My Daughter's Boyfriend #1

Min dotters pojkvän

Rate this book

A fast-paced🍿listen that I binged and cringed in a weekend!

I enjoyed this entertaining story of Dawn and her daughter, Ellie. When Ellie has an online romance, Dawn's red flags start cropping up at lightening speed! 🚩🚩I really liked both of them, but their choices were not the best. Ellie was 25, but acted more like a teen and her poor mom couldn't relax (ever). I could feel her gray hairs coming in!

Me : "No, no don't do that!" "No, no don't go there!" No, what are you thinking"? "Don't relax yet Dawn!"

Predictable, but quick and twisty with the alarm bells blasting throughout! 🔔

Thanks NG for the audiobook! 6hrs/42min , great narration from Tamsin Kennard and Harrie Dobby

I typically love an occasional popcorn thriller but sadly, this is not one I enjoyed. The author is churning out books at a rapid pace, and perhaps needs to slow down and get his mojo back.

There was a lot of telling, very little showing. It was obvious from the beginning where this was going as literally every plot point was telegraphed. The one surprise twist in the epilogue wasn't enough to save this story. It was too little, too late.

The only ones who had no idea what was happening in this story were the two idiotic main characters, a mother and daughter. If a character is stupid, they'd better be sweetly naive and endearing. These two are neither. They are too stupid and annoying to survive and are strong contenders for the Darwin Award.

Genre ~ psychological fiction
Series ~ My Daughter's Boyfriend #1
Others in the series ~ My Daughter's Husband
Publication date ~ June 3, 2023
Page Count ~ 249
Audio length ~ 6 hours 34 minutes
Narrators ~ Tamsin Kennard, Harrie Dobby
POV ~ dual 1st person
Featuring ~ dumb choices

Mom, Dawn & daughter, Ellie have been on their own since the untimely death of their husband/father. They clash at times as mothers and daughters do.

Ellie acts way younger than her 24 years with the choices she makes, especially that of finding a boyfriend online in a different country. I've never been to the UK, but surely there are some eligible lookers over there. Even Dawn doesn't make the best choices. Maybe it was fine that they head to the states to meet Daryl and his father, Harvey, but why on earth would they stay in the house with these strangers?? And going snooping around, too, just calls for disaster.

Despite the dumb choices I really liked this one. Even though there's some predictability, it's fast paced with edge of your seat moments. This book makes me have to reiterate to my teenager to make smart choices.

Narration notes ~ overall they both did a fine job. I'm happy there were 2 and their voices were age appropriate. I like that they attempted to do American accents for the men.

I actually read the sequel to this book first, so I knew the outcome. I still wanted to know how it came to that however, and it certainly was an energy-fueled way to get there. I had the same misgivings in this as in the sequel however, mainly the main characters. Especially Ellie, a very naive woman who made so many eye-rolling choices, but also her mother who didn’t connect the dots before it was almost too late. With her paranoia it’s strange that she didn’t consider some possibilities sooner, so that was frustrating.

How well do you know someone you meet online?

Dawn's daughter, Ellie met a man online and knows that he is the one for her. When Ellie tells her mother that she has a new boyfriend, Dawn is happy for her but grows concerned when Ellie informs her that they have never met in person. Daryl, the man of Ellie's dreams, lives in Los Angeles and has invited Ellie to come meet him and his father. Dawn and Ellie arrive in Los Angeles, and everything appears great until a discovery is made in his basement that proves that Daryl has been lying from the very start....

I have enjoyed every book that I have read by Daniel Hurst and this one was no exception. I am always drawn into Hurst's books. His storylines are gripping, thought provoking, full of twists and shocking reveals. Traveling from one country to another to meet someone is a big step. Hurst captures the excitement of taking that leap. He also captures the feeling of something not feeling right.

I listened to the audiobook and thought it was very well done. I was drawn in from the very beginning. I wanted to know what was going to happen and how things were going to turn out. This was a fast read, and I didn't want to put this down.

Gripping, shocking, and well written!

The brains and common sense have left the building!

I really don't know what happened to Mr Hurst. It seems his books have declined steadily and I think perhaps it is the speed with which they are coming out. Strike while the iron is hot I guess is the philosophy.

These women, mother and daughter, have little or no sense. When the daughter falls head over heels for an American man living in LA with his father, one has to wonder. Then again Ellie lives with her mom and is a brat of the highest order. At any rate, this love fest is conducted over face time and when Ellie consents to going to meet her love of her life interest, her mom goes along as protection.

