Horned Holidays #5

A Klaus Encounter

Rate this book
Can a cold alien warrior and a struggling woman give a grieving boy the one gift he needs most—a family?

When Talia moves to an isolated village to care for her angry, grieving nephew Theo, she quickly discovers that her city-based skills are useless. Her efforts to reach her nephew and save his home are failing. The last thing she needs is another problem, but when she finds a huge, horned alien unconscious in the snow, she’s determined to save him.

Commander Klausan D'Kringar's mission has come to an ignominious end. Crashed, injured, and alone, his only goal is survival. But when he wakes up in a primitive cellar, tended to by a fierce, captivating female, his priorities begin to shift. Her compassion is irrational, her living situation is unacceptable, and the unexpected attraction between them is completely outside his experience. Logic dictates he should escape, but a new, protective instinct demands he stay.

As they work together to ease Theo’s sorrow, an unforeseen bond begins to grow between the three of them. And when they attract the wrong kind of attention, Klausan will do whatever it takes to protect his new family.

A sweet and steamy holiday tale featuring a grieving boy, a loyal alien reindeer, a heroine who rediscovers her purpose, and a hero who learns that sometimes the most logical choice of all is to follow his heart. (Intended for mature audiences.)

2.5 stars. Why TF would you stay in a village where all but FIVE of the people living there were willing to kill you, your nephew and your alien bf to ‘save the village from witchcraft’?!?!? I don’t care if the ring leader left months later. I wouldn’t trust the safety of my family to any of these people ever again.

Perfect steamy reading for the winter solstice. Honey Phillips has spun a romance between an alien warrior crash-landed in a forest and a grieving woman doing the best she can raising her orphaned nephew while trying to maintain a homestead and not starving over the long winter.

Talia and her nephew stumble across the very large, wounded, and obsidian-horned unconscious alien while foraging in the woods. They manage to drag him back to their home where Talia nurses him back to health.

A grateful Klaus helps Talia and her nephew out while his ship is repairing itself. The process takes just over ten weeks, and in the meantime Talia and Klaus come to regard one another highly. Klaus helps Talia make toys out of wood scraps and Talia demonstrates compassion, kindness, and generosity to Klaus, concepts not required nor taught in his home planet.

When ignorance and folkloric conspiracies threaten the pair’s fragile bond, will terror or love win out?

I received an advance reader copy from the author and booksprout, and I’m sharing my honest review.

Another Tandroki commander has learned first hand how the planet K.R.S. Three likes to grab spaceships and make them forcibly land on it. And by forcibly land, I mean crash. Because, yup, Klaus most certainly crash landed.

Fortunately for Klaus, Talia and her nephew stumble over him (not literally) and bring him back to their home to give him a chance to heal. Talia and Theo are both grieving and struggling to find their centers again in the aftermath of Theo's parents' deaths and caring for Klaus is a distraction they sorely need. Even if his presence cuts into their winter supplies. Even if they have to keep him a secret from the superstitious town folk.

Honestly, Klaus and Talia have a lot of strikes against them. But his presence makes Theo shake off his grief for the first time since his parents died and reminds Talia that some things are worth fighting for. Although both she and Klaus are clear that this thing between them is temporary since he's planning on heading back to his home world once his ship is repaired (I honestly don't know if the planetary anomalies will allow him to leave, but he's holding onto the idea that he'll be heading home once repairs are completed) and she's resigned to that.

A weathered homestead on a primitive planet, toys to brighten the darkest time of the year, a rigid alien commander who has to accept that what his father expects from him isn't what he wants out of his life, and a lady who is struggling to survive through her grief and feelings of inadequacy, but who definitely knows a good male when she finds him. I do enjoy these uptight commanders unraveling for their special someone and the families they gather around them.

Honey Phillips is such an odd author. Despite my reluctance to go back to her work, some premises seem to draw me in and I'm a sucker for a found family storyline. And that's what these books are all about, found families during the holidays. So of course I ended up enjoying them.

I wanted something fun and festive to read for the holidays and this was the pick me up I needed, these books are lightweight with not too much drama to complicate things. In a word, fluff. And there's nothing wrong with that.

