When I first heard about Defenseless I knew I had to read it. I fell in love with the Diamond Girls and getting to read a new story from one of the girls was an opportunity I could not miss.

Defenseless is Claire and Ryker's story, and while I cant remember much about Claire from previous stories, I didn't have to worry about missing out on anything as the author has done a great job of introducing you to Claire.

Ryker was a hard person to like when we first meet him. He came across as arrogant, selfish, and unreasonable. Having Tayla's input on the matter only helped to solidify my feelings towards him. But as we get to know him and we see that he can actually act like a human and show kindness to others then I did begin to slowly change my feelings towards him. By the time the book was over I loved him just as much as the other characters in this series.

The Diamond Girls have set their sights on entering Cheer America, and to do this they need to practice, practice, and practice. However when they lose one of their team all hope is lost, until Ryker is recruited to join them, and his partner is Claire. Claire is non too pleased about this new predicament she finds herself in, but if she refuses to co-operate then the Diamond Girls can't participate in Cheer America. Stuck with no other choice she reluctantly teams up with Ryker, and ends up finding out more about him than she ever planned to do.

Defenseless is a story of hope, of loss, of friendships, and of fighting to the end. We see how much Ryker has lost in his life, and what he has had to deal with. His own family quick to judge and blame and ensure that everyone knows their version of the truth, spreading vicious rumours to all who will listen. Claire is also feeling a lot of emotion herself. She is feeling guilty about the accident and blames herself for the other person's actions, this affects her ability to sleep, to eat, to feel anything but guilt and sadness, making it hard for her to concentrate on school and cheer.

Defenseless was an unputdownable read, it made me cry, it made me laugh, and it made me gasp in sock over some revelations. I really enjoyed the progression of the story, it didn't feel rushed at all, and it also felt real. The emotions that we experience through Claire were hard hitting, but very real, and I could not only sympathise, but also empathise with her. The ending of the book was deserved by all and I loved the little touch of respect that they did. I really hope that we get to meet more of the Diamond Girls in another story.

Claire Reilly is the outgoing and fun girl of the X-Factor cheer gym Diamond Girls. Her best friend, Tayla, is like a sister to her on the cheer squad, and in an epic disaster, Tayla responds to a text message while driving. If only she knew the #X symbol...
The opening two chapters were a punch in the feels, as is the rest of the Diamond Girl series. This is the ending of the trilogy, a series with good moral points without being preachy and is realistic. Kids today need to see the consequences of their actions and situations, and reading about the Diamond Girls is a good start. Let me assure you, no text is worth your life. It can wait, no matter how pushy your friends are. It's okay to wait. Put the cell into the trunk of your car if you have to.
Claire's response is complete survivor's guilt. She feels the consequences of texting Tayla while she was driving, and has a difficult time getting through it. She loves her friend, but can't stop blaming herself for what happened, and the consequences of what's going to happen to her cheer team.
Guys like Ryker are a dream. He loved his family, is self-sufficient, and makes no excuses. I've yet to meet a guy like that in real life, but here's to hoping. He's a gentleman, deep down, and misunderstood at best, looking for redemption.
I'd really encourage teenagers especially to read this book. I want all teenagers (and a few adults I know) to stop texting while driving, and I think this book really shows the results. I hope any kid who reads this book takes into account the cost of texting while driving.
In the mean time, I will lament that there will not be a fourth book in the series about Erin.

Defenseless was a great read and I feel lucky to have been able to read an early review copy. I love cheer (I'm on a level-5 team) and I thought the Diamond Girl's journey was very realistic. I really enjoyed Claire and Ryker's story despite the sad storyline that brought them together. It was great to see the rest of the Diamond Girls and their guys as well. Really enjoyed.

The Diamond Girls is one of my favourite series to work with because as a Cheerleader myself I love that element. Like books 1 and 2 Defenseless is a gritty YA novel and tackles serious issues as well as being on the steamier side (but still suitable for teens!).

This book deals with losing someone close to you and not judging someone before getting to know them.

This book will make you teary eyed so make sure to have tissues close by whilst reading.

I was so excited to get an early copy of this book! Elisa Dane created complete awesomeness in Defenseless. I loved the bond that Claire and her Diamond Girls had throughout the whole story. It proves that strong friendships can withstand any tragedy...AND...who doesn't love strong male characters??? Ryker Vaughn is...HOT...HOT...HOT!!!!