The brainless ones arrive in LA and stay at Daryl's dad house where a secret is discovered in the basement. Bad news awaits, but these ladies believe in the benefit of the doubt even when the doubt is smacking them between the running lights.

At any rate, murder and mayhem ensue as predicted and the ladies are in grave danger. (no surprise there)

Do they escape and why would anyone with two cells of a brain get involved in this? It was sheer foolery and these ladies were the president and vice president of the fools club of England!

Jan and I were gobsmacked over how bad this was and though I seldom give a one star rating, this one wound up front and center. No recommendation for this one but I guess you got that!

This is another addictive thriller from Daniel Hurst. Although some of the plot was predictable, it didn’t hinder my enjoyment. It’s fast-paced and extremely entertaining. I listened to the audiobook and the narrators perfectly brought the characters to life. The daughter’s narration portrayed naivety, and a lack of life experience, while the mother’s narration exhibited a life full of life lessons. This was a quick listen and I was gripped every minute. I highly recommend this absorbing thriller. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Five eye-rolling stars!

Daniel Hurst takes "online love" to exciting new levels with this twisty and intriguing relationship drama.

Is it possible to fall in love with someone you chat with online without physically meeting them?

Ellie quickly becomes enamored with Daryl, a guy she has "met" online.

1) PROBLEM #1
Daryl lives in Los Angeles and Ellie lives in the UK.

2) PROBLEM #2
Ellie knows NOTHING about Daryl and when she travels with her mother to meet Daryl, that is when the book's beguiling revelations and twists begin.

Overall, the book was an unputdownable, fast-paced, and fun read even though it was replete with eye-rolling moments.

I listened to the full-cast audiobook read by Harrie Dobby and Tamsin Kennard.

Both narrators did an over-the-top job with the narration.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I am a HUGE Daniel Hurst fan and always look forward to his new releases.

A very, very smooth thriller. This wasn't anything necessarily groundbreaking or overly unsettling, but it was very effective at what it set out to attain. I liked the strained relationship of Dawn and Ellie, and how the entire story revolved around that. Whether it was suspicions about Harvey and Daryl or just dealing with each other during their normal day-t0-day routine, it added tons of depth to the individual characters and the overall group dynamic. The plot was fairly easy to piece together, too, but don't let those other reviews dissuade you from this book. It was all still very enjoyable and had a great flow, smooth transitions from person to person, a sensible and engaging plot progression, and a great ending, too. Daniel Hurst is a proven, top notch author, and this is just another great example of his abilities.

The narration of this book was very good. It added the book an extra star.

As for the book itself... The mother is working hard to provide for a daughter who acts as a true brat. And agreeing to go to America only after one video call of the daughter with the boy that she met on the Internet? I know there are different cases when people meet on the Internet and start relationships that are successful. But after one single video call?

The main characters from both sides look undeveloped and don't earn any sympathy. The book seems rushed and looks like written by somebody else and not by Daniel Hurst whose books I usually like.

Online Dating, the rules of engagement...

Ellie and Daryl meet through the vast realm of the internet. However, a geographical obstacle stands in their way, with Ellie residing in London and Daryl in Los Angeles. Undeterred by the distance, they devise a plan to meet in person, but Ellie's mother insists on accompanying her, unwilling to let her venture abroad unaccompanied.

Once in Los Angeles, they stay with Daryl and his father. However, as the days unfold, Ellie's mother begins to stumble upon hidden truths and witnesses unsettling occurrences that stir her unease. The narration is really good.

I find myself completely captivated. A remarkable ability to provoke thought and surprise with unexpected twists. Hurst's brilliance shines through as he masterfully craft an addictive and psychologically thrilling experience. This book does not disappoint. The characters are meticulously developed, drawing us into their intense world. I found Ellie's character quite unappealing as she consistently portrayed herself as a spoiled brat, displaying disrespectful behavior towards her mother on several occasions. Without a doubt, I adored this book and eagerly anticipate diving into the author's next masterpiece.

Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to listed and review this audiobook.

Dawn is very uncertain when her daughter Ellie declares that she is in love. At the age of 24, her daughter is certainly a old enough to live her own life, but with Dawn and Ellie living in the UK and Ellie’s boyfriend, living in the US, Dawn is very nervous that Ellie wants to meet him in person Dawn agrees to let Ellie meet the young man, who is named Daryl, but only if she accompanies her so Dawn and Ellie head to LA for a week.

