A hijacked plane. A pursuing killer. And a K9's instinct to help them make it out alive.

Pop Singer Keely Williams's search for her biological mother in Alaska has been painfully unsuccessful. Now she just wants to escape this wild frontier and never look back. But when her plane is hijacked, she's suddenly plunged into a race against not only an Alaska blizzard but also a killer who's on her tail.

After a career-ending injury, ex-cop Dawson Mulligan has only one friend--Caspian, the stray dog he adopted. Dawson just wants to figure out how to get his life on track, but during a flight home to Copper Mountain, he spots a downed plane and stops to help. Except when his not-a-rescue dog runs off into the woods and discovers the trail of a missing survivor, it's up to the former cop to stage a rescue.

But Dawson has no idea he's being pulled into a deadly pursuit, or that Caspian is more than he seems. There might be redemption and second chances waiting for both Dawson and Keely if they have the courage to face their wounded pasts and fight for their future.

Join master storyteller Susan May Warren for a propulsive ride through the Alaskan wilderness, where love might be the riskiest--and most rewarding--adventure of all.

I can't help be amazed at the gifts God has delighted me with - a wonderful husband, four amazing children, and the opportunity to write for Him.

I've been writing as long as I can remember - I won my first book writing contest in first grade! Over the years, writing has become, for me, a way to praise God and see Him at work in my life.

Although I have a degree in Mass Communications from the University of MN, my real writing experience started when I penned the The Warren Report - a bi-monthly newsletter that detailed our ministry highlights.

Living in Russia meant I never lacked for great material - and those experiences naturally spilled out first into devotionals and magazine articles and finally into my first published story, "Measure of a Man," in the Tyndale/HeartQuest, Chance Encounters of the Heart anthology.

Susan and husbandI grew up in Wayzata, a suburb of Minneapolis, and became an avid camper from an early age. My favorite fir-lined spot is the north shore of Minnesota - it's where I met my husband, honeymooned and dreamed of living. The north woods easily became the foundation for my first series, The Deep Haven series.based on a little tourist town along the shores of Lake Superior. I have to admit - I'm terribly jealous of Mona, the heroine of my first full-length book, Happily Ever After, a Christy Award Finalist published in 2004 with Tyndale/Heartquest.

Our family moved home from the mission field in June 2004 -- and now we live in the beautiful town I'd always dreamed of! God has amazed me anew with His provision, and blessings -- and allowed me a season when I can write full time for Him.

I 'm delighted you've stopped in to visit. My hope is that you'll be blessed and encouraged by soul-stirring stories of regular people interacting with a God who loves them.

I'd love to hear from you! I love getting mail, especially from readers and I welcome your questions and comments. Write to me at susan@susanmaywarren.com. And, if you're interested, sign up for my newsletter, a quarterly sneak peek into upcoming releases and projects. Thank you for your interest and support.

God Bless and Happy Reading!

Another winner from a trusted author!

This book focuses on Dawson Mulligan and Keely Williams as they learn (1) the importance of dealing with trauma and confronting old wounds and (2) that uncomfortable circumstances are simply opportunities to wake them up, getting them to pay attention to what’s inside them.

Adoption is one of Warren’s themes and I’m sure it’s no coincidence that Dawson came to adopt Caspian, a Doberman-Labrador, or that Keely walks into Dawson’s life when she did. Caspian ends up rescuing Dawson in more ways than one and Keely learned to trust again, thanks to both Dawson and his dog. Sometimes the very things that we need are the last things we are looking for in the last place on Earth that we think we’d find them!

Divine purpose is another of Warren’s beautifully executed themes. I love the thought that there isn't anything that can happen to us in this life that can’t used or isn't designed by God to know Him better. It’s so easy to complain about circumstances when they don’t go according to our plan. I appreciated the encouragement to pivot and see them as invitations.

I loved the thought about forgiveness leading to abundance and about prescriptive ‘time-outs’.

Warren has crafted another wonderful romantic suspense series, spinning off her widely successful Sky King Ranch, Alaska Air One Rescue and Minnesota Kingstons. It highlights all the things we love about Alaska and this extended family with big hearts. I’m looking forward to Jericho’s story next.

This book may connect with characters from other series, but it can be read without previously reading any Susan May Warren books.

I was gifted this copy and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Outstanding narration. Susan May Warren writes incredible, action packed Christian suspense with a side of romance. Neither Keely nor Dawson is looking for the complications of a relationship. Caspian, the dog was a wonderful addition to the story. Like in life, there was something happening all the time. Light, everyday faith was refreshing as well. The first in a new series. Highly recommend.

I was blessed with an ARC. Thank you NetGalley and Revell Paperback. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased. Enjoy, I sure did.

I caught myself holding my breath several times while reading this suspense-chilling novel. I felt the searing cold that steals your very breath, tightens your chest, and makes every hard-earned step feel urgent. The danger isn’t distant or abstract. It presses in with wild wind, blinding snow, and the full knowledge that one wrong decision could mean the end.

Everything felt urgent. The wilderness. The pursuit. The isolation. Yet the tension went deeper than survival. Keely carries longing, grief, and unanswered questions she has tried to outrun for too long. Dawson lives inside the weight of loss and guilt, his body moving forward while his heart remains tethered to what went wrong. Their connection forms under pressure, stripped of pretense, and every interaction felt charged with both fear and hope.

