Jack, Tess and the gang are back in another hoot of a mystery..Here we get just as many fun sayings, quirky moments a whodunit that leaves you guessing to the very end.

The first book is not needed to read this one for this is a new mystery. Martha Maye has returned home and is starting anew. She likes Johnny but is trying to get her life in order and he likes her but is starting his new job. they do grow close though as he is brought into the investigation of her husband’s death and he is a suspect...

Each character warms your heart and just makes you feel at home in Goose Pimple Junction where small town living is at its best and murder is afoot. Martha Maye’s husband wasn’t a great guy..But the way he went wasn’t deserved and the who was totally not who I expected.

Johnny and Martha are our main characters and they bowl you over. Johnny who is as big as an ox but is caring and has a heart of gold. He is the new police chief and boy does he have a crush on Martha but he does take it slow due to the situation, He respects her and is a perfect Southern gentleman..Martha is sweet as pie, smart as a whip and kind to all..Her mama raised her right and when her husband turns up dead she is right at the top of the list...While trying to show she is innocent, keep her brother in law at bay and her crush to Johnny under control she is taking care of her adorable daughter Butterbean.

A great fun entertaining tale that keeps you guessing and laughing all at once.

It's the Fall season in Goose Pimple Junction, and the townsfolks are preparing for the Oktoberfest. But with the season comes some mischief, a thief is stealing pumpkins, pies, and other items from the town residents. Then there is Martha Maye and daughter Carrie "Butterbean," who have come home to Goose Pimple Junction after leaving her soon to be ex-husband Lenny, but he isn’t far behind, and he is determined to win back Martha Maye's love. But all hell breaks loose during the Oktoberfest when Lenny is found dead in Martha Maye’s front yard, adding murder to the mayhem that has been stirred up in this small southern picturesque town.

This captivating tale has enough twists and turns that will leave your head spinning! Rich in detail and vivid descriptions, the story takes place in Goose Pimple Junction, Tennessee, a picturesque southern town with a lot of heart and charm. The description of the town and surrounding area was wonderful, there's nothing better than down home country charm and living. Here we are, back in GPJ with our usual cast. OMG, this is a fun ride thru a small country town. Junebug, what with her speech patterns of orders to Slick in the Diner, Aunty with her random commercial slogans, a host of others and a bit of thievery thrown in. Oh, don't forget there's a murder too. This book is as funny and entertaining as the first. The drawl on some of these folks...well, thankfully Tess has Jack to translate. But, wow.. So most of our story centers around the Harvest Days Celebration and a little lady trying her best for her and her daughter while her estranged husband tries to get back in their lives. She's not having any of it. Toss in a thief, stealing random objects from stores, bars, and kitchens, and you've got Heroes and Hooligans all thru Goose Pimple Junction

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Fall in in the air in Goose Pimple Junction and the residents are getting ready for Oktoberfest. But there is a lot of tomfoolery goin’ on. Someone is stealing pumpkins, pies, and even stuff from people’s pantries. Martha Maye has come home to Goose Pimple Junction and her no good husband, Lenny, isn’t far behind. She has also started receiving some unusual gifts from a secret admirer. The new police chief, Johnny Butterfield, who is a little sweet on Martha Maye himself, it trying to catch the thief and is doing all he can to keep Lenny away from Martha Maye. When Lenny is found dead in Martha Maye’s front yard he has to let his officers take over the case but that doesn’t stop him from doing a little investigating on his own.

This is another marvelous story from Amy Metz. Fantastic characters like Martha Maye, Butterbean, Johnny, Ima Jean, Honey, Maddy Mack, Pickle and more. I loved Pickle’s t-shirts with sayings like “Hard Work Must Have Killed Someone” and Ima Jean’s commercial jingles input like “Gentlemen prefer Hanes” and “Leggo My Eggo“. Characters from Murder and Mayhem in Goose Pimple Junction like Jack and Tess are back too. Tess is catching on to more of the Southern dialect. Some of the phasing made me smile and laugh out loud. “Hirey’all tonight?” “We’re hanging in there like loose teeth, Junebug, hireyew.” Each chapter also starts with a Southern Proverb too like “When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department usually uses water.” This book is just overflowing with Southern charm.

We get into the book a bit before Lenny ends up dead so we have plenty of time to get to know the characters before they become suspects. It was hard to really think of any of them as a killer. I really didn’t like Lenny so I wasn't broken up that he was the victim. One of the officers is even questioning the chief’s innocence, so I did as well. Metz plots things out brilliantly with those wonderful twists that we cozy lovers crave.

A perfect escape for this time of year. I highly recommend a virtual trip as soon as possible.

