I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Eden and Alec have never responded well to each other and now that Eden's sister is married to Alec's cousin, they are going to be seeing each other even more. However, all the friction that is crackling around them is slowly starting to heat up. When Eden is caught in a compromising position, it is decided that Eden and her mother will travel to Scotland with Alec as he goes home for the first time in ten years. With a childhood betrothal hanging over his head and guilt over the circumstances of his birth that have him as the heir to the earldom, Alec is dreading going home. He secretly hopes Eden's presence will get him out of his old betrothal but little does he know, he is about to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire.
If you have been reading along with this series, you know all about the men it has followed and their infamous fathers. All the heroes were born on the wrong side of the blanket but lucky enough to have the blankets belong to royal princes. The "cousins" all know about each other and served in the war together as spies. This overarching storyline is attention inducing and in the first book I thought the darker tone such a birth and livelihood would produce was felt. Each successive book I felt has been getting lighter in tone and with this fourth addition, I found myself wanting to describe it as "cute". It's lighter in tone with the playfulness between our leads shown through the hero’s willingness to tweak our heroine’s nose and her ability to always rise to the occasion.
This would work as a standalone, you would miss a few snappy moments between Eden and Alec that occur in the previous book but the meat of their relationship really starts here. I really enjoyed how our leads played off of one another, Alec volleys and Eden readily picks up the racket; they are evenly matched. This made for a fun and spirited couple to read about. Eden was a little unsteady as a character with her confidence and then sudden lack of self-esteem making her actions feel forced sometimes. I get that she feels more for Alec but she would flirt with him and then turn around and be too shy at other times. I also felt like her mother had to drive her towards making a claim on Alec so much that she ended up seeming like a wet noodle. Speaking of wet noodles, Alec is going to drive you crazy during a lot of this story. He's great with Eden being his devilish little self but when it came to taking a stand against his family members over the betrothal, his assertive personality vanished. You'll want to shake him and say "Just tell them no!" but I can see how as this is a historical with historical problems and how family obligations were trickier, dealing not just with emotional manipulation but reputations and legalities, he was in a tight spot.
The secondary characters consisting of Alec's family were molds of the gruff but caring grandfather, scholar father, desperately grasping Aunt, stoic fiancée, and decoy cousin. The villain is obvious and the whole betrothal story that was the main plot device to create havoc for our couple was pretty weak and stretched on for way too long. Eden’s mother stole the thunder for me a lot as she was the one to get things done, laying the law down to get Alec and Eden together, and her repertoire with her “humorless” maid was priceless. In the previous book I thought the emotional execution was weak and the plot stronger, I find the opposite to be true here. I liked Alec and Eden's interactions, when they were allowed to have them, and found the plot very weak; not much happens in a very, stretched out way.
As I said, I found this to be a cute story, Alec and Eden's playful poking at one another will bring a smile to your face, just skip the unnecessary betrothal drama.
This review was originally posted on (un)Conventional Bookviews How to Marry a Royal Highlander is exactly the kind of historical romance I enjoy the most. Stubborn ladies and hot highland lords - what's not to love? My How to Marry a Royal Highlander review: It's not often I read a Historical Romance that is also a Romantic Suspense! How to Marry a Royal Highlander is both, though, and I know that is part of why I enjoyed Edie's and Alec's story so much. Add to that that Edie had been in a scandal, and she had to leave London for the rest of the season, to stay away at least for the whole winter. Alec, with help of Edie's twin sister Evie's husband Wolf managed to persuade a very involved mother that the Scottish Highlands was the best place to go to make the ton forget all about Edie and her possible indiscretions.
I'm pretty sure I had already fallen in love with both Edie and Alec in How to Plan a Wedding for a Royal Spy, and getting to know both of them better cemented my feelings for them. Seeing them get to know each other, and first become aware of their own feelings towards each other - then realizing all that was at stake for them to be able to be together was a delight. But it was definitely not an easy path for either of them, especially because several people did not at all want Alec to come home and take his rightful place as the laird. Not only was the romance titillating, the characters grew in a way I hadn't suspected, and while I liked both of them at the beginning of the story, I absolutely loved them by the end.
Because of the suspense elements, there was never a dull moment, and added to that was the fact that Alec had been promised to his cousin, Donella, since he was 16 - at what time he ran away from home to see the world, and not be forced into a loveless marriage. Needless to say, his family wasn't exactly happy to see him arrive home after ten years, with an English lady and her mother in tow. This brought on several laugh out loud moments, as well as some very well done tension that made How to Marry a Royal Highlander impossible to put down.
