A girl with hair spun from starlight. A fallen guardian bound to a shattered realm. And a tower that was never meant to protect her.
High above the mortal world, Ariadne lives alone in a tower touched by the stars. Her silver hair, glowing with ancient magic, is said to be cursed—never to be cut, never to be touched. But when a celestial storm rains fire across the sky, a stranger crashes into her world. Cassian is a guardian from a forgotten realm, drawn by a prophecy and the shimmering strands that hold the key to awakening long-buried power.
As Ariadne’s magic begins to stir, the truth unravels—she is not cursed, but chosen, a living bridge to the lost kingdom of Starna. And the tower that binds her is not a sanctuary, but a prison built to contain the magic threatening to tear the realms apart.
With the stars falling and darkness rising, Ariadne must decide whether to sever her past… or embrace the magic woven into her very soul.
If you love quiet heroines discovering untold power, brooding guardians with hidden hearts, and towers hiding secrets written in the stars—you’ll love this Rapunzel reimagining.

Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review. I absolutely loved this retelling of a famous fairytale. Adding a prophecy and starlight hair really improved the story, in my opinion. Emotional, suspense filled with magic waiting for release, and blooming romance make this story delightful. Gripping nail biting journey of discovery and danger as the prophecy becomes complete, makes for an unforgettable and unputdownable story!.
I love a new take on an old fairy tale, and this book definitely provided that. The worldbuilding had promise, and I loved the way the author wove the hair and a few of the other original story elements into the tale. There were some truly original takes and interpretations on Rapunzel in this book, and that can be hard to find.
I had a lot more problems with the rest of the book's execution. The writing consisted mostly of short sentences or sentence fragments (with only a few sentences per page over 10 words) that meant things felt disconnected and choppy. The shorter format meant that there wasn't time to fully develop the world-building or characters, so things often felt tropey and two dimensional. I would have loved to have seen what this story could be with as a 50-100 more pages so the author could dive into the characters and world a bit more.
I'd recommend this book for people who want a quick and fun Rapunzel retelling.

A girl born of silence. A girl bound by starlight. Sever the shadow and restore the night.
Ariadne has lived in her tower all her life being told the world and strangers are dangerous, that they would just want her starlight hair, but she’s beginning to have doubts. And when a man falls from the sky who knows her name and says it’s because of a prophecy, she wants to know more.
Cassian came down to earth due to a prophecy that may be about this girl called Ariadne whose mother is the Weaver of Dawn and her father is the Guardian of Night and was born of light and shadow. And he believes she can save his world.
This is a very fast and sweet read. There is a world in here that I think would have been wonderful to explore more. There was not enough world building to truly understand and appreciate where I am reading.
Despite that, the story itself and the romance are very sweet and cute. Ariadne learns to be a stronger and more outspoken person with Cassian defending her along the way. If you loved Tangled, you’ll definitely enjoy this one!
I truly enjoyed it, just wish it wasn’t so short and I could learn more about this world.
Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the e-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“When prophecy stirs, the world listens.” The tale begins with a child that is not part of our known reality, born of two celestial gods whose life had been isolated, portrayed as a myth or is she part of a prophecy. An heir to rule, or disrupt, hidden until she could be brought home to the magical realm of Spartna. Born in the stars, of light and shadow, raised in a magical tower with only books to keep her company after her caretaker died. She had been warned that her long-braided silver hair kept her bound to this mortal realm, hidden from those who would harm her. Told she must never cut her hair for she would go mad. Tales to keep a child in line or warnings about men with dark hearts who would use her for their own gain…Until the day he came, Cassian. He knew her name, Ariadne. Told her she was the princess of a magical land that had been torn asunder by tyrant who had ruled over her people for more than two decades. She was at the center of a prophecy that told of a time when she would return to save the land from destruction, as well as the human realm in which she grew up. She would set her people free, from the usurper, as the rightful ruler. The stars were disappearing; it was time for her to return to Spartna. Trust doesn’t come easily to all in Spartna. Ariadne will have to prove her worth. It begins with Cassin and Ariaden, their attraction to each other is as if they were fated to meet. Along the way there are allies that will walk at their side while others will guide them in their quest to reach the Celestial Gate. Twill, an elven sylph, has just a touch of rascally behavior that the tale needs to shake up the characters and twists in the storyline. There are villains as well that try to stop our heroes. Battles rage here, there is a quest, a relic that is at the center, a piece of the final key needed to return the worlds to their natural order. This is intriguing speculative fiction, beyond a simple fairy tale a mix of science fiction, fantasy and descriptive elements that make this one to be heard aloud. So, suspend reality and what you know of the world; what you believe you know of fantasy tales because this tale may have begun in the stars, but it brings the reader down to the common theme of good versus evil, greed for power and control. While a sheltered young woman must face her fears, and destiny to bring the world to rights, she won’t do it alone, the young man who first believed in her and then loved her will be by her side. A narrative romantic tale that opens the world around Ariaden and Cassin for the reader to see. As a storyteller, I believe this is a tale best served aloud as listeners gather round to share and learn of a story that began in the stars above and will continue into the next book. I thoroughly enjoyed this new twist on an old fairy tale. I received an advanced readers copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
3.5/5 ✨ Once Upon a Silver Strand offers a fresh take on the classic Rapunzel story so if you like a quick retelling this may be for you!
The author adds some unique elements in Rapunzel’s storyline like with her otherworldly lineage and the goal to help her people, but the execution honestly was a miss for me. This was an extremely fast-paced plot (the book is only 144 pages long), and although it was engaging and it’s plot had the chance to be a great read, it definitely left room for more such as an exploration of the background, the mystical world but also, growth of our main characters.
To me, the characters seemed interesting enough on paper, however, they felt quite one-dimensional, and with immediate evolution, and gratification. For example, Ariadne’s character and growth feels rushed, especially given how sheltered we are expected to believe she has been. She had an insta romance with Cassian that was built on quite abruptly within a few chapters, which felt awkward or rushed at times.
The one thing I would have enjoyed more, were the dual POVs which however due to the length of the book, they didn't allow us to fully grasp both of our MMCs emotional depth as instead of adding to the plot, they subtracted from each other’s spotlight in the book.
The writing, was quite abrupt as it got us from point A to point B in no time, which left me confused and messed up with the general flow of the story.
Overall, this was a quick read for those of you who want a fantasy, but to be honest, it didn't offer the depth of a fantasy storyline I would have wanted for this plot!