And Caspian … oh, Caspian. He was the emotional heartbeat of the story, loyal to his core, his presence marked by bark, instinct, and unwavering devotion. I worried about him. I smiled because of him. I felt the ache of his loyalty and the beauty of his faithful purpose. Watching him work, protect, and love pulled at me in deeply emotional and memorable ways.

Threaded through it all was faith that clearly showed up. Scripture, prayer, and spiritual truth met fear, trauma, and regret right where they lived. The book speaks honestly about suffering, forgiveness, and peace … not as ideas, but as realities and actions that must be chosen again and again as we keep our eyes on Jesus and our hearts obedient to Him.

Courage within these pages took shape as loyalty, obedience, commitment, and mercy. It looked like frozen wounds yielding to God’s touch, forgiveness loosening its grip on fear, and peace settling deep in the knowledge of being forgiven, accepted, and safe. Many lines in this book stayed with me, including this one: “Peace doesn’t come from inside. It comes from knowing that you’re forgiven. Accepted. Safe.”

Community moments brought genuine warmth in the middle of the storm. People showed up, offered shelter, and chose sacrifice. Those scenes grounded the story and reminded me how often God supplies the needs of others, gently nudging those whose hearts are fully surrendered to Him.

I closed this book grateful and moved, not because my life looks like this story, but because the ache beneath it felt familiar and invited a quieter, deeper attentiveness to Jesus.

Readers who love chilling, heart-racing suspense where faith in Jesus and relationships with others truly matter.

I received a digital ARC from the publisher and NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review nor paid to do so. This is my honest and unbiased review. My thoughts and opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style and story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

This is a Small Town Romance, and this is the first book in the Call of the Wild series. I read this book by listening to the audiobook, and I found the audiobook to be really good. I did love the characters in this book, and I really enjoyed the plot in this book. The romance was cute and there was a little action which was good. I really loved the ending of this book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

This book would make a great tv series with cozy winter vibes and lots of action. I’d have to check to make sure, but I think I read roughly 10 Susan May Warren books this year. Track of Courage is my favourite by far. The stakes are high and action keeps rolling but in a realistic, not too far out there way. It makes for a great suspenseful read set in snowy Alaska — which, to be fair, most books set in Alaska tend to lean to action and mystery.

Susie May has a lot of books with interwoven plots and characters, but you can definitely pick this book up without reading the previous novels. If you do want more backstory, Alaska Air One is a five book series where Dawson Mulligan was first introduced.

I started the year with a five star Susan May Warren and it looks like I just about ended the year with another one.

Sweet book that revolves around a police officer (who’s currently out on leave), a pop singer, and a wonderful dog!

Dawson is really trying to get better…doing PT and really trying to take care of himself as best he can!
He’s not sure he can ever go back to work as a cop, but that’s what he wants to do! In the meantime, he’s adopted a dog… Caspian. And, he’s a real sweetie! He seems to know just when Dawson needs something… like, anything… Almost like he can sense it! 😮
But Dawson still has vivid thoughts and dreams about the case that totally changed his life… and he’s not sure they will ever go away….

Keely, the pop singer, is in Alaska, undercover and off the radar, in search of her biological Mom. Although she does have a lead, she finds herself back on a plane and heading towards home… until the plane is hijacked… she’s not really sure what is going on, but then the plane crashes…
And she’s still alive.
But the highjackers are looking for her… and they have guns.
But her Dad was a cop and he taught her well…soooo….

Funny thing…. Dawson is on a plane with his friend… catching a ride… when he sees a downed plane… and so they go to investigate. Did anyone live? Do they need help?

This was surprisingly good! Especially since we kind-of have two angles of the story. The Cop. And, the singer.
And then there’s the very small town vibe of an off-the-grid town where everyone knows (and helps) everyone else…
And, steps up when times are tough!

I totally enjoyed Keely’s dual personas! The one where she’s on-stage and a HUGE presence where everyone knows her.
And then there’s the one where she’s trying to be invisible, and quiet, and run of the mill. But also with her Dad’s heavy influences of being a police officer while she was growing up… where he taught her things in life that she will never forget!

Overall, sweet…. a little scary, and a touch of romance. And, there’s a sweet dog 🐕 who’s just waiting to show all that he is, and all he can be!

4 bright, sweet, dog-filled love-y stars for me!! ⭐️🦮⭐️🐾⭐️🦮⭐️🐾

A hijacked plane drops pop star Keely Williams into the Alaskan wilderness, on the run from a serial killer and needing the help of ex-cop Dawson Mulligan and his dog, Caspian. What follows is a wild ride of twists and turns, adventure and romance, and both characters working through their past and wrestling with their faith.

I’m a huge fan of Susan May Warren’s books. She produces adventurous and suspenseful romance in beautiful settings with faith woven throughout the story. Track of Courage is everything I’ve come to love and expect from a Susan May Warren book. I was on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out who was after Keely, heart racing as her and Dawson traversed the Alaskan wilderness, and smiling at the sweet romance developing between the two of them. Both of them also wrestled with personal issues and it never fails to hit me in the heart in the best way as the characters dealt with their past hurts and histories.

I love how Susan May Warren’s books are all set in the same world. There were several characters mentioned that I recognized from previous books, and I love how jumping into this book, I already had an image of the world they were set in from all the backlist books I’ve read. Whether you’re already a fan of Susan’s books, or looking for a new-to-you author, I highly recommend Track of Courage. Available now!