Written in third person point of view, and in past tense, the story unfolded at a nice, even pace, with some scenes paced faster, to make the excitement more palpable. I think both historical romance fans and romance suspense fans will enjoy this installment, which can be read as a stand-alone. Some of my favorite How to Marry a Royal Highlander quotes: "Now, what was that ye were sayin' about my beloved homeland, lassie?" he asked as he stood next to Wolf. "Surely ye can't be thinkin' it's anything but heaven on earth." "Oh, God," she muttered. "Please, not the brogue." He simply laughed.
The man was ridiculously handsome - and nice when he wished to be. It made Edie feel rather gloomy, probably because she was used to men like him falling at her feet. So far, however, Gilbride seemed entirely immune to her charms.
"Ah, lassie, you can't fool me," he said, that seductive Scottish burr roughening his voice. It dragged across her nerves, making her shiver. "I'm not one of those manmilliners you lead around by the nose like docile geldings. I know very well you've been avoiding me."
How To Marry A Royal Highlander is the last of the series ( I believe) and I have only read one other book from this author, and adored it, so I was really excited to get a chance to read this. There were a couple of aspects that drew me to this story, the first was that it was a Highlander romance, and ‘duh’ I will read anything to do with those sexy highlanders. They make some of the best heroes I have ever had a chance to read. Another aspect that this series has made an impact on me. I love the theme of it, and I liked that Alasdair and Eden together. They are quite the perfect match for each other. They each have similar sense of humor and the way they banter and tease each other, is so alike to one another, and you see how well the compliment each other in ways that are very unique to both of these characters. Now Alasdair’s family were one piece of work to be honest, I had many issues with them. And none of them I really ever liked except for his one cousin, I won’t reveal much about her, only that she plays a big role in the story and even from the beginning I enjoyed her character and seeing how she is with Alasdair and her treatment of Eden which is much better than the rest of her family. Now Eden’s parents are both wonderful, and I will be honest at first I hated her mother, she felt so self-righteous at times. But boy I guarantee you all, that you will be charmed by her. She has spunk and quite a bit of attitude and when her daughter is threatened….WHEW watch out boys and girls because she is like a big mama bear. I liked how these two come together, and even though it didn’t end like I would have expected, I did enjoy seeing these two find their HEA. One other quality of the story I want to mention is the “villain” Now there is one and it’s a villain you won’t see coming, I was bowled over by who actually is the person trying to destroy Eden and Alasdair, the way the story is written, the person implied is not who is actually out to kill them, and I loved the way the Kelly shocked me in this story. Made for a fully satisfying read.
I haven't read a book by this Vanessa Kelly since The Stantons Series in 2009 with her debut Mastering The Marquess (Stantons Series) book 1 and Book 2 Sex and the Single Earl in 2010 of the same series. I absolutely loved both of these book and now I see I need to go through her back list and catch up on the wonderful Renegade Royals series! How to to Tempt A Royal Highlander is actually book 4 in The Renegade Royals series but you can read as a stand alone as I had no problem with since this is the first book I have read in this series. I do plan on read the first three as this book was absolutely wonderful.
London November 1815 It is about the heroine is Eden ( Edie) Whitney who is caught in a scandal kissing Sir Malcolm Bannister a rake of the worst kind and in a secluded hallway. To make matters worse the one who catches her is non other then Lady Morgan, the biggest gossip in all of London. As if matter could even get worst society decides to to snub her well that's the ton! Eden is depressed enough feeling an emptiness since her twin sister was swept off her feet and married to Wolf Endicott of course she is happy as her sister had been in love with Wolf forever. It os just she is not there for her as she had been her entire life. Now to make matters worse her Mama want Edie away from London to the Scottish Highland for the Winter to give time for the gossip to calm down.
Alastair ( Alec) Gilbride has been avoiding his responsibilities for a decade and decides to face them and go home to Scotland he is heir to Scottish earldom and has not been home in ten years escaping an arranged marriage . He is also a spy to the crown so things get extremely interesting in this story. Alec also decides Edie would make an excellent choice as a bride if only he could make her see his view of things.
What a a fast page turner read this is a single sitting as it was one of those I can't put down books and so beautifully written. Plus I really love a the humor Evie's mother supplied this book. This was a joy to read and I look forward to more books by this Ms. Kelly. I highly recommend the exceptional How to Tempt a Royal Highlander by Vanessa Kelly it was a fun face paced book that I think any reader of historical romance will be delighted to read. I loved it!
****Disclaimer....I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
I had a chance to read this pre-release through Netgalley. I enjoyed Eden's journey from London where her curiosity got her into a lot of trouble with the ton to the Highlands of Scotland where she dealt with mistrust and hatred. Along the way, she falls in love with the big, lovable Alec who is heading home after being a spy in the war to take his rightful place beside his grandfather as head of the clan. Their love struggles through attempted murder, scandal, and honoring debts. Both Alec and Edie take their time realizing their love and admitting such to the other. The fire between them keeps drawing them together even before words are spoken. This is a highly recommended read.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
Oh how I love Highlanders....sometimes I really think I was born in the wrong era.