I am so happy I received this ARC when I requested it. And of course it was free! I am willingly leaving this review in great hopes it will reach the right people.
Mrs. Michelle Miles is a charismatic author and both the books I have read from her I love them! Her retelling books have the main core but explore the world and personally, this feels like an amazing book.
My only regret at first was that this book was a novel. So much plot could easily become a series and when I reached the end, and when I saw that we will see Ariadne and Cassian again in a sequel I swear I screamed!
So our Rapunzel retelling here has of course a girl with longer hair than my total lifespan and she is locked in a tower (and she has books, she is living the dream) anyway!
Ariadne, a girl who lived in a tower all of her life, was not allowed to go outside and the craziest of them all, she was not only not allowed to cut her hair BUT she was also not allowed to let anyone find her, or she would be in danger.
All these changes of course when our young protagonist meets, Cassian and he turns her world upside down. Making her see that maybe what she is reading in her books is not myths and fairy tales just to pass your time.
The relationship between Cassian and Ariadne felt a bit rushed but it came naturally. This is love at first sight so I am not that disappointed about this although I wish we had more between them.
Can't wait to read the second one, because the ending left me craving (and fearing) for more.
This novella disappointed me so very much. It feels like the author wrote an idea pitch and instead of writing the book, decided to just go ahead and publish it. This story as a book, has so much promise. This story as a novella is very disappointing and falls flat.
I gave it three stars, because overall the author writes well- except for some overly dramatic, flowery language in parts, it is a compelling story- and because the plot really could've been done well. So the three stars, I guess is not for the book I read, but for the potential it could've had.
That's where it ends and everything gets lazy. Ariadne, who, I guess, is arguably the main character, literally does nothing. The plot is handed to her- every tool, every concept, every step is handed to her- mostly by characters who are under developed and come out of literally nowhere.
There is a whole beautiful world that is not ever really established and then not even explored. Everything Ariadne knows, she is told, by people we assume are trustworthy since she follows them blindly. There are so many ways this could've been done through her books and through her caretaker, and then through her travels. I still have no idea how much of the world she entered works and I don't follow the Gate thing and Keepers- and basically, it's all kind of blurry and confusing.
Overall- grossly disappointed, because this could be good- could be REALLY good- but it's not, it's lazy and that's sad.
I received this as an ARC and am leaving this review voluntarily.
Once Upon a Silver Strand is a lovely little novella that offers a fresh, heartfelt take on Rapunzel. At its core, this isn’t just a fairy-tale romance—it's a story about becoming. Ariadne's journey from a quiet, isolated girl in a tower to someone who learns her worth and power is genuinely satisfying, made even richer by the presence of a guardian who believes in her long before she believes in herself. The emotional thread running through the story gives it warmth and depth that lingers after the final page.
The prose is simple but beautifully descriptive, making this an easy and immersive read. Despite the novella length, there’s an impressive amount of worldbuilding woven in, with celestial magic, ancient prophecies, and a tower full of secrets that never feels overwhelming. The characters are easy to like and invest in, especially Ariadne, whose growth feels natural and earned as the story unfolds. Watching her step into her destiny is quietly powerful and very well done.
Yes, it’s YA—but honestly, who doesn't love a fairy tale? This retelling leans into all the things that make the genre comforting and magical; soft romance, hidden strength, and the idea that you were never cursed, only waiting to shine. If you enjoy gentle heroines, brooding guardians, and star-touched magic, this is a charming, satisfying read that absolutely earns its five stars.
This enchanting fairytale novella swept me away from the very first page. I was charmed by the vivid descriptions, lush atmosphere, and the fantastical land of Starna that gave me delicious Lord of the Rings vibes.
While the story was inspired by the fairytale of Rapunzel, the author gave it a completely original twist, as the maiden in the tower finds herself entangled in the magic of the stars, a secret prophecy, and an urgent quest to overthrow a tyrannical king.
Braiding together elements of adventure, magic, and tender romance, I deeply enjoyed this read and look forward to revisiting these characters in the sequel.
This is a delightful story for anyone who loves fairytale retellings and fantasy romance. I can't wait to explore more stories in the author's Enchanted Realms series.
Many thanks to Book Sirens for providing a complimentary ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Ariadne has lived in a tower her whole life. And ever since her caregiver died, she has been alone. Before she died, her caregiver always told her never to leave the tower, as there are men wanting to cut her magical hair for their own gain, which would result in Ariadne going mad, so she stayed in her tower until a man fell from the sky and told her about her prophecy.
The story is an interesting twist on Rapunzel, incorporating intriguing elements, and the writing style flows nicely. I read it in one sitting because of its captivating storytelling and vivid scenes. However, when it comes to the relationship between Ariadne and Cassian, the man who fell from the sky, I felt that it could have been further developed, as it seemed somewhat rushed.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I want to start off by saying this was an ARC read and I’ve done an ARC for this author before. That being said, while I loved the other book I read, I had a harder time getting into this one.
I love the characters’ names, but it felt like their personalities fell sort of flat and seemed one dimensional. The side character of Twill made me laugh though, as she was sassy and so fun! She definitely made this book better for me.
I do think that personally, as I had been hoping for more adventure and problem solving between the characters as we were off to go save this mystical realm, but it felt like every time there was a bump in the road, someone else solved the problem or gave them the answers to solve it.
I personally give this book a 3.5/5. It’s definitely a good book if you like fantasy though.
Once Upon a Silver Strand by Michelle Miles is a fantasy retelling of the fairytale Rapunzel. In this book she is named Ariadne and she lives all alone in a tower, where somehow all things she needs is provided. When during a freak storm a man falls from the sky and tells her he is here to take her home, Ariadne does not believe him at first.
This was such a lovely retelling of Rapunzel, the author made the story completely her own. You can see traces of the original tale in Once Upon a Silver Strand, but it is also a whole other story. I loved it and had a hard time putting the book down. The writing is flowing and the book is easy to read. There is much mystery and unique magic woven into this book.
Once Upon a Silver Strand has been a great surprise to read and I can totally recommend this book to any reader who loves fairytales and retellings.