Title: Track of Courage
Author: Susan May Warren
Genre: Romantic Suspense
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Synopsis: When Keely Williams decides to go meet her biological mom, she never imagines she’d be involved in a plane hijacking and stranded in the wilderness of Alaska with a handsome stranger coming to her rescue. But when Dawson Mulligan saw the downed plane, his previous training kicked in and he knew he couldn’t leave the scene unchecked. His new sidekick Caspian—the stray dog he adopted—comes to his aid in the rescue and continues to surprise him with his strange antics. But as the scene unfolds, there’s more than meets the eye than a simple hijacking. As the dangers continue and the mystery deepens, Dawson and Keely feel a new connection that neither has felt in a long time. Are they brave enough to face their pasts and the future they could have together?

Analysis: Romance, rescue dogs, and redemption? Yes, please! I absolutely flew through this Alaskan romantic suspense novel. And as the mystery unfolded, I was surprised over and over again. Longtime fans of Susan May Warren will love all the connections in this book, but if you’re new to her (like me!), you’ll enjoy this just as much. I loved meeting the characters (including the furry ones) and seeing them (the human ones) struggle through their pasts as they wrestle with hard questions of faith, healing, and God’s love. And, of course, the romance is sweet and satisfying. If you think you might enjoy a romantic Alaskan adventure, Track of Courage is a book you don’t want to miss!

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow, this book took me for a wild ride! There was never a dull moment...

First of all, I requested the ARC without knowing anything about the book, the plot, or the author... The guy on the cover looked good... yes, my thought process is that deep 😅

The story begins when a very famous pop star goes to Alaska to meet her biological mother. She chickens out and takes the first flight out. The flight gets kidnapped, the pilot is murdered and she's running away from the murderer through the woods in the Alaskan winter.

And believe me, it is only the beginning.

There is also a guy (remember the handsome one from the cover? well, him) he is a police detective who got injured and is quite grumpy.

And there's also a dog, who is the main character of the story in my point of view.

I very much enjoyed this book.

keep in mind that it is classified as Christian romance, which means that it is a clean romance, and there are quite a few talks about God.

Thank you, Netgalley, for an ALC copy of this book

I have to be honest, I am not fond of winter or cold places so reading a book set in Alaska wouldn't be my first choice--EXCEPT it is written by Susan May Warren. I will pretty much read anything she writes. Track of Courage is the start of a new Call of the Wild series and is set mainly in Alaska.

Keely William is a pop singer who came to Alaska to search for her biological mother. When she sees her, she chickens out on telling her who she is. . .and gets on a plane to go home. However, things don't go as planned when the plane is hijacked and crashes.

Dawson Mulligan is an ex-cop who had a bad knee injury and has some PTSD after a rescue that went wrong. He decides to fly home to Copper Mountain to recuperate and figure out his next move. On the way home, they spot the downed plane. His dog, Caspian, then runs off on a trail of a survivor.

When Dawson catches up to Keely, they both may have found more than they bargained for. Can Dawson get her out of trouble?

I enjoyed Track of Courage. It kept me turning pages with the suspense of getting the bad guys and the attraction of the main characters. However, there were some good sub-plots involving other characters and I enjoyed them too. I also liked Dawson's dog, Caspian. What a great name(!) and I enjoyed his part in this story. I also enjoyed several other characters. There are themes of grace, mercy, redemption and healing in this book. I am already looking forward to the next installment in the series.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Oh my word this book was sensational!!! Susan May Warren truly is a master at her craft and this book shows you just that. Track of Courage is packed with suspense, romance and amazing Faith themes that just made this book one of my favorites so far this year!
I not only loved the characters in the book, Keely and Dawson were so good but Caspian the K-9 stole the show! I also enjoyed mentions of locations that are in other Susan May Warren’s books and we see characters from some of her other books as well especially the Sky King Ranch Series and Alaska Air One! I for one cannot wait for the next book so Revell I’ll be looking out when you publish the next one!

Track of Courage by Susan May Warren is a high action novel with romance blooming all over the pages for the main two characters. Warren does a wonderful job, like she always does, with her settings. Readers will feel the cold and see the blizzard as it bears down on the lodge up in rural Alaska. She does a good job at inviting her readers into the rustic log cabin lodge, that I want to live in, and allow them to be cozy by the fire while playing board games, eating cookies, and drinking cocoa and coffee. What is better than that! The action kept piling up more mirroring the snow falling outside. Warren kept the characters jumping as issue after issue kept ruining the growing emotions. And the dog! This dog, Caspian, kept shoving the characters into deeper trouble, but then it would turn around and help rescue others too. Silly dog! As for the romance, both hero and heroine had a hard time knocking down the walls that they have built around their heart and their lives, but they really wanted to. They wanted the love that they were experiencing, but it is hard. Warren does bring back a lot of familiar characters if readers are familiar with her other stories. But she has written so many stories that I remember reading their stories, but I could not really place them on who is married to who and what their issues were. Maybe someday, I’ll find the time to sit down and start from the beginning and re-read them all again in order. Overall, Track of Courage by Susan May Warren will capture the interests of Warren’s fans and help new readers who love adventure with moments of romance to find her stories. I will own this series with all my other Warren books. One of my favorite authors.

"He's caught in the past, and the more he looks back to what might have been, the less he can function today."

