You can find the full review and more about this book on my blog!

First, when I found out this book, though my best friend here Maria,I was really intrigued by the cover. It is simple but it's awesome.I really dig the draw-type of picture and the way the blood drops. It's so cool and it prepares you for what the book will be.And believe me the book was as great as the cover!

description

The Replacement is a thriller, detective and murders kind of thriller.A novel worth the read.It is everything a book should be.It has action(which was the best part of the book),it has crime drama, smart talks, friendship, emotions and some pretty crazy murder scenes.

Things I enjoyed:

1.The main character.Patrick Sullivan is a very realistic characters. And I liked him because of that.He was not the nowdays MC,perfect in every kind of way,he had flaws and dealt with them, and he really developed, and that's what I really like to read in a book.

2.The murder scenes. The Surgeon was a sick killer but it really made the book way more interesting. The scenes were the parts I always looked forward to read more.

3.The dialogues.Conversations between Sullivan and Hawkins were smart and enjoyable.

4.The ending(But I will not spoil anything,don't worry)

Things that bothered me:

1. The pointless description. This book is very long for it's plot.I was good, but I really think it would have been even better if it was shorter, and some parts were cut, because sometimes it felt like the story was going nowhere and it was boring.

2. It was predictable.I knew who was the killer like half way of the book and even that I still liked the ending I already knew somehow how it was going to end.

I highly recommend this book to every reader out there,it is awesome crime drama, and if you like that you should pick this up:)

This book marks the beginning of a new era for me. Normally I have had a pretty bad closure problem when it came to books, so it was a rare occurrence that I would ever put down a book before it was finished. I also had a perverse sense of loyalty that even if I posted a negative I could at least do the author the service of reading the entirety of their work.

But no more! The new me will post brief notes on why I decided to move on, then I will move on.

So what happened with The Replacement?

1. Started with a dream sequence, which demonstrated all the reasons a novel should not open this way. The dream established the main character as a grizzled, bad-coffee drinking, short-fused cop working the mean streets of New York. When he awoke he was a personable trainee detective living in the burbs, with a perfect house, wife and child. Then we were subjected to a gratuitous exposition about the MC's sex life. No thanks.

2. The author handled a homosexual suspect (no pun intended) incredibly poorly, both from an open-minded and writerly perspective. The suspect was described around 3 times as "having that look that many homosexuals do" leaving me wondering a. what the look actually was and b. whether there was some look out there that was common knowledge and this wasn't offensive.

3. Numerous police procedural cliche/errors like lab results being available overnight, the detectives making leaps of logical that would make no sense (unless they knew they were in a novel) like connecting murders with no evidence other than they are both brutal

4. The last straws where finding out the MC had around 3 traumatic past issues bubbling under the surface, and I was starting to loose track/interest

Pellegrini made a good effort with this novel, and I appreciate the giveaway allowing me the opportunity to read and review, but unfortunately the final piece is strong evidence that many self-published works need less aggressive marketing and more aggressive editing

In The Replacement we follow homicide detectives Patrick Sullivan and his partner Jonathan Hawkins, on a hunt for a sadistic serial killer, who we will come to know as "The Surgeon."

This was a very suspenseful and intriguing ride to say the least. There were quite a few emotional scenes. Some happy...others that will make you cringe. Many ghosts from the past to be dealt with and many new ones to be had by the time you're done.

This is not one for all. There are very graphic, gory scenes and is intended for adults only. Don't want to give away to much, so no more spoilers from me.

All in all, this was very detailed and well written. Great characters and amazing story line.
Thanks again to Jason Pellegrini, for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review. It was indeed a privilege and I sincerely wish you all the best on your debut.

I must say that sometimes I come across a story that touches me deeply and stays with me for a long time, which is the case with this book.
The Replacement took me on an exciting & emotional journey!  Having felt like I had lived this story and been with the characters, I find myself at a loss when I was done reading.

Kudos to Jason Pellegrini for a well written, original & powerful debut novel!!
I look forward to reading his next book.

5 unsettling stars!

