The warring island kingdoms of Calidore and Jardia are thrown into chaos when Calidore’s once prized, but now quite possibly half-mad, seer announces that young gravedigger Rigan North will one day capture the heart of the crown prince of Jardia—and lead Jardia to victory against Calidore. Together, Rigan and the prince will rid the Twin Kingdoms of the Shro Khan—deadly, mind-controlling monsters that terrorize the people on sand and at sea.
Desperate to maintain his stranglehold on power and prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled, the king of Calidore sends a troop of soldiers led by the legendary Aureus Corcoran to kidnap Rigan. Corcoran, who is rumored to be able to communicate with the Khan, wonders how this unremarkable, frustrating girl could ever ensnare the attentions of a would-be king even as he admires her clever attempts to escape him. But when her fiery ways and unexpected kindnesses begin to claim Corcoran’s heart, prompting him to second-guess his orders, he wonders how the prophecy could ever come true—until he learns that not only is he far more than he believed himself to be, but she may be too.
Jasmine’s writing dream began with the anthology of zoo animals she painstakingly wrote and illustrated at age five, to rather limited acclaim. Thankfully, her writing (but not her drawing) has improved since then. She is a clinically-trained psychologist but no, she cannot read your mind. When she isn’t killing defenseless house plants, Jasmine enjoys devouring books, dabbling in floristry, playing the piano, eating peanut butter out of the jar, and wishing it rained more often. Jasmine is married to David, and together they make their home a couple of hours’ north of Sydney, Australia, where they live to satisfy the every whim of their ginger overlord cat, Simba.
In The Nightingale Trilogy, Fischer laid a wonderful foundation in Calor and then built a beautiful story with fabulous characters from there in the next 2 books. It is one of my favorite Christian fantasies!
In The Heart of the King, I see Fischer doing the same thing. While this story may be seen as more complete than Calor was, based on the end of the book, we have quite an interesting read coming up in book two! She laid the foundation, and I think the main story is yet to come. I hate that I have to wait!
I enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the plot. Fischer introduces us to Rigan (FMC) and Corcoran (MMC) and sets them on a path of healing and discovery. They are realistically written and given a solid backstory from which to act. The setting is rich, but I did find it a little confusing due to all the different islands in these two nations. I think it would have been easier if I had a print edition since the map was pretty hard to see on my kindle. The plot was intriguing, but I really wished for one MAJOR part to be on the page instead of something realized while a character was off-page. Sigh. I wanted to be there for that, Jasmine!😭🤭
I was a little confused on the deities represented. Sometimes I thought I knew which one was the "good" one, but then I would find myself wondering if I was right. However, I have complete faith that Fischer will clear that up in the next two books!
All in all, this is a great start to a new series by one of my favorite authors!
This book was really slow. I was reading this with a friend and for half the book, there wasnt anything to discuss because not much was happening and I wasn't very interested in the characters. I really wanted to like Concoran, but was having a hard time connecting to him, and I wasn't feeling the romance either. The writing was good, and parts of the story and world were interesting, so overall, it wasn't a bad book, it just didnt grab me like The Nightingale Trilogy did.
I liked this one decently..I didn’t love it as much as the other books I’ve read by this author, but I still enjoyed this one for the most part! The characters were hard for me to connect with and like for the majority of the book, which is probably why I struggled so much with this book. I don’t know why exactly I didn’t care about them too much, but they did get better as the book progressed. I did like the plot but it also felt a bit slow at first and the ending felt rushed, but it was good.
Content: No spice romance, kissing, violence, grief, battles, wounds and some torture
This book. Wow. When it comes to writing characters with a depth that breaks your heart, but also have you constantly laughing at their banter, JJ Fischer is an absolute champion. I've never read a character like Rigan before (gravedigger isn't an occupation that comes up too often in the romance genre) but from first meeting, I was fascinated by her. By a few chapters in, I was captivated. Corcoran too. Along with every other friend they picked up along the way.