I cannot remember the last time I read such a fun series, it was a refreshing change of pace from my recent fare. While reading, I was smiling or chortling 90% of the time, and will admit to laughing aloud on a number of occasions, while my husband claims I also snorted several times. I do recall having coffee go up my nose, which is an experience I would not care to repeat - so I recommend abstaining from liquids during your perusal. Amy Mertz has created an enthralling and addictive community of quirky characters that speak English, but in a decidedly different form of “Southern speak.” I had marked more “Favorite Quotes” than my blog actually has pages for. Having grown up with a father that often spouted such maxims, I was familiar with some of the colorful axioms, but many were just too funny to pass by in a casual manner, so the reading of these books took me a bit longer than most, as I wanted to savor each and every word. To say I enjoyed Ms. Mertz work would be an understatement, I relished it, adored it, want to marry it. The writing was exceptional, easy to follow, highly entertaining, and extremely clever. It was not only funny, but intelligent and suspenseful. Even, now, I want more and already miss reading about this interesting populace.

Oh my gosh, this book was utterly charming! I love all the "southern" charm and the characters are even funnier in this book.
Martha Maye is divorcing her no good, snake in the grass husband. She is making a new life for herself and her daughter, "Butterbean" in Goose Pimple Junction and she is quite content to settle into her new life.
Unfortunately, her husband, Lenny, shows up in Goose Pimple. He claims he wants to "win his wo-man back," but the truth is he is a coward and he is running from a couple of thugs who are trying to collect a debt.
Lenny starts stalking poor Martha Maye and this gets the new police chief all crazy since he is crushing on Martha Maye.
When Lenny begins to up his nastiness with a custody battle, tempers flare and Martha Maye is distraught. On the evening of Oktoberfest, Lenny is found crumpled on Martha Maye's front lawn. He is definitely dead and new police office, Velveeta Witherspoon takes over the investigation.
A by the book officer of the law, Velveeta leaves no stone un-turned until she finds out who killed Lenny, even if it means looking hard at the police chief and Martha Maye.

My favorite character in this book is Aunt Imy. Oh my gosh, she made me laugh so hard when she quoted tv commercials.

What I love about this series is all the funny things that happen outside the mystery. If you read it too fast, you will miss out on some fabulous tidbits.
All the characters are quite colorful and they make the story so much fun to read. The bantering and bickering, the silliness and the small town setting make this one of my favorite series.

I was shocked when I finished, I had no idea who the killer was and the ending was a great surprise. I can't wait to read more in this awesome series.

Another riveting murder mystery, and great yarn!!!

The storytelling is sooooo engaging! As many mysteries as I've read I can't believe I missed the murderers again! In my defense I did figure out the thief, just before it came to light. On to the next book in this series.

Excellent read. Feel part of the township. Would have liked a bit more steam heat between couples, but still good. Surprise ending. Great curve ball!! I missed it by a mile!

Another fun filled wander through Goose Pimple Junction Having read and loved ‘Murder and Mayhem’ I was a bit concerned that the details of the first book would not be as fresh in my memory as I’d like them to, but soon enough I felt at home in Goose Pimple Junction, a charming Southern town, with a gorgeous bookshop (that features less centrally in this book than in the first one), a diner with one of the most entertaining couples I’ve met in any books (and fab descriptions of foods), a new chief of police (and very dashing), and a mystery or two. I was happy to revisit two of the main characters in the first story, the two writers, Jack and Tess, and see how their romance was progressing, although this time the mysteries centre around Martha Maye and her estranged and fairly narcissistic husband, Lenny, and some odd robberies.
My impression is that a reader who hadn’t read the first book in the series would be able to follow this novel, although would probably feel intrigued, as there are several times when the events of the first novel are referred to without giving many details.
I enjoyed the Southern proverbs and use of dialect as much as I did the first time around, although like everything that’s quirky and adds to the atmosphere rather than the plot, it might not be to the taste of all readers.
If I had to compare it to the first novel in the series, I’d say ‘Heroes and Hooligans’ is a much easier read, as there are no different time frames or stories taking place in different historical periods. There are also fewer characters being truly involved in the case and the family connections are far less complicated, although I think that added to the texture and experience of the first one. The two main characters, Johnny, the new chief of police, and Martha Maye, are easy to like, and in the case of Martha Maye due to the family connections and our previous knowledge she feels very familiar. We don’t know much about Johnny other than he is besotted with Martha Maye, but he plays the hero part with aplomb, and seems perfectly matched with her. I still felt closer to Tess and Jack, but I always like writer characters.
On the side of the hooligans, Lenny is thoroughly creepy and unlikeable as I already mentioned I think he fits into the category of narcissist too. His brother is a strange character, somewhat more complex than Lenny and the murderer… Although there are some clues, who the guilty party is, is far from evident. (And I won’t spoil the mystery).
The two mysteries and the secondary characters (Pickles and his T-shirts, Martha Maye’s fabulous family, including the fantastic Lou and her aunt), the fabulous titles of songs and the Oktoberfest (that easily rivals the 4th of July celebrations of the first novel, if not surpasses it) will give most readers the right amount of intrigue and humour and will keep them coming back for more, as will the quality of the writing.
A fun, light read, full of unforgettable characters. I’m eagerly waiting for the third novel.