On a side note...I loved the tough old lady Birdie in this story. She was classic!!!

This is the 3rd and last book of the Diamond Girls Trilogy. Ms. Dane has dealt with real issues in each book and this one centers around texting and driving. This book has an important message and would especially be great for teenagers and college age to read, but it's a good lesson for anyone as this problem is not just a problem among the youth. I love how Ms. Dane is not afraid to write about tough subjects. Claire and Ryker's story was so emotional! My heart just broke for both Claire and Ryker. Claire had such a hard time handling the death of her best friend and felt responsible. Ryker was devastated at the loss of his cousin and the only one in his family to have anything to do with him. Claire and Ryker's loss draws them together. Ms. Dane had me feeling all of the emotions being felt by Ryker and Claire, bringing me to tears! Even though Ryker was handling his own pain and emotions over his loss, he was Claire's rock. Steadily there for her through the pain, he helped her to find a reason to smile again. Together they were able to heal and piece their broken hearts back together. Seeing Ryker's love, tenderness and compassion for his landlady helped Claire to see the true Ryker. Again Ms. Dane gave us a beautifully written story of pain, dealing with loss, healing and finding love. You will not regret picking this up to read! Absolutely loved it!

This series, I can't even begin to tell you how much I have loved every page. It really makes you think about the stereotypes that we label people with before actually knowing them as a person. We all do it, not always in a mean way.. but if you would have told me that a series about competitive high school cheer leaders would make me laugh out loud and bring me to tears, I would have judged the books but their covers. With that being said I am so glad I gave them a chance. This story has everything you would want in the main characters; a kindhearted girl on the outside, but a strong willed athlete driven by her passions, and a bad boy with an attitude, but so caring and devoted when you peel the layers back. I loved reading the struggles that the characters had to go through in order to grow and learn from their past. And oh if I had a "Birdie" in my life to listen to I would! Nothing is easy, people are not always who you think they are, and everyone deserves a chance.

4 stars - An enjoyable, romantic story that hit some feels and twisted my heart!

I really enjoyed the first two Diamond Girls books. They had clear messages, good premises, and I flew through them super quick. When I heard that defenseless would feature a hero who was a fighter, I got super excited. Unbreakable had the bad boy I love, and now Defenseless had the fighter I would no doubt fangirl over. And you know what? I totally did. I loved Ryker, and I liked Claire, and I ended up enjoying this entire story.

Claire is a spunky, devoted cheerleader. She wants to win, and she's going to work her little booty off to do it. She's also a pretty good person. Cares about her friends and would do anything for them. And we can also add brave to her list of qualities because she's a flyer and flying can be terrifying, thank you very much. (For real, I used to cheer. This girl flies without a backspot like it's no big deal. Bravery and confidence, right there.) (Also, skill. But that's beside the point.) Overall, I liked Claire. I understood Claire.

Ryker is our fighter guy. Completely misunderstood by his family, thus leaving him with pretty much no family that gives a crap about him. I felt so much for this guy. So kind, and sweet, and caring, yet he made some mistakes and BAM. He's automatically kicked out of the family. Such bull. He was not his mother. He was driven and an honestly great person. I freaking loved him.

The writing was again good and I flew through it super fast. The plot wasn't too surprising, but it got the points across, and I did enjoy it. The resolve at the end seemed a little sudden--a complete flip of where things were going, and I didn't see much build to get to that point, but I was happy with how it turned out. What I liked a lot about this one was that there was still a focus on an important issue--this time it was texting and driving--but the story didn't go out of the way to throw it in your face. It was placed well throughout so we got the point but it also didn't feel forced. The other themes of the novel shone through as well, and I thought it was all great.

The romance made my heart feel a million times happy. I got my fighter in this one, but I was surprised to get more than I bargained for with that smexy pants fighter joining the team. I seriously squealed when the decision was made. Loved it! Ryker and Claire make the cutest couple, and I was rooting for them the whole time. I loved that their romance didn't drive my nerves up the wall, and instead just had me completely on their side. I felt good things.