If you enjoy fantasy reads, you're going to love this one!! It's funny and witty and clever and haunting and deep and sweet and utterly captivating. And that cover. Absolutely stunning!
“When you looked in the mirror just now, I saw two words in your eyes—not deserving. You have made a life out of death, my dear. … Your past may be nothing more than a graveyard, a lonely place haunted by shadows and regrets. But do not stake your identity there, Rigan. Do not carve your headstone before your time.”
Well. I have to start off with a complaint, but I was promised the ending of this book wouldn’t be a cliffhanger, and while maybe it technically isn’t, it’s close enough to count. How dare you do this to me, J.J.!
Aside from that…wow. I was captured from the first sentence, and unlike Rigan, I didn’t struggle to free myself at all. The world-building and setting are unique and fascinating, drawing you into the book and merging seamlessly with the plot to produce an incredible novel.
Rigan and Corcoran are fascinating characters on their own, but together, they’re electric. From the snarky banter to the hidden wounds to the protective instincts neither can fully smother, they capture your heart and make you want to step into the story and become their friends.
Combined with the compelling characters and fantastic worlds I’ve come to expect from Fischer are the deeper truths she doesn’t hesitate to shine a light on, challenging both her characters and readers to look and move beyond the comfortable traps into freedom and fuller lives.
This book is by far one of my all time favorites. OH MY GOODNESS!!! J. J. Fischer has done an amazing job! From page 1 I was deeply engrossed into “The Heart of the King”. There is so much detail, but not too much that it becomes boring. The characters really held my interest, and I can be quite picky about reading a book when the characters aren’t likable. Rigan was just perfect. I really love tough females who have soft sides. Yes, she was feisty, but the way she slowly softened towards her captors, even going as far as saving their lives at times made her a top favorite. Corcoran was so complex. A man of duty, yet haunted by his past. Torn in two different directions of serving his king and following his morals. I was SO thankful that his morals won out. Rigan and Corcoran have to be one of my most favorite book couples. They mesh so well together. Both characters have troubled pasts and trauma. A shared understanding. It was heartwarming when they realized the truth. They love each other. And that ending? I was so giddy!😆 I truly love everything about this book and definitely plan to reread. The second book can’t come soon enough!

“The Heart of the King” delivers a sweeping tale of romance, intrigue, and adventure. I fell in love with the cast of characters (particularly Corcoran 😊) and held my breath until the dazzling finish of this book! I didn’t want the journey to end!!
I was intrigued by the Laeti culture and I really hope that it is explored further as the series continues. Vivid world building and beautiful prose permeate every part of this novel, further cementing J.J. Fischer as one of my all time favorite authors!
Rigan’s character was such a delight. She was witty, snarky, and full of surprises. I laughed out loud nearly every time she sassed Corcoran. Speaking of my favorite character! Corcoran’s story was one that broke my heart, but I really loved how he was still a kind and caring man even though he’d been through a lot. He gave off MAJOR Aragorn vibes (which I adored because he is also one of my favorite characters) and it was so much fun to read!
I loved how slowly their relationship progressed. It felt natural, realistic, and made the ending that much sweeter. Another great thing about this novel is that there was no cliffhanger! Of course it left me anxious for the next book, but it was wrapped up nicely.
All in all, I highly recommend this fantasy story to fans of Pocahontas, Aragorn, enemies to lovers, high stakes, and fast paced action,.
CW (POTENTIAL SPOILERS): There are a few scenes where a man makes unwanted advances towards a woman (not graphically described; “he touched her”), a man watches two women and is thought to have evil thoughts about them, a couple shares a bed before they are married (he is taking care of her during a sickness), and a few implied comments about women but not explicitly stated. There is also a brief description of some sort of torture disguised as healing and a fair amount of blood is described. Monsters that might prove scary for younger readers. One of the character’s is a gravedigger.
*I received an ARC of this book and have reviewed it voluntarily.
