A Life Worth Living
This book is a short story anthology set in Big Finish Productions' Professor Bernice Summerfield series. Bernice Summerfield appears in many original New Adventures of Doctor Who novels, as well as short stories and other fiction.
Fourteen brand-new short stories about Bernice Summerfield (some-time adventurer, even-less-time academic) and her extended "family". There's Jason Kane (ex-husband, ex-buccaneer, ex-author of xeno-porn) and Irving Braxiatel (employer, Renaissance Man, sneaky devil). There's Bev, Adrian, Ms Jones and Peter. There's Hass, the new gardener, just arrived from Mars. There's the invasion of new students. And, inevitably, there's the mysteries, murders, mayhem and major weirdness that happen whenever Benny gets out of bed.
The war is over. The Braxiatel Collection is back to normal. Better than that, people are all making more of an effort to rebuild, to get on, to re-establish the Collection at the forefront of academic excellence. Benny and Jason are back together. Life is good.

Simon Guerrier
168 books61 followersSimon Guerrier is a British science fiction author and dramatist, closely associated with the fictional universe of Doctor Who and its spinoffs. Although he has written three Doctor Who novels, for the BBC Books range, his work has mostly been for Big Finish Productions' audio drama and book ranges.
Guerrier's earliest published fiction appeared in Zodiac, the first of Big Finish's Short Trips range of Doctor Who short story anthologies. To date, his work has appeared in the majority of the Short Trips collections. He has also edited three volumes in the series, The History of Christmas, Time Signature and How The Doctor Changed My Life. The second of these takes as its starting-point Guerrier's short story An Overture Too Early in The Muses. The third anthology featured stories entirely by previously unpublished writers.
After contributing two stories to the anthology Life During Wartime in Big Finish's Bernice Summerfield range of books and audio dramas, Guerrier was invited to edit the subsequent year's short story collection, A Life Worth Living, and the novella collection Parallel Lives. After contributing two audio dramas to the series, Guerrier became the producer of the Bernice Summerfield range of plays and books, a post he held between January 2006 and June 2007.
His other Doctor Who work includes the audio dramas, The Settling and The Judgement of Isskar, in Big Finish's Doctor Who audio range, three Companion Chronicles and a contribution to the UNIT spinoff series. He has also written a play in Big Finish's Sapphire and Steel range.
Guerrier's work is characterised by character-driven humour and by an interest in unifying the continuity of the various Big Finish ranges through multiple references and reappearances of characters. As editor he has been a strong promoter of the work of various script writers from the Seventh Doctor era of the Doctor Who television series

L'ANGOLO BIG FINISH: “A LIFE WORTH LIVING” (Bernice Summerfield, Antologia 4)

La guerra è finita. La Collezione Braxiatel è tornata alla normalità. Meglio ancora, tutti quanti si stanno sforzando per ricostruire, per andare avanti, per ristabilire la Collezione come avanguardia dell'eccellenza accademica. Benny e Jason sono tornati insieme. La vita è bella.
Non durerà, vero?
In men che non si dica, Benny è sommersa da strane morti, sette sinistre, relazioni sentimentali peculiari e una Collezione piena di gente che non ha ancora smesso di lottare.