Eden Whitney, aka Edie, has done it now. She was at a Ball and got caught in an unfortunate moment. Maybe it wouldn't of been so bad if she had enjoyed the kiss but another couple of seconds she would have bashed the fool. Now, she has caused a scandal and of course some like to really rub it in.
At a family meeting, her mother was trying to figure out what to do about the situation. Her brother-in-law Wolf comes up with the solution to have Edie and her mother go to Scotland with his good friend Alec for the winter.
Alec has been away from home for 10 years. He has fought in wars, worked in foreign countries and been a spy. His father has visited and told him it is time for him to return home and fulfill his role as Master of Riddick. His grandfather is getting on in years and isn't well. He doesn't want to go home. The reason? His grandfather betrothed him to his cousin Donella and he doesn't want to marry her, he never did.
He wants Edie. She captured his attention from the moment he met her. She is beautiful, smart and sassy. So, he isn't all that upset when Wolf makes the suggestion. He now has several weeks to work on her and see if here feeling are anything like his are.
Edie finds Alec attractive but they always seem to be at odds with one another. All the women like him and their mommas love him and his money! She just doesn't know if this trip is the answer.
I did enjoy this book. I think Edie was at odds with Alec so much because of her attraction to him. She didn't know if the trip to Scotland was a good idea but she didn't have a choice in the matter. Her twin Evie was a bit more subdued (just a bit) that Edie. They are identical twins and are very close. Her recent marriage and her moving to her own home has shaken up Edie, as I am sure it affected Evie too.
Lady Reese, her mother was a piece of work. She was a typical snobbish aristocrat in her complaints but in the end she was a real surprise and we got to know the real woman and mother.
Then of course we have the family of Alec. His Grandfather is blustery and opinionated. He was very upset when Alec left as he loved him. Alec's father is a scholarly man, basically a good man. He loved Alec's mother deeply.
His cousin Fergus is the Steward and caretaker of the Castle and land. He is very upset that Alec ran out on his sister. Aunt Glennie, Fergus and Donella's mother is dramatic and a witch. We all know about the history between Scotland and England but she was brutal to Edie and her mother. Donella, the bride to be, is a lovely young woman, She is more quiet and serene. She is the only of her family to show Edie and her mother any kind of respect,
I think the characters are very well defined. The writing is very good because I could get a visual in my mind of almost everything I read. I would recommend this book, it is a great read.
I really enjoyed the latest treasure written by a most talented author. Ms Kelly has out done herself with this spectacular book. The characters were engaging and real. Lots of drama going on with the hero who really doesn't want to be. Alasdair Gilbride is handsome, brawny, and so likeable. He has been a spy for the crown and has at last come back to London to see what's up. He takes the advice of his closest friend and decides to go home to Scotland. He has responsibilities at home with him being the heir to the Scottish earldom. He really isn't into going, but with his oh so attractive traveling companion, Alasdair doesn't complain. Eden Whitney, along with her mother, travel with Alasdair to his home. Eden's escapades have banished her from London to begin her rusticating from all the temptations that surround her. Even though Eden will miss her life there, she hopes that Alasdair's family won't be angry at him for inviting her. Alasdair can be a troublesome man who gets on her nerves, but she won't hold back her voice when certain people try to dictate to her. But along the way things change between them with lots of kisses turn into sensual abandon that leaves both of them breathless. Oh, this book was so good that I didn't want it to end. Love those highlanders! Thank you Net Galley for this great read. I appreciate them for this ARC title in which I gave an honest review.

"How To Marry a Royal Highlander" by Vanessa Kelly
What I liked about this novel..
I loved this historical romance story of Alec[Alasdair Gilbride] and Edie[Eden Whitney]. I will say I laughed so hard at some of the bantering that went on in this novel with Alec and Edie but also especially that of Edie's mom. I was able to catch some of Edie's feeling for Alec quite early in the read, but was quite surprise at a lots of the twist, turns and drama in this read that was so very interestingly presented by this author. The characters were all off the chart well done...being well developed, defined, portrayed, engaging and so very believable. I also liked the way this author was able to give the reader one hot steamy highlander romance story as the heroine and hero are brought together in their lively interaction throughout the read. Who knew that a horrible kiss and being snubbed by the ton would cause such a uproar that would force Edie to have to leave London for the Highlands. And that there would be plans by Edie's mom to start some match making for Edie. I found this read not only fascinating and entertaining with a good depth, a great plot but also a well paced read that will definitely keep your attention all the way till the end.
