and it did not disappoint! It is so, so awesome!

5+ Stars❣️- I recently received a paperback copy from the author with a written message and signature inside. Then she also bookmarked and left a message where she used my first name for a staff member. She had told me about that after I read book 2. I was blown away. She said it was because of my huge support of book one. Frankly, I admit to hardly shutting up about it. I was not in a launch team; I just loved it that much!! I was really touched that she and editor took the time to message and comment to me about that. I feel very blessed.

Series: In the Castle Library, #2
Format: Kindle e-book
Challenge Prompt: Best Reads’ Holiday Bingo — “Thankful for Christian fiction”

Book #132 of 2025: Extended blissful sigh of contentment. Could that be my review? It fits!!!

When I first came across the book 1 of this series, I felt a strong pull toward it. Considering I’m not really one for royalty themes, it was odd that I couldn’t get it out of my head. I HAD to order it. I read it and became a Lethersbyrian in my book nerd life. Here we are a LONG year later and book 2 is tucked away into my completed files. I am thrilled yet sad that I have to wait ANOTHER year for book 3….

Book 2, after a tremendous debut, is typically a bit nerve-wracking. “How can it ever measure up?” However, I just had a gut feeling that Ann Swindell would suck me right back in. And she did. In spades.

There were two people whom I wanted to see featured in the series after book 1. Delphine was one of them. (Book 3 has the other!!!! *happy dance*). This novel is every bit as wonderful as the first yet it is completely its own story.

Delphine and Jack are the lead characters. I love how both their strengths and their struggles are given. They are both questioning love but in different ways. Delphine did not feel loved by her (late) father. She’s extraordinarily efficient in her work but cowers to daunting personalities such as her (late) father and a castle employee. Jack was rejected at his proposal to a woman and is summarily dumped for her ex-boyfriend. He decides that romantic love is out of the picture for at least a decade, if not for always.

Both want to be bolder in their faith and we see them go through some ups and down that draw them together as friends, possibly more. The attraction goes beyond the physical to so much more. More importantly, they each draw closer to God and grow in their faith.

Of course, the story contains so much wonderful: the castle, a royal family with a big and historical mystery, sweet romance, strong friendships and familial ties, the quaint community and traditions of Lethersby, characters from book one, etc. The library is, once again, a prominent location. (What self-respecting book nerd doesn’t like a book about libraries and bookstores?!). The three central parts of the story are the royal mystery of Queen Alma, the romance, and faith.

The mystery of why Queen Alma, who abdicated the throne and disappeared decades before, keeps the reader on their toes and enjoying the quest for discovery. I did make two very satisfying guesses in the story and love how it all came together.

Then there is the romance! (Cue the romantic ballad music!). The author builds their story with various layers that have the reader rooting for the couple. While things aren’t swimmingly perfect, there are so many touching conversations, actions, and the breath-catching swoon!

For me, as with the first book, I am so thankful that the quiet focus is faith. Some Scripture is quoted, prayers are offered, discussions occur, and growth is shown. The characters are relatable and sometimes it’s like looking in a mirror. The reader is softly, yet firmly, challenged to examine themselves and their walk with God. I honestly wish that a lot more Christian fiction novels kept this as an unapologetic focus. It’s not preachy or judgmental. It is gentle and kind, yet heartfelt and honest.

This is truly a top favourite series for me. It has the best parts of the Cinderella fairytale mixed in with some grown up Nancy Drew sleuthing. Most importantly, the story points to the Creator, the Father of all, and the One who loves us beyond any riches or treasures.

WELL DONE, Ann Swindell! I have been so blessed by this book and the one before it. I greatly anticipate the next instalment in this phenomenal series! 5+ stars!!!

***I had to edit and add this FYI…. There are some French conversational sentences within this book. After six years of French in school, I could make most of it out easily. (For those who cannot read French, Ann makes it pretty clear by the context, so don’t worry!). HOWEVER, I do *not* recommend having Alexa read this book to you. It absolutely butchers the romantic language to the point of not recognizing it! It was actually quite amusing because it was that bad! 🤪🤣😬

If I could give this 10 stars, I would. Much like when I first read Christmas in the Castle Library, I was swept up into a beautiful story of love and forgiveness and letting go. Admittedly I was a bit nervous reading this one, thinking there is no way the author could write a follow up to such a beautiful story.

But she did!

She even may have surpassed it? I don't know - all I know is going to be my FAVORITE fiction book of 2025 (funny enough, Christmas in the Castle Library was my favorite fiction of 2024!). This is a story that makes me (again!) want to pull out my Bible, lean into God, and learn to leave it all in His more than capable hands.

BEAUTIFUL story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Highly recommend!

