Dorothy Must Die: The Other Side of the Rainbow Collection: No Place Like Oz / Dorothy Must Die / The Witch Must Burn / The Wizard Returns / The Wicked Will Rise
There's a new wicked witch in Oz—and her name is Dorothy. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz meets Kill Bill in this edgy, fast-paced, fantasy-adventure series from New York Times bestselling author Danielle Paige. The first two novels and three novellas are available together here for the first time:
Dorothy Must Die: Oz has turned into a savage dystopia under Dorothy's rule—and now a new girl from Kansas must take her down. Amy Gunn been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. Her mission: Remove the Tin Woodman's heart. Steal the Scarecrow's brain. Take the Lion's courage. And—Dorothy must die.
The Wicked Will Rise: With the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked scattered across Oz, Amy Gumm is on her own in the twisted fairyland. As she searches the kingdom in the hopes of destroying Dorothy once and for all, Amy realizes that nothing is what it seems in Oz and everyone has their own agenda.
This collection also contains the three prequel novellas No Place Like Oz, The Witch Must Burn, and The Wizard Returns.
So, Dorothy came back to Oz and the cute, innocent little girl turned into a sultry, mean, hungry for power vamp who is about to destroy everything that made Oz a wonderful place. Now here comes Amy, a not so much loved girl from Kansas who, just as Dorothy, rides on a tornado to Oz and stumbles into a mission to save the land from the Good/Wicked.
While I loved the first book (the story, the characters, the world...I mean Oz gone dark, how amazing can that be to read about?) the second one left me a little disappointed. I don't want to give away too much, so I'll just say that the story was a little repetitive, some of the characters became a little annoying and part of the story line just transformed into this cliche YA fantasy thing of tough and troubled girl meets tough and troubled boy. I will probably still read the next book (because the end was really good again) but I also think that I need a break now after the books and the three short stories (which I enjoyed very much by the way. They give valuable background information on the story even though I felt that Jellia's didn't fit perfectly with what happened and was said in the books) in this collection.
4.5 stars for me on this one: The whole collection is truly wonderful. I love anything that takes a classic and spins it all around and twists it in to something completely different. It’s usually fairy tales that I gravitate toward the most, but this is almost the same to me. Amy is a heroine that most people I’m sure would love. You might think that she’s sort of done growing by the end of the first book, but she just gets better in book 2. Oz is dying, Dorothy is so, not the girl you’d expect, and neither are her friends. It’s up to another girl from Kansas to try her best to rectify this horrible mess. But, it’s not totally up to her, but also up to who would seem to be the wicked witches. The two main novels are all about Amy and her adventures. The other novelas flush out the world, starting with the villain Dorothy herself, then Jellia, a girl you get to know in book 1, and the wonderful wizard himself. If you enjoy anything where fairy tales or other classics are turned on their heads, books with strong heroines who come in to their own (a reason why I so love YA,) and novels that help to flush out the world, this collection is for you. Highly recommended.
Dorothy Must Die: 4 stars The Wicked Must Die: 3 stars
The 3 stories in the series are short novellas given you more information about the first 2 books in the series. All together I give them 4 stars because they answered the questions I had during the first books. This whole book series is a good twist on the old tale of Oz . I can't wait to read the finale book in the series!
I have read all of these books and I must say - BRAVO - Danielle Paige did an outstanding job on this series. I have the Straw King and Heart of Tin on library hold. I just pre ordered Yellow Brick War and about to purchase the prequel - Ruler of Beasts. I really enjoyed this series.
The only improvement to the series I would add is -- MAKE THEM ALL AUDIO BOOKS!!