We have Eden who at times, has the tendency to get into trouble because of her adventurous spirit. But this one last such "adventure" was just a little over the top for her Mother, Lady Reese and the ton. Eden's Mom decides a break away is just what is needed to calm all the gossip.
Alasdair, a spy for the crown and friend with Eden's brother hasn't been home to Scotland for ten years because of some family drama. He's handsome, wealthy, an Earl and a great hero. Alasdair takes his friends advise and decides it's time to go home and face the family and drama.
Lady Reese has decided that Alasdair is a perfect match for her daughter and thinks that Scotland is just the perfect place for Eden's "vacation away".
Alasdair and Eden, wow sparks fly between these two and the dialogue is wonderful engaging. I really liked how these two communicated and had such an adult and honest relationship. I enjoyed both characters and how their relationship developed and progressed.
Very well written and well paced romance. I enjoyed all the characters and how well developed they all where. This was a very enjoyable read and had me hooked from the first few pages.
What a fun story, I loved it. Edie, the more out going of the Whitney twins, has been caught kissing a complete rake by one of the biggest gossips who of cause has told everyone, which resulted Edie being snubbed and she just had to make it worse for herself by causing a scene. Her mother then decides the only thing to do is leave to London for the winter to let the gossip settle down and a trip the Highlands with her brother-in-laws friend Alec is just the ticket, also he might make a good match for Edie. Alec is pleased to escort Edie to his home in the Highlands, even if it is a little cold and drafty in the winter. He was on his way home anyway as he has a little problem he has been putting off for quite a while now and also he's decided Edie would make him a wonderful companion and wife, he just has to convince her. This a very entertaining story. The characters were fun, the bantering between Alec and Edie was great. The story was an amazingly fast read for me, I couldn't put it down, and one of my favourite characters had to be Edie's mom, she just got funnier as book progressed. A great addition to the series. I highly recommend it!
How have I not read anything by Vanessa Kelly before? I know she's on my tbr. I may even already own some of her books. Well, I'll definitely be digging them our cause I loved this book!
The banter between Alec and Edie was great! Alec was suave and charming and Edie would get him so twisted cause he had feelings for her. It was refreshing to see the hero get tongue tied and say the wrong thing. Edie's mom was a great secondary character. She put a smile on my face :)
I read and enjoyed Evelyn and Wolf's book, though it's not necessary to understand this story. Eden and Evelyn are twins. Eden and Alec are fun with their constant bickering and barely concealed attraction. Eden gets herself caught up in a scandal and is banished for the winter to ride it out. She ends up going to the Highlands with Alec. He hasn't been back in ten years and for good reason. Eden ends up in the middle of Alec's family drama. It was a fun read. I recommend for any historical romance lover.
I get so excited when beginning to read a Vanessa Kelly book for good reason. She never lets me down. This book is no different. Everything about it is great. The characters are perfect, the romance is amazing, and the setting is to die for. Keep it up.
3.5 This was really cute. Alec and Edie were a hoot and their banter lightened up the book. Special mention to Edie's mother, her antics and comments made me laugh out loud. She was haughty but really loving and loyal it was great.
We first meet Eden Whitney How to Plan a Wedding for a Royal Spy. Let me tell you that I actually liked Eden more than her sister Evelyn. Yes, I know that they are twins, but Edie just seem to have more outgoing personality. Kind of larger than life, while Evie was a little more down to earth and kept Edie grounded. Now we have Edie trying to make it on her own without her sister being constantly near by. We actually come to find out that more about Edie and Evie from this one quote: People believed that Edie was the strong and fearless twin, ready to challenge the world but she knew better. Evelyn had true courage--inner steel that enabled her to stand for things that really counted. Actually, Edie drew strength from Evie, especially when there mother would pick on Evie, and you watch Edie challenge her mother. So, you get a better understanding of the dynamics of the twins when you combine How to Plan a Wedding for a Royal Spy and How To Marry a Royal Highlander.
Anyway, Edie does something stupid like get caught in a compromising position (caught kissing) with Sir Malcolm and basically he flees the scene and her reputation is in ruins. However, she believes her popularity, attitude, and family can protect her from a tatters reputation. Yet, she comes to find out that it can't and now she needs to rusticate from the public eye. The originally plan was Yorkshire, but Wolf comes up with a better plan to have her go to Scotland with Alec. Sounds like a marvelous plan, NOT. If you had read How to Plan a Wedding for a Royal Spy you would remember that these two were at each other throats ready to kill one another. Like I have said in the past two things with this kind of intensity 1) They are going to kill one another or 2) Fall in love. Bound to happen, and I think Wolf sees that too.