J. J. Fischer has done it again. I loved this book, oh my goodness. Rigan is one of my favorite FMCs this year, and the rest of the cast was so well fleshed. I cannot wait for the rest of the books in this series!!!
Amazing. 100 Stars. A 1000 Stars. It's officially one of my favorite books. From the very first page, I was captivated. The way this book is written really draws you in. I've never read a story where a main character was a grave digger so that was a really fun to read. Rigan is a very cool character (an new fav FMC of mine, I think) and the banter between her and Corcoran is hilarious. Speaking of him, I can totally see why the author compared him to Aragorn and Thor. At the end of a book, I'm not often wanted another book with the same lead characters, but they are so well written and so cute together. I am looking forward to having them in the other books in the series even as side characters. The supporting cast is also super fun. This book is filled with twists and you never quite know what will happen next. Don't walk, RUN to get this book when it releases. I'll be ordering a paperback copy ASAP!
Special thanks to the author for an ARC copy of this amazing book.
This story had me from the very beginning. The vivacious characters came alive off the page, the adventure across a vivid fantasy real had me totally transported, and the heart beneath the surface stole mine. Some twists I guessed, some I didn’t, but one thing remained a constant the whole way through: I h thoroughly enjoyed every moment.
This book afflicted me with several late nights reading and several others lying awake thinking about what might happen next! I love it entirely and already cannot wait for the rest of the series.
The Heart of the King by J. J. Fischer was an amazing read ! I really enjoy reading this book and can’t wait to read the next one ! J. J. did an amazing job in creating a fantasy world with the maps and all the details, I love when we have a map at the begining of the book :) The characters are well developed and shed id a great job creating the background for all of them. -- I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publishers. I picked up “The Heart of the King” and literally could not put it down. This book should come with an addiction warning! J.J. Fischer has created something really special here.
The story follows Rigan North, a gravedigger who’s prophesied to capture the heart of the crown prince of Jardia and help defeat these terrifying mind-controlling monsters called the Shro Khan. The premise hooked me immediately and Fischer delivers throughout.
What I loved: The world-building feels authentic, the characters are compelling, and the political intrigue keeps you guessing. Rigan’s journey from gravedigger to someone destined for greatness is genuinely engaging, and her unlikely partnership with the captain has all the tension and slow-burn development you want in fantasy. Fischer does a great job balancing action scenes with character development throughout the book. The dialogue feels natural and engaging.
My one complaint: The last few chapters felt rushed after such careful pacing throughout the rest of the book. It didn’t ruin the experience, but it was noticeable after such strong storytelling earlier on.
Despite the rushed ending, this is a solid fantasy that delivers on its promises. Fischer (who wrote The Nightingale Trilogy) has crafted an engaging story that works well as the first book in the Painted Wind series. Definitely recommend for fantasy fans looking for something new!
Looking forward to the next book in the Painted Wind series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publishers. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
Another wonderful fantasy adventure from JJ Fischer!! I cannot wait for the sequel (and book one isn’t out yet)!
I liked that there was primarily 2 POVs with a couple shorter sections from another character’s POV.
The character development is excellent. Both Rigan and Corcoran are complex characters with complex motives. Both are unique and intriguing as well as relatable.
I loved how the enemies to lovers trope is accomplished in this book. It’s done so well, IMO! Both characters are empathetic and eventually see that there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to the other.
I enjoyed finding several Christian themes in this book: trusting the Divine to guide them, choosing to do the right thing even though it may cost you, putting others’ needs above your own, etc. Characters pray to the Divine Will. And The Shro Khan (enemy to all) is a liar, tempting characters which leads to their destruction.
Although the pacing seems to starts off a tad slow (with spurts of activity) due to world-building and character intros, it doesn’t take too long for the plot to start moving along at a good pace.
And then there are the PLOT. TWISTS. There was at least one, maybe two, that I absolutely did not see coming.
