A Witch’s Night Out #3

Fireworks at Midnight: A Witch's Night Out

Rate this book
Recent college graduate and part-time cat familiar Dulcina “Sweets” Gato is having the worst New Year’s Eve in living memory. End of year expenses trigger serious cash flow problems, and her microwave just went up in smoke. To make matters worse, her best friend’s overprotective big brother is back in town, and his return threatens to put a huge crimper on her nocturnal activities. The only thing she can look forward to is Madame Eve’s 1-Night Stand service. After all, she’s sick and tired of being a 21-year-old virgin.

Enforcement Agent Mikal Knight is a warlock on a mission. Having finally scored a transfer to Washington, D.C., he’s now at liberty to pursue the object of his desires—his baby sister’s best friend. But first, he has a vigilante to track down and a mysterious matchmaking service to investigate. Sent on an undercover operation, he resigns himself to a pointless 1-Night Stand on New Year’s Eve. As luck would have it, his mystery date’s identity might let him kill several birds with one stone.

This is the third entry in the ‘Witch’s Night Out’ series, and the formula is familiar (get it? Witch – Familiar? Okay, groan already).
The great thing is that this familiarity in no way dampens the enjoyment to be had from each of these feisty novellas. The writing is excellent, and the characters are clearly portrayed and individual. What I’m really loving is the way that each instalment further develops the world, building on what’s been established in previous ones, like ripples expanding in water.
This story revolves around Dulcina Gato, who has appeared as an ‘off stage’ character in the first two books. The wrinkle this time is that ‘Sweets’, as she’s known, has the power of precognition. It’s on a really short time scale, so if she’s to alter the events she foresees, she has to act swiftly, while simultaneously making sure no one realises what she’s doing, if she’s to stay off the Council’s radar.
So it’s unfortunate that the brother of her house mate and business partner just happens to be a Council Enforcement warlock. And that Sweets has had the hots for him forever.
Cue another clueless couple gifted a one night stand from the mysterious Madame Eve, and the New Year’s Eve firework display is as spectacular inside Mikal Knight’s car as out.
Have to say I did raise an eyebrow at the naming of our hero, and wondered if his car might enter the conversation at some point, but perhaps it was too busy averting its sensors from events unfolding within...

I received a reviewer's copy of this book from Masquerade Book Tours in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book's blog tour promotions.

Like the book that came before this, Fireworks At Midnight ended right when things were just starting to look exciting. I wanted Dulcina and Mikal to have more time together. It just seemed to short.

I actually liked this book better than Frosty Relations because the chemistry between the hero and the heroine in this book was more believable and obvious. With Mina and Jack, it was difficult for me to imagine the two of them together. But with Dulcina and Mikal, the sparks were there from their very first scene together.

I also liked that Dulcina was a secret vigilante and Mikal was an agent. I wish that their story was longer. However, I have to say that it was an enjoyable read, and even if I complain about its length, it does not mean that I did not like reading it because I did.

There isn’t a Tara Quan novel I’ve read that I haven’t loved. She has a fresh voice that makes me laugh out loud throughout while reading. And boy can she pack in the heat.

I love a friends to lovers’ trope. Add that both Dulcina and Mikal (totally yummy) are magical beings with amazing powers and enough attraction flaring between them to burn up the pages and you had me at hello. A fast entertaining read that ushered me into the new year.

Dulcina Gato, known to her friends as "Sweets" is having the worst New Years Eve in history. She is a witch and she can turn into a cat that makes her magic even stronger. Her day started out bad because she needs coffee and her coffee maker quit on her, so no coffee for her. Then she tried to cook something in the microwave for breakfast and that blows up on her and almost catches the house on fire. If that's not enough, her best friend Shelley 's brother named Mikal Knight who has had a crush on Dulcina from early on after she became friends with Shelley.

Sweets also gets visions that show part of her future but the visions only give a sample and sometimes it's hard to make out what exactly it is but with the one vision she had there was no doubt it was about Mikal and her being together. Sweets has never acted on her feelings for Mikal because she doesn't want to lose Shelley has a friend, so she keeps her distance from Mikal but he just won't leave her alone.

Mikal is an enforcement wizard that is suppose to investigate a matchmaking service and to make sure that this service isn't using mind control to get their clients. But while he is doing this he is also keeping his eye on Dulcina and it's just getting harder and harder to try to leave her alone.

I did love the characters but since this is part of a series and I haven't read the series, I was a little lost but you can read it without reading the series. I just didn't have more information on Dulcina and her magic. I thought the scene in the car was funny and very cramped. It's a quick read that made me laugh and I really was routing for Dulcina to finally become happy with someone that loved her back and she wished she could let her visions come true and she could be with Mikal but that was another can of worms that she wasn't about to open. Give this book a read because it's got great humor and the characters are easy to get to know, and it ends when you least expect it. Enjoy!

What could possibly be worse than a morning without coffee? A man as dark as it coming to your rescue, who you have avoided for years. Dulcina, or Sweets, as everyone but Mikal Knight called her, was a struggling artist, familiar to a shut in earth mage, and in desperate need of a fun night out. Mikal, or Midnight, is an agent for a magical group called Enforcement, and half-brother to the earth mage Sweets shared a house, and a business with.

The thing I love most about this story is the fact that Sweets has visions of the future, a gift of precognition, very strong visions if something is about to happen, and has spent her adult life altering situations where she would end up connecting with Mikal. I love the lesson she learns that sometimes, in books, authors have a sick sense of humor, and play fate like a harp string. Without giving too much away let me say that the wait was worth it.