K.R.S. Three is some sort of black hole, anyone who approaches this planet crashes and is left stranded, mostly Tandroki warriors it seems. But thankfully they all find human women to love and settle down with. The humans of this planet are stuck in a more primitive time where glass is a commodity and moving gears are seen as magic. The alien men are from a highly advanced sterile environment where emotions need to be tempered and reproduction is artificial. But somehow it all works out for everyone involved.

The only outlier is Yede from book four. It's clear he's not Tandroki, but it's never exactly specified what he is other than very furry and from a race that was recently at war. The Knotty Clause is probably my least favorite book for being so different from the others and for having a title that doesn't make a lot of sense.

A Klaus Encounter was my favorite. It's the one I mistakenly read first ad is the longest of these books. It gives more time for the relationship to build and had very realistic stakes with the worry of people being scared and rioting.

Despite how i feel about other books she's written, I hope that Honey Phillips continues her Horned Holidays series. They're fun and harmless and we could always use more cheer in the holidays.

‘A Klaus encounter’ is the fifth book in the ‘Horned holidays’ series, but you don’t need to read the other books to read this one. It can be read as a standalone.

This is a sweet winter story about an alien man who has learned from his race that emotions are dangerous and that you must think rationally about everything. He meets a human woman who follows her heart, even when her feelings gets hurt and a young boy who has lost his parents and is grieving. This was a story about lost, hope and love.

I really liked the story. It was entertaining to watch Klausan (Klaus) transform from a rational man into someone who listened to his heart. From the beginning, it was clear that he wasn’t a cold, insensitive man, he just didn’t know how to express his emotions. Luckily, Talia and Theo accepted him for who he was. Talia was a strong woman but even strong women sometimes need help. She left her old life behind when her younger sister and husband died. She decided to not take her nephew, Theo, away from the only home he knew. I admire her for that, it wasn’t an easy decision, especially since she’s used to living and working in the city. But she loved Theo very much. It was lovely to see her find a new way to support her family and how Klaus helped her with her new project. Both found a new purpose in life, a new joy.

Theo was a ten year old boy who was hurting and took his pain out on his aunt. It’s understandable but it still hurt my heart. I was so happy that Klaus’s arrival brought new emotions and healing to Theo’s heart. The three of them were great for each other. The chemistry between Talia and Klaus was immense, but it was a new feeling for both. Neither had any experience with sex. But together they figured it out.

The relationship with the villagers was difficult. Some people were kind, but others were unfriendly. It had me thinking of a medieval village where people were very superstition and women were murdered as witches. It made me sad that Talia, Klaus and Theo almost lost their home because of this. But thankfully, everything turned out well.

The story was told from both POV’s. It was wonderful to see how the three characters grew and slowly became a family. I enjoyed the story very much. It was sweet, emotional and steamy.
I will definitely read the other stories in this series.

Heather's Notes
I usually really enjoy these stories, but for some reason I didn't like this one as much as the others. Maybe it was because I read it after Christmas? Still it was not a bad story, I liked Klausan. I thought the way he spoke was so cute. I liked Talia and Thea, I just didn't get caught up in the story like I usually do. I also was very disappointed at the end, when he didn't met the others that were on the planet with him.

“I find your proximity…” He paused, as if searching for the right word. “Disrupting.”
“Disrupting.” Not attractive, not appealing, but disrupting. Like a malfunction. “I’m sorry.”
“Do not apologize.” His hand lifted, hovering near her face, not quite touching. “It is not an unpleasant disruption.”
“I am not accustomed to feeling gratitude. It is… disrupting.”
A smile tugged at her lips despite everything. “Seems we’re both disrupted then.”

I loved this book. It was such a sweet holiday romance full of family, found family, grieving, healing, and love. Great world building and wonderful characters. I loved Talia, Klausan, and little Theo. This story sucked me in from the very start. Ten-year-old Theo sad, upset, and rebelling after his parents' deaths. Talia who left her life behind to take care of her nephew in his own home, but was struggling to maintain the homestead alone. And Klaus who was unhappy with his fathers' marriage arrangement for him when he crash-landed on a primitive and supposedly uninhabited planet. Theo and Talia found him and worked together to bring him back to their home.

I liked the strengthening of the relationship and bond between Talia and Theo over the course of the book. I couldn't help but admire the way she steps up for family in her life- raising her sister when their parents died and working hard to make ends meet, and now raising her sister's orphaned son. She was grieving too, but wanted so badly to take care of Theo and give him all he needed.

