This book feels like if someone read svsss and thought to themself, “binghe could be crazier” but…not in a good way. 💀 The mc looking past all the red flags from his love interest: drugging, non consensual sex, murdering kids for some reason….the love interest was a psycho bruh.

And for some reason I KEPT GOING cause I was like “this is another character posing as the love interest there no way this is him” and it just….brushed past all of it. With all the plot holes 🥴

And THEN. When I was still hoping it’d get better….I found out via TikTok the author is racist 🙃 so….no. Do not recommend.

DNF at 1/3.

I picked this one up fairly early due to other reviewers pointing out controversial content - I found a lot of this was very vague and often times in contradiction so I thought I'd read it for myself to build my own opinion. Up until the point I have read, I didn't come across anything that fit into the controversies some reviewers mentioned and purely judging by other books of the genre, I am not convinced these accusations have merit.

That being said, this book didn't work for me for other reasons and I can see others having similar issues. It is especially sad because I actually loved the main characters narration - his vocabulary and how he describes his odd predicament of waking up a corpse with his supposed lover from a past life - also a corpse for that matter. There was also some really nice imagery involved such as the blossoming plum tree that gives them a life force.

I found myself laughing out loud a few times and I by and large understand some of the comparisons between this and SVSSS. While I don't love the cover, the art on the inside is beautiful. But that's about where the good things end. Some people are ok with toxic relationships in stories, others have a zero tolerance and I'd argue I am somewhere in between as long as things get resolved. Not having finished this, I don't know how things develop but the main love interest is pretty unhinged and this story is toxicity galore. That in addition to the otherwise humorous tone also took away from the romance - it's very hard to see this as one.

There were also elements where the humour shifted into uncomfortable territory - what ultimately led me to DNFing this was one the pooping scene followed by the main love interest cleaning the MC's butt because another man had seen the latter poop. I found it neither funny nor in any form romantic or sensual and it was just all around off putting. After a friend confirmed that the remainder of the novel continues with similar uncomfortable scenes, I've decided to let it go and instead invest my time into better danmei still waiting on my shelf. I am not sure if I would recommend this - the narration itself is super funny but otherwise it's really down to how much you're ok with toxic and unhinged love interests and don't mind uncomfortable poop humour.

November 2025 update:
So I am a person who doesn't like just believing anything I see on TikTok or Twitter comments, I prefer reading/watching/doing something and seeing for myself if what is being discussed is legit or just the internet wanting to be angry about something. The book community especially is very quick to cancel books/authors or label them problematic, and I like to see sources and proof for myself.

So, after I read this, I was told about the racial/colorist comments that come later in the book, but the only source people could point to was one tweet someone commented under some other post - no page numbers, no quotes, nothing. So, I was hesitant to just cancel this book over it.

BUT, since then, more specific sources have come out with all of those things, as well as I got my hands on the epub version of the full fan translated book to be able to confirm these things for myself. And, after reviewing all of these things, I agree that these comments are very difficult to ignore or brush off as a "the author is from China so they don't know as much about racist stuff" (which is always a bullshit excuse) and it wouldn't be okay even if they were edited out of the seven seas version.

If you're curious to see these quotes for yourself, this article here wraps up a lot of what is in the book and the commentary people are talking about with it
https://www.danmeidreams.com/racist-h...

August 2025:
I expected this book to be only silly and fun which it was but it was also much darker and also spicier than expected. I'm really curious as to where volume two is going to go with how volume 1 ended

Also some people reported that in the fan translation there were some colorist comments and jokes but I can confirm that in the Seven Seas translation these do not appear to be in the text anymore.

“My heart’s desire has already come to me. No matter your identity, or your form, it’s still you… We can start over from the beginning.”

description

Before going to the review, I will start this with—this novel is set in modern times with flashbacks to ancient days. I knew before picking it up that it came with controversies, so I went in prepared and tried to read it with caution. I wanted to finish the whole thing before passing judgment. While I expected to be disappointed, I found parts of it surprisingly engaging, even if the flaws are still noticeable. What stood out most to me were the two leads: Wang Xiaomie brings humor and humanity into strange, unsettling situations, while Wen Fengjin has a sharp, almost unreadable presence. Their back-and-forth relies on tension and wit rather than softness, making their connection fascinating but also uneasy.