My only issue on the romance from was the fact that Ryker turned to calling her "Sweet Cheeks" after she insisted he stop calling her "Short Stack." I have no problem with calling her Sweet Cheeks sometimes, but when he was trying to be serious? I couldn't take it seriously. It didn't feel like an endearment to me, it felt like a joke. It was super cute most of the time! But sometimes...I wasn't feeling it. Plus, I thought Short Stack was sweet.

Overall, Defenseless is a great third book to the Diamon Girls series! Just might be my favorite...I'm not sure yet. If this one isn't my favorite, then it's tied with Unbreakable. I enjoyed the story and the characters so much, and I wish there could be more from them! I love Ryker and Claire. Their story was fabulous.

Let me tell you about the great finale for an awesome series. Defenseless was the icing of cake when it comes to the Diamond Girls series. Once again we meet this awesome group of friends, which I love. They are so close and loyal to each other. They are positive, healthy, stay out of trouble and don’t do gossip. Which when it comes to grouping girls is incredible difficult, so I have a lot of respect for these girls.

Sadly, their strengths are yet to be tested, when drama strikes their life. Now they need to overcome their grief together if they want to make to the Cheerleader’s World Championship, especially Claire who is fighting hard to keep it together.

That’s were Ryker Vaughn strikes in. It’s a bit of a cliché how all the Diamond Girls seem to have a knack for nice boys who are posing as bad, but I love that although these boys are troubled and dealing with lots of stuff they are indeed good people. I’m a huge sucker for nice boys and all of these guys (Bodie, Reid and Ryker) treat these girls with nothing but their utmost respect. Which really sets and example with what you should be looking (in my opinion), a guy who treats you nicely.

I loved that each book has their own message, and even if the whole series is tainted by a lot of drama, these girls shine in a way that makes your heart fluffy in the end. This time around it was about texting and driving and its dangers. I also loved that it was also focused on sports. Not also cheerleading competitively but fighting as well. Ryker was a fighter and got into an accident, and I loved how, even if these girls train hard, there was an important issue about caring for your well being more than winning.

Even if at times I wanted to grab Claire and shake her out of her guilt and foolishness for believing she wasn’t allowed to be happy, I felt it was very realistic. I can’t understand all the guilt that well, but I do understand why she felt she should be ashamed to be happy or falling in love due to the situation. I have a feeling I would’ve done something similar if I’d been in her shoes. I love that Claire always speak what’s on her mind and generally she’d be really cool to hang with, so it was a bit sad to see her so down, but it also allowed me to see a new side of her we hadn’t been able to see before.

On the previous book, Unbreakable, I was a bit bothered by how the author kept going on and on about how Nev was so happy know after all the grief she had to endure, referencing what happened in book 1. Well I was extremely thankfully this did not happen here. There are small references here and there about the previous books, which is always nice, but not excessive, so that problem was cleared.

Overall, the Diamond Girls series is an amazing trilogy, with well-rounded characters and great message for teens, especially a great example of friendship and healthy relationships. I am only sorry we never got to learn Erin’s story with Andrew. I feel like she was the only girl missing a story.

I've read all three of the Diamond Girls books. Each book can be read as a stand alone but it would seem a pity to miss the other two. It would be tough to name my favorite. Having said that, I loved the main character's voice in this one.
Claire certainly goes through some extremes of emotion. At one point I was sure she was properly depressed, not just sad and trying to cope with the loss of her friend. I wasn't sure she would be able to pick herself up and get going again. But she had a lot of help, in the unexpected shape of Ryker Vaghn. Ryker is not what meets the eye. He has his own issues to deal with. His family have treated him abysmally and his baggage isn't all his at all.
Then, there is the Diamond Girls, Claire's cheer team. This is a bunch of girls who consider their friends as family. They are tough athletes and work hard without the need to sacrifice every other part of their lives. If I had a daughter, these are the sort of girls I'd love her to be friends with and look up to.
I have to admit that going into reading the first book, Ex-Factor, I was a bit worried I wouldn't be able to keep up with the jargon. Elisa Dane makes it easy. Without going into too much detail, she manages to explain just enough that the reader feels confident navigating the world of competitive cheer.
But these books aren't so much about cheer, so much as cheer is the world they are set in. The girls and guys have so much more going on in their lives, from dealing with the consequences of drunk driving in the first book, domestic abuse in the second, and alcoholism and grief in the third. All the while navigating the eruption of teen hormones and budding romance.
All the books give a sense of achievement and overcoming personal obstacles, but Defenseless, felt a little like an accumulation, like I've been getting to know the characters all along and this is where I was heading with them.
I will be very sorry to say goodbye to this series. I recommend them to anyone who enjoys YA, regardless of age.