A Life Worth Living si colloca nella stagione 5, poco dopo la fine dell'Occupazione del Quinto Asse e lo scontro con i Dalek. Braxiatel ha chiesto a Benny di restare fissa alla Collezione per un intero anno per aiutare nella ricostruzione e nell'apertura della nuova Università. Le storie si concentrano quindi sulla ripresa e sulla vita accademica dei personaggi, su come superare i traumi della guerra e ritornare alla normalità. L'attenzione non è tutta su Benny, ma ci sono storie un po' su tutti, inclusi dei personaggi marginali che ricompariranno in altre antologie. Sono presenti solo 14 storie, e quindi sono tutte di una certa lunghezza. A differenza di A Life of Surprises, i racconti sono in ordine cronologico, a volte anche collegandosi tra loro, e non sono altrettanto surreali, ad eccezione dell'ultimo che rimane libero ad interpretazione.
1. Misplaced Spring (Paul Cornell): La Collezione accoglie l'arrivo degli studenti della nuova Università, ma non tutti i membri dello staff ne sono felici, ancora scossi dall'Occupazione. La storia si concentra su quasi tutti i personaggi principali, dando una visione di insieme delle loro reazioni.
2. Welcome to the Machine (Sin Deniz): Una nuova e timida accademica, Jess Carter, cerca di integrarsi, ma è tormentata da uno stalker. Questo è uno di quei personaggi marginali che ritorneranno più avanti, e se avessi letto prima questa antologia la sua menzione in Something Changed mi avrebbe colpito di più.
3. Final Draft (Cameron Mason): Un divertente racconto in cui Benny si ritrova a dover riscrivere un'intera presentazione all'ultimo minuto, tra la frustrazione di essere continuamente interrotta.
4. Against Gardens (Eddie Robson): Ha come protagonista Hass, il nuovo giardiniere marziano, che oltre a trovarsi male con il nuovo lavoro deve anche fare i conti con una forza misteriosa che sta influenzando il giardino.
5. A Summer Affair (Joseph Lidster): Ms Jones non riesce a superare la morte del suo amato, fino a quando incontra Ronan. L'ho trovato commovente, con un finale inquietante si va a ricollegare a The Crystal of Cantus.
6. Denial (Ian Mond): Benny si scontra con uno studioso negazionista di un olocausto, che con la sua visione estremista tocca un tasto dolente in un momento in cui tutti sono ancora traumatizzati dall'Occupazione.
7. Sex Secrets of the Robot Replicants (Philip Purser-Hallard): Ne ho parlato nella recensione di The Two Jasons. Riguarda la carriera da scrittore di Jason e una serie di critici che gli somigliano molto.
8. The Blame of the Nose (Ben Woodhams): Benny indaga sulla morte di un accademico, temendo possa essere involontariamente causa sua.
9. Reparation (Gregg Smith): Incentrato principalmente su Bev e Adrian, che qui per la prima volta hanno un po' di tempo per legare, racconta della loro missione di riportare un'opera d'arte al suo legittimo proprietario dopo che era stata sottratta dal Quinto Asse. Vengono anche affrontati temi sociali come il colonialismo.
10. Nothing Up My Sleeve (Richard Salter): Una fratellanza di maghi fa di tutto per nascondere i segreti del mestiere.
11. Buried Alive (Kate Orman): Unica storia ambientata fuori dalla Collezione, in cui Benny parte da sola per una spedizione. È narrato in seconda persona, con un'alternanza di flashback, e l'ho trovata un po' difficile da leggere.
12. There Never Need Be Longing In Your Eyes (Ian Farrington): Benny affida Peter ad un asilo, ma vuoi mettere che qualcosa non andasse per il verso giusto?
13. Mentioning the War (Nick Walters): Una studiosa vuole fare degli scavi su KS-159 per trovare i resti dell'Occupazione, ma Benny è preoccupata che riaprirà vecchie ferite.
14. Fragments (Stewart Sheargold): La storia più criptica di tutte: Benny trova dei frammenti di un romanzo che forse sarà destinata a scrivere in futuro. La stranezza è che questi estratti sono vagamente basati sulla sua vita, e a seconda di come li interpretiamo sembrano preannunciare qualcosa di oscuro.

Complessivamente questa antologia mi ha stupita meno di quanto mi aspettassi, ma le storie sono molto belle e sono utili a delineare un periodo di transizione (leggendo le storie successive mi ero ritrovata con molti buchi). Mi sono piaciute le interazioni tra i personaggi e i temi trattati, che a volte diventano un po' cupi andando ad affrontare la depressione, le riflessioni etiche e morali, i traumi e le conseguenze della guerra, ma a cui va ad aggiungersi l'ottimismo per il futuro. È certamente una raccolta indispensabile all'interno della serie.

This was such a delightful read and I loved every moment reading it.
This book takes place before Crystal of Cantus but holds a lot of important details for the Braxiatel/Crystal of Cantus arc.
There were SO Many moments of Braxiatel/Benny in this book that I absolutely adored. I laughed and grinned and mentally screamed in my head at these dorks.
Bernice Summerfield is always a universe that comforts me and I could go back to any time. I love it so much.

This novel looks at the aftermath of the occupation, and how all the characters are dealing with it. There are some interesting stories that move the narrative along. A good read.