Tara Quan writes a fun and steamy romance story, she details every situation well, until you feel like you could be watching a movie, not reading a book. This couple is fun, and addictive. I wish this story was longer, because I could spend days lost in the playfulness between them, and the eroticism her writing offers.

I give this story five stars my only criticism would be the length of the story which to me is not anything more than like standing at the end of a concert and cheering encore.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all 3 books in this series. Fireworks at Midnight was no exception. I only wish it was longer. The others were a little more humourous than this one but this particular novel had more suspense and a more natural flow for Dulcina (Sweets) and Mikal (her best friend's older brother) to fall in bed with each other. After all, they have known each other for most of their lives and Sweets has had a crush on Mikal since puberty. Mikal's feelings have been very much the same since he realized she wasn't a teenager anymore as well. However, he is an enforcement agent who could get her in trouble for her precognitive abilities she has not registered as having and her secret extracurricular activities at night in the big city. When Mikal finds out, she will be in a world of trouble.
Mikal is so overprotective but in a way that makes him incredibly sexy and irresistible. Dulcina is so worried about the rumours of what the enforcement agency does to precogs though that she keeps avoiding the situations that result in them kissing as she sees them in advance. I love how he can use his air elemental powers in ways I had never considered. Very hot. I do wish this had been expanded into a longer novel though. There were so many elemenets introduced that could have made this more suspenseful and drawn out the hotness just a little tantalizingly longer without compromising the story.

This series has quickly become one of my favorite by Tara Quan, if not the favorite. They're fast paced, have delightfully quirky heroines, deliciously hunky heroes, and plenty of steam to warm up any winter night. This latest edition to the series fully lives up to the expectations set by the first two books and definitely does not disappoint, though for some reason that I can't quite define, this one fell just a tad bit short for me. That said, this one also has me a bit excited for the future of the series, for we get to delve into the workings of the magical community a bit more here and see how their self-governing works. This look inside gave us a glimpse of conflicts that have been simmering and may or may not be gaining prominence, as well as some hints about some possibly major changes that are in store. All of this speaks to a larger story to be told in this universe, which means more books (possibly even longer ones?), which is all to the good as far as I'm concerned.

This is the third book in the Witch's Night Out series and the best part for me is that each story is individual, whilst following a familiar idea. This way means that you get a fresh story each time, whilst the world and character building can move on from where it last left off. This means that you end up with a rich and detailed world with characters that are three-dimensional and you can relate to, without having a massive back-story or information dump going on.

Sweets and Mikal deserve to be together, they have crushed on each from afar long enough. The time is now to make a move - but who will move first, and what does fate have in store before they can? This is a quick and light-hearted read that will satisfy your need for a steamy coffee break book. Whilst it is the third in a series, I would say it could be read as a standalone, but reading the other two will definitely help give you a more enriched view. Definitely recommended for all fans of paranormal romance.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book; the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Although the other 2 books in this series were good fun I have to say that this one is by far my favorite so far. What with a precog shifter trying to stop fates intervention by never alowing what she sees with Mikal to happen. And a elemental that has been working to make a future with her possible. These two characters definitely had chemistry in spades and they have a close relationship before it happens. The natural flow of this book was specacularly written. There was action, some suspence, a little mystery, and a romance with a little kick.
Dulcina (sweet) doesn't want to risk her friendship with Mikal and her best friend but its getting a little hard to continually beet the future. And Mikal has changed his life plans inorder to make it so Dulcina could have a future, hopefully with him. I loved these two charcters because they were great seperate and even better together.
This is one Tara Quan book you don't want to miss.

Dulcina known as Sweets is a witch with the gift of foresight is struggling with her life. It's New Years eve and the day just keeps getting worse. Tired of waiting around for her roommate Shelly's brother Mikal to notice her. She decides to meet her blind date from Madam Eve's dating service. Mikal is going undercover to discover if Madam Eve is using mid control to pair of soul mates or if it legitimate. Mikal has been keeping a eye on Sweets for years, he would like to do so much more to her. When they find out each other is the blind date Mikal realizes that Madam Eve is legit. He has been waiting for Sweets to finish what she always starts but backs off on.

Enjoyable short read. It does you leaving kind of hanging at the end. But since these are a series of books I figure it will continue in the next book.

The third installment of Tara Quan’s Witch’s Night Out series is FIREWORKS AT MIDNIGHT, a novella length story set in Washington D.C.

All three of the novellas in the series are based around a dating service for one night stands that caters to witches and warlocks. The premise is fun and sexy and the idea that magical folk have trouble getting dates is a fun twist.

Both Mikal and Dulcina are delightfully written and are supported by interesting characters. The premise may be far-fetched but Tara Quan’s writing makes it work.

It’s fun and sexy and totally worth the time!

Tara Quan's "Fireworks at Midnight" is the third tale in the A Witch's Night Out series, but you can read it as a standalone. I love how the books have holiday events in them. I love the imagery on New Year's Eve. Great level of detail for a novella. The nookie is super sexy. I could almost feel it! <3 A sexy bit of candy for sure.

Okay, for being a 1 Night Stand Book. This book had so may potential to be a single book. If only the author would of continued to book.

Yes, the book was good but I wish books that you get into you can actually finish and get a sense of everything. Not just a short bleep like this one. Oh well.

A sexy, fun read. I liked the world building with the witches, agency, etc. There was enough info not to feel lost, but no info dump. Thank you!