Synopsis: Kept secreted away in a tower, Ariadne is protected from the outside world and the men who covet the power her magical hair holds. When a man falls from the sky claiming she's the heir to the stars and must return to fulfil his world's prophecy, Ariadne must decide between her tower and what lies beyond.
Review: What a fun twist on Rapunzel! This gave strong Tangled vibes. However, the story felt like a fanfic self-insert squeezed into a fast paced novella, leaving little room for any character growth, and forcing the plot to use convenient situations and rushed decisions. I liked the duel POVs, but found the instalove weird with how naive and sheltered Ariadne was.

Such a wonderful reimagining of Rapunzel. I enjoyed and loved this book so much! There was lots of magic, secrets and suspence, I just could not put this down. When reality came in between, all I wanted to do was go back reading, hehe. This book took me to a different world and dimension. There was a classic fairytale vibe combined with fae and otherworldly realms and starlight. The characters, plot and romance was all fantastic, and the concept of the plot was very creative. Ariadne and Cassian are both well written characters. I definitly recommend to read this one if you have a love for fairytales and enjoy clean romance, fae and otherworldly realms. I received and ARC
I enjoyed this retelling of the fairy tale of Rapunzel. The plot was clever, and the characters were likeable. This was a fast read that I finished in under 90 minutes. Despite being a novella, Ms. Miles was able to pack quite a bit of action and slow build romance and friendship into the book. I'm glad that the reader will get to hear more of Ariadne and Cassian's story in Ms. Miles next book, particularly because this book left me wanting more.

I really enjoyed getting to read this book, it uses the reimaging element of Rapunzel perfectly and still be something original. I was engaged from start to finish and had that in-between element that I wanted from this type of book. Michelle Miles has a strong writing style and I always enjoy the concept of the fairy tale retellings and how the story unfolded. I enjoyed getting to know Ariadne and had that feel that worked in this universe and had that concept that I was looking for.

What a magical read ! I loved this amazing twist on the classic Rapunzel story. Ariadne has a slow burn to her full character and I loved this as it kept you guessing as to what comes next. Having that more magical presence throughout the story, I was routing for the hero's and wishing away the villains. I was taken back to childhood fairytales memories, feeling like I was experiencing every high and low with the characters. I really enjoyed this story and would love to read another Michelle Miles adventure.
Finished this in less than a day! I loved it! Ariadne (love the name) character is shy at first, with good reason, and then meets Cassian (hottie) who tells her about who she really is and what realm she came from. They journey back to that realm but theres of course obstacles in the way, she has little friend named twill she becomes fond of quickly and I love how sassy twill is. Loved the unraveling of the story and the ending ! I squealed ! Can't wait for the sequel!
I absolutely loved this retelling of Rapunzel. The story was steeped in magic, and the world it was set in felt so vivid and enchanting that I didn’t want to leave. The author’s reimagining brought fresh depth to the classic tale, with captivating twists and a setting that sparkled with wonder. I truly hope to revisit this world again. Love it! Ariadne was weighing her options on whether to go, or stay because it isn't safe outside. Cassian told her how he was able to search his way from the Palace. Ariadne is apart of something so magical she doesn't know what her purpose is about. Cassian made the right decision to rescue Ariadne/Starborn because of her moonlight and magic. She has to be protect herself if their lives depend on it. I received an advanced review copy or free, and leaving this review voluntarily.
This is an enchanting and magical fairytale romance. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline. The author did a great job with describing each scene to make you feel as if you were there. As with most fairytales, there is a villain and a battle, but nothing to violent. It is part of a series that can be read as a standalone.I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is a wonderful Rapunzel fairytale retelling! A tale of a girl, Ariadne trapped in a tower so high it touches the stars, with hair that is full of magic and said to be cursed. Cassian is a guardian from the forgotten realm who comes to earth because of a prophecy and finds Ariadne. The author has put their own spin on this fabulous story and you find yourself drawn in with incredible world building and wonderful characters, in this sweet and intriguing read and I loved every minute of it!
The story of Ariadne & Cassian isn't just a rewrite of the Rapunzel story - no Disney songs here! - as it builds the basic theme into a much larger framework.
The main heroine & hero are well-written (appealing yet not perfect) and the addition of Twill has to be read to be appreciated!
A nice addition to the "Enchanted Realms" collection.
(I was fortunate to receive an ARC however the above is, as ever, my own opinion.)
Ariadne had lived in the tower the whole of her life - until Cassian appeared at the base. Could she believe the tale he told her? Could she really get rid of the usurper and free the realm? Loved this re-write of Rap[unzal!.

This book was very enjoyable to read. The only reason it wasn’t a five star read for me was because I could kind of see the ending and the plot twists coming. I prefer to be surprised and caught off guard for books.

Part of an interconnected series that is best if read in order. Some of the characters and storylines continue into another book. Lived secluded for as long as she can remember.