First off, let me start by saying this one is good, really good. What a great debut novel. The MC was very human and believable, with all the flaws that go along with being human. He was also a little nuts,as shown by how he's haunted by the ghosts of his past, but I digress. The supporting characters were great as well. The murders were gruesome. It was just a really good crime drama. One thing of note, the author used a bit of foreshadowing that reminded me of Stephen King, which is a big plus.

I do think it was a bit lengthy. I think it could be edited down and made even better, but some people love hyper-detailed writing, so that's just my opinion. I also have to admit I saw the big revelation coming, although the novel isn't what I'd call predictable. I also thought the ending was a bit dismaying, but understandable and sadly realistic.

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone who likes crime dramas or suspense novels. Fans of Thomas Harris and the Hannibal novels would probably especially enjoy this one. Even though it was a bit lengthy, it reads pretty quickly, so it doesn't drag much. I'm interested to see what Jason Pellegrini writes next!

Review: THE REPLACEMENT by Jason Pellegrini

I totally loved the reader's hook, which immediately pulled me in and kept me captive, wondering constantly "Reality? Dream? Reality?" and truly, that slippery perception continues throughout the book with "this is too bad to be true" alternating with "I know this is too good to be true!" I love to find a mystery-within-a-mystery (I'm not a born conspiracy theorist for nothing) so THE REPLACEMENT kept my motor humming right along. Great going in a first-time novel.

Oftentimes violent with plenty of gore, author Jason Pellegrini weaves a harrowing tale about a man both searching for a killer and trying to escape his past.

Patrick Sullivan left the NYPD after a violent case that continues to haunt him. Having left the city and relocated to the 'burbs, he once again finds himself working as a cop. As a newly minted detective, Patrick has been assigned to a murder case, the likes of which he's never seen despite working amidst the crime of the city for so long. As the investigation unfolds, it seems the initial murder isn't quite done with. Many more murders are taking place, each one more disturbing than the last, and it's up to Patrick and his new partner to solve the case(s). Once again working as a cop, Patrick starts experiencing more and more flashbacks of the incident that haunts him. No matter how far away he moves, no matter how much time passes, Patrick can't seem to outrun the demons from his past. Patrick's mind is a fragile thing, the demons won't let him be and with such an all-consuming case laid before him, things aren't looking so good for Patrick Sullivan.

As I've stated before, The Replacement is a violent and gory tale about murder, but there's also a bit of a human element with Patrick struggling with his mental state. His past haunts him, unpredictably of course, and it was quite sad to see him plagued on a daily basis and fighting for clarity. That's not to say the entire story was bleak and depressing. Pellegrini managed to infuse a bit of brightness into his story with Patrick's relationship with his family, particularly his wife. Their love and support of one another was quite realistic, and it was nice to have that little bit of brightness in such a dark tale.

As far as the storytelling goes, this is one of those instances where a little editing goes a long way. There's no doubt that Pellegrini can weave a good yarn, but for me, much of what should have been a fast-paced and suspenseful narrative was bogged down with punctuation. Semicolons, parentheses, commas galore all served to slow down the story. With a bit of polish, a bit of reconfiguring and chopping of excess punctuation and repetition, there's no doubt in my mind that The Replacement would rate a solid 4+ in the star-rating system. As a debut author, Jason Pellegrini shows such great potential to deliver everything I expect in a thriller and I'm certainly looking forward to any additional books he publishes to see how he grows as an author.

3.5 stars. Recommended for thriller readers who like a heavy dose of gore and murder, which The Replacement delivered in spades :)

**Many thanks to the author for providing a review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Introducing Jason Pellegrini & his debut novel: "The Replacement". At first glance you might think this book fits quite comfortably on the Psychological Thriller bookshelf, & it does. But its much more deeper than that. It's a story about a man who wages a battle between his inner sense of fairness & justice vs. an almost uncontrolled desire for revenge that drove him to the brink of his own survival once before. All of this takes place as Patrick Sullivan joins Jonathan Hawkins (the deputy who is being forced to retire from a career that is his life &'who Patrick will be replacing) in a race to catch a Serial Killer that grips a town in terror w/ his ever deepening depth of sadistic cruelty.