Finally…that ending!!! I absolutely loved it, and can’t wait to find out what happens next!!
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (4.5/5 stars)
To sum up: I loved it! Can’t wait for more!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
“The Heart of the King” is very well written with a thrilling plot, interesting and complex characters, fascinating world building, and laugh out loud banter!
The book immediately drew me in from page one and kept me reading past my bedtime.
Rigan was my favorite character. She was hilarious and resourceful, and I really enjoyed reading her perspective.
"The Heart of a the King" by J.J. Fischer is an excellent story filled with great dialogue and terrific world-building. Fisher has created a world that has so much to explore and this first story in her trilogy sets it up perfectly. She's created strong cultures, a mysterious set of beings that cause chaos for those that live in this land and the main characters Corcoran and Rigan are so well written!
The two main characters have so much depth and character to them. You can see them turn from enemies to lovers. The twists and turns as the story goes on keep the reader engaged from beginning to end. The side characters are well written and enhance the story. I can see how Fischer is building up to more in the subsequent books she'll be writing for this series. I can't wait to read more.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher without the expectation of a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
The Heart Of The King is my fifth read by J.J. Fischer and she has proven herself, yet again, to be a master of character building. Her characters are always so raw and real, they feel like they could be real people.
I LOVED the world building! So many things to explore as this series goes on. The wildlife makes me wish this book had some illustrations! Or awesome bookmarks! The creatures are so interesting and some unique in how they interact with humans.... It can be so hard to complement a book without giving away spoilers sometimes!
The main female character being a gravedigger is such a interesting choice and I was not sure how I would feel about that but it is blended into the plot so perfectly I can not think of Rigan any other way. Something I have really come to enjoy in Fischers books is how the two main characters really help each other on more of a emotional and personal level. Dashing knights who slay the girls dragon is awesome to read about of course but reading about a couple being there for each other, helping the other overcome thier trauma, sticking it out through the really tough stuff and building a life together really makes the male characters worthy of a knighthood. Of course Corcoran does still slay the occasional real beast on Rigans behalf. Rigans character is certainly not the helpless damsel who needs a knight either, she WAS a gravedigger before he came along after all! That is something I really liked about Fischers books the couple really learns to lean on each other and work together.
The Heart Of The King left me wanting the next book! It is like having a delicious appetizer knowing there is more to come and if what you just had is a indication its going to be amazing! Also shame on the author for that cliffhanger, does she not know a lot of people read before bed! 🤣
I received a copy of the book from the author. my opinions, as always, are my own.
The Heart of the King has all the hallmarks you would expect of J.J. Fischer: an action-packed adventure, witty banter, and strong characters with big hearts.
When Corcoran arrives to kidnap Rigan North, prophesied to bring about the end of the king's reign, he's not sure what he was expecting. But a woman hurling dishware at his head was definitely not on the list. As they begin the treacherous journey back to the king, Rigan will continue to surprise him with her tenacity, cleverness, and endless questions. To be honest, he would almost prefer her escape attempts to her interrogations. Yet, the longer they travel together, the more they are drawn to each other.
Slowly they begin to see how much they have in common. Both Corcoran and Rigan long for freedom, both will do anything to protect those they love, and both struggle with ghosts of their past. But can they overcome bounty hunters, deadly monsters, and cruel tyrants to find the freedom they seek?
Fischer's newest fantasy offers plenty of twists, heartwarming moments, and a unique setting to explore. I especially look forward to learning more about the Shro Khan in the sequel, the deadly monsters who lurk in the forests and oceans. At this point in the story, we've gotten hints of the lore surrounding the mind controlling shapeshifters, bits of superstition and nerve-wracking encounters, but we don't truly know much about them or how our heroes will bring about their defeat.
An exciting first installment for a fantasy series you won't want to miss.
**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions above are my own.
J.J. Fischer has once again created a story with deep lore, captivating characters, and an enchanting world.
