Tomoko plunges into her second summer vacation as a high school student. Though determined to do her best at doing absolutely nothing, she ends up getting dragged to a school function in the early days of her break...Later, Tomoko sees Kii-chan again for the first time in ages. Can Tomoko triumph in a covert battle of wills against her little cousin...?
The focus of the volume being the summer break unfortunately means that it can be compared to Tomoko's previous summer break. It doesn't help that previous events are constantly being referenced. The reason why it is unfortunate is because this makes it clear that the series just isn't emotionally punching the reader in the gut like it used to. Tomoko is better off and I don't like it. Of course, there was a progression made, going back to the way things used to be wouldn't make sense at this point, but I hope the series gets better or at least that the change is less noticeable moving on.
Summer vacation. Filled with bug hunting and beach visits! This one is pretty funny actually. I like that our main girl is finally out with friends, I think her humor plays off even better (The roach part was hilarious). I also really like seeing most of them happy for once instead of ending up in miserable situations. She still self sabotages, but it's more interesting when it's not the same way every time.
So I am finding it hard, 7 volumes in, to write an original review, however the series continues to be good, I really like the characters and the plot and find it somewhat relatable.
A lot more focus on secondary characters helps this book. Like the perspective that Tomoko is not the only one neurotic about her friends, but it's a more common feeling.
The focus of this volume is the summer break and the events during said summer break. When Tomoko begins her summer break she first starts by doing nothing but then she is forced to go to her school's baseball match and her cousin's place during the break by her mother. This action advances the plot by having Tomoko and her cousin Kiko attend a festival and pranking one another. Tomoko when being told to go to the baseball match "How dare they clog up my summer with the totally useless act of cheering on a bunch of baldies at some dumb event". I found the scenes where Tomoko and her cousin interact with each other as funny as well as when she was with her friends and my overall opinion of this volume is I would rate it highly. If you like this book you might wanna check out Chio Chan school's road although the main character being less socially awkward.
Tomoko evokes a little more sympathy than usual this volume. Will she and Komi-chan become friends? Are are they too much alike? Once again, missed pop culture references abound. It's impressive, really, despite all of them going over my head...
I'm in a funk..... so things that are funny just make me go "I think that's being funny" ....yup. that and many if the references are going over my head, and some of them are really specific to Japan.