Goose Pimple Junction seems like Mayberry R.F.D. on steroids. In her second book, Heroes & Hooligans in Goose Pimple Junction, author Amy Metz brings back to life all the southern charm she introduced in her first novel, Murder and Mayhem in Goose Pimple Junction. The characters are well defined and the storyline reminds me of being on an inner tube floating along a lazy river. As a reader you feel comfortable in Metz’s fictional town. So much so, that I often wondered if there was land for sale.
From baked goods to town fairs, I felt like nothing could go wrong, but that’s where the hooligan part comes in. The main character, Martha Maye, had her troubles in the first book and Metz brings her along with the rest of the entertaining cast in the second book. Add a little suspense, a few twists, a new love interest and a neighbor with an excellent choice in books, and you’ve got the makings of a whodunit in this sleepy town. Along the way, Metz supplies the reader with a copious amount of southern slang that makes you smile if not laugh out loud. Overall, the book is very entertaining and works perfectly as a series. I’m looking forward to the third book, Rogues and Rascals.

*I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.*
I found this book much more interesting than the first. I feel like it didn't drag on as much. It moved along greatly. My interest was held. The same witty Southern speak was in this book and I've come to find it endearing (and may have even caught myself saying some of the phrases to my friends!). It was nice seeing characters from the first book.
"I've had a taste of freedom, and let me tell you, Leonard Skynyrd, it tastes mighty good." Awesome quotes begin each chapter and some of the conversations will have you cracking up out loud.
"I'm so old I owe Jesus a nickel, and I know a thing or two."
I loved Lou in the first book. Seeing her and Martha Maye more was great. There's more than 1 mystery going on here and you're going to be held captivated by this book! It's well worth a read.
The song names will have you snorting and laughing. i.e- I Can't Be Number One In Your Life, Then Number Two On You.
I can't wait for more!

Heroes & Hooligans in Goose Pimple Junction: Goose Pimple Junction Mysteries Book 2) by Amy Metz is another hugely entertaining cosy mystery in this excellent and original series.
Told with excellent humour the book is spiked with amusing details, such as names and Southern idiosynchrasies, making it worth your read just for that.
The story focuses on the police chief Johnny, who has his hands full with his workload, while falling for Martha Maye, a recently separated woman who has to fight off the unwanted attention.
Throw in a murder case and you have a book full of spark and plot that won't let up.
I enjoyed the first book in the series but this is even better: Playful, light-hearted and well written. Highly recommended!

Martha Maye and her daughter, Carrie ‘Butterbean’, have moved to Goose Pimple Junction where her mother, Louella, and aunt Ima live. After surviving a kidnapping in volume 1, she has settled into a rented home, gotten a job and making new friends while proceeding with her divorce from Lenny, philanderer and violent. When a series of Secret Admirer gifts start appearing and then Lenny shows up she gets nervous. He says he’s changed and wants her back. Another side story involves a growing series of missing objects from everyone in town. The local Police Chief is attracted to Martha Maye but she tries to quell her feelings until the divorce. Then things get complicated when Lenny is murdered and she and the chief are prime suspects. Lots of colloquial language that gets a little overdone.

You won't find a more charming or more engaging cozy; I guarantee it. This town is full of characters and they are all well developed and a joy to discover. There are several mysteries going on at the same time so it is hard to tell what is a red herring and which clues are genuinely part of the bigger solution. This had a bit of romance, but wasn't too heavy handed with it. The real charm of this book is in the way the town itself is portrayed and I'll bet you'll be wishing you could pay Goose Pimple Junction a visit in real life.

A fun old-fashioned mystery that will keep you grinning from ear to ear. Many of the same ornery and lovable characters return, along with a few new prospects--or is it suspects? You'll wish you could show up at the diner for a big piece of pie and a mug of hot coffee. Amy makes her villains so repulsive that you're almost relieved when they turn up dead. Full of Southern sayings, wit and humor with plenty of suspense--an enjoyable and entertaining read all-around!

Little disappointing

This was a good murder mystery, with real good characters. But I miss the down home feeling of the first book, with its "southern charm language". Although there were some nice southern phrases in this one. Just felt the first was better. I will follow this author to see if another book is in the making.