But while Patrick & Hawkins hunt "the Surgeon" & the body count keeps growing, Patrick himself is being hunted. He's hunted by the demons from his past mistakes who haunt him in his sleep, by a growing & lethal rage that threatens to destroy the two most important people in his life & a crippling suspicion of his "new" partner which only feeds his rage.

I could not put this book down. Pellegrini wove four stories seamlessly into one breathtaking story w/ no loose ends & I can't wait to see what he writes next!

My opinion
I have to admit, that I liked the book early on. I loved the characterisations of Patrick and his wife, the descriptions of his family life, especially his son were just adorable. I also remember that I was curiuos, how this story would develop which made me read the book in every free minute. The collegues of Patrick were very well developed, the had interesting back stories and character, I couldn’t help but like them.

I didn’t like Hawkins, because I think the author didn’t want the reader to like this person. It took me some time to get to the first murder scence, which was just gruesome for me. I had to stop reading because I was actually feeling sick to my stomach while reading the detailed description of the murder victims. And this was also the time where I first considered tos top reading Patrick’s Story. I came back though because I wanted to know more about this case, I wanted to see the killer caught and brought to justice. Needless to say, that there are more murders, more incompetence by the law enforcement, because one person just couldn’t get over himself and listen to a younger co-worker. I really wanted to punch this guy!

I loved Claire, Patrick’s wife. She was always so understanding and trying to help her husband whenever she was able to. But I have to admit, as much as I loved the story and the characters, the whole description of violence was too graphic for me. The writing style was great, I got sucked into the story before I knew it, but I always had a strange feeling and was dreading the next vicitm because I feared that the detailed description would make me sick. This is the reason why I give this book only three out of five stars, because I loved the characters, I loved the writing style and I am pretty sure, that I am going to read the next book this author will write.

Patrick Sullivan is a cop with a haunted past who is making a comeback to the police force after a forced hiatus. He begins work as a homicide detective as the replacement for retiring detective Jonathan Hawkins and is thrown into the investigation of the gruesome murder of an old married couple. When the detectives catch another murder case with some similar features, they realize they are now on the hunt for a serial killer, dubbed "the Surgeon". Patrick and Jonathan clash during the investigation, as Patrick tries to live up to expectations and the fact that "he was replacing the person who just so happened to be a messiah to these men."

Bits of Patrick's past are slowly revealed throughout the narrative, giving us a glimpse into his motivations. The book is more a character study than an action thriller. Unfortunately, I found Patrick to be an unlikable character, with no redeeming qualities and prone to introspection. His relationship with wife Claire and son Connor is practically non-existent, made even more unbelievable after we find out how Patrick and Claire first met.

While the story itself is interesting, there are many editing errors, especially with punctuation (apostrophes, commas, semicolons). The prose is flowery and full of rhetoric and clichéd similes and metaphors. The narrative needs more dialogue, as we are more often told what has been said, rather than hearing it for ourselves. The story also needs to be edited for length - it is overly long, with too much repetition and unnecessary passages. In addition, I guessed the identity of the Surgeon early on in the story, so even the suspense aspect was lost on me.

Nevertheless, this is a good read if you can see past these shortcomings.

Warnings: coarse language, sex scenes, graphic violence.

I received this book in return for an honest review.

"Patrick was viciously ripped from his safe haven; dragged back to harsh reality, like an angel being expelled from heaven and thrown back to the plain of humanity, where it would be forced to walk among such ugliness after knowing such divine beauty."

This is essentially how I'm feeling sitting here trying to dissect how I feel after reading this novel. It was both beautiful and ugly. I feel angry, devastated, relieved, yet excited. I'm excited because I've had such a hard time finding a novel of this genre to feel intensely about. Most books of this genre feel flat to me (Hell yes I'm looking at you,
James Patterson - sorry not sorry).

For a debut novel I found it to be disturbingly stunning.