I love a good enemies to lovers storyline and The Heart of the King does not disappoint. I'm here for the witty banter and staying for the tender moments in between.
Rigan and Corcoran are both stubborn, but where Rigan is outspoken and wild like the rushing wind, Corcoran is stoic like a stone. The clashing begins immediately which is expected when one is kidnapped. I love how Fischer protrays the kidnapping. Rigan does not go quietly and tries to escape every chance she gets. Until the danger of being free becomes worse than being a captive.
The Heart of the King is an action-packed journey with Pocohontas vibes. The name of the series will make perfect sense.
Fischer has also created a rich landscape with lush paradises and unique creatures. At one point while reading, I wished I could step into the book and experience Mistral Forest.
Though not overt, the Christian themes are there. As well as the idea of can you change your destiny or do you just end up self fulfilling it?
While The Heart of the King is a clean read there is a scene of intense torture, a man's hand briefly going places it shouldn't, and at least an instance of a character considering drowning.
I still recommend The Heart of the King especially if you are a fan of fantasy, romance, Pochontas, and snarky main characters.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Heart of The King might just be my favorite book by J.J. Fischer! It is exciting and adventurous, as well as beautiful and romantic! I read this book in three afternoons, completely unable to put it down until I found out what would happen next. The FMC was fiery and tough, it was beautiful to watch her soften as the story went one without losing the spirit that made her who she was. J.J. Fischer excels at writing female characters who are strong but still feminine. The MMC is a man with a strong moral compass who struggles with choices. I enjoyed watching his character develop and how he wrestled with identity as a soldier and his identity as a person. In the end, his integrity stands up to the test every time, not because he never makes mistakes but because he strove for what was best for others. Monsters stalk the trees and the waters. Royal intrigue threatens to swallow our characters at every turn. Which is the greater threat? Can a person's fate really be bound by a prophecy, can our choices still change our path? There is romance in this book, but no real spice (a few kisses and embraces). There is action and violence throughout the book, but non of it is graphic. I would not say that there is a magic system in this book, though there are definitely magical seeming creatures, prophetic abilities, and mentions of a witch. This book made me laugh, gasp, and cry out loud! It is definitely one you should move to the top of your TBR pile!
“A cool breeze plucked at the treetops with fingers that would have been invisible had they not also stirred up swirling columns of leaves, flower petals, and dust, in an earthy myriad of colors. The wafts assumed an almost human shape, shifting and undulating in a rather sensual imitation of a dance. Fuchsia pink tangled recklessly with aquamarine blue. “Painted wind,” murmured Rigan under her breath.”
Such an intriguing start to a series! J.J. Fischer does it again with fantastic world building and a character driven plot. Rigan and Corcoran have fantastic banter, and fight for what they believe to be right. Rigan is looking to find her place in the world, and battling the loneliness that tries to creep in. Corcoran is an honorable soldier who struggles with loyalty and doing what is right no matter the cost. As the story moves forward the plot twists, betrayals and close calls had me wanting to know exactly what Rigan and Corcoran’s parts are and how justice is going to be made.
The Heart of the King is a fantastic start to this fantasy series. Enemies to lovers, found family, political intrigue, intense battle scenes, sweet romance and light faith themes come together to make this a fantasy read you won’t want to put down. I can’t wait for book two to come out!
I received a complimentary copy from J.J. Fischer. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
Interesting from cover to cover, I am not sure how I feel about The Heart of a King as a solo book. (Keep in mind that it is book one of a continuing series, though the two MCs do get their HEA in this book.) In part, this is because—while this book has a happily ever after—it is definitely not a standalone. It wasn’t quite a cliffhanger, but there are so many unresolved plot points and now I have to WAIT…and I’m not good at waiting to find out how a plot resolves.