I really liked how Talia and Klaus interacted in the beginning with the language barrier and culture clash. How the grew to understand each other better and grow a little themselves. This was such a sweet romance. I was hooked. 5 stars

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Klaus Encounter is a surprisingly tender and heartfelt sci-fi holiday romance that blends alien warrior intensity with found family warmth. Honey Phillips delivers a story that feels cozy and emotional while still keeping the otherworldly edge that makes the Horned Holidays series so fun.

Talia is a strong, compassionate heroine doing her best in an impossible situation. Her love and determination to help her grieving nephew, Theo, grounds the story emotionally and gives every decision real weight. Theo’s sorrow is handled with sensitivity, making his healing journey one of the most touching parts of the book.

Klausan D’Kringar is the perfect contrast—cold, logical, and duty-driven, yet slowly undone by human kindness. Watching his survival instincts shift into protectiveness and devotion is deeply satisfying, especially as his bond with Theo develops alongside his growing connection to Talia. His struggle between logic and emotion makes him an instantly lovable alien hero.

The found-family dynamic is the true heart of this story. What begins as an act of survival blossoms into something warm, hopeful, and beautifully domestic—set against snowy isolation and quiet holiday magic. When danger appears, Klausan’s fierce loyalty seals the emotional payoff.

If you enjoy sci-fi romance with alien warriors, protective instincts, emotional healing, and a strong found-family theme wrapped in holiday charm, A Klaus Encounter is a delightful and deeply satisfying seasonal read. 🎄👽✨.

"...companionship that demanded nothing but gave everything."

When Klaus' ship crashes he discovers a world utterly and completely different than the one on which he was raised. A place where nature grows wild, where communities are small, and logic doesn't guide and dictate every individual's every action.

Talia is doing the best she can. She may fear it isn't enough, but it is everything she has to give, and there are times when she wants to give up, but she doesn't, because her young nephew is depending on her, and she is determined not to let him down. When Klaus crashes into their lives he brings something new, and whether he means to or not, he brings hope to the little boy Talia is dedicating her life to raising.

This done in one story contains all the best aspects of the winter season, an all to relatable "villain" of the piece, and a small community that operates like so many each of us has experienced in our own lives. A place where rumors travel at the speed of light. Where people are cautious, particularly with outsiders, and where being different can be easy to fear when it makes you stand out in a way others can't relate to.

I loved the ending of this story, it gave me the holiday cheer and warmth I wanted, and delivered the best of smalltown, frontier life.

Fantastic!

This was so worth the wait. I thought Talia, was a brave woman. Arriving in a run down farm, to a grieving, and hostile, resentful nephew and no real idea what to do. She's from the city, and really doesn't know how to live in a farm. When she has to go out in the snow to chase after Theo, they come across an injured being like they never seen before. Klaus comes from a planet that requires a clinical conception, and the woman don't raise their offspring. Fathers take over, and then the child is sent to military schools, to be trained and raised in that structured background. At least the male children are. Klaus gains back his health, and slowly becomes involved with their daily lives. She learns to use his tools to make toys from the watchmaker skills she gained working in the city. With her imagination, and drawing skills she is able to create clockwork movement toys, that she is able to sell, or trade for supplies they need to get through the winter. I really loved how gradually she is able to get passed the one man who is spreading fear among the villagers and form their own family. Such a sweet ending, but I really hoped to see what happens all the way passed 9 months. Maybe it will be in the next book. Trish. A.

This is an exciting sci-fi holiday romance. It’s part of the Horned Holidays series and can be read as a standalone.

Human FMC Talia recently moved to a small settlement to take care of her young nephew, Theo, after her sister and brother-in-law tragically died. Theo is grieving and struggling, and after an argument he runs off into the snow. When Talia goes after him, she not only finds Theo but also a strange male, Tandroki alien Commander MMC Klausan, or Klaus. She takes in the fallen warrior and nurses him back to health. He’s stranded on the planet while repairing his ship, but quickly realizes that might not be such a bad thing.

I really enjoyed this sweet, steamy story. I liked the subtle allusions to Santa Claus, from the MMC’s name to the creation, and disruption of toys. Talia was a charming, complex character who was easy to root for.

Overall, this was a fun holiday read. I love all of the Horned Holidays books and hope Phillips continues the tradition of releasing a new one each year for the holidays.