I like the journey to Scotland, because we have these two cooped up in a carriage with her mother. Her mother is definitely full of surprises. She would be a a favorite character, because of how critical she was to Evie. However, we get to see her in a different light and we get to know her a little better. I actually grew found of her, which surprises me. She's very protective of her daughters once she lets her dragon ways down. Okay, enough of Edie's mother. Why I liked this part, because get Alec's bombshell. As these two draw closer together he has to reveal that he's betrothed to another. WHAT! That bastard! I know, he's just a flirt, a rake, well you get the point. Of course this throws Edie for a loop, because she was feeling like Alec could be the one. I just adore how Alec just stumble on his words around Edie. Most of the time he just shoves his foot in his mouth.
Honestly, I enjoyed this How to Marry a Royal Highlander more than How to Plan a Wedding for a Royal Spy, because the interaction between Edie and Alec is absolutely fun. They have such witty banter between the two of them and they worked well together. Once they get to Scotland it's like hell breaks all loose. Seriously, Alec's family makes my family look sane. No joke. That is whole another can of worms that I'm just going to leave alone. Crazy doesn't begin to describe them. As a whole the story is pretty awesome. I was highly entertained from banter and the shenanigans that happen in Scotland. So, if you are looking for Highland adventure with some family drama, you might consider checking out How To Marry a Royal Highlander.
It's hard to believe that How to Marry a Royal Highlander is book four (and two novellas) in Vanessa Kelly's Renegade Royals Series but amazingly enough it is.
We have wandered through three of their lives and watched them find love and now it's time for Alasdair Gilbride's story. A man who was fortunate to have a real father love and raise him and to be the heir to the Scottish Earldom. He's done his duty, he's served the crown and now it's time to return home. To the grandfather he adored, the father he loved and respected and to the betrothed he never wanted. He was so against the betrothal that he ran away at 16 and went to war, among other things Now it's time to face the piper.. only now it's a 100 times worse because he not only doesn't want his betrothed he does want his best friend (and cousin's) sister in law..
Eden Whitney, the favored twin, the adored twin, the twin who could do no wrong totally blew it.. One little escapade too many and suddenly she is persona non gratis. Not wanted, scandalous with no friends. She is being forced to head for Scotland and lay low for a while. Only her mother has plans to match make her with the sexy heir who is giving them a place to hide. Except of course Eden doesn't want to go to Scotland, it's barbarous, and away from society and of course the one man she wants but can't control is going to be her host. She doesn't want to fall for him but what's a girl to do?
Now they only have to figure out how he can ever get out of his betrothal, appease his family and be together.
Oh yes, another hit by Ms. Kelly! I enjoy this series immensely, partially because she dared to deal with a subject that is usually ignored. Yes every man over the age of 10 it seems slept around but no one ever really addresses the consequences. At least not from the consequences point of view. These are living breathing men and I am sure women who have to suffer for their parents actions and Ms Kelly makes them real. She makes them heroes, individuals to be admired.
In Highlander, she also deals with family dynamics from the other side of the family. Where power and greed and maybe just a wee bit of insanity are gaining control and two people who might find happiness are being kept apart.
She's just awesome and each book is a treat, Highlander offers us yet another chance to enjoy her wit and style, her dynamics and destines of those who some might not consider important.
My opinion? Check it out.. another excellent story

This review is based on the ARC of How to Marry a Royal Highlander, provided by netgalley and is scheduled to be released on June 30, 2015.
Miss Eden Whitney is vivacious, confident, and able to charm even the sourest of elderly matrons. She never lacks for a dance partner and can often be found in the midst of a circle of young men at parties, all of whom clamor for her attentions. Until one scandal too many results in Edie forced to spend the rest of the season “rusticating” in Scotland with her brother-in-law’s friend, Alasdair Gilbride. Alec is a charming rake who enjoys pushing all of Edie’s buttons and seeing her face light up with frustration and delight at their shared verbal banter. The pair quickly realize they’ve been in love with each other for some time, but matters turn complicated when Alec reveals he’s technically been engaged for the past ten years! To add fuel to the fire, when Edie and Alec reach the highlands, they must not only face Alec’s formidable family, but also the realization that someone is trying to kill them.
There are quite a few fantastic one-liners interspersed throughout and many parts had me quite literally laughing out loud as I read. Edie and Alec match each other not only in passion and devotion, but also in their quick wit and repartee. The plot was a little slow, but I really didn’t mind since this allowed the novel to focus more on Edie and Alec’s growing relationship and their individual emotions rather than a constant reaction to outside events. However, with the exception of Edie’s mother, I thought some of the secondary characters were a little flat until right towards the end. (I’m thinking specifically of Donatella, Fergus, and their mother.) But putting that aside, I though the writing in this novel is absolutely superb! Descriptions are vivid, the romantic plot engaging, and the emotions Ms. Kelly evokes are done so effortlessly.
