I loved the first two book and the cliffhangers they ended on but this one has left me confused and disappointed. You need to read the first two book, this one wont make sense otherwise. This is a paranormal why choose mixed with Groundhog Day.
Anyone familiar with the first two books knows the story, Avalon Halherd, daughter of the ninth line is conscripted to train at Boellium college as a solider. Each line, 1-12 lives in a different part of Ebrus, and each have their own magical abilities, except the further down the lines you go the weaker the magic becomes and the poorer and less powerful that line is. As a member of the ninth Avalon has very little magic, once able to see the future that ability has all but died out.
As this is the third time she has entered the college (although that is information we the reader, not Avalon knows as her memory gets wiped) she is once again inexplicably drawn to Vox, heir of the first line, as well as Hayle, heir of the third. But doesnt know why. In the first two books Hayle is killed in one, Vox at the end of the other. So third time is the charm, right?
But which man will she choose and can they be saved this time. Vox as first heir has no future with Avalon, she is too lowly and he will have to marry as his father dictates. And Hayle declares she is his soul tie or soul mate, so the decision is clear, except it isnt. Avalon loves them both. But with looming political strife and upheaval ahead can she save them both this time?
Spoiler alert ****
The ending confused me, it finished so abruptly. Avalon is made aware of her ability in the final pages and uses it, but it leaves more questions than answers. It just felt rushed and I felt left up in the air. And the author introduced a major new character and twist right at the end but this wasnt developed. I know she stated she is working on new books focusing on this new character but this story ended just like that.
And she stated this the final novel in the ninth line series. So we dont know what happens with Avalon, Vox and Hayle going forward. But if you join the author's Patreon you can get exclusive access, like wtf? This is a shoddy way to treat loyal readers imo.
It maybe that Avalon and co will feature heavily in the future books but I just feel like I've been tricked into enjoying a series that doesnt appear to have a conclusion. The rest of the book is ok, there's a bit of MFM action but that abrupt ending ruined it for me.