I absolutely adored Christmas in the Castle Library—in fact, I’ve read it twice! So I was excited about this second book. It took me a bit to get into it, but I think that was this mood reader trying to read a summer set book during Christmas season! I picked it back up in January and definitely loved it 😊

What you’ll find in this story…
👑 a mystery (continued from book 1)
👑 fake dating (this trope can be weird sometimes for me, but I found it really fun and well done in this book!)
👑 Castle setting
👑 a trip to England (Oxford and the Coswalds)
👑 loving father son relationship
👑 protective MMC
👑 themes of surrender to God and God being a good Father

This isn’t a really heavy read, but it does have a lot of depth to it. I have enjoyed this series so far and look forward to book 3 coming out later this year ❤️

I ADORED the first book in this series last year, so “Love in the Castle Library” was at the top of my most anticipated 2025 reads. It did not disappoint! This story is beautifully written. From the ongoing mystery of trying to figure out what happened to Queen Alma, to the wonderfully woven faith and inspirational threads, and the relationship between Delphine and Jack, this story has it ALL! They really aren’t enough words to describe how much I adore the series and these books. This is definitely one of my top series of all time! I cannot wait to read book 3.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher, but also pre-ordered my own paperback and Audible copies. I was not required to post a positive opinion and all thoughts are my own.

“You cannot lose what you already possess.”

Where was this book when I needed it many years ago?! Now I know what all the hype is about concerning Love in the Castle Library by Ann Swindell. While I appreciated having read the previous book, Christmas in the Castle Library, I believe Love in the Castle Library could stand by itself.

This book is a Christian Princess Diaries type book, with romance, liberal Scriptures sprinkled in, and a bit of castle fairy dust.

The small country of Lethersby is still looking for answers regarding its Queen Alma who abdicated during the Great War. While characters in the last book began unraveling her secrets, many more exist. Castle steward Delphine fears for her job as a vindictive researcher looks for a way to remove her. Having succeeded her father in this role, her job, done perfectly, means everything to Delphine. The Queen once tells Delphine, “Your work does not need to be perfect to be successful.” Yet, Delphine’s need for approval from a cold, “job-first” father causes her to push herself beyond reasonableness and ability to relax.

The castle library, with its one-of-kind books, old volumes, and even a spiritual atmosphere is again a setting for romance. This time, the hero is a British WWII nurse researcher that Delphine herself hires to help Lethersby find Alma. Jack has great instincts, and isn’t afraid to stand up to the resident bully. To help Delphine save face in crisis, Jack offers to be her fake beau. We all know those arrangements lead to misunderstandings and heartaches!

The idea that touched me the most, though, was the great asset that a loving father is. And what an impediment when one has a father who is cold and distant. We are treated to see two different fathers. One blesses his child by showing how a Heavenly Father can then love. One curses his child by making the Heavenly Father’s love difficult to understand and receive.

I loved how Jack realizes he cannot solve the Lethersby mystery on his own, but frequently prays to God for help. “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” is one verse Jack remembers when the research seems to stall. So many verses are important in this story, but another one that goes along with Jack’s impossible puzzle is this verse: “It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.”

I add my voice in highly recommending this wonderful book. All the feels, and then some. And lots of Truth packaged in, as well! I can’t wait for book three!

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own ebook. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“You’re good at finding lost things, God. You see where they are. Nothing is really lost to You.” Please, Father, give me your eyes to see.” - Jack

“God was not only greater than her worries; the Bible said that He lavished his love on her as His child.” - (Delphine)

“History has been broken by men who refused to stand up to bullies. That won’t be said of the Worthingtons. We defend the helpless, protect the weak, and fight against evil in any form.” - Jack’s father

“I know what it’s like to seem very put together on the outside but still be a mess on the inside.” - Jack

“…sometimes our wounds are the very thing that heals us.” - Kent

I really liked Delphine when we first met her in Christmas in the Castle Library, so I was thrilled to see her get her own love story in this sequel, Love in the Castle Library. It was wonderful to be back in the world of Lethersby where Delphine's job at the castle is in danger due to an outdated law, and where Jack, a researcher, continues to untangle the mystery of Queen Alma's disappearance.

I love the believable way the author used the fake relationship trope, and I appreciated all the Scripture passages and moments of prayer that led Delphine to recognize God as her father and led her and Jack both to recognize their feelings for one another. There was no over-the-top drama - just lots of communication and conversation as they slowly fell in love. I also loved Jack's dad. What a wonderful supporting character!

If you like Christian romance with royal themes, definitely don't miss this book. And there was a teaser for a third book at the back of the ARC - I can't wait for another story set in this world!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5)
Love in the Castle Library is a cozy, heartwarming story that book lovers will adore. Ann Swindell brings the castle library to life with vivid descriptions and creates a tender, slow-burn romance that feels genuine. The themes of hope and grace add depth without overwhelming the narrative, making it a comforting and uplifting read.

While the pacing can feel uneven and some plot points are predictable, the charm of the setting and the warmth of the characters make up for it. This is an enjoyable story for anyone who loves books about books, second chances, and a touch of faith woven into a romantic tale.

Another delightful trip to Lethersby with more time in the library, more time with previous endearing characters and an introduction to a swoony, standup-Christian guy who is the perfect match for Delphine’s wit and Max’s deceitfulness.