While the young couple do seem to be quite in love, Dawn’s uncertainty only grows after meeting Daryl and his charming father. After a shocking discovery, Dawn has Ellie pack her bags. Their vacation is over, but the drama that has suddenly become part of their lives is only just beginning.

This ARC came across really well as an audiobook. The story itself was quite intense and with the dual narration of two excellent voice actors, the intrigue only grew. There were some great surprise twists and a really shocking ending.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

No introduction needed to this author as many of you read and love his books and equally know what to expect,a good story…
This one is set mostly in L.A. which is great and deals with a single parent going to visit her daughters new boyfriend, meeting him and his adad and what she discovers and after this discovery what it leads to
It is the authors classic fayre and as always deals with what happens to an ordinary person/family when unexpectedly they are thrust into the unordinary….and he does it so well, the book pulls you in to keep reading and to find out what has really happened,as always there is the twisty ending and you are left knowing you have read a Daniel Hurst book, satisfied and wanting the next one ( which lets face it is probably only a few weeks away 😎😀 )

My Daughters Boyfriend
By: Daniel Hurst
5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hurst has quickly become a favorite of mine after I have read and loved several of his psychological thrillers.
🛩️
An incredibly addictive and heart pounding thriller. Ellie is in England and has been having an online relationship with Daryl who lives in Los Angeles. He invites her to his home and Ellie’s mom Dawn agrees as long as she can come too.
🛩️
Ellie and her mom are looking forward to their stay with Daryl and his dad, Harvey for a week. They are very inviting and things go smoothly at first.
🛩️
Daryl takes Ellie out for the day and her mom is really worried as she has had no contact with her. They are headed out of the city….Dawn has discovered something they are both hiding.
🛩️
They say you should always trust your instinct! How can things go so horrible wrong so fast! A tangled web of lies can lead to something you never expected. Blown away by this INTENSE ending!
🛩️

I enjoy Daniel Hurst’s novels. They are always twisty, with characters you love to hate and well written. This one was a little predictable, and not as twisty as his previous novels have been, but still good.

That said, this is a fun, popcorn thriller with wonderful audio narration. We follow Dawn and her daughter Ellie as the latter embarks on an online romance. There’s lots of foreshadowing and secrets held. It’s an easy quick read that’s overall quite satisfying. Releases 3 June 2023.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a complimentary advanced listening copy. I cant’t wait to see what Daniel Hurst brings out next.

This was the gift that just kept on giving! A perfect guilty pleasure read for the weekend or on holiday.

Widowed Dawn has adult daughter Ellie living with her. She loves her dearly but she'd like to see her move forward like her friends' kids, maybe get married or start a family. Get a steadier job.

Be careful what you wish for, Dawn! Ellie has met an American guy online and is wanting to go from London Fog to the City of Angels. Refusing to let her daughter go that far alone, Dawn books a ticket too and they both stay at his home with his father.

They get along well but a few things have them on edge. Will they be able to get back home? What's next?

This was a fast and fun read. It was absolutely outlandish but I loved it anyway, although it could be repetitive at times. I didn't really get the parent/child dynamic in either set. Nothing they did made sense to me and the kids felt a lot younger than mid 20's(see, I called them kids).

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to listen and review. The narration was fantastic.

I did enjoy this and wanted to read to the end; but I guessed the twist very early on and I felt like the book gave away the twist in the middle too so it was more of a plodder of a read than a thriller. However, I will read the second one and see!

I also think, sometimes when you’ve read a few excellent books, you can mark harsher on the next few books!

My only positive comment is that the narrators did a descent job.
The story was implausible to the extreme. The characters were unrealistic particularly the daughter who was described as in her twenties but acted like a spoilt young teenage brat. There were inconsistencies throughout. One minute the daughter had no friends and then a bit later on she was mentioning all her friends. Another inconsistency was in how the mother initially described her daughter to us but then we met her and nothing matched. So sorry but I’m having to be generous to give this one even two stars.

Ugh. This book started off strong with a great premise, and then completely fell apart after the first quarter.

It's fast paced, but you see the supposed twists coming a mile away, and there's no redeeming characters to cheer on.

Very much do not recommend.

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

The narration on this audiobook fit perfectly for the characters. It was a on the shorter side and very easy to listen to in a single sitting! The book itself felt a little lacking to me. I’m not sure if it’s because I thought there would be more to the story or just that it felt too predictable. I really liked the premise, just wished for some more backstory on all of the characters and maybe a few more chapters at the end, to see the direction the characters were headed.