One thing I love reading about is Cheerleading, I guess it goes with the I can't do it in real life so I will read about it and that's sort of the same thing philosophy. In Defenseless , we meet Claire Reilly , whose whole life revolves around her friends and her cheerleading squad The Diamond Girls. The book starts with the girls arriving to the gym for practise as they are preparing to enter into the X-Factor Cheer Competition , when they discover that their school gym has been trashed and the main suspect turns out to be Tayla's black sheep of a cousin Ryker Vaughn. Tayla is Claire's best friend. One night the girls are headed to watch the Superbowl and have a fun night out , when Tayla is running late. Claire sends her a text and waits , then tragedy strikes and Claire learns that Tayla was in a car accident. A few days pass and it is the day of the funeral and Claire can't help but believe it is her fault that her best friend is dead - if only she didn't send that text message. At least she has the Cheerleading competition to look forward too , that is until she learns that due to Tayla's death - they will have to pull out as no-one can take her spot. Enter in Ryker, though his whole life has been around MMA , he is fit and is exactly what they need to win. Will Ryker accept the challenge and do it in Tayla's memory ? Will Claire accept this or will this make it harder for her as lately she has been feeling butterflies towards Ryker ?

Defenseless is your average teen romance story with a tragedy and life in the High School lane as well as Cheerleading competitions.

Readers, if you are looking for a Cheer-rific teen novel to read , then reach out those "spirit fingers" and grab a copy of Defenseless by Elisa Dane.

REVIEW
Claire and Rykers story does not begin with anything happy which is what Claire usually is. She is the bouncy happy air of her team and friends. But.
The cheer gym has been horribly vandalized but who would do such a thing?
None other than Tayla's cousin Ryker Vaughn. What will this do to Tayla?
Claire knows Ryker is one tough guy but could he really have done this?

So many things happen in this book Claire faces a horrible loss and how to deal with things.
The girls are getting ready for the Championships but need a replacement who will step in to help?

I enjoyed this book I hate to say even more than the first 2 books in the series but this one grabs your heart and
keeps holding through out the entire book. I loved it..

this book was everything the first book in the series was not, and it's a good thing because it's always better to have a series of books that starts ok and keeps getting better than the other way around and be disappointed.
while for ex-factor I kinda liked it but had a few problems, unbreakable resolved them and defenseless perfected them. in ex-factor I couldn't bring myself to care because some things were unfamiliar to me and I couldn't relate, while for others I was familiar with the situations but in the book they felt too stretched out and fake.
in defenseless it was anything but, the grief the protagonist felt seemed realistic, and I suffered a loss due to a car accident and this time around(unlike in ex-factor) it felt real and more relatable... (and I cried)

an honorable mention to Birdie who is the best character ever and has to become president.

This was a great ending to a great series. I was so excited to finally get Claire's story. Ryker was a great addition to this already amazing group. I wanted to be a part of their group of friends. I loved all the cheer leading aspects included in these books. And I absolutely adored that each book focused on a hard hitting topic. This series is a perfect for those looking to show young girls how to have self confidence. Ryker isn't bad to read about either! This was by far my favorite of the 3 books.

My Thoughts:
(I received this e-book from YA Book Tours. THANKS!)

Ahhh! This book is the sweetest. Really. I thought this book stood out to me (by the way, first e-book from YA Book Tours!!) because of Ryker. And truly, throughout the book Ryker was AMAZEBALLS.

I really thought the whole cheer-leader thing was pretty cool. Stereo-typically, cheer leaders are stuck up snobs, rich and carefree. These girls are apposite. They are fierce,smart,funny,being-hated on, and they sadly know what it's like to hurt.