The plot moves in an unpredictable rhythm that keeps you on edge. Twists arrive often, and each reveal shifts the direction in ways that feel both exciting and disorienting. At times the pacing slows, taking time to spotlight a mood or a detail, but it doesn’t fully lose momentum. The eerie touches blend well with moments of levity, and when the story leans into suspense, it manages to hold your attention. Still, the writing sometimes struggles with consistency. Dialogue shines with natural rhythm and humor, but descriptions can drag, making the prose feel uneven from chapter to chapter.

Visually and conceptually, the worldbuilding is memorable. The mausoleum, blossoms, and supernatural touches all create a dreamlike quality that’s hard to forget. It’s not a world that plays by strict rules, though, and readers who want tightly explained lore may find the choices too chaotic or emotion-driven. The story thrives on vibe rather than logic, bending the setting to highlight a tragic, gothic sense of romance. For some readers, that makes it atmospheric and mythic. For others, it may feel incoherent. For me, it landed somewhere in the middle—imaginative, sometimes moving, but not always convincing.

DNF'd at chapter 23. The chapters are short and it's easy to read, but I found myself less and less invested as time went on. While it has its funny moments, its humour is definitely not for everyone. I don't dislike Wang Xiaomie at all (his cheekiness is amusing at times), but there's really nothing to like about Wen Fengjin, and I can't get past that. The psychotic and violent Wen Fengjin might work for some, but that's not my thing. There's a lot of problematic content that, even though the tone of story is light, made it hard to feel anything but uncomfortable when they started to get closer, both emotionally and physically (though it's arguable if you can call it "getting closer" when one of them is always lying, going so far as to essentially drug the other to keep control of them and their memories). It's possible those problems are dealt with eventually - even probable, given the tone and some of the tropes employed - but I can't convince myself to continue and find out.

I went into this book completely blind, knowing nothing beyond the blurb on the back. Since I’m a sucker for reincarnation and transmigration stories, I was honestly pretty excited to dive in. Unfortunately, the execution ended up feeling… meh.

The plot has a lot of potential, but it wasn’t developed as well as it could have been. The narrative jumps back and forth between ancient times and the modern day, but I think it would’ve been much stronger if the transmigration arc had come first, followed by the reincarnation aspect later on.

What really threw me off was how quickly Wang Xiaomie accepted the idea that he’s this man’s lover reincarnated across ten lifetimes. Like hello?? Maybe give us a little doubt, hesitation, or inner conflict? 😭😭

And I can’t ignore the comparisons I’ve seen to SVSSS. Honestly, it does read like a knockoff at times, almost as if it were meant to be a BingYuan fanfic (with bingge as the LI and not bingmei) 😭

Overall, I didn’t hate the book, but it definitely could’ve been executed a lot better.

Perky, puppy-like modern man tames the heart of an unhinged ancient tyrant. It's not the most unique premise, and as someone else mentioned, this does often feel like Scum Villain fanfic, but there is enough charm and humor here to make this a thoroughly enjoyable read. There's a tiny bit of angst, but it's never in doubt that Xiaomie will forgive Fengjin almost any wrong. That may bother some readers, but the tone is light enough, and Xiaomie's combined innocence and fiestiness make up for a lot. Plus Fengjin has his cute moments too.

This very easily could have wrapped up in one volume, and I'm unsure where a second volume will lead, but I trust there will be plenty more laughs and adorable moments.

I did not like this book at all.
The story seems immature, the cover illustration too. Maybe it’s the modern aspect because I myself am I diehard historical danmei truther? Maybe. But whatever, this book is good only to serve as a cup tray for my nightstand.
Also drugging and non con is NOT a nice thing please burn this book if you own it.