This novel is part of a series. While you don’t need to have read the other novels in the series to enjoy this one, I do think reading at least Eden’s sister’s novel, HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING FOR A ROYAL SPY, would be helpful as HOW TO MARRY A ROYAL HIGHLANDER makes several references to the previous book that might be more fully enjoyed and understood if you’ve read the prior novel.

“How to marry a Royal Highlander” by Vanessa Kelly is the 4th installment in “The Renegade Royals” series. I haven’t read the other books but it’s no real problem to deal with the story.
Alasdair Gilbride fled from his family, from Scotland because of an arranged betrothal to a girl his grandfather thinks to be the perfect wife. But Alasdair doesn’t want to get married, especially to her. This was more than 10 years ago and since this moment he wasn’t back in the north for a single day.
Eden Whitney likes to get into troubles and it didn’t happen the first time but this time things went too far. She kissed a rouge on a ball, they were seen and he didn’t ask for her hand. There aren’t many things a young woman can do. Her parents only see one solution – send her to the north, with her mother, to Alasdair’s family’s estate.
Alasdair hopes that her presence will ease things up north but he knows Eden quite well and knows that she’s strong minded and always gets into troubles. Together the three of them travel north, of course not without complications.
There is something I loved about this story without knowing the other parts in this series – Eden is pretty blind without glasses. Her twin sister always wears them and isn’t a bluestocking at all but their mother doesn’t want Eden to wear them. When she sneaks into Alasdair’s house, she’s dressed as her sister with the glasses but because of her body curves he knows instantly that it’s Eden – I loved this scene - and the first thing he gets her in the North are glasses because he doesn’t want her on a/his horse, if she cannot see more than 3 feet in front of her.
Even having a busy time right now with work and so, I went through this book rather quickly and I loved it, I absolutely loved it. Of course thing get complicated in the North and there is one or the other intrigue and family quarrels. But that makes the book so lovely.
Rating: 4****
PS. The cover is much too trashy in my opinion. So 1990s like.
Ahhhh....YES. How to Marry a Royal Highlander was exactly the book I was looking for! It was:
Lovely (and lively): I knew I was in for a good time from the moment both Edie and Alec interacted. They had chemistry, wicked good banter, and I absolutely adored them together.
Original: The Renegade Royals series has such a great premise: each book hero is the illegitimate offspring of English royalty. In this case, Alec is the illegitimate son of the Duke of Kent. I found this twist to be fascinating and dangerous to those involved, which always makes for good reading.
Verra Scottish: I love Scotland, but have found that many books set there leave me disappointed (blame it on the high standard set by Outlander). So not the case with this book! From alluding of the relations between English and Scottish, to the setting, castle, brogue and kilt, I feel that Kelly used this wonderful land to her advantage.
Endearing: Everything about How to Marry was endearing. I love how Alec was halfway in love with Edie from the beginning. I loved that Alec insisted Edie wear glasses, though she's insistent they'll make her seem frumpy. I loved that the two managed to find a way together despite everything standing in their way. I even loved Edie's badass Mamma. Loved it all.
I'm do glad How to Marry a Royal Highlander came my way. It didn't even matter that it was the last in the series; that only made me want to read the entire series, pronto. If you're looking for absolutely entertaining, steamy and sweet Historical Romance, give it a go.
HOW TO MARRY A ROYAL HIGHLANDER by Vanessa Kelly latest Regency Historical Romance. #4 in and the final installment in "The Renegade Royals" series, but can be read as a stand alone. Although, I would highly recommend reading this wickedly delicious series.
This is Alasdair Gilbride, an Illegitimate (Royal) Scottish Earl and ex- spy and Eden Whitney, a scandalous debutante, and this twin sister of Evie, from a previous book. Now she has scandalized the ton one time to many, and is sent to Scotland to rusticate. Of course, she is sent with the but charming exasperating Alasdair aka Alex.
"How to Marry a Royal Highlander" is a charming, cute, tale where the H/H enjoy a bit of witty, sarcastic banter, find themselves attracted to each other, try to solve a problem of Alex's fiance(whom he did not agree to marry), and a find themselves in a bit of danger. The secondary characters are charming albeit a bit rough around the edges, and I must say rather rude. But a necessary evil to the story. Alex did not ask or want to be put into the position he was placed in with his betrothal when he was sixteen, nor does he wish this complication in his life. As a spy, he was dangerous, but doesn't seem to be so in this story.
Fast paced and filled with passion, danger, family, the quirks of clan life in the Highlands, suspense, and of course romance. I absolutely love Alex and Edie, they are realistic, engaging and endearing. The storyline was unique, although, not as traumatic or as much danger, as the others in this series. I absolutely love Ms. Kelly's Scottish stories, and would highly recommend this one. This was a fun story! I thoroughly enjoyed "How to Marry a Royal Highlander"! Fans of Scottish Historical Romance with a touch of humor, danger, a bit of suspense and lots of witty banter will enjoy this engaging, enticing tale of finding true love and romance. A must read! Another hit for Ms. Kelly!