The first book of Call of the Wild series is full action, suspense, faith lessons, music, and romance - all the things Susan May Warren is famous for. I loved going back to Alaska and catching up with the Air One Rescue crew and the Sky King Ranch crew. Dawson is not a new name in Alaska, being a Mulligan cousin. My heart hurt for his justice loving spirit, sidelined from his job as a detective with a physical injury and a huge helping of guilt and grief on the side. Caspian was an unforgettable four-legged hero, complete with dog version of ADHD and uncanny ability to track and provide comfort. Keely and Dawson both had past family trauma but learn to forgive and heal. I loved watching Keely create music and loved her resilience, compassion, and grit. The secondary characters at the art colony were super fun and I hope to see more of them in future books. It looks like we have a new set of Alaskan villains - the Sorros brothers - and I am curious to see if they will lead us closer to the rogue CIA agent who has been slippery and elusive since the Montana Marshall series (though I have it on good authority that The Hunt for Alan Martin series will release next summer so I guess we must wait).
If you enjoy romantic suspense, you will love this book that kicks off a promising series of action, faith, and romance in the wintery wilds of Alaska.

What a story! Just when I think Susan May Warren has maxed out her capacity for suspenseful adventure she goes and ups her game with Track of Courage! 5 stars!

I loved Dawson Mulligan in the final book of the Alaska Air One series, One Last Storm. He's back as the main character In Track of Courage, along with his sidekick Caspian. He meets up with Keely Williams in the most unexpected way, and the thrill ride is on! Non-stop action and suspense will have readers turning pages at warp speed. I found myself holding my breath more than once. As a sidenote, I will say the fighting action is ramped up pretty high.

One of the things I love about a Warren book is she always has the most meaningful and inspirational quotes of any author I know. A few favorites:

*"I'm convinced that nothing can happen to me in this life that isn't used or designed by God to know Him better."
*"God uses circumstances to wake us up, get at things inside."
*Trust God, and surrender to Him...You not only get salvation, but you'll be set free to discover yourself too. The person you were made to be."

Track of Courage is a really great story encompassing issues of self doubt, worthiness and giving ourselves and all our problems to God. I like that this new Call of the Wild series is branching out to include K9 dogs and how they can be of service to us. I enjoyed Dawson and Keely's story to the very last page and will be waiting with great anticipation for the second book, Scent of Hope with Jericho Bowie. I appreciate Revell Publishers making a copy available for review. All thoughts and opinions are my very own.

I received an advance review copy of this novel from the publisher, Revell. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
"I'm convinced that nothing can happen to me in this life that isn't used or designed by God to know Him better."

"You don't have to have a perfect voice to make a beautiful song..."

Track of Courage kicks off a new romantic suspense series which ties in beautifully with multiple other series by Warren, all of which stand strongly on their own while sharing an Alaskan setting and an extended cast. This story picks up right on the heels of One Last Storm, a bridge novella between the Alaska Air One Rescue series and this first installment in the Call of the Wild series. I have loved all of Warren’s stories that share this Alaskan setting, and Track of Courage continues that trend.
"Trust God, and surrender to Him... You not only get salvation, but you'll be free to discover yourself too. The person you were made to be."

Dawson Mulligan is an ex-cop, one who was both physically and psychologically traumatized by a career-ending case gone horribly wrong. He just wants to try to rebuild a semblance of a life from the wreckage of loss. His life is now mostly comprised of physical therapy and trying to figure out Caspian, the dog who adopted Dawson in the wake of his injury. Caspian has a mysterious past, and is just as vital a character in this story as Dawson and our female lead and love interest.
"...the world tells you that if you look inside you'll find yourself, and in doing that you'll find peace But peace doesn't come from inside. It comes from knowing that you're forgiven. Accepted. Safe. It's about standing in that place of love and letting it set you free."

Keely, our female perspective, is a popstar who is trying to recover her voice after a vocal surgery. In the meantime, she is in Alaska on the hunt for her birth mother when she chickens out and catches a flight back toward home. Which is where things go south really fast. It’s also how Keely and Dawson first cross paths. They bond as they flee from the dangers hounding them.
"In the ebb and flow of the world, of the terrible and the good, maybe darkness doesn't win because God’s goodness is still in the world, through His people. Through His providence. Even when it feels like darkness is winning."

This story features a lot of the cast of Alaska Air One Rescue and Sky King Ranch as well as their shared setting, Copper Mountain. Which is delightful, as I've falling completely in love with this little slice of Alaska and the characters who populate it. In this installment we spend a good chunk of our time in Woodcrest, a micro-community deep in the Alaskan bush. I adore Woodcrest, and part of me wishes I could live there.
"God moves in myserious ways. Unpredictable. Uncontrollable. But nothing happens in our lives that isn't designed to give us the opportunity to know His love more... And we don't know Him more without risking our heart. And doing the hard thing."

Warren excels at chemistry, whether romantic or communal. She also does a beautiful job weaving faith into her stories in ways that feel honest and real, never preachy or saccharine. And her nature writing imbues her stories with an incredibly strong sense of place. This book exemplifies all of the above.
"...even in darkness, God is trustworthy. He does not abandon is to the screaming void of grief. He holds us, if we're--and sometimes if we're not--willing to hold Him. Because He loves us."