I went into this book with low expectations, but I tried to keep an open mind when reading.
However, there are several issues I have with this book.
1) the lack of consistency when it comes to overall timeline/writing style. Supposedly this is set in the modern time, but it flips back and forth between modern writing and more classic style, which I found personally confusing to follow
2) the first time the couple gets together is very grey, and even though the ML acts under the guise of consent, he does not give the MC the opportunity to express consent
3) there is little to not plot in those books whatsoever. The MC wakes up one day and the ML is like “you’re my reincarnated lover” and they just… go with it? Nothing else happens
4) there are, supposedly, many racist/colorist jokes made at the expense of a side character in the original version on this novel. From what I can tell, most of this has been edited out of the 7s edition, but I cannot say since I have only read this version.
5) it feels nearly like a rip off of SVSSS, just in a slightly different way. I’m not saying that transmigration into an ancient era is purely MXTX’s idea, but there were too many similarities in my opinion that made me feel like the author was trying to play off of the success that scum had.

Overall, not a great series in my opinion.

I end the year with my first 1 star review ever. I should have dnf this book, but because I bought it, I refuse to drop it.

I had expected this book to be a xianxia and not a slice of life turn reincarnated to modern time(ish).

Overall the book was a mess that didn't know what it wanted to be. Certain concepts needed to be build up. It was interesting that WX was already transmigrated with a system but failed. But it wasn't expanded or had an influence to the plot.

I skim chapters with the graveyard robbers plotline and it ended up being nothing important. Each one dies and the brothers ended up being pointless.

Conflicts were resolved conveniently. My main issue being WX forgiving WF for grape and mass murder of his classmates.

Again, it had an interesting plot were WX question if WF loved him as he is now or the old version he knew in his previous life. But because WX was deprived of love, he accepted WF affection. Only to be revealed that WF knew about the transmigration and WX acted the same way as he is now. Afterwards, it was never brought up again.

I hate to end the year with this book, but I procrastinate long enough to finish it.

At some point, I started actively disliking this book. A lot of other reviewers mention the infamous "latrine and butt wiping scene", and while it was bad and super uncomfortable, it's not my biggest issue with this book.

The characters:
Our MC's are either massive creeps (Wen Fengjin) or super passive "hehe he's hot, i don't care he's treating me like I'm his pet" idiots (Wang Xiaomie). Apart from that, they lacked actual depth. I had to look up their names because I couldn't remember them. The supporting cast aka "the graverobbers" and "monsters" is made up of too many (unimportant!) characters. I got confused a lot.

The story:
Started out kind of interesting but fizzled out pretty quickly, unfortunately. It was really dragging on at times. The scenes involving the grave robbers were even oftentimes straight up boring - and pointless.
Apparently our MC Wang Xiaomie is not only a resurrected corpse, but a person that just keeps reincarnating?? A system is also mentioned, so I guess it's another "I got reincarnated as the deceased beloved of the demon lord" thing?? What?? And at the same time Wen Fengjin says that he took his body after he died, fed him weird stuff to keep his corpse from rotting, and placed him next to a resurrection tree. So we have three different versions (1. He was reincarnated, 2. He transmigrated, 3. He got resurrected)??

I can't believe they referenced cola and captain America.

The writing style:
My biggest issues with the writing are definitely the, at times, unclear timelines and connections. The author would mention two characters in action and suddenly describe someone completely different. I already had problems keeping all the characters straight, this just confused me more. There's also some weird censoring going on.

I'm actually miffed that this book turned out to be such a disappointment. As it is, I won't be coming back for the second book.

This book is more on the dark comedy side, and if it was meant to be only a parody, then it is actually a pretty good one at that. However, some scenes and events are meant to be serious, which makes me wonder whether the reader should take this story seriously or just regard it as a parody. If we should take it seriously, then an otherwise well-written parody becomes a mediocre story.

The author uses all the tropes of a typical transmigration danmei, where the MC gets transmigrated into a novel with an ancient setting, there's a system giving him tasks to make the ML change for the better, and thus inadvertently making the ML fall in love with him. The unique aspect of this story, however, is that we get to see our MC, Wang Xiaomie, and the ML, Wen Fengjin, after the transmigration took place, and instead of living happily ever after like the heroes of any such stories, the MC dies gruesomely in the end, only to wake up in the modern day as a zombie. Well, sort of.