NOTE TO SELF-PUBLISHERS (new or old): If you do NOT want to put $ out for copyeditor or prof. proofreader, PLEASE ask a few "Eagle-eyed" friends/acquaintances/fans to thoroughly review for excessive typos, extra inserted or omitted words, incorrectly added or missing endings (usually -S or -ed, etc.), etc. Unless, of course, it's an ARC.

OK, off my PSA/soapbox...I'm rating a 3 b/c author is new, self-published & donating 1/2 proceeds (of ed. I purchased) to charity PLUS I can see he is talented & some parts were really good & made me want to keep reading to find out where it was going or what happened, beyond the fact that I paid for it. Also, early I sensed & by 1/2 convinced I knew killer until 3/4 when I though it was a red herring, but I was right AND author is from & book is set in my sister-town/neighboring state--which not being big city or small quaint town, we rarely if ever get the pleasure! Having said all that, the beginning over 1/3 through was very slowly paced (which some may prefer, just not my pref.) & for at least the main character, Patrick Sullivan, he was described & developed, and described & developed some more & then some more (so for all those ppl that like to complain a book lacks character development, this book is for YOU!). At first I was more tolerable b/c I was thinking it must be b/c it's being set up for a series or at least a triology, HOWEVER, by the way it ended, it doesn't seem like that is the case. So a little frustrating esp. since at the end a lot of it is repeated & even taken further (& yes some of it was nec.) BUT if you are going to such detail at end, then much of beginning 1/4 to 1/3 could have been condensed. Also, I get frustrated when authors assume readers aren't very intelligent or aren't paying attention and repeat various things over & over & over but I need to get over it right. I look forward to future work as this author grows & fine tunes his craft.

A yr after Patrick has a violent altercation w/a "major NYC drug lord" (no need to remember b/c u will be beat over the head w/it frequently) and Patrick is unexpectedly, returning as an active duty homicide detective in a neighboring district in order to replace a 35+ yr legend (Jonathan Hawkins) forced to retire due to health issues & temporarily partner w/him and his long time partner (Carl Murphy) for his last two months in service. Day 1 for Patrick begins w/the murder of an elderly couple then leads into a serial killer situation. Since I just read Tess Gerritsen's The Surgeon a little over a month ago, it had similarities to that from new detective & immediate murder-turned-serial situation by a killer using surgical tools (although different victims & murder style) and ultimately dubbed by law enforcement/media The Surgeon/Long Island Surgeon, then only connection b/w victims where recent admissions to a local hospital SO docs & staff are investigated only to learn that's the wrong road. However, the background, the actual killer and reason for the serial killings AND how caught are NOT similar and are good in both cases.

Biggest pet peeve that IMHO opinion is impt esp. b/c of impt & stressful job Patrick has, deadly situation incurred on & off the job AND our culture toward counseling, therapy & anything mental health related AND author even set up possibilities by saying in Epilogue...(para.) "...happily ever after...is a pleasant concept for stories.." so (spoilerish)

Ace On The River

Well, well, well, what can I say about this book. Now, if you follow my reviews I'm a fan of horror and female private investigators ( don't judge ) So when Jason Pellegrini reached out to me to read his debut novel I can honestly say that it wasn't a book I would have read normally. ( however, I'd like to point out that being in communication with the Author didn't, in any way, effect my review )

Well! This book is amazing! It has everything you'd need. Love, horror, thriller, murder, revenge. A broken man is our hero, a disgraced cop looking to start his life again. Starting again in the homicide department, he is immediately thrown into the deep end with a horrific murder scene, he is faced with ending this gruesome and seemingly endless storm of inventively violent murders, while establishing himself in his new position.

