Jason wonders if his luck has finally turned around when he discovers he will inherit a luxurious home infused with ancient magic and a sizable fortune from a relative he’d never known existed. Of course, there’s a catch. His younger brother and his cousin will inherit equal parts of the inheritance and it is stipulated in the will that they must live together first before they gain possession of the estate. All three of them are potential White Knights with the rare ability to practice advanced white magic. They must learn to use their new power and defend themselves from a secret organization that is armed with potent, black magic. This novella is the first installment of the Wizards of Seattle series.

He loves reading fantasy, science fiction, and humorous fiction. Some of his favorite authors include Kim Harrison, Jim Butcher, Kay Hooper (Bishop Files/ psychic detective thrillers), Kat Richardson, J.K. Rowling, Angie Sage, Jayne Krentz, and Janet Evanovich. He currently lives in Lynnwood, Washington which is by Seattle and owns a parakeet named Amy. Amy is by far the most polite bird he's ever had as she always quiets down if he takes a nap or needs rest. However, when she wants a treat, she will squawk at him until he takes her out of the cage and gives her millet seeds.
This is the second series I started authored by John O' Riley. Related to other series he made, this happened in a world where magi, wizards and paranormals exists together.
Compared to other series, I personally seem to like this more. I am highly intrigued with the characters in this book rather with those in other series. I like the way Jason and Amy has something unexplored with their abilities rather than be "normal" like everybody else. I like the way the author hanged the story for the next book in the series. I am highly curious to who and what Radha is and what she will be to the hero. The introduction od the paranormal beings like the constructs, vampires and succubus added another twisting element to the story. I also loved the way the author put limits to each and every character and their abilities. The balance between the strength and being finite of each power goes well with the story and characters themselves.
Over-all, I personally love this series more than the other one he made. I realized that it has a Mercedes Lackey type of story telling (not the plot) in here compared to the others and it is in a very positive way. I am way too piqued to read the whole of the series. Kudos again to John O' Riley for this series!
This was my first book by John O'Riley. Wizards and magic are usually a topic I enjoy reading about so I was excited to start this book knowing the author as written other wizard series. It started off strong and I enjoyed the content and story. In the middle of the book just as I was getting into the story, the whole story stopped and did a recap. I had been on a roll reading and didn't realize the book changed parts. The recap in the middle felt unnecessary. It completely threw me off. The second half of the story never really came together for me after that. Instead I felt the story was in a rush to get to the end from there. I plan on looking into another series by this author to see if I get the same feel.
This is an excellent book. Once I started reading it I could not put it down until I finished it. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their relationship with each other. There is a lot of magical action. My favorite characters are Jason, Benjamin, Amy and Michelle. Monte surprised me. His true self was totally unexpected. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book. This book us a great read
Futuristic wizardry combining fantasy with sci-fi. Good stuff, great characters, interesting venue and plot twists. Seattle's not the usual place to have a population of pointy heads with magic wands hanging.
Full meal deal in a compact yarn. Really wets you appetite for more, more angels than a Swiss army knife. Really fun with just enough characters to satisfy everyone.
I do enjoy a John O'Riley story. Jason his brother Ben and cousin Amy.,have inherited a family home from a relative they knew nothing about. Together they are finding out about their abilities as wizards. Of course there is an enemy got in their tails. Looking forward to reading more stories in this series.
Kind of a yawn. The concept is interesting, but there is so much telling going on in this book. Several descriptions occurred over and over again, and it just didn't grab my interest. There are several grammar mistakes, as well as discontinuity within the plot.
I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Inheritance is episode one of The Wizards of Seattle series. The story begins by introducing us to Jason, a young category three wizard with the unusual ability to read psychometry. He lost his job three months prior and was desperate to find another job. While out having dinner with his two best friends, he is attacked by a curse. His friends manage to distract it briefly but not long enough and eventually the curse strangles him. His best friend Monte revives him and is at the hospital when he awakens. Upon his return home he is visited by the executor of a distant cousin's will. In it, she states the her three chosen relatives must live at her estate for ten years practicing white magic and becoming white knights. If they choose not to become white knights, they must still live at the estate for the duration in order to receive their share of the property and four hundred thousand dollars.
Jason grudgingly moves into the mansion, but soon realizes that living with his brother, Benjamin and cousin, Amy, isn't as bad as he thought it would be. He also finds out that the Valturas are responsible for the attempt on his life and his brother and cousin are in danger as well. During a battle with two of the curses, Ben unintentionally releases a spell on Jason, awakening his latent category six abilities. Will Ben, Jason, and Amy be able to survive the attacks by the Valturas? Will they be able to awaken their white magic in time to save themselves? Can they trust those around them?
I've missed reading about The Grumpy Old Wizards series, so when I found out about this new series, I just had to read it. Each character has their own unique personality, but I think my favorite at the moment is Ben. He's so laid back and easy going, he doesn't seem to worry about anything. This story has nonstop action and edge of your seat excitement, as well as some funny moments. If you haven't read anything by John O'Riley, I strongly suggest you start with Inheritance. It's a quick, fun read that everyone will enjoy!