A Klaus Encounter is the fifth book of the author’s Horned Holidays series and a story that will touch on many emotions as events play out for MFC Talia who has moved away from the city to a remote village in the mountains to care for her nephew who is grieving the loss of both his parents, her sister and brother-in-law.
As she is struggling to ease him through the pain and maintain his parents homestead another problem finds her, alien Commander Klausan D’Kringar who Theo comes across wounded, outside in the winter snow.
The Commander had been on an exploratory mission when he’d crashed, and soon wakes in pain having his wounds being taken care of by a strange female.
So enjoyed this wonderful holiday story as the presence of Klaus begins to heal Theo’s pain as well as sparking a connection with Talia. Adversity they will face but with wonderful writing, perfectly crafted characters, personal vulnerability, family dynamics, sweetness, and spice a most engaging, and heartwarming holiday read was crafted. HEA.

What An Encounter!

Talia has been trying to raise her nephew, Theo since her sister and brother-in-law died, but he is angry and isn't making that easy. She also is trying to do that while working a farm and she has no idea how to do that, especially alone. When Talia and Theo come across an injured alien whose ship crashed in the woods, they take him home and treat his wounds. Klaus is a Tandroki warrior and is very regimented and analytical which makes this story that much funnier and oh so cute. I smirked and chuckled through quite a few of their conversations. The story gives a nod to Santa and Christmas with of course his name, the making of toys, and the longest night. The climax of the story at the end due to fear from the villagers had me holding my breath and wondering how that was going to work out. I was sad to see the story end because I wanted to spend more time with these characters. What a great story by a fantastic author!

There is so much to love about this wonderful story of discovery. I loved how Talia was able to show Klaus that not everything has to have logic. His culture was all about symmetry and logic, no emotions, they only complicated everything.
I loved their banter. And his " that is acceptable" or "adequate" when in reality it was perfect.
He learned from her kindness. It was not a weakness.
Loved how she slowly showed Klaus what life was, or could be.
I also loved how they , together, along with a few townsfolk dealt with Jorund.
The empirical research was especially fun to read.
Klaus also helped with her nephew Theo. It was heartwarming how patient he was with him and how he was able to help him and Talia with their grief and farm.
The flow was very good , steam to the eventual romance. Endearing . And the HEA for them- well deserved.

A Klaus Encounter by Honey Phillips is a sweet holiday story. Talia is raising her nephew Theo following the death of her sister and BIL. He's runs away and she finds him out in the snow looking at a large alien male. They manage to drag him back to the homestead and heal him over the next few days. When he assesses the space craft, he tells her they have a couple months before it is fixed. They decide to use the time to have a relationship before he must rejoin his people. But Talua and Theo don't have enough food to get through winter and the homestead needs repair. Together they design and build toys to sell and trade in time for the Longest Night celebration. A few villagers try to run off Klaus, but he shows them he is there for good and wins most over. Wonderful story.

Talia is a resilient human woman doing her best to care for her grieving, orphaned nephew, when they discover the massive, injured alien warrior, Klausan D’Kringar (Klaus), in the forest.
Klaus is initially cold, logical, and driven by duty, but Talia's compassion and determination break through his cultural programming to reveal the lonely male beneath.

I enjoyed Klaus's journey from stoic warrior to fiercely protective guardian and devoted partner. I loved how he saw Talia as a person with the courage to have compassion even when times are tough, and how she was able to see him in a way his culture would never allow. I found their romance incredibly sweet and heartwarming.

A Klaus Encounter is a fantastic read for anyone looking for a story about healing emotional wounds, creating a family where you least expect it, and finding real love against the odds.

Sometimes when all is lost you are sent a light in the storm.

A beautifully written and heartfelt storytelling about becoming a family in the midst of tragedy. I couldn’t put it down and shed a few tears - first in sadness and then in joy. Thalia and her orphaned nephew Theo are struggling to survive after his parents die and Thalia comes to take care of him. Into their lives comes Klausan, an alien Tandroki warrior. Klaus is a standup male who surprises himself by the feelings he “develops” for both of them. What a unique intricate plot, which housed a really good story and great character interaction. Sit back and enjoy the love and spice this books brings for the holiday season 🎁 🌲.

