A quick look at the stages of life for an old world swallowtail butterfly.

This is a great nonfiction read for beginning readers. It is very light on text, with just enough to tell about each of the stages of growth and change for this butterfly. The text is accompanied by eye-catching photographs. There's a diagram of the life cycle in the back along with a quick vocabulary activity. Hand this one to butterfly lovers and nature lovers who are just starting to read.

1. N/A
2. This book is appropriate for preK-3rd grade.
3. This is a informational book about the life cycle of a butterfly. The book begins with a butterfly laying an egg and goes through the cycle from egg, to caterpillar, to pupa, to butterfly. The book includes real life pictures along each page. This is a great book that includes each detail of the life cycle including the caterpillar eating, what he eats, and amount of time between each stage.
4. At the end of the book the author includes a small game matching the name of the stage to a picture of the stage. The beginning of the book has a great spot where the author includes a "vocabulary tree" including words that are found in the book under what the butterfly does and what words are part of the life cycle. I really liked that the author included the vocabulary tree at the beginning of the book given gate reader new vocabulary to be on the look out for while reading.
5. This would be a great book to use for a reading lesson on informational texts where the students identify facts or for a science lesson on the life cycle of a butterfly.

Nonfiction books can - and should - be engaging. This one was not. While visually eye-catching, the information was boring. This was a choice for school reading for my kindergarten, and it was a dud. Definitely not a choice I would make for getting kids interested in reading nonfiction.

This book is a nonfiction texts about the life cycle of a butterfly. There is not much detail at all, but would be able to effectively and efficiently teach students about what happens in the life of a butterfly before it actually becomes a butterfly.

A gorgeous nonfiction about the life cycle of the butterfly. Photographs and labels offer nonfiction text elements.