The negative aspect of this story lies in the characterisation and the backstories. Wang Xiaomie is an innocent guy who, most of the time, feels younger than his actual age. And then there's Wen Fengjin, who acts just like the ML of a dark romance novel, manipulating, drugging the MC, and lying to him about everything that happened because he is aware that Wang Xiaomie cannot remember anything, and he wants him to remain this way. We even get glimpses into Wen Fengjin's thoughts, where he clearly wants to make Wang Xiaomie stay with him forever, almost like a prisoner. We even get hints that in the past, Wang Xiaomie didn't even want to let him touch him, and now he will make Wang Xiaomie so dependent on him that he will be unable to leave him. While insisting that he is not Wang Xiaomie but the previous owner of the body, Mian Deng, whom he loves greatly. I can't tell how much I hated this total red flag of a ML, only to turn out that he isn't such a bastard after all. Since, of course, everything he did, he did it for Wang Xiaomie; it was all in his interest. As their past is finally revealed, it turns out that Wen Fengjin really did everything in his power to save Wang Xiaomie, and really did love him. And he still does, that's why he is trying to figure out a way to keep him alive. Their love was actually mutual; he knew that he transmigrated and loved him, not the original owner of the body, so their story is not so dark; everything is happy, let's rejoice. I don't like dark romances, so I'm actually happy with the outcome. However, the delivery is somewhat lacking, as this turn of events is too sudden; the pacing of the plot is off, there's barely any foreshadowing, and the characters don't have enough time to grow.

As a result, the characters seem too flat, one-dimensional. Their backstories are thrown in too quickly, too briefly to truly feel and experience the devastation of their past and the depth of their love. The only two characters, who I believe were actually portrayed well, are Xiao Luo and Zhen Bei. They are also one-dimensional, Xiao Luo being the simple, naive youth, while Zhen Bei is the evil antagonist, but at least their characters are believable. Even though Zhen Bei appeared harmless at first, there was something about him that made me feel aversion towards him; I couldn't like him at all. So that was well-portrayed because he turned out to be much worse than at first glance. While Xiao Luo remained a naive youth from start to finish. But I imagined Lei-jie to be much older than her actual age.

I know that the backstory's only purpose was to explain how the MCs got to the present situation, but it wasn't well executed, the pacing was too rushed; we didn't get to feel the weight of all the things that happened in the past. This is especially true of Yan Chun, who appears with his unrequited love out of the blue, and tells us how wronged he feels, just like anyone would in his shoes, only to be discarded and killed too suddenly for the reader to actually feel his pain, and try to understand the reasoning behind his cruel actions. As a result, he becomes a pathetic, laughable pseudo-villain before the actual antagonist arrives to take his place.

Near the end of the book, Lei-jie gives a good summary of the actions of many characters in this novel when talking about herself: "It's not good to get too greedy, or I'll end up losing myself."

The novel as a whole is okay for its unique premise, but the characters are too one-dimensional and flat, and the pacing is rushed. There are some parodically funny scenes in it, and the story is definitely not boring. However, the delivery of the plot is not that good. Not to mention how annoying it could get when there's a characteristic that just keeps being mentioned about a character every damn time he is described, so it gets repetitive and annoying extremely quickly. Also, it would have been better if more was shown instead of told to the reader. The story wasn't boring, but it would have been better as a standalone novel. I will read the second volume, hoping to get some answers and more info about their past. This wasn't that bad, not to read the rest, but not so good either to read it again.

I think this book could totally work for folks who really like unhinged "love" interests. I underestimated just how unhinged and am coming off of reading a veritable shit-ton of extremely wholesome stories so the shift was just too jarring/dramatic and I'm not gonna finish this, at least not right now.

But if you are in the mood for that flavor, the MC is really quite funny so I wouldn't write this story off completely and it might be worth a shot.

i was determined to finish but i can't take it anymore, so im dropping this at 168. I don't know if things are lost in translation, but this is just bad. The mc is insanely stupid and just, for the lack of a better word, cringe in a way that makes me want to rip my own eyes out. He reads like a horny clueless teenaged boy, not a grown ass man. The love interest feels like a poor man's copy of Luo Binghe without any of the qualities that make Binghe so beloved to me. There is no chemistry between the two, not even sexual chemistry, there is barely any plot, so much time spent waffling on about meaningless shit and imo it makes no sense: was the mc transmigrated or reincarnated or both? like huh???

this is so stupid and I hate that I wasted my time. At least I didn't waste money since I borrowed this from a library.