Delphine’s story carries its reader through trying circumstances and scriptural guidance, including some wisdom from Jack’s father who is one obvious reason why Jack is so lovable. Beyond some twists, turns and a fake relationship, this story solves some mysteries and adds some new questions. So, be ready to read on, my friends!

This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review. I also purchased a print copy of the book.

I had been waiting for this book to come out for a year (ever since I read the first book in the series!) and it did not disappoint! This book is just as cozy and mysterious as the first one with some twists that you see coming and others that you don't! I read a lot of faith-filled fiction but this book combines faith with story in such authentic ways that it just feels real. The people, the locations, the story - it is all real. Also, there is no questionable theological assertions or assumptions (that can often happen in books like this - things like "follow your heart" which is not Biblical at all.) But the characters were real people, who really sought the Lord, and had a Biblical worldview while also being imperfect humans. It is a great read! Start with the first before moving onto this one!

Ann Swindell’s Love in the Castle Library was my favorite October read. The first novel in the In the Castle Library series was one of my favorite reads last year, and I’m pretty sure this one will be a top 10 for this year.

In this novel, we read about Delphine (the castle stewardess) and Jack, the man she hires to find out what happened to Lethersby’s Queen Alma after she abdicated the throne and mysteriously disappeared. I loved Jack’s witty banter and his sincerity. There were some lines that made me laugh out loud. Delphine is complex, struggling with her need to continue the family legacy, being professional, and yet feeling all the feels. 🥹 and of course, we see some of the beloved characters from the first novel, with a surprise ending 🎉 You will finish this book with a smile on your face, hope in your heart, and confidence in Christ’s love and sovereignty.

I absolutely adore the characters in this book and we get to have the characters from the first book return for this book. As a nurse myself I appreciate Jack’s deep respect for nurses and that he saw a gap in the study of history during war for nurses. The point of research for his degree project is highlighting the role nurses played in war throughout history. It was interesting to watch them try to solve the mystery of what happened to the queen all those years. I did not see the book ending the way it did and I thought it was a wonderful ending. In this story, Delphine and Jack both struggle with loss of a parent, one loving and one not. I love the reminder that our Heavenly Father has adopted us and loves us, “What great love the father has lavished on us.” One of my favorite quotes was about the castle library books that were written by the monarchs, “Faithful men and women who wrote to a faithful God.”

I honestly don’t think I can do this book justice with my words. I will admit to being skeptical about this sequel. Can it possibly be as good as the first book? Oh, yes it can!

This is the story of Delphine, the castle steward. We get to know her much better in this sequel and I so enjoyed the journey. There’s plenty of of mystery left to solve and the romance is perfect! You’ll be carried away again to the wonderful country of Lethersby and the beautiful castle library where dreams come true.

The gospel is a strong thread throughout and it’s not a bit preachy, it’s just beautifully woven in as the characters share and grow in their faith. Reading this book makes you want to pick up your Bible. I can’t wait for book #3!

"Love in the Castle Library" by Ann Swindell is a beautifully written, faith-filled novel. This book is very timely to me right now as I'm dealing with a lot of uncertainty in my job so as Delphine deals with her own uncertainty and looks for encouragement from Romans 8 and 1 John 3, I found myself encouraged along the way. There are so many other bible verses in this story as it unfolds and the main characters find inspiration and encouragement along the way through their own time in God's word.

This book has so many inspiring, thought-provoking passages and I found myself re-reading whole sections of the book to absorb and reflect on the messages contained in this novel. This author is truly gifted in sharing God's word in fiction in a way that's easy to understand for readers.

The continued mystery from the first book in this series moves along as those that are researching their former queen's disappearance. There's a villain trying to take Delphine's job and do what he can to destroy her in his quest for a job he thinks he deserves. Delphine also struggles as she had a poor relationship with her earthy father who passed away many years in the past, though now she's working to build a relationship with her heavenly father.

Lastly, Jack is a swoon worthy hero in this book. He has a strong Christian faith, is very protective and encouraging towards Delphine and wants the best for her. The two work together well though have a few misunderstandings when it comes to a potential personal relationship. With the cast of characters around them, they both find the encouragement they need to take a step towards one another.

I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend this one to readers of Christian fiction. The book is very faith-filled and is perfect for those that want faith-filled Christian fiction. Someone that doesn't enjoy a Christian faith message would not be the right audience for this book.

After reading Christmas in the Castle Library, I was eagerly awaiting Ann Swindell’s newest, Love in the Castle Library. Having been blown away by the first book, I was anticipating great things from its sequel. And this book met every one of my expectations. With strong threads of faith and met my soul in much needed places, a royal mystery to solve, and a toe curling romance, this book has become a fast favorite. Ann Swindell holds a storytelling ability that not only activates my imagination, but also that embeds itself into my heart. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is one I will definitely be rereading!

Continues to be a series I will let my sensitive young teen read, very clean romance filled with reminders of God's truth.