I love their protective fierceness of the team. When someone says some crap about cheer or about the Diamond Girls, all the girls are there to back each other up. They will get all up in the offenders face. That, was priceless. Cheer was their second home, and the cheer leaders were all sisters. They are a team, and though this fact bordered on cheesy, it still was warm. When one of them is being bullied the other are like, "Hit me baby one more time!"

" And when one of our sisters is hurting, or in pain, we're going to be there for her. No matter what."

Claire is so strong! Physically, she is a shorty. But on the inside, she is booming with pride, love, and confidence. She is soaring, always loving the attention, (she is literally a flier, so she's actually soaring, the one everyone throws into the air) wearing happy colors to fit her happy, supportive mood.

Tayla, is Claire's best friend. She is her twin, her personality fit, her rock. A loving, sweet teddy bear. We'll get back to her.
Ryker, chiseled like Hercules. One thing I really did not like is the description of him. Every other page with him in it, chiseled, chiseled, chiseled. Variety! I need variety! I UNDERSTAND how muscular and handsome he is, I get it that he has rock hard abs, I KNOW. So why keep repeating?

Ryker is really, really a hunk! He is a professional fighter-dude, who everyone thinks as a bad guy. His mom had issues, dad had issues, so his family is thinking, "Hey, since his family is messed up, then he must be too!" So, everyone is mean to him. Makes me want to punch them in the face. When ever Claire is around him, she just loses it. (She is already falling for him, seeing through his bad-boy act)

Tayla (don't worry not a spoiler, happens in the first 20 pages) is on her way to a party. Claire, totally boy-crazy (she's a loner, who can blame her desperateness?) and texts her. Later, they receive a devastating call. Tayla has gotten into a car crash, texting and driving. Oh dear.

I already had an attachment to Tayla. For the first 10 pages, I thought we were together! FOREVER! And because of this accident, the whole book sums up to A.) Claire greaveing B.) Claire working out C.) Claire finding love D.) Claire recovering.

Phase A. Claire is SO depressed. I don't blame her. She thinks this is all her fault, and when her friends try to console her, Claire turns a deaf ear. I just feel so sad for her, and I do hate that inner voice she has, breaking her down. Right as she's about to feel a litte, insy, bitsy bit better her voice goes,
"You don't deserve to be happy, Claire. Your best friend's been in the ground for less than a week and your already out laughing and having a good time? Selfish. Your selfish and uncaring."
AHHHHH. Do you know how much I hate that voice? It is breaking her down, she can't eat, sleep, or
focus. She can't control herself, she is growing sick.

Ryker. I'm going to skip to phase C. (That's her training for cheer) I love Ryker. I added his name to my computer's dictionary, because his name MUST be remembered. Always. Did I mention Ryker is Tayla's cousin? Everyone hated him except Tayla. So, Ryker sort of smashed the cheer gym, because he was furious. Seeing-red-furious. Claire has an attraction to Ryker that she can't stop, and it's becoming clear that he feels the same.

YAY, Ryker is blackmailed to join the cheer team in replacement of Tayla, to fulfill the Diamond Girls dream, Tayla's dream- winning the bid to the Worlds. So, Ryker is a bit stiff at the whole "cheer leader" thing, but the force attracting Claire and Ryker is strong.

I LOVE THEM. Claker. That's their couple name. Claker. YES. So, Ryker is in the line with Roger and Stephen. He is so protective of Claire, and he loves her. He has been neglected and abandoned all his life, and Claire is showing him the love he deserves. I am so glad when Ryker opens up to Claire, abandoning his tough-guy act. He is the sweetest and gentlest to Claire and Birdie.

Birdie is Ryker's landlady. She is the grandmother Ryker never had. She is my favorite character, tough and sweet. She loves to mother people, because her son has already left the nest. She is badass for an old lady! She goes mama bear over Ryker, and Ryker loves her. Anyone messes with Ryker, Birdie gets like this:

Ryker is a fighter, remember? I tough-mean-fierce fighter. He was put out of the ring because of a head injury and everyone wanted him to fight again, rematch the man who put him in the hospital for a week, unconscious. Claire is so worried for him, begging him not to go. I personally was there, begging Ryker not to be a stubbern butt and just go to the cheer competition.

The ending was so nice. SO NICE. I loved it. The epilogue was so sweet. I can't, can't explain. Phase D is the best. I love phase D.