Love vs Logic

Talia is the kindest, most caring human around. She gives up everything she knows to care for her nephew in the isolated community he has been raised in when his parents die. The two of them rescue Klaus, a wounded alien, whose life is based on logic, not emotions. Talia’s kindness and giving nature start to awaken feelings in Klaus that are foreign.

I had to read this book in one sitting to find out what happens. I loved the Santa themes with toys and reindeer as a background. There was also conflict with the villagers that added to the plot and needed resolving but the main theme was individual growth as characters.

Thank goodness Love beats all!!!

What an impeccable story this is. The storyline is charismatic on so many levels. It's emotional and tragic. The empathy that the female lead ( Talia) shows is endearing and inspiring.

Honey delivered a poignant story that is charming and irresistible. The compassionate way she wrote her characters and storyline is captivating. A heartwarming story to see you through the holiday season.

A story filled with love and a HEA 🔥💜.

“A Klaus Encounter” by Honey Phillips

-A warm, steamy sci-fi holiday romance filled with discovery and hope. I received a free copy and am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.

Talia’s quiet, winter-bound life changes when she rescues Klaus, the wounded alien in her snow-covered woods. Their growing bond blends kindness, logic, and slow-building heat as he heals her heart and her home. Theo’s grief, local fear, and old myths threaten them, but compassion proves stronger than superstition. Interesting characters and storyline create a great read.

I was lucky enough to snag an ARC of this book. And if you've ever read a review by me, you know I love books by Honey Phillips. She knows what writing alien hunks is all about! This story not only had an alien hunk (🔥🔥🔥) but also a great moral reminder woven through and discussed in depth. That lesson is one the world really needs right now. Just because a person is different doesn't make them wrong, or dangerous, or deserving of expulsion or death. Additionally, reason and logic can take you so far, but love and kindness are the answer to most of our problems. Excellent story!

This was just “ok” for me. The first 50% felt so slow. It was a build-up, but still a little too slow. I actually had a hard time staying focused with this story. It’s unusual for me since ai have read a lot of this author’s works, and loved every one of them. There’s a good message about love over fear, but you don’t truly get a lot of this until the last half. There isn‘t even much village interaction until halfway. I would still read the next one.

An Alien and a Human

She found him wounded and then found his ship. She and her nephew got him to their root cellar to heal. After a fee days, he had healed good enough to go back to his ship, but had to wait 73 days before the nanobots could fix it. As he helped.around the house, he noticed she had a talent for making moving items. She made toys for the children with his help while fighting their attraction to each other. An altercation with some townfolk had him acknowledging his feelings for her and they got their HEA.

Adaptation

3.5 stars
Klaus is an alien who has been taught to think logically and smother emotions. He soon learns that emotions are not a weakness nor something to fear.
The story was enjoyable. It would have been nice if Klaus didn't speak like a cyborg, unlike his fellow stranded aliens from the previous books. I was a little disappointed with the end of the epilogue. This book doesn't tie together with the previous ones, that take place on this planet. Also, there was too much repetitiveness.

Loved this!

Klaus is a great addition to this series of Horned Holidays. Talia was struggling so much with the homestead and the loss of her sister, that finding Klaus in the snow seemed to be just one more impossible hurdle in her life. Helping him definitely wasn't logical, but it was very much Talia. I loved how logical Klaus was and how much he brings to her life. Fighting the villagers with kindness and compassion and wonder against their claims of magic and witchcraft, showed just how a non-violent attitude can win the day. Beautiful story with a great ending.

Shipwreck

A struggling Aunt trying to survive on a farm her sister and brother-in-law were homesteading and keep her nephew alive through winter with not enough food stores. While out searching her property she finds the survivor of the space ship which was beyond her knowledge to repair. They take him home hide him and use their short supply of food to help him get better.
Hiding him from the village because she fears their reaction to someone different from themselves. Can the village learn the different is not evil? Good Adult Read.

I’ve enjoyed this series as a whole, but this installment is my favorite yet. They are standalones and can be read as such and in any order. The basic premise is Krampus like aliens crash landing on a primitive-ish earth like planet.
This particular one was a mix of Krampus and Spock and Santa myths in a way that I never would have put together but worked SO WELL. Also, there was some great statements on the insidiousness of mob mentality and xenophobia and all that great stuff that we could ALL stand to learn from.