Also we don't have to know about whatshisface going to the latrine. That's something a ten year old would find funny. That's gross.

So, this book was pretty interesting. I really hesitated to read it because of a lot of the discourse around it containing colorism. I don’t know if the colorism shows up in the next book, or if it’s been removed, or if the prior translations were poor - but I didn’t see any real colorism in this book. The only thing I can think is one of the characters, who is quite dirty, winds up smearing more dirt on his face at a point and it is described as “making him even darker.” To me, this isn’t necessarily even referring to his skin. Therefore, I don’t have any issues with this book, at least. But that is the warning that I’ve seen about this series, so YMMV.

This book is kinda weird. The tone is very different from anything I’ve read in the west, and primarily reminds me of a few manhwa/manhuas. It is simultaneously exceptionally light and rather comedic, while also dealing with some incredibly dark topics. It’s a dark comedy, heavy on the romance. This could have been a *very* different book, and arguably much more…literary? High-level? If those dark topics could actually be explored more in-depth. I think that’s where it loses a star for me. The author has created some really interesting and complex characters, who don’t get explored and occasionally do things that seem possibly out of character for the comedic effect. And I just couldn’t seem to let go of the potential while reading. It’s definitely not at all like the fully comedic danmei I’ve read, like The Disabled Tyrant’s Beloved Pet Fish, so if you’re looking for something like that, this isn’t it. So, take my thoughts with a grain of salt that this may simply be a genre of danmei I am unused to!

Looking at these characters, the MC is cute and clueless. I really don’t mind him, he’s a nice character and I *do* love the image of cute bouncy boy taming his mass murderer bf. “I can fix him” on steroids. He gets over the many red flags out ML sports with approximately zero qualms.
there is transmitigation here, or rather, it’s post-transmitigation. It’s a super interesting aspect of the MC, that really adds a lot of depth, but unfortunately doesn’t get a lot of focus time. It’s literally like three pages.
.

Contrary to some of the reviews, I don’t really have a ton of issues with the ML. Yeah, he’s killed tons of people. But a lot of them make sense? Especially for a guy from the 1300s. He’s all about revenge, fighting back, and protecting his beloved. I think it’s wrong, of course, but it’s understandable for the time this guy was living in when he committed most of the acts.
after all, he’d watched *his* entire family be killed so the ML is acting much like everyone else in this time period
. Many of the other deaths are literally self-defense or protection of the home. I really enjoy the through-line of the MC helping the ML to solve his problems with less violence. The *only* thing that really bothered me, was a *potential* rape description. It is a single throwaway line around pg. 280, and I’m not entirely sure if that’s actually what happened. From my reading, it would be out of character for the ML, who seems pretty focused on no harm coming to the MC, but that would be unforgivable if that’s what happened. I’m choosing to say it didn’t and that everything is fine, but YMMV.

The side characters are pretty poorly developed. I can’t say I really understand who any of the antagonists are, or their motivations. This is where it reads like a manhua to me, they are just villains because we need some people to fight. Again, if you can let go and read it as merely slapstick humor, then I suppose this isn’t a problem. But it *feels* like there’s much more to them. One of them is definitely hinted at having a pretty huge backstory but it’s explained with a few lines that, to be honest, didn’t make sense to me
but it doesn’t seem like we’re getting more out of him, since he’s literally dead by 3/4ths of the way through lol
.

As I’ve kind of already described, the pacing is also kinda inconsistent, and things get explained away quite quickly in order to keep the focus on the comedy and romance. It feels like if the author had just slowed down, and really taken their time (and had a resulting 4-5 books instead of two), we would have some characters and plot lines that could be super meaningful and interesting. I almost took another star off for this, but I’m trying to give the benefit of the doubt that this is as it’s intended.