This is the first book iv read by Vanessa Kelly and for sure now it will not be the last. I love historical romances they make me travel back in time to view others love from a different era.
Alasdair Gilbride, is heir to a Scottish earldom at sixteen he ran away from his beloved home in the Highlands to London when he found out some news that he did not like at all, it filled him with horror, he was engaged to his younger cousin and would be married of at eighteen. so Alasdair had no choice at all to live with but his wits. Know Ten years has gone by and he has to return to his home once again to face his grandfather and his responsibilities.
Eden Whitney has found herself in a heap of trouble snubbed by the ton after a minor discretion. She finds herself of to the Highlands till the gossip calms down, she is escorted by her mother and travelling with Alasdair as well Edie is not happy, but has to make the best of it after all its only for a few weeks.
But what Edie doesnt no is Alasdair has feelings for her deep ones. he ends up using Edie to try to break off his engagement which Edie is not happy about at all.
Just as things are going well they get caught up in an affair, Edie soon finds herself falling in love with her Scottish oaf. Can they manage to admit their feelings for each other? or will someone else get in their way?
What a fantastic read, this book is well paced and very easy to read and follow. the characters are very well written and each took a spot in my heart. I adored Edie and her spunky ways she is so lively and bright a great heroine for this book.
What a soft spot i have for Alasdair swoon, he is so gallant and debonair no wonder so many ladies had fallen for him, but he only has eyes for Edie.
I also very much enjoyed Edie mother she was so formidable :)
what more do you need but a scandal a great romance with some thrills along the way.
I loved this book! Vanessa Kelly has quickly become one of my favorite authors. The plot was interesting, the love scenes were hot, and the side characters were as much fun to read about as the main characters. This book was also humorous and I found myself smiling often and chuckling while reading. Edie got caught kissing a totally unsuitable man, and was disappointed that the kiss was terrible. Her mother decided that she needed to get out of London for the winter and let the ton forget the gossip. She isn’t too happy about that, but when her brother in law suggests she go to Scotland with Alec for the winter Edie’s mother agrees. It seems that Edie’s mother has decided that Alec would make her a wonderful son in law. Alec is only too happy to escort Edie to his cold drafty castle in the highlands for the winter. He had already decided that Edie would make him a wonderful wife. Alec is hoping that Edie’s presence in his grandfather’s castle will help him with an unfortunate domestic situation that he has found himself stuck in. Edie and Alec were great fun to read about. They didn’t seem to like each other very much at the beginning of the book, but when Alec stood by Edie’s side when she was the subject of gossip at a ball Edie began to change her mind. Edie calls Alec the funniest names and it is sweet to see a man who is a former spy get tangled up in how much he cares for his love. This book comes highly recommended.

This entire series has honestly been one of the best I have ever read. I have loved every single installment and I am sad that the series is over.
Alec and Eden aka Edie are great leads. I loved the banter between them and the chemistry was undeniable.
Edie has caused a scandal and her parents want to send her to Yorkshire to wait out the scandal. Edie's sister Evelyn's new husband Will has a better idea. Go to Scotland with his best friend Alec. Alec thinks this is a great idea because one he wants Edie and two because he has a plan to use her to help him with a problem he has - a betrothal that his family entered him into against his wishes years ago and the reason he left. He is hoping to break the betrothal and win Edie. As they say the best laid plans...
This book has it all - villains, humor, heartache, steamy love scenes, life or death moments and true love.
I really enjoyed this book - as with the other books in the series - it is well written and the plot flows perfectly. I would highly recommend this book and the entire series.
My only complaint would be that even though there is an epilogue - I wish it had encompassed all the characters and had been set a few years later. But that is just a personal wish because I am not ready to let these characters go :)
Part of the Renegade Royals series, this fourth main entry blends Regency with the Highlands! Two of my favorites together! The premise to the novels in the series is that each of the royal princes has had a child “born on the wrong side of the sheets.” In How to Marry a Royal Highlander, Alasdair Gilbride has been honorably relieved of his duties to spy for crown and country now that the war with Napoleon has ended. It’s time to head back to the Highlands to deal with a betrothal he never wished for. In London, his best friend William “Wolf” Endicott has a small favor to ask of him, escort his sister-in-law, the Lady Eden Whitney to Alasdair’s Highland estate to let a small indiscretion blow over for the winter. Too bad Alasdair and Edie can’t stand each other, or can they?