Another reason I feel a mite unsure is because it was just a wee bit darker than I had expected. Pretty much any story will hold me riveted, but I do especially love those I can finish with a smile on my face and a feeling of unicorns and roses, and this one wasn’t it. On the note of humour, however, there was a good deal of it offsetting the heaviness in this book. Perhaps I didn’t laugh, but I smiled several times, and highlighted several quotes and passages I found highly amusing. The female main character, Rigan North, is quite the character indeed.
Thankfully, there will not be a long wait for the rest of the books as there can typically be in traditional publishing, and good WILL eventually conquer evil.
While I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher, all thoughts and opinions within this review are my own.
I loved this book! Once again, Jasmine brought me to tears with the final chapters as Rigan finally learns the truth about her worth and her purpose. This message really resonated with me this time around, as I've been grappling with thoughts of being worthless and having no purpose. This story reminded me that I am loved, protected, and valued even when the world wants to do everything in its power to destroy me. I sometimes joke about being a janitor for Jesus because I seem to be stuck in a role as a cleaning lady with a college degree when my desire is to do so much more with my life for my Father and King. As Rigan learned she was more than just a worthless, unwanted gravedigger, I saw myself in her, and while I'm still learning to trust God and be brave, I am reminded that he can see so much farther into my future and still knows the plans He has for me.
This book is an excellent read for those who enjoy romantic fantasy with a message and relatable characters. I can't put into words how well Jasmine builds relationships between characters that develop in a realistic manner, and the way her writing captures the emotions needed to deliver the timely messages of her books. You can’t go wrong reading a J.J. Fischer book; just don’t forget to grab a box of tissues!
I received an advanced copy of the book. My opinions are my own.
𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂𝒃𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝒘𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒖𝒍! I’ve always wondered, what would happen if a man was sent to capture a woman, but then fell in love with her? This book answered that question perfectly.
Corcoran is sent to kidnap Rigan on behalf of the king he serves. In return, he’s promised his freedom and the king’s daughter’s hand in marriage. But kidnapping Rigan turns out to be far more complicated than expected. She’s not who he thought she’d be, and NOTHING is as it seems.
As Corcoran fights to protect her and fulfill his duty, he also finds himself grappling with unexpected emotions. Rigan is rumored to be the one who will defeat the Khan, and she's already promised to another in order to make that prophecy come true. Corcoran is betrothed, Rigan has been stolen away because of her importance, and both of them are bound by destinies they never chose. But what happens when neither of them wants that future anymore? Can they outrun prophecy, and what about the families and kingdoms relying on them?
I absolutely loved this book. I would have finished it sooner, but the eARC formatting made the font so small it gave me terrible headaches. That aside, I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to see where the series goes!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. This review reflects my honest opinion.
Oh. My. Word. This book was epic!!!! Who would have thought reading about a female grave digger and a heroic captain of the King would become one of my top reads of the year?! From the very first page I was drawn into Rigan North's life, and I liked her instantly. Corcoran, the captain send to kidnap her so she doesn't fulfill a prophecy for the other kingdom, was a fierce hero as well. I loved both characters and how they slowly learn to trust one another and, dare I say, love each other. From the world the author created, complete with fantastical animals and beauty that jumps off the page, to side characters that became friends just as quickly as Rigan and Corcoran did, I'm sad to have come to the end of this story. But... the good news is there's three more books yet to come in the series! The bad news... they aren't written yet. You can bet I'm going to be waiting with bated breath for the next book in the series. I appreciate that the author left us on enough of a cliff-hanger to make you beg for the next book, but not so much of one that you want to throw said book against the wall because you don't know what happens next. Bottom line, buy this book! You won't regret it. *I read an early ARC of the book from the author/publisher. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
The Heart of the King by J.J. Fischer is a wonderful, fantasy story with adventure and prophecy and danger and awesome characters.. It drew me in from the very first line when we learned that someone had "found the girl." As the story goes on, we discover that there are others who are also searching for said girl, or Rigan, who has never felt that she has any value to anyone, and has been living a lonely life as a grave digger. That is until she was kidnapped on the order of the king by Corcoran and his men. What exactly does the king want with her? Who else is after her and why?