Each character is very unique and three dimensional, even background characters are developed, and the events are so well described your almost there with them. I use the motto

' A good story teller isn't always a good writer, and I good writer isn't always a good story teller'

Jason Pellegrini is definitely both. If this is really a debut novel then this author is definitely one to watch, and this book is definitely my best read of 2015 so far. Kept me guessing right up until the end. This isn't an Ace of the River, you don't need to wait with hope that the book will ' get good', you'll be hooked almost immediately. So, rush to amazon and buy this book, you won't regret it.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Jason Pellegrini's debut brings to mind one of my favorite authors: Stephen King. I'm not just referring to the graphic murder material (of which there is plenty) but more so the intelligent writing and incredibly strong character growth. I also truly enjoyed Pellegrini's ability to make this story highly plausible, unlike the "over-the-top" murder/mystery novels which unfortunately plague the genre. Lastly, Jason Pellegrini is a man of great detail which plays a crucial role when writing a story with this complexity. Having the location set in Long Island, NY, also gave the novel a vibe similar to Nelson DeMille's 'Plum Island.' Overall a stellar debut and I'm looking forward to more from this emerging author.

Graphic and gory, brutality is a crucial component of the story. The violence is not gratuitous. Strong characterization complements the tight plot. Jason painted an accurate picture of New York. Because of a few awkward sentences I’d rate this a 4.8 star-reading. But I can’t give that rating, so I’ve rounded it up, knowing Jason will complete another round of edits. For a debut, this book was exceptional, and I’d definitely read more of Jason Pelligrini’s books.

The Replacement by Jason Pellegrini is absolutely a thrilling must read for readers everywhere. Highly captivating plot and unique twists that will lead readers straight into the heart of all the danger. A serial killer playing with two cops minds and aways ahead of them. Can the two cops, one having been retired brought back on and the other a homicide cop, bring the killer to a stop before things get worse not only for the dead victims bt for the two new partners as well. This brilliant novel has enough suspense to keep readers lured in to the end. But how will it all end? Especially when the two partner are fighting with each other? And who is the serial killer? Will the two cops always be behind the serial killer or will they finally be able to out to the killer? And how?

Jason Pellegrini has a way with writing that brings his dangerous world alive and off the pages. Readers can never be bored with his fast paced and adventurous world. finding out who the killer is, is indeed hard to guess as readers follow both characters as they try to solve the case before more chaos happens. I highly recommend following Patrick Sullivan and his partner Jonathan Hawkins as they work together in bringing down the serial killer. This is indeed one interesting and very intriguing novel that readers won’t want to miss out on reading. Overall, I rate The Replacement a five out of five stars.

This book had a lot of great potential moments for me that didnt pan out nearly as well as they could have. I didn't like Patrick and it was really hard to after the opening sequence. I didn't get to know the other characters besides Claire long enough to care for them. Couldn't get the image of Flava Flav out of my head everytime Baby Tooth was brought into the storyline (a bit too often). Baby Tooth could have possibly been removed from this whole story and it would have been the same. The book was an easy read through though. 400 pages kinda threw me at first. But it flew by. It was shockingly violent and brutal but I wish that had played out better. By the end you are hardly thinking of how intricate the murder scenes were and lost more in a dramatic relationship scuffle between Patrick and The Surgeon. I pinned the Surgeon too quickly also and was really hoping since I had so much inclination that there would be a crazy twist...I was not given a twist.
I wish the Epilogue was not part of the book also. It really didn't add any substance.
I liked the way the plot started and the serial killer idea... just wished it played out different.

The Replacement is a great debut by an author who has really good instincts. It was refreshing to see a detective who is constantly on the edge instead of the wise-cracking, "all-about-the-game" detectives we're used to. Patrick's sense of connection to the victims was very compelling.

At times, Baby Tooth and Claire both felt like caricatures to me. I would have liked to have gotten to know Claire more. As well, sometimes I was pulled out of the story by the writing style. It slowed down the narrative too much especially in the first half of the book. This happened less frequently in the second half and the final confrontation was well written and exciting.

All in all I can say I was very interested in knowing what happened to each character. This is a great effort by a promising first time author and I can't wait to read more of Pellegrini's work.

In The Replacement, the author takes us on trip with many twists and turns. I kept trying to guess what would happen next and was often surprised in what happened. It was a book that I could not put down and I felt like I needed to know what would happen to each character.