I think this book has a wonderful message. Many messages, in fact.
DON'T TEXT AND DRIVE
DON'T BLAME YOURSELF
SISTER POWER IS THE BEST POWER
Sister power is really awesome in this book, but the whole "Don't text and drive" is really serious. This book showed that. This book has come out! So read it. Please.
Overall, I rate this book 6 stars out of 10 stars!

This author writes page turning stories. And I couldn't put this one down either. If you like your stories on the gritty side, you can't go wrong with any of her books INCLUDING this one.

Psychocat Reads Review of DEFENSELESS by Elisa Dane

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

After reading the first two books in Elisa Dane's Diamond Girls series last year, I couldn't wait to dive into DEFENSELESS. Now it's time to see if it lived up to expectations.

This Book as Part of a Series: Following the trend of the Diamond Girls series, DEFENSELESS mixes YA romance with a solid underlying message. I loved that while the book focused on Claire, a previously secondary character, and a new male character, the primary characters from the prior books were woven tightly into the story. In that way, while DEFENSELESS completely stands on its own and could be read without reading books one and two, if you do read them first you have a connection with the characters already.

The Characters: I recognized Claire's name from the previous book; however, I didn't remember too much about her. Thankfully the author did an excellent job of introducing her to readers in more detail. Claire is sweet, energetic, cares very deeply about those she's close to, and is forced to cope with circumstances that would be challenging for anyone.

Ryker's character is an interesting one from the first moment you meet him under less than ideal circumstances. He's had a troubled past and as the book progresses we find out more and more of whether he's let circumstances bring him down or chosen to make more of his life. I will say, even when he was being less than charming, there was still something that drew me to his character.

The Relationships: DEFENSELESS manages to explore teen romance, friendship, family ties, and friendships so close they might as well be family. One of my favorite parts of this book, along with the rest of the series, is the bond between the Diamond Girls.

Too Perfect of Perfectly Flawed: Given the topics that Elisa Dane weaves into her books, it is hard to imagine one of them ever falling onto the too perfect side of the fence. This books manages to put Claire and Ryker through all kinds of hell, leaving them fighting their way through to figure out how to create some sense of happiness. Their journeys are both heart breaking and beautiful to read.

Jen's Final Rating: 5 STARS! Another win from Elisa Dane. DEFENSELESS mixes YA romance with a hard hitting message built around characters you can't help but fall in love with. I highly recommend reading this book as well as the prior two books in the series.

Psychocat's Final Rating: Psychocat has her eyes set on Ryker, though her claws seemed to be aimed toward an entirely different character. At least this time her interest in the book wasn't just around drawing blood.

This was definitely not the best trilogy I've ever read, but it was entertaining enough I suppose.
However, this was definitely my least favorite of the series for a few reasons:

~SPOILERS~

1. It was IMPOSSIBLE to connect with Claire. I felt like I knew nothing about her, other than her obsession with Ryker and the guilt she felt over Tayla's death.

2. Everything that Ryker and Claire said to each other felt contrived and super cheesy. I rolled my eyes on more than one occasion. This goes for the other two books of the series, as well.

3. Tayla's death was a cop-out and I'm not even sure why Dane chose to do this, since it ended up making Claire even less likable.

Overall, I wouldn't exactly recommend this book to anyone, especially if you liked the first two books. This one was a pretty big disappointment.

Felt a bit rushed at times

I enjoyed this story but everything in it went a bit too fast. The romance really could have used more build up and also how it all played out. Several important issues were brought to light as usual and I feel I would have wanted more time to connect. I have enjoyed this series and if there are mire Diamond girls I will probably read their story too.

I was so disappointed in this book... I didn't love it like the first 2 books in this trilogy...I found the writing in this book annoying and could tell it was a adult writing as a teenager and trying way to hard. This book just didn't have the same feel as the first 2 and I really didn't like or connect with the characters in this book.

This book was my favorite out of the Diamond Girl series!!! Claire and Ryker have an AMAZING connection. The storyline broke my heart. So Sad!! I'm an All Star cheerleader, and I thought the scenes in the gym/competition were believable. Great story!

I thought this was a great addition to the series. I said I wanted more cheer related text and that's what I got.
A great, fun contemporary with a meaningful message.