I have two very nitpicky complaints. The publisher synopsis spoils some very early twists. Some of which I even avoided discussing in this review. So, if you can, go into the story as blind as possible. And my biggest gripe with all of Warren’s book is the same—her over usage of aw, shoot and the like in her characters' inner thoughts. Especially aw. It's used way too frequently. Distractingly so. But again, both of those are very minor complaints.
"Life doesn't have to be perfect to be happy. You just have to look for the happy in the middle of all the darkness and keep your eyes on hope.”

Track of Courage is a propulsive, romantic read with a surprising amount of depth. Which tends to be the case with all of Warren’s novels. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Dawson and Keely and Caspian, and I loved having a chance to return to Copper Mountain. I’m looking forward to seeing what Warren has planned for the rest of the Call of the Wild series!

A COMPELLING ALASKAN ADVENTURE!

Award-winning and best-selling author, Susan May Warren, has written another best seller in “Track of Courage” (Call of the Wild, Book 1). This novel is a compelling, Alaskan thriller! Warren will have you on the edge of your seat and completely engrossed in this story as she opens it with the hijacking of a small plane and the subsequent crash of the aircraft. That is just the start of this action-packed thriller! Warren has created a superb cast of characters whose personalities enrich the plot's action.

Pop singer Keely Williams's secret search for her biological mother in Alaska
Ex-cop Dawson Mulligan has only one friend--Caspian, the stray dog he adopted, who turns out to be an incredible rescue dog
The mysterious stalker who has proven that he will not stop until he has finished his killing spree

The intense struggle for Keely’s survival showcases Warren’s exquisite and captivating writing skills, plunging readers into the depths of a story and filling them with rich, encouraging, and lasting words such as these: “God moves in mysterious ways. Unpredictable. Uncontrollable. But nothing happens in our lives that isn’t designed to give us the opportunity to know His love more.”

This is a faith based romantic suspense read set in Alaska.

There are two flawed main characters, Dawson and Keely. Dawson is an ex police officer due to injury sustained in duty. Keely is a famous musician on hiatus due to throat issues.

Keely happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Dawson has taken in a dog, Caspian, who finds Keely after a hijacked plane has crashed.

It is action packed. Keely is being chased and Dawson is trying to protect her. The book showcases the harshess of the Alaskan winter as a blizzard has the two finding shelter at a compound full of kind people.

The primary and secondary characters all have interesting backstories and play a part in making this a deeper read.

The stakes are high in Track of Courage, with danger present from the very beginning when Keely finds herself being pursued through the Alaska bush with a storm closing in. I don't know if it was me or this story that made the suspense element feel more intense in this one, but certain elements felt too close to home, with the way danger came to the safest of havens. It was well developed and paced. I could hardly think of falling in love in such danger-filled moments, but our characters did! The characters were challenged in their faith and grew in their trust of God.

Track of Courage is a spellbinding combination of romance and suspense. The book begins as Dawson and Keely are getting to know each other and we see into the life of the residents of Woodcrest. Then the suspense ramped up and I couldn’t put it down! I loved it! And I have to say, Caspian, lovable and underrated service dog, stole the show! I enjoyed getting to see members of the Alaska Air One Rescue team and Sky Kings Ranch, although reading those series first isn’t essential. I will now anxiously await the next book in this series!

First of all, there’s a rescued dog, so I was immediately sold. Add nonstop action, high-stakes suspense, and a touch of romance set against the brutal Alaskan wilderness, and you’ve got a true page-turner.
I really enjoyed the pacing, the emotional depth, and the bond between the characters (human and canine alike). A solid, entertaining read from start to finish.

I was really excited to read Track of Courage! This was actually my first book by Susan May Warren. It sounded really interesting and I always think it's fun to read books set in Alaska.
I loved how snowy the setting was. The story was good but there wasn't as much suspense as I was expecting or hoping for.

Susan May Warren has been one of my favorite authors for years (don't ask me to pick just one). She still is. That said, I admit I was a bit skeptical about Track of Courage. Susie May is a good writer no matter what, but her latest books weren't hitting the reader's "sweet spot" with me. Plus, the connections between her characters were getting tangled in my head. But well, a Susan May Warren novel, is still exactly that. So, back to Alaska with the Kingston and Marshall casts, and their friends, I went.

I'm glad I listened to my heart instead of my head. Susie May's classic strong, warm voice and writing style permeate this book. As always, I could see how much she loved Alaska, and knew it intimately. She not only does her homework, but lives it. The role of Caspian was particular evidence of this. Susie May had me rooting for and worrying about him from page one onward. I'm a cat person of the first order, so that's no easy feat. (The name "Caspian" helped, too; it's awesome. Am I giving myself away as a Narnia fan)?

Of course, the human characters were no slouches, either. Keely, Dawson, the Woodcrest community, even little kids like Wren and Zoey, were all written with a deft hand and great personalities. Dawson and Keely have chemistry for days, but they also pass my litmus test of distinguishing themselves on their own. Dawson especially had a depth I admit I'd been missing in some of Susie May's recent heroes. I could relate personally to his struggles with physical therapy and his need to belong somewhere. So too, I related even more deeply to Keely's feeling that she was always doing the wrong thing, being the wrong person.

But I loved all these characters for much more than their struggles. Keely, Dawson, and the others feel like vintage Susie May--regular people with deep, thought-provoking stories and layered motivations. I do wish some of those had been probed just a smidge more, but I loved how Susie May took familiar characters and tropes, such as the "city slicker" singer and the rugged ex-cop hero, and fleshed them out. More than fleshed them out, she made them real people for whom their pasts, their callings, and their journeys made sense.