If you are looking for something suspenseful, this is the book for you. There were a few gory scenes so not for the faint at heart. The ending was better than the ending of most books I have read and it left me wondering what would happen next when the book was finished.

As I do different reviews, I find myself becoming accustomed to doing PROS and CONS for the books I read. However, I found it more difficult than usual to give my PROS and CONS for this book. I’m actually going to do the CONS first. So! Here goes…

CONS
As I stated in one of my updates when reading this novel was my issue with the errors. There were just so, so many. I lost track of them and it took away the crisp, finished product feel for me (like a published novel should have) as if the book was not properly and thoroughly edited. Again, I’ve been an English major (twice) so I pick up on these things since I used to edit writing material myself so I easily found these mistakes and in some parts, there were actually the wrong names used. For example, when Hawkins was talking, Patrick’s name was used and that totally confused me, so I found the editing an issue for me.

About 1/3 through the book, I figured out who the Surgeon was. That took SO SO SO much of the book away for me. All of it made sense, from the title to the murders to the explanation of the Surgeon, everything I figured out. I wanted to be wrong and at some part of the book, I actually thought I was wrong, but I wasn’t and that made me feel as if the book was predictable. Maybe I’ve read too many “whodunnits” or something, I don’t know, but the fact I figured that all out not even halfway through the book, was upsetting and so I had to take at least one star away for that reason.

I understand the dreams and why Patrick had them. However, I found them to be too long at some parts and that took away from the story. The dreams were just drawn out and I wanted them to end. EXCEPT for one. There is one that I found completely necessary and that I understood, but the others…not so much. I get that the dreams were vivid and Patrick was going through psychological trauma from his past, but at some points I just didn’t think they were necessary…or at least not as much that was provided. That’s also just my opinion.

Patrick—His character seemed constantly overwhelmed and extremely angry and at constant conflict with himself, which you don’t usually see in a main character. I found it hard to relate to him as the reader. I found it difficult to connect with Patrick, his emotions, his ghosts, everything. I tried to put myself in his position and I still couldn’t relate. Yes, he’s the hero, but he seemed to get away with his actions (which were both bad and illegal) and still, he doesn’t go to jail and he has these nightmares? It all just seemed a little unrealistic.

Baby Tooth— Although I somewhat found Baby Tooth to be comical, I also didn’t understand why he was necessary. I understand Patrick’s guilt and not coming to terms with his past, but I don’t understand the ghosts. Plus, Baby Tooth kept saying he was trying to help Patrick so I assumed that in some way in the book Baby Tooth would actually play a role in the case and he didn’t.

Another few things that irritated me are the explanations of things AFTER something else has happened (trying not give away any spoilers here). The popping in and out of reality in the book. Something would happen and the reader has no clue what’s going on (reality) so then an explanation is given to un-confuse the reader (pop out of reality) and then we go right back to the current happenings (reality). Those parts were just…not well thought out in my opinion. I’m also just not sure about the ending either. It wasn’t necessarily a happy ending, but also not a bad one?

PROS
One of my favorite shows of all time is Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU). I have seen every episode, I know every ending, every character, and I can even repeat word for word some parts/scenes. As I read this book, I couldn’t help as picture it as a really long Law and Order: SVU episode! Maybe that’s just me and my adoration/obsession for this show, but I pictured Patrick as Stabler and Hawkins as some different guy…someone as a guest appearance on the show or something. The murder scenes, the tracking of the Long Island Surgeon, the problems the detectives came across in search for the Surgeon, the visits to the medical examiner (which reminded me of Melinda from the show) everything about the book reminded me of a Law and Order: SVU episode. I have never had a book do that for me and for that I immediately bumped this debut novel back up to 4 stars (otherwise I’d give it 3 or 3.5 stars).

The character development was interesting….Very interesting and I loved it. As Patrick and his story unfolded, all the characters come to life as does the drama, death, and horrific events. I feel as if these characters are based from actual real life characters from the author’s life because they seemed so real. I loved almost every character of this novel. In addition to the character development, the scenes are described in almost perfect detail as far as the murders, emotions, and accuracy are concerned. There wasn’t too much or too little in terms of the imagery provided. I loved it. I LOVED how gory the murders were because they made the book more interesting. I think they were the parts of the book where I was reading insanely fast, just flipping through the pages like crazy, I was so anxious to know about this crazy Long Island Surgeon man.