The whole book was really predictable. I guessed it pretty early, nothing special, just a normal serial killer story. Or that's what I thought? What was that last part????? 3⭐

Omg Daniel Hurst never disappoints. A fairly simple story told through the points of views of mother and daughter. The daighter has fallen in love with someone she has never met on the other side of the world. So begins the story full of twists and turns. I love the way the narrative focuses on the relationships between the characters. I really felt for Dawn the mother and I was hooked as a simple story as always expanding into so much more. Al the right length and pace this a must. Read. Highly recommended 5 star read. Thank you net gallery and bookculture audio for my arc audio version.

My Daughter’s Boyfriend is a psychological thriller that was predictable in almost every turn it took. I listened to the audiobook with two compelling narrator’s. TBH, if I was reading it, I would not have finished. However, earbuds in and gardening, it was acceptable.
Ellie is a 24 year old UK girl who is spoiled, lazy, babied, and disrespectful. Her mother, Dawn, enables Ellie’s behavior with eye rolling excuses.
Ellie meet an American guy, Daryl, on line and develops feelings for him. Daryl invites Ellie to LA and she graciously accepts. She travels abroad to met Daryl in person and explore her feelings. However, Mama Dawn accompanies her. 🙄. This is where I would have given up if I was reading the book.
However, Once in USA, everything is going as well as expected in an awkward situation. (Daryl 24, still lives with his Dad too).
Then Dawn discovers an earth shaking picture that makes zero sense. They have been lied too. Then she discovers another lie in the glovebox. She grabs Ellie in the middle of the night to get out of dodge. How far will a parent go to protect their child? Half way across the globe and maybe further.

Ellie & Daryl meet on a dating website and quickly fall in love. One problem, they don't live in the same country. Ellie is in England & Daryl is in LA. ( Daryl doesn't really say LA to me but what do I know. )

Ellie decides to go to America to meet Daryl in person, but her mother insists on going with her to make sure she is safe. but one night her mother discovers a terrible secret... Daryl has been lying to us from the start.

Honestly, I seen just about everything coming. The twist wasnt twistin my guy.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'My Daughters Boyfriend' by Daniel Hurst.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Daniel Hurst, Bookouture publishers, Bookouture Audio and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 3rd June 2023.

This is the third book I have read by this author. I have also read 'The Doctor's Wife' and 'The Holiday Home' which I would also highly recommend!!

I was originally drawn to this book by its stunning eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is "An utterly gripping psychological thriller that will keep you up all night from the author of the number one bestselling novel The Doctor’s Wife. If you love Gone Girl, The Night She Disappeared and The Perfect Couple, you’ll be hooked by My Daughter’s Boyfriend." I am a huge fan of 'Gone Girl' so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a HUGE fan of Daniel Hurst after reading his 'The Doctor's Wife' and 'The Holiday Home' and if this book is even half as good as they are was it is guaranteed to be a page turner! I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 34 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Los Angeles, California, USA 🇺🇲 and England🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, UK 🇬🇧.

This book is written in first person perspective and the protagonists are Ellie and Dawn. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.

Well done Daniel on yet another absolutely heart racing and page turning psychological thriller!!!

AN ABSOLUTELY INTRIGUING, THOUGHT PROVOKING, UNPUTDOWNABLE HEART RACING AND EXPLOSIVE BOOK THAT WILL KEEP YOU UP LATE AT NIGHT UNTIL YOU TURN THE LAST PAGE!!

Wow!!! This book is fantastically written and had me hook, line and sinker from beginning to end. The descriptions were so in depth and vivid that the hair on my arms was standing on the ends and my heart was pounding throughout. The synopsis, title and cover were perfect for the storyline.