I'm back with another series by John O'Riley! If you recall, I really enjoyed his storylines in the past and these two novellas weren't any different. Secret societies, wizardry, mysterious inheritances...it all adds up to a quickly moving story that leaves you wanting to know what happens next. Like his other works, the author fills these novellas with tons of detailed information so it's not difficult at all to see the entire story unfolding in your head. Where it has bothered me in the past, in these, it seems to work. I do have one major complaint though and it's the fact that there is a major story issue in the first novella where the book contradicts itself. I can't describe it further without spoilers and honestly, some readers may just overlook it entirely. For me though, it stumped me and had me reading back and forth to make sure that I'd understood the story correctly. Also, I'm going on the assumption that I didn't receive the final edited stories, so it's entirely possible that this and the grammar/typos were fixed before publication. All in all, another enjoyable read that lovers of fantasy should enjoy.
Inheritance is the first installment of the Wizards of Seattle series and titled well to represent Jason Flanigan’s joint inheritance, offering a major turning point to his difficult situation as long as prerequisites are upheld, his future would certainly benefit. The prerequisites seem daunting at first glance but provide much needed hope and a supernatural gain in an array of ways yet unveils unwanted fret from terrorizing dark forces to all three involved in the inheritance left by his mysterious Aunt.
Jason’s journey includes intertwined moments of magic, malice, deceit, terror and loyalty with the flow of the pages gradually revealing the true inner nature of some curious characters giving this read an exciting edge. The terrifying scenes with the construo letalis, the particulars of Jason’s first case, the deceit that lay ahead were unique and unpredictable making this read memorable.
This novella is an intriguing first encounter and I look forward to reading the next action packed installment to the Wizards of Seattle. Highly recommend to readers of Paranormal & Urban Fantasy!!
Inheritance (Wizards of Seattle Series Book 1) is a fantasy story in a contemporary, magical world in which everyone is a wizard. I was hooked from the beginning when a curse, in the form of a black-eyed woman, is pursuing the protagonist. It jumps right into the action and you began learning about their powers. Jason knows instinctively she’s not human and what she’s there for, as him and his friends attempt to fight her off. Chapter 2 has its first twist in the story where you really get a greater sense of how incredible this world is, and I couldn’t help but continue reading to the end. This is very well-written, with ample descriptions, making it easy to immerse myself in the story. I like the way the author blended everyday life with fantasy and magic. Exciting plot and lots of action - would recommend!
Ok here we go, this book was given to me as a gift, I was not familiar with the author John O'Riley, but I can honestly say, I will be reading his works from now on.
Imagine living in a place where the majority of people are wizards with different level of wizardry; good and evil.
Inheritance - Wizards of Seattle, have an exciting plot and lots of action; John set the stage for you, then he introduces the main characters, Jason, Amy, and Ben who happen to be are all related. They inherited a relative estate and all three must live together for 10 years to gain the inheritance.
The contingency of the inheritance was that all three have to practice white magic and eventually become a white knight.
This book is filled with lots of exciting twists, supernatural spells, vortexes , and dark forces. This is a must read.
Where magic is the norm, anything can happen and it'll be no surprise. I bought this immediately after going through O'Riley's "Grumpy Old Wizards". I enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed that. Inheritance brings into focus an unemployed man, Jason Flanigan who is a category 3 wizard with the exceptional skill of reading psychometry. This was the skill that made the Police department to consider him for employment. Jason soon discovers about the mansion he inherited. But the house comes with a condition, he must live with his cousin Amy and brother Benjamin, for 10years. All these twists and turns with the black, white magics make the book more engaging and satisfying. What I like most is O'Riley's descriptive prowess and insight. It's amazing. This work will surely Keep you at the edge of the seat while at it. I'll advise you check out other episodes by O'Riley. Happy reading all!
When I was asked to read this book by John O'Riley, I said "SURE!!" I always love the opportunity to read a book by a new author to me. I can honestly say that I feel like I really hit that jackpot!!!
Reading about Jason and his learning about his new powers was amazing!!! I don't write spoilers - but I can say that this is a book that will truly keep your interest. Just when I though I had figured out what the author was doing, WHAM - he throws a twist in that I was just not expecting.
I really enjoyed the detail that the author writes with - makes this book more enjoyable to read and increases the fact that once you are reading that you just DO NOT want to put the book down!!!
I was given a copy of this book for an honest review

So this story started off a little slow. But really that is to be excepted of a first book. It started out setting the stage. Jason is a level 3 wizard that has the abilities of a level 6. Then someone with black mmagic tries to kill him for some unknown reason. He finds out that he has inherited alot and the attacks keep coming. Him, his cousin Amy and brother Ben have to live together to gain that inheritance. Jason seem like an average person going through a rough time. He gets a job and even though hee is not able to become a white night yet like Amy and Ben, he does become a level 6. Now they have to figure out who is trying to kill them and why. I like the story and could not wait to read the second episode. I received this book in exchange for an honest review
Magic, wizards, secrets, and evil organizations combine to fuel the start of the Wizards of Seattle series.