I’ll be honest, the cover wasn’t really my favorite. But after reading, the MC is basically described as a looking like a girl, and having extremely long hair. So I guess that’s book accurate, although I actually don’t agree that the ML is described as looking all grey like that at all. I know everyone has been saying the quality of Seven Seas has been going down basically since they started doing danmei, so I hate to jump on that train. But there were some pretty glaring errors here. At one point an entire line is attributed to the wrong character. There is also a decent amount of terminology here that would have benefited from more footnotes, rather than shoving stuff into the ever-expanding glossary section. Lack of true section breaks continues to be a pain point, and this is so easily solved with additional spacing or a cute little doily line across the page that I just don’t understand *why* they’re not there. It’s especially difficult in books that have a lot of different POVs, which this one does.

Those are my thoughts, I think I *will* continue reading. I got this one out of the library to avoid paying in case of colorism, but so far so good on that front. I’m not sure the plot lines being set up at the end of the novel interest me all that much (I don’t like modern settings) but I’ll probably give it a try. Honestly, I think without the last chapter or two this could easily have been a standalone novel. So yeah, it’s a little weird but probably worth reading if you are looking for danmei.

My Husband and I Sleep in the Same Coffin begins with a premise that sounds bizarre but potentially fun: a transmigrated MC, a mysterious husband, death, resurrection, and an eerie, gothic tone that suggests dark romance and intrigue. Unfortunately, what starts as a quirky, chaotic setup quickly spirals into a confusing mess of overlapping tropes, inconsistent worldbuilding, and narrative choices that make it difficult to understand not just where the story is going, but what kind of story it even wants to be.

The Actual Experience

Danmei can already be demanding: complicated names, a large cast, layered relationships, and heavy lore are par for the course. I went into this book knowing nothing — not even the synopsis — trusting the title and cover vibes. That, in hindsight, was my first mistake.

At first, I was even having fun. The transmigration element felt quirky, the MC seemed odd but manageable, and I was ready to let the chaos cook. Then the book started throwing trope after trope at me with zero restraint: systems, multiple transmigrations, possible game/novel mechanics, shifting timelines, sudden POV changes, and random flashbacks that interrupt the narrative just as you’re trying to understand what’s happening.

The storytelling is deeply messy. POVs jump from MC to ML to vague snippets of the past with little warning, making it hard to stay grounded in the present. Time itself becomes unreliable — what starts as a historical danmei abruptly pivots into something that feels modern, with no proper transition or justification. The result is narrative whiplash.

The MC is also not a reliable narrator — not in a clever or intentional way, but because he genuinely understands nothing about his situation and constantly misses important details. This could have worked if handled well, but instead it adds another layer of confusion. His personality doesn’t help either: “quirky” quickly turns into baffling, including repeated moments where he literally barks like a dog for reasons that remain unknown and deeply unnecessary.

The ML is… off-putting. He technically fits the “yandere yearning top” archetype, but in a way that feels unsettling rather than compelling. There are moments that raise serious questions about consent and past actions, and the book never addresses these concerns clearly enough to let the reader understand what is intentional horror, what is romance, and what is just bad writing. The relationship between MC and ML remains morally and emotionally murky in a way that feels accidental rather than deliberate.

By the time the second volume rolls around — a volume that is somehow longer than the first — the story fully collapses under its own weight. If I had to describe this work overall, I’d say it feels like a low-budget, badly edited fanfiction of Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System, but more chaotic, more deranged, and with far less narrative discipline. New plots and tropes are introduced constantly, rarely resolved, and often forgotten.

Even after finishing, I found myself re-reading sections just to confirm that yes, it really was written this badly. Some of my earlier concerns might technically be “wrong,” but not because the text clarifies them — rather because the story itself is so incoherent that certainty feels impossible.

The only genuine redeeming factor is the art. The internal illustrations are stunning and easily the best part of the entire experience. Unfortunately, good art can’t save a story that feels this disorganized.

Final Rating

⭐ 1.5 stars, rounded down to 1 star.

This was confusing, exhausting, and deeply frustrating — a book I continued reading not out of enjoyment, but out of spite and morbid curiosity.

And yet.

Mama raised no bitch, so… see you in the second volume of this horrific duology.

(Hatred truly does wonders.) 🫡📚🔥

You've heard of feel good romance, now get ready for our brand new product: feel bad romance!

ML does all this fucked up shit, is so creepy and unsettling, but MC forgives him so it's all fine. It's BL logic, don't think about it too hard or your brain will melt.