I like that we don't really know what the prophecy exactly is at the beginning of the story, though we can sort of figure it out a bit. We learn more as the story progresses. Just like we learn more about the dreaded Shro Khan.
I love the characters and seeing them fleshed out as they make their journey. Rigan is so fiesty, yet she is also kindhearted. And you can see the struggle that Corcoran is going through as he follows the orders he has. And I just love the interactions between the two. Additionally, I just love this world the author has created. I can't wait to read more in this series.
Highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book as a member of the review team and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.
"Honor was many things, not all of them logical or easily gleaned, but it was consistent to a fault."
Such a wondrous and fantastical world greets me every time I open this author's book! I discovered JJ Fischer relatively recently and loved her Nightingale Trilogy series. But this! This world is a medieval fantasy, complete with evil mystical monsters, warrior captains, powerful kings, political intrigue, mythical creatures and one overwhelming prophecy. Rigan and Corcoran are awesome main characters - I loved Rigan's tenacity, ferocity, and quick wits that perfectly balanced Corcoran's steadfastness, compassion, and logical intelligence. Their journey through mountains and plains was fraught with trouble, deception, betrayal and near-death experiences that kept the plot at a fast pace with tons of action. Despite Rigan and Corcoran starting out as enemies, their relationship slowly became friendship then more. Rigan's fear of unworthiness and abandonment made her very real and Corcoran's grief and regret made him quite relatable. The latter half of the book was plot twists upon plot twists - my jaw was hanging open by the time the epilogue came about. I can't wait to read the second book in the series! So much has happened in the first book that I'm not sure how the author will manage to keep the energy going but I firmly believe in her masterful skill to bring an even more jaw-dropping sequel.
I received a complimentary copy courtesy of WhiteFire Publishing and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
From the start I was captivated by the unique characters of this story. Written with a depth and realness that had them pull me in and join them through their thrilling journeys. I loved how the at first unimpressive veneer was torn away to show the amazing steel and grit underneath for both characters. How true that the first look at a person's mask rarely tells you they truly are. I loved how the banter between Rigan and Corcoran, serious one minute and laughing out loud the next. J.J. Fischer has masterfully created a wonderful world and unique world. With stunning details it is brought to life, waiting for the story to unfold along it's winding paths, rushing waters, and teeming cities. It was impossible to set this book aside once it was started! This fantasy tale is full of intrigue and adventure, with some romance on the side. Such a great mix of realistic and magical fantasy! I wanted to continue this dangerous journey to find out the next twist and surprise. I can't wait for the next book in this series. It's already on my TBR pile! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was delighted to dive into a brand new series from my favorite fantasy author. The Heart of the King kicks off the Painted Wind series with a new world, new adventure, and new romance.
This first book takes us on an adventure across the island chain of the Twin Kingdoms, Calidore and Jardia. The world is well developed with political drama and royal legacies as well as fantastical creatures and botany. Though the ending left me excited and curious about the rest of the four-book series, I wouldn't call this a cliff hanger. The main story resolved, but the door is wide open for new and continuing drama.
If you're already a Fischer fan, this book was less serious than The Nightingale Trilogy and The Soul Mark duology, but less whimsical than Regency & Regicide. As always, the story is ripe with deeper themes, including self-worth, courage, discernment, and trust.
I received a complimentary eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
This amazing fantasy/speculative fiction book boggles my mind. Fischer has created a world with all sorts of interesting animals, plants, monsters, people groups, and cultures. Most of the book covers a rugged journey from the far north to the south, full of hilarious sparring between the two main characters, uncomfortable plot twists, more dumps in the creek/falls in the mud/fights against various enemies than you want to count, and interesting relationships that keep changing and developing. I enjoyed the book, but it is not a relaxing read. Be warned that this is the beginning of a series, so a lot of plot threads are left hanging until book 2 comes out.