I'd also like to offer kudos for Track of Courage's plot. It's got the mystery and suspense Susie May is so good at, but this time, I didn't feel tangled in subplots or plots of earlier books I felt like I should've known, to enjoy this one. In another plus for me, Track of Courage focuses a lot more on people and their growth than simple survival or wilderness and criminal travails. Not that those two things are bad; Susie May has written some wonderful plot-driven suspense books. But I appreciated the slower, deeper pacing in this one. That said, there are more than a couple breath-stealing twists here, and I mean that literally.

Finally, as usual, Track of Courage has a solid spiritual thread. It's overt, but not in your face. In fact, God and faith are mentioned only a handful of times. But as is becoming the norm in Susie May's books, that's because God's presence is part of the landscape. He not only walks through life with the characters, but inhabits the external and internal spaces that can only be seen in the head and heart--and sometimes, the spaces we don't want anyone to see. Gentle conviction is the name of the game here, as is gentle yet determined encouragement.

I dropped a star basically because as mentioned, I did wish the characters and their arcs had been a smidge deeper. Also, even though I didn't get tangled up, there were a couple of times I thought, "Um, should I know or remember this person? This plot thread?" Again, it didn't jar me out of the story, but I clocked it. Additionally, while the suspense and pacing are great, the villain and the suspenseful threads kind of drop out for a chapter or three. It works overall, but I was slightly surprised.

With those minor notes, I can confidently say Susan May Warren is back, not that she ever went away. Track of Courage made me want to catch up on her last series, which I regrettably missed. If you need to catch up too, take this as an exhortation to do so--but, you can also enjoy this book without reading her whole catalog. I'd definitely recommend curling up somewhere warm and putting this on your January TBR list.

4.5 stars

In my review last year for One Last Stand I said, “Now I’m ready for Dawson to get a story… and I’m not sure we’ve found out all the nuances to Caspian’s either.” Well, apparently ask and I shall receive because I was super delighted to open Track of Courage and discover that Dawson and Caspian (his dog) are its heroes. I love that Susan May Warren writes in an interconnected universe so her characters pop up in each others’ series and we can stay updated on them. (I also just realized that I completely missed the novella that tied up the Alaska Air One Rescue series – One Last Storm – and explains how Dawson ended up in the condition he’s in when this book begins. BUT the author explains it all just fine so I didn’t feel lost for not having read it first. Totally going back to read it though, because why would I knowingly deprive myself of more time with those Air One Rescue characters? Lol)

Whew. Track of Courage is an intense ride from beginning to end! From the hijacked plane that crashes to the powerful blizzard that strands passenger Keely Williams with her rescuers – Dawson (who’s still recovering from a brutal gunshot injury) and his instinctive dog Caspian – to the constant danger from the bad guys as well as nature itself. I’m just going to go on record right now as saying that Caspian is the star of this novel – I fell heart over paws for this amazing K-9 and alternated between chuckling at Dawson’s cluelessness about Caspian’s true awesomeness and wanting to shake him for the same lol. I did love watching these two together though; their relationship is sweet and funny and very endearing. And adding Keely to their dynamic is perfection. She complements their little team in all the best ways, and she constantly surprised me (and Dawson) with her strength, courage & resiliency. As we unpack her secrets and her backstory, I came to admire her even more. I already mentioned that Dawson has intrigued me since the Alaska Air One Rescue series, and I really enjoyed getting to know him better. To dig deeper into his own backstory and emotions. And to watch him fall hard for Keely. Which means some of Susan May Warren’s swoonlicious kissing scenes, y’all! The weather outside might be freezing for Dawson and Keely but those kisses will keep them warm!

Bottom Line: Between the relentless danger, the snowy isolation, the swoony chemistry, and a certain four-legged scene-stealer (who deserves his own fan club), I stayed riveted to Track of Courage by Susan May Warren. This author has such a gift for balancing high stakes, survival-level suspense with emotional depth and delicious romance, and she does so effortlessly again here. I stayed on the edge of my seat as Dawson, Keely, and Caspian tried to stay ahead of a ruthless killer, battled an equally-ruthless blizzard, and fell in love in the process, and it was only when I reached ‘the end’ that I felt my shoulders relax again. These characters (all three of them) are deeply layered, and Warren expertly weaves a meaningful exploration of God’s sovereignty and His redemption of suffering and tragedy into their stories, grounding the action and deepening the heart-impact without slowing the pace. If snowbound survival, healing hearts, faith-filled hope, heroic dogs, and swoon-worthy kisses are your thing (like they are mine), Track of Courage needs to be your next must-read!

The courage to make hard decisions has gotten her where she is and will determine her future.

Track of Courage is the first novel in veteran author Susan May Warren's new Christian romantic suspense series, Call of the Wild, and is set deep in the wilds of the Alaskan bush. Mega-popstar Keely Williams, "Bliss" to her millions of devoted fans, has come to Copper Mountain, Alaska, to search for her birth mother while she recuperates from the surgery she had undergone to repair her vocal cords. But once faced with the reality of introducing herself to this stranger, Keely chickens out and decides to fly back home to New York City without revealing herself to the vibrant, confident woman she found or asking her all the questions she has about why she gave her up for adoption. However, once on the small bush plane to Anchorage, another passenger hijacks the plane, causing it to crash in the middle of nowhere. Surviving the crash, but with the attacker after her, Keely is forced to flee into the snowy, forested bush.