It got better towards the end since we (royal "we") decided to glibly ignore reason and stick with it until the end, they end up in a kind of sweet dynamic. This one also has an afterword from the author and a longer bio than I'm used to from danmei authors' works in translation so I almost feel a little bad that her book isn't getting very positive reviews, but I really can't say that I loved this one. It was readable, and I wanted something quick and not too emotionally taxing before I finally brave some of the longest danmei series out there (I'm planning on starting Erha and BAB soon!). I might still read the second one when it comes out. Only as an e-book though, not a fan of the covers at all, I really don't understand why they went with these covers when the inside illustrations are so much more beautiful.

Overall pretty funny.
Never takes itself to seriously. The Lead is basically just a little goofy guy and the Love Interest is a completely unhinged Yandere trying to pretend they aren't which makes for a LOT of the comedy due to the fact the book never takes this seriously.

Could have also made for a really good Horror Novel if it did.

That said, your enjoyment of the book is going to boil down to how much you can stand the main character, Xiaomei. There were times I found him grating, and while it helped move the plot I wasn't always thrilled how he just refused to think about things.

I'm told the series has an issue with racism and colourism, but neither I nor some of my friends who read it saw it in this book. There is a Volume 2 that just came out that we plan to read and I plan to update this review when I get to it in the backlog if the racism/colourism is present or not.

Knocked off points because Xiaomei used the 'I am a Goofy Idiot' and 'I am an annoying idiot' lines of character development like a jump rope most of the time.

I started this to kill time while waiting for the final volume of Peerless to be released, thinking I would only read a bit here and there as I heard it wasn't that great. I finished it in like 5 days. Is it an epic novel? No. But it's not horrible either. It's not complicated, doesn't have a million characters, only has 2 volumes and is easy to follow.
I feel some parts could of been explained upon - like the backstory between that Yan guy and Wen Fengjin and what really happened 1,000 years ago. Also Wang Xiaomie mentions that there is a system similar to Svsss but it was glossed over, and the system doesn't seem to give quests or anything.
People seem to not like Wen Fengjin. Yes, he is posessive. Yes, he killed innocent people and did some shady things. So did Wen Ke Xing, Mo Ran, Zhou Zishu, Wei Wuxian, Xue Yang. Nie Huaisang, Jin Guangyao ect. He had a legit reason too and feel like the haters did not finish the volume.

It was cute, and a slightly interesting take on isekai.
It would have been a bit more interesting if the story delved more into the their previous life romance.

The Yan character felt a bit random. A bad guy was needed, so he got thrown in, but he was somehow connected to the characters 1000 years ago?? But nothing much was said about it. Maybe those details will show up in book 2...but seems unlikely since the story felt wrapped up for the most part.
Also, what happened to Mu brother 2?
All in all, the characters were endearing, the Mu brother 3 revenge was solid if not a bit dark. And the sword shifu was a funny extra.

Okay, so... This one is pretty trashy. Lots of cringy humor, especially in the first third of the book that almost made me drop the whole thing and the dynamic between the main characters isn't super well written though that COULD be the fault of the translation, I'm unsure.

The love interest is the edgy, dark, problematic sort which I actually love and is the reason I kept on reading... And there ARE lots of tropes in here I enjoy, just a lot of them aren't well executed.

That said I'm probably still gonna read the second book when it comes out, even if it turns out to be trash too, lol.

It was entertaining and full of twists and turns, and more plot twists than I care to count. I laughed so hard at some points I had to put it down. It wasn't the greatest piece of literature, but despite the glaring character flaws (the mc barks? and the ml is a walking red flag), it was light and very interesting. Some of the plot twists even gave me psychic damage, though not because they were bad but because I really wasn't expecting it. I genuinely enjoyed this and I don't understand the low rating.

I picked this up because I’m a Seven Seas danmei junkie and was excited to check out their latest license. How disappointing… this reads like a less interesting SVSSS crackfic (mind you, SVSSS already reads like danmei crackfic in the best way possible). I didn’t find the characters endearing and the humor fell flat for me. The pacing was good and the plot twist is cool. I’ll be donating my copy and won’t be reading volume 2.