The climax was the best part of the novel. I just kept thinking FINALLY. Overall, the book had a creative concept, creative characters, and a creative twist to it. I think maybe the approach was off for me. I think my favorite character of this novel was Claire. I think her character brought the necessary kindness, calmness, and understanding needed for a character like Patrick.
& If I had to recommend the novel, I definitely would.

For a first novel was a good beginning, I liked the MC, his struggle with the past and the changes that he suffered during the development of the story. I wasn't expecting the details about the crimes, so it was a surprise to me. The only thing is that I knew who the killer was in the middle of the story, I think it was pretty obvious and that took away the emotion of the plot. I like the end because I love the redemption arcs and I don't like the characters die. I already read "Booth" and you can see the changes in the writing, it has improved from this work. Now I have to wait for the next book.

Wow-ee. I have quite a few things to say about The Replacement, and will most definitely get to all of them. First things first: AMAZING! I'm blown away at how well this novel was put together. I was gripped from page one and it did not let go easily. I'm very impressed with Pellegrini's writing, and for a first book, this one excelled. Thank you for this lovely piece, Jason!

I will quickly note that, although this review will contain criticism, I mean it in the most productive of ways. I want nothing but success for Jason and his books. I only want to be helpful.

Right off the bat, I want to praise his descriptions. He had many complicated storylines and scenes in his book, but his on-point descriptions left me feeling thrilled/nervous/kind of sick to my stomach (in the best of ways). This type of book is more mystery than I had expected, but you are hearing no complaints from me. He totally Ace'd it (hahahahaha... hah. ha....... hahahahaha). His character dev. could have used a bit more attention, as I really didn't know what some of the characters looked like in detail, but that leaves room for my imagination.

The story was so good... so good. It was riveting and thrilling and shocking and quite lovely, for what it was revolving around. Honestly, I kid you not, I felt sick to my stomach at certain parts and that made me fall in love with this title even more. If a thriller/mystery/horror can physically alter me... A+. I'm so happy to see a fresh face in this genre. I hope Jason can kick every other author's butt (other than King... because I think he has some type of rule over it??? Hail King, anyway).

Now onto some touchy subject matter...

I am very understanding of the errors in this book, as he is a first time author. However, there are some grammatical situations and things that could be altered or removed altogether to improve upon the contents of the pages. I tend to cringe when authors use "overly enthusiastic" dialogue, especially in adult fiction (eg. multiple exclamation marks!!, using ALL CAPS TO EMPHASIZE LOUD DIALOGUE, etc.). One exclamation mark here and there is fine and dandy, but overuse tends to ruin a conversation between characters for me. I feel like it takes away the serious nature of it (Jason tended to use exclamation marks to portray a character's negative emotion [anger, annoyance, frustration] and the use of the exclamation took away from that).

Another note to make is there were a few instances where "predictions" were made in the novel, usually at the end of a chapter ("...as it was proven later on, it wouldn't matter who secured the area" p. 263). I can 110% understand where he was coming from while writing these parts, but they are unnecessary. We will see later on, and it will be an amazing time to read. As readers, we don't want any spoilers as to what happens. We want to be totally shocked, and these types of situations reduce the shock factor because the author already told us that shock will happen.

Also, no need to constantly repeat character's full names. We remember, don't fret! :)

Overall, The Replacement was an amazing first-time book for Jason. I'm really proud over what he has created, and cannot wait for his next book. If you are a Stephen King/Joe Hill/Josh Malerman/Jo Nesbo fan, I highly, strongly, fully recommend you pick this one up (which you can do here: https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Ja...). I also want to give a huge thanks to him, as he sent me a lovely signed copy even though I live in the dark abyss that is Canada.