Flying overhead, Dawson Mulligan, an Anchorage police officer recuperating from an on-duty injury, and his pilot cousin, Moose, see the wreckage of the small plane and set down to investigate. When Dawson's rescue dog, Caspian, disappears into the snowy landscape, they separate with Dawson in pursuit. He runs across Keely, lost and hiding in the bush, and under fire from an unknown assailant. With the help of a local, they make it to Woodcrest, a community of artists and artisans, to hunker down as a massive blizzard hits.

Both main characters, Keely and Dawson, are working through past traumas, heartbreak, and physical challenges that may alter the futures they had planned for themselves. Both faced difficult decisions, and their similar circumstances drew them together. The generous and welcoming residents of Woodcrest, with their open, natural belief in God, offer the balm their two struggling souls need at just the right time. Their individual strengths and talents provide each with the means to give back for the hospitality and feel useful rather than a drain on the weather-besieged community. Keely and Dawson are attracted to each other from the start, and their light flirting and banter were a delight. They meshed so well, looking like the perfect couple if they could overcome their obstacles together.

The plot is well-paced and suspenseful as Keely's former fellow passenger is revealed to be a real and ongoing danger not only to herself but also to the Woodcrest community. As the weather worsens, everyone is trapped in place until the storms move on. The harsh conditions and remote setting pose their own dangers and significantly shape the plot's trajectory. As the suspense built and one twist after another appeared, there was no way I was going to put this book down before I knew how everything was going to turn out.

I recommend TRACK OF COURAGE to readers of Christian romantic suspense.

Wow! What a thrilling start to an exciting, new series! Track of Courage is filled with one action packed, heart pounding moment after another. Susan May Warren delivers a romantic, suspenseful adventure taking place in the pristine wilds of Alaska. I found myself reaching for a blanket while reading this story with the vivid descriptions of all the ice, snow, & blizzard like conditions. Loved Keely & Dawson whose struggles are easy to connect with. I loved their journey to faith, forgiveness, & love while trying to stay one step ahead of vicious killers.

Successful pop star Keely Williams aka Bliss arrives in Alaska hoping to connect with her biological mother. Before she can work up the courage to talk to her, she leaves & her plane’s hijacked & forced to crash land. Injured & stuck in blizzard like conditions, she’s rescued by a handsome ex-cop & his dog. But first, they’ll have to survive the blizzard & outwit the killer determined to end Keeley’s life.

Dawson Mulligan’s career ended when he sustained a terrible knee injury. Wracked with guilt over the past & struggling with a decision to testify against a murderer, Dawson’s looking for a new start. Caspian, the stray dog who’s adopted him, has become an emotional lifeline. When traveling to Copper Mountain, Dawson spies a downed plane & Caspian quickly takes off into the woods finding the lone survivors. Unfortunately, they aren’t alone. As a blizzard moves in & they struggle to find shelter, there’s a killer hot on their trail. An isolated community welcomes them in & they find the warmth & healing they both so desperately need until their presence puts the community in danger.

I loved this story! There were so many layers along with the nonstop action. Both Keely & Dawson are complex characters carrying a lot of baggage. Not only is Keely dealing with her fame & popularity, but she’s experiencing problems with her voice & emotional struggles associated with her past. Dawson’s a breath of fresh air & doesn’t know who she is. He accepts her for who she is & understands her. His own struggles are overwhelming enough. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing their growth as they find forgiveness, redemption, & love. I also adored Caspian! He’s right in the middle of all the chaos & though he appears untrained, he has his own secret. I loved the support he gives Dawson & all those around him when he’s not stealing socks or right underfoot.

The suspense was intense & didn’t let up. I was on the edge of my seat with every page turning, exciting moment. Though this is the first book in a new series, it was fun to see some familiar faces from previous books. So excited for the next one. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.

“Pop singer Keely Williams’s search for her biological mother in Alaska has been painfully unsuccessful. Now she just wants to escape this wild frontier and never look back,” states online regarding Susan May Warren’s novel, Track of Courage.

~ What ~
The first book in the Call of the Wild series, this 320-page advanced reader copy targets those who like a Christian contemporary romance about being hunted in rural Alaska and protected by a canine while dealing with personal issues. Focusing on suspense, topics of PTSD, illness, injuries, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. The ending includes a note to the reader, the author’s biography, and advertisements.

In this story, Keeley, an international pop star, travels to Alaska to find her birth mother and make an important decision. Without getting the answers she needs, she grabs a flight home, but the plane is hijacked and she becomes a target in the remote, wintry landscape. Dawson, an injured cop, and his adopted rescue dog find Keeley, and the two protagonists try to keep the killer at bay while they learn to trust each other and God.

~ Why ~
This is a trek across the backwoods of rural Alaska as survival of the elements becomes the focal point. I enjoyed the relationship between Keeley and Dawson, especially when Caspian, the dog, was included. The growing awareness of how the past can hinder or help the future was tender because it included God’s love and goodness. The descriptions of the terrain and the beauty of Alaska were well written.

~ Why Not
Some may not like a story that includes the importance of having a relationship with Jesus Christ, but it is not overdone. Readers who have not read other books by the author may not know the backstories of other characters. I found parts too “Hallmarkish,” and the book cookie-cutter in its plot.