This was a really fun read although I was at first a bit annoyed with Eden’s character. She came off as spoiled and unconcerned about anyone around her. The story developed and so did her character. Both hero and heroine were very engaging, there were sparks and humorous dialog to spare, and some great side characters. I loved the look into Scottish history (land clearances) and clan relationships. Very good reading.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
To be honest, this was a DNF for me. I hate that I couldn't get through it but I just couldn't. I realize that this is the fourth book in the series but I recently read the ninth book of a series and had no trouble keeping up. I feel like I missed Alec and Edie's entire love story, like it played out in the previous book. They kept talking about how much they hated each other but I don't remember reading about that or the turning point where they decided maybe the other isn't so bad. I also don't feel like I got a real sense of what either character was like and I'm guessing it's because that was in the third book too. It would be different if that were the only problem, though. I thought it was ridiculous that Edie would insist on going to a ball after being caught in a compromising position just to find out if she had any supporters left (she didn't, of course) rather than running away in the first place. The final straw for me was that one of the big "conflicts" was neatly taken care of after only a chapter or two and I just can't imagine what else could possibly happen in the book. It's probably a great book if you've read the other three but it definitely wasn't for me.
I recommend How To Marry a Royal Highlander to anyone who loves historical romance.
Eden Whitney was on the tip of scandal and her mother decides she needs to leave London until things smooth over. Their decision of locations ends up being a trip to Scotland with her friend, Captain Alastair Gilbridge.
Alastair left Scotland ten years prior when his family arranged a marriage he did not want. Allowing Eden to accompany him home provides him a two-fold solution to his problem. He wants to use Eden to make his betrothed break the engagement, and he wants Eden for himself. She and her mother are not well-received as Highlanders have a long memory, not forgiving the English. Pushed to marry his betrothed and avoiding someone who wants him dead doesn't stop his pursuit of Eden.
Alastair is a hero you will fall in love with. The emotions of all characters will have your heart switching from heavy to light throughout the novel. You will want the characters to get together but, like them, you will not see a way out of the arranged marriage. That will keep you engrossed in finding out what will happen next.
I was provided this novel on NetGalley for an honest review. Honestly, if you haven't read Vanessa Kelly, this is a great novel to begin with.
Alec is a jealous sort, "the notion of Edie in another man’s arms made him want to commit several acts of mayhem. “Did he hurt you?” he growled." He likes to point out things to his woman, "you seemed to care a great deal the other night, when you called me a great Scottish oaf and stomped away from me. And you’ve barely uttered two words to me since." He's not shy, nope not at all, "she crossed her arms over her chest. “Of course I’m not! But in your case, one could hardly fail to miss it . . . that.” Her words, coupled with her reluctantly fascinated gaze, had the predictable effect. Repressing a sigh, he turned his back to her and adjusted himself." He's quite the suave man, "mm, you on the floor isn’t such a bad thought,” he said, ignoring her objection. One big hand curled around her thigh. “Especially if I’m there with you. Even better, on top of you." Edie doesn't listen to her man she puts herself in harms way to save him, "what the hell are you doing here?” he growled, his free arm going around her waist. “I told you to wait in your room." I enjoyed this book I loved Alec and Edie
I won this wonderful book. Eden gets caught kissing a rake but the biggest gossip in the ton and the gossips mother, what is worse the gentleman she is caught kissing is the worse kiss she had ever received and of course she is going to have to find a way to fix her reputation. Her family wants to send her to stay with a cousin and let things change but she had to go to one more function before. Her twin is married to a wonderful man after having her own scandal with the same man but they grew up together and his friend Alec is having to retire from the spy service and go home to Scotland to learn his duties as Earl, he ran away at 16 because he was going to have to marry his cousin, who he didn't love and didn't like being told he had to. Well he ends up offering to take Eden and her mother to Scotland with him to give her time away from London and finds all kinds of problem with trying to break the the brethral of his cousin and him because he has been in love with Eden but couldn't tell her. There are murder plots and drama but what a wonderful story with a happy ending.
Vanessa Kelly has done it again!!! Another great book in The Renegade Royals series. I will read anything that has her name on it. The witty dialogue between Edie and Alec will make you laugh. She writes beautiful love stories that will bring tears to your eyes. A plot full of adventure, intrigue, passion that keeps you reading to well into the night. This book has a handsome highlander and a stubborn minx that makes for a great story. If you have read the other books in this series you will recognize Edie and Alec. Edie is the twin sister of Evie the heroine in How to Plan A Wedding for a Royal Spy and Will, the hero who is Alec's friend and fellow spy. Edie and Alec don't seem to like each but when they are forced together on the road to Scotland they realize there is more to their relationship then they thought. The Renegade Royals is a great series and anyone who loves historical romance it is a must read, and Vanessa Kelly is one of the best in the genre. Do not miss this series!!!!