See you next time, Jason! ;)

There are novels that feel like your just reading a book, then are some that make you feel like you are actually watching a story unfold before your eyes, Like you've left your body behind on the couch, and you're witnessing the events happening to people you don't know. The Replacement is the latter of these two novels. I read it in two sittings, and that wasn't my intentions, what-so-ever. I just got so sucked up in the story, I lost track of time. I then made my mother read it, and she loved it. She finished it over the long Labor Day weekend. Once she finished, she passed it on to one of her friends. I've accepted the fact that I will have to purchase a new copy of the book, because my original will just be passed on from person to person.

The characters in this story, even the secondary ones, have such depth to them. Giving a damn about characters can be so hit or miss in literature. Jason Pellegrini hit the mark in this aspect of his storytelling. The strong characters only fuel they already strong plot. The story itself in nonstop. There's never a moment where you feel like that story is dragging. The rich plot added to the fact you care so much about the people that are living through these events makes up the perfect scenario for a book that will keep you up all night.

There were a few freshman mistakes and issues that I'm certain Jason Pellegrini will shed as he puts out more works. If I hadn't already known, and you had told me The Replacement was Jason Pellegrini's debut novel after I read it, I wouldn't have believed you. The story was that strong. I'd say his character development and foreshadowing is on par with Stephen King.

I look forward to this brand new author's next release, and it will undoubtedly shoot to the top of my to-read list upon its release. If you want to feel utterly satisfied after you have finished a novel, I urge you to READ THE REPLACEMENT!!

I purchased this book straight from the author who was kind enough to send me a signed copy!

The storyline follows a new homicide detective, Patrick Sullivan who is about to start working for the Nassau County Police Department to replace veteran Detective, and favorite Jonathan Hawkins. Patrick is happily married with a beautiful child and has a seemingly perfect life. But he is constantly plagued with nightmares and visions of his past job and the people he had to take down including a drug lord, Baby Tooth Freewater who haunts him constantly. As he struggles with his past he is brought in to a new homicide case where a sadistic serial killer is on the loose and is taking down victims one by one leaving gruesome and macabre crime scenes. Not only does Patrick have to find the killer but he has to get along with his new partners and the one hard headed detective he is to replace.

I really enjoyed this book. The storyline was fast paced with lots of action and there was never a dull moment. I think my favorite parts of the book were Patrick's nightmares. They were extremely vivid and somewhat disturbing but they really showed how haunted this man was by his past. The crime scenes had me dropping my jaw a few times. Very bloody and very disturbing. My only issue with the story was that it was a little overly descriptive at parts and some areas could have been worded differently to help the dialogue flow a little better. A great read though and a great first novel! I anticipate Jason Pellegrini's next book!

I received an ARC in return for an honest review. Ok, got that out of the way…

I really enjoyed this book, the plot was original and very engaging. I would have given another half a star, but I felt that sometimes the author would get a little distracted with the writing style. It comes across similar to film noir, the main character is easily compared to the classic gumshoe. This is fine but sometimes it feels like the author is trying too hard to bring that across. It tends to take you out of the story. That said, I found the story and characters compelling enough to ignore that. I didn’t want to stop reading; I wanted to get to the resolution.

I won’t spoil the ending, but I will say that I went back and forth for a while after finishing, liking it, and then hating it, back and forth until ultimately landing on liking it. The ending was satisfying in a real life sort of way. I realize that is pretty vague, but I really don’t want to give too much away.

All in all, definitely a great accomplishment for a first time author!

A hard hitting gritty novel following the relocation of Patrick Sullivan to the homicide unit where he not only has to work fast to find a serial killer but has to fight his demons to survive.

The author touches on the human side of being a homicide detective, the problems it brings to the home life and the demons it creates. A page turning roller coaster ride which keeps the reader involved all the way through. You find yourself trying to find out who the serial killer is, feeling that you are there in the background of every crime scene, living every moment of the detectives life and sharing his love and disappointments.

An excellent read and full of hard hitting action and I can't wait to find out what awaits Patrick Sullivan in future publications. Anyone who likes page turning action which takes you down to the streets then this is the novelist for you.