Another HUGE success by the extremely talented Daniel Hurst!! Daniel is one of those extremely talented authors who has written so many books but yet each one I have read has been just as gripping, unique and explosive as the next!! How he does it I have no idea but whatever you are doing Daniel, keep doing it!!! I absolutely loved this unique page turning explosive page turner. I was absolutely absorbed throughout this psychological thriller. It is filled with tension, drama, family, suspense, lies, deceit,  romance, love, and omg the twist!!! I DID NOT see the twists coming at all and there were more than one!!! Just when I think everything had been worked out and things were settling down BOOM there was another bombshell!! A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS Daniel!! It is getting harder and harder to shock me but by God you did that over and over and over!!! What an ending!!! One of the most gripping unputdownable nerve wracking psychological thrillers I have EVER read!!! You have one hell of a talent and I cannot wait to get hold of your previous and future books in this series. I cannot remember the last time I was so hooked by a book but you managed that big time!!! I loved that the book is told from different perspectives and each of their stories/chapters were perfectly weaved together to show us everything that is going on and how each of the characters are thinking and feeling throughout. The storyline is filled with  shocks, suspense, tension, deceit, and everything you could ask for in a psychological thriller!!. There was so much going on and it was very fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. The surrounding atmosphere was absolutely perfect and the narrative ensures you are completely absorbed into the storyline with the characters coming to life all around you thanks to Daniel's evocative writing skills and Tamsin and Harrie's amazing narratives. If you are ever in a reading slump then any of Daniels books are guaranteed to pull you out of it!!!! I lost count how many times I had funny looks shouting out don't do it as I was walking on the school run listening to this amazing book!! Meeting someone you have been talking to on the net is never the best of ideas. Meeting someone you met on the net and when that lives in another country is definitely NOT a good idea at all!!! However, that is exactly why Ellie does!!! Ellie has been talking to Daryl who lives in America online. Ellie is working in a dead end job and living with her mum Dawn. Dawn also hates her job but has to stick with it to pay the bills after her husband died. When Daryl invited Ellie over to the USA to meet him and even paying for her Ellie can't resist. Dawn is more reluctant but agrees if she goes with Ellie. When Darryl and his Dad Harvey pick them up from the airport Dawn starts noticing an abundance of missing woman posters and later finds a photo of Darryl with one of them after he denied knowing her. Is Darryl telling the truth? Are Dawn and Ellie in danger? Does Harvey know more tis making out? To find out the answer to these and many more questions that you will ask yourself while reading this amazing rollercoaster ride then grab your copy today!!!! This book is absolutely addictive and I read it in one sitting. I absolutely loved the cliff hanging explosive twist at the end that leaves you wanting more! It kept me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with my heart absolutely pounding throughout especially at the end! I really am looking forward to the next book by this extremely talented author. A gripping, all consuming addictive page turner!!!

Clear your schedule before you start as I read this in one sitting as I could not put it down!! Practically every chapter ended on a cliff hanger so no way could I put it down!! Absolutely hooked!! I would absolutely love to see this turned into a movie!!!!

This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the second time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrators Harrie Dobby and Tamsin Kennard who both did an absolutely amazing job bringing this story and the characters to life. I have previously listened to Kathryn Croft's 'The Suspect' and Sheryl Browne's 'Her First Child' on audiobook that are also narrated by Tamsin Kennard and I would highly recommend listening to or reading them both as they are both fantastic page turners from another two great authors!! I would listen to it and this book in the car and while walking at any opportunity. I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Daniel but also to listening to more books narrated by both Harrie and Tamsin!

.

The characters were all strong and realistic and thanks to Daniel's absolutely fantastic writing skills and Tamsin and Harrie's  amazing narrative skills they all come to life when you are turning the pages. My heart went out to Dawn for what she went through and what happened to her when she lost her husband. She is an amazing mother, likeable character and strong woman. Dawn is extremely hard working and has been worn down by life and her daughter Ellie. As much as I liked Dawn the opposite was true with Ellie and I found her to be a completely spoilt brat. She is 24 going on 13 and OMG she drove me absolutely mad with her attitude!!! She is immature, rude, blames her mother for everything, demanding, contributes nothing to the house and arrrggghhh I could go on!!! She really is a despicable character!!! Now, normally when I dislike a character I struggle to enjoy the storyline but with Daniels fantastic writing skills he always manage to put unlikeable characters in such fantastic storylines that you can't help but be addicted to the book regardless of how you feel!!! Both Tamsin and Harrie were perfect to portray the voices of each character helping me like or dislike the characters even more! I will stop here as I will give too much away if I say anymore and I really don't want to spoil it for future readers so I wont say anything else and let other readers make their own minds up about how they feel about the characters.. Regardless of whether you love or hate the characters they all worked perfectly together to make this an addictive and explosive storyline!!

This is exactly why you are one of my favourite male authors Daniel! An absolute must read author!! I cannot wait to read all your previous and future books!! Here's to your next success 🥂

I'm convinced this was written by a 14 year old. Horrible writing, phrasing, all of it. The characters were idiots with no depth. I legit wasted my time