I'm not the biggest fan of serials, and I do usually wait until all the books are completed. I'm just impatient, but the blurb drew me in as I love books that feature magic, curses, and the mundane rising. Jason, the MC, is mundane but not in a boring human sense; he's a wizard without a job, who finds himself the target of a deadly curse.
I enjoyed this opening as it revealed the world for those of us who haven't read John O'Riley's other books, but those who have will still enjoy. It's a great book for lovers of urban fantasy and paranormal genres. I look forward to reading the rest.
I was completely swept off my feet from start to finish with this intriguing book! With non-stop action, secrets galore and a captivating storyline, I was absolutely engrossed with this spectacular read. A tantalizingly slow reveal of layers of plots just kept building the whole time and as soon as I thought I had things figured out....a new twist would appear! The writing was very good and stayed fresh throughout without a single dull moment. There's quite a cliffhanger at the end that left me flipping through the end pages looking for an excerpt from the next book. Alas, no sneak peek. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this intriguing series after all the fun I had reading this first book!
When Jason Flanigan inherits an old home infused with magic, he thinks his luck has finally turned for the better. The will, from a previously unknown relative, stipulates that he, and his younger siblings must stay in the house together until they learn to use the magic. Jason, though, has a problem; he’s been recruited by the police, a job he doesn’t want to turn down, which means he can’t stay in the house like the will requires. Inheritance by John O’ Riley is a fantasy story with lots of action and humor mixed in. A short read, it is the author’s first in the Wizards of Seattle series, and is great reading for a dark evening when you have nothing else to do.
I absolutely loved reading ‘Inheritance.’ This is my first experience with author John O’Riley but I can’t imagine it being my last. I was really impressed with the story he put together and I fell in love with the way magic worked in this world.
It was an interesting plot feature to bind Jason, his brother and his cousin together in order to get the inheritance. It created an interesting dynamic that really added to the story.
‘Inheritance’ was a strong start that painted a vivid picture of this magical world. I’ll be interested to see what else O’Riley has to offer in the rest of the Wizards of Seattle Series.
This is an excellent book to read. When I started to read this book, I could not put down this book because this is a very enjoyable story. The story was started about Jason, who will inherit a luxurious home with ancient magic. His two cousins also inherit equal parts of the inheritance. Actually, they are potential white knights who have the ability to practice advanced white magic. So they learn to use a new magic power to protect themselves from a secret organization of black magic. Reading this novel, I have learned about white magic which is saving Jason and two other friends from the attack of the Valturas.
I had forgotten about this book, it had gotten lost in a pile I had gotten at the same time. My too read pile is growing faster than I can keep up with. I read this on the flight for vacation,a good quick read. I really loved it. I am a huge fantasy fan, and this book delivered. Once I started it was hard to put it down. Who doesn't love magic, and curses?? I let my nieces(ages 12, and 13) read it on vacation as well, and they couldn't put it down either. We can't wait to find the rest of the series, so we can read it together!
I adore John O'Riley's books, first series I read from him was, Grumpy old Wizards, now he has this new series, Wizards of Seattle. You will meet Jason he is a level 3 wizard, but has a gift that only level 6 levels have, there for he is not allowed to do everything and has a hard time finding a job. When he get almost killed he can't stop wonder why, but he soon will find out. Jason will also find a job and finally feels useful again. And then there is that aunt that passed away, whom he never heard off, Jason his brother and their cousin need to live in the house the aunt left them.
I did like this book better than "Grumpy Old Wizards." The writing has matured some and the story line was interesting. I don't know if it is just me, but the story still seems a little forced. I am willing to try one more to see if the improvements continue.
This book is set in the same place and time as "Grumpy Old Wizards," so if you have read that one than you will not have trouble following the characters and events. I don't know how you will feel about the "everyone is a wizard" thing without some more background. This book seems to be a little light on that.
I liked the storyline but had a hard time connecting with the characters. The book moved at a good place and the characters were likeable, but there wasn't a lot of emotional depth. The book was more of a narrative of events than a story. I prefer books that explore the main characters emotions a little more. This will probably be a series I read when I want something simple and easy to read.
I really don't love these new series which instead of being full books are really single books that have been serialized. It feels a lot like getting cheated. The stories always stop mid tale on a kind of cliff hanger. And that is clearly intended to get the reader to purchase the next one. I prefer self contained books.
I don't know how this book ended up on my Kindle, but there it is. I sure hope I didn't pay for it. The premise of the story looked good, but the execution was uninspired. The prose was flat and the dialogue boring. Oh well.
Also, 30% of the book ended up being previous for other books. It looked like the last twenty pages our so we're written in a rush and definitely didn't do the rest of the book justice