~ Wish ~
Although there are prayers to God, quoted Bible verses, and hymns, the author, once again, missed the perfect opportunity to give the important eternal plan of salvation that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose the third day. I prefer all pronouns of the Almighty capitalized for reverence. A list of characters would be helpful, especially since a few are from other series.

~ Want ~
If you are into a contemporary Christian suspense romance series involving a charming rescue dog, this first book in a new series tracks courageously trusting God and not succumbing to one’s fear.

Thanks to Revell and Interviews & Reviews for this complimentary book. I am under no obligation to give a positive review.

Northern Exposure meets Twin Peaks

Track of Courage is an action-adventure, mystery, and love story that brings the Alaskan wilderness to life. Susan May Warren takes time to expose the struggles of living in the wilderness given the many challenges troubling the characters.

The story centers around a New York City pop singer Keely Williams searching for her biological mother in Alaska. Losing confidence, she gives up the hope of revealing her identity to her mom and decides to escape the wild frontier and never look back. But upon her return flight, her plane is hijacked and she's suddenly plunged into a race against not only an Alaskan blizzard but also a killer who's on her tail.

The novel also circles around an ex-cop, Dawson Mulligan, who had a career-ending injury and the stray dog he adopted—Caspian. Dawson just wants to figure out how to get his life on track, but as he was flying in a small plane home to Copper Mountain, he spots a downed aircraft and stops to help. His not-a-rescue dog runs off into the woods and discovers the trail of a missing survivor, Keely Williams. Although Dawson doesn’t know it yet, it’s up to him to stage a rescue and protect her from the killer.

The novelist shows her extensive experience by weaving the current tense story of Keely and Dawson with their past traumas, showing motivation for their steps and missteps throughout the Alaskan tundra.

Ms. Warren peppers the novel with excellent writing style. In this scene, she allows the reader to feel the tension in a room between Kelly and two residents of a small town. “And now, all the air seemed to leave the room too. Donald stiffened and Keeley lost her ability to breath. And even the woman by the fire—Nance? –looked away, her arms wrapped around her body.”

Another great example is Ms. Warren’s description of scenes. “A vapor misted off it [River], caught in the swirl of the blizzard, as if it held secrets, a lethal breath.”

The story also has a nice interplay between the prose and musical lyrics sung by our rock star protagonist, Keely.

I recommend this book, not only to Susan May Warren fans, but to all those who are looking to follow an author who writes about human struggles and accomplishments so well.

My sincere thanks to Revell and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read Track of Courage by Susan May Warren. I give my unbiased opinion of it in the following review.

"I'm convinced that nothing can happen to me in this life that isn't used or designed by God to know him better."

This book is a Christian romantic suspense taking place in Alaska and involving a pop star searching for answers and a cop on the mend who is searching for a way to come to terms with guilt and grief. There is also a dog named Caspien who plays an important part throughout the story. As I have experienced with other books by this author, there is not a lot of down time between each crisis that arises for the main characters Dawson and Keeley. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he was in the right place at the right time to be able to help save her as well as those working to keep both of them safe. The book brings forth the fact that it is God who is in control of all events and that we need to recognize how he has used us to bring glory to him as well as teach us about his will.

I enjoyed this book. The winter setting in Alaska during life threatening blizzards added to the danger and suspense of being hunted down by bad men who wanted not to just harm, but to kill. As with most romantic suspense where the characters have just met, I have to look past how fast they fall in love and just enjoy the story. This one also used quite a few references to pop culture that I was not familiar with, so they did not help me get a better picture of the character or situation in the way they were intended. The only one I knew was in reference to Little House on the Prairie. Beyond that, I enjoyed the strength and resilience both characters displayed as they faced tough situations. I was able to see what they learned and was satisfied with how the book played out. Since this is the first book in a series, there were some loose threads left unresolved. I am interested enough that I will probably pick up the next book when it becomes available.

Whoa! When you’re reading a Susan May Warren novel keep in mind that it ain’t over until it’s over! My whiplash has whiplash after all those plot twists! Be forewarned, this is the the kind of compulsive read that’s hard (impossible) to put down!

While this author excels at writing riveting action scenes, she’s also brilliant at creating stories with emotional depth and unapologetic spirituality. I’m not sure which I enjoy more — having my tummy tied in knots because of physical danger or the emotional kind! Makes for a thrilling read either way!

And such relatable characters (Dawson and Keely’s fraught romance had me in tears at the end.) But there are also cameos from some favourite heroes and heroines from previous series. Warren expertly weaves them into the story in such a way that it’s not confusing for newbie readers. Mind you, if you are an avid Warren fan, you will thrill on repeat all the way through to the end. Love the homecoming feel that brings to the story.

And the Alaska wilderness setting is a character all on its own. Stunning descriptions engaged all my senses and I came away feeling a bit frostbitten a time or two. Helped that I read ‘Track of Courage’ during a blizzard. Talk about perfect mood reading!

I listened to the audio edition narrated by Brian Hutchison and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As a rule, I prefer female narrators mostly because I find male narrators have a hard time creating the right tone of voice for female characters. They either all sound grandmotherly or cartoonishly dramatic. Not so in this case. Hutchison manages to soften his voice in such a way that it’s evident a woman is speaking without creating a high-pitch falsetto that’s hard to take seriously. So a five star performance and I’m adding him to my ‘optimum listening experience’ list for future reference.

My thanks to RB Media and Net Galley for providing me with an audio copy of this book.
