വായനയിലുടനീളം നെഞ്ചിൽ ഒരു വിങ്ങൽ അനുഭവിച്ചു വായിച്ച ഒരു ഓർമ്മക്കുറിപ്പ് വായിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഇങ്ങനെ ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ അനുഭവിച്ചവർക്ക് എങ്ങനെ ആയിരുന്നേനെ എന്ന് മനസിൽ ചോദിക്കേണ്ടി വന്ന നിമിഷങ്ങൾ.

ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഒരിക്കൽ എങ്കിലും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട ഒരു പുസ്തകം എന്ന് എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നു.

പ്രതിസന്ധി ഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ തളർന്ന് പോവാതെ ആത്മവിശ്വാസത്തോടെ മുന്നോട്ട് പോകാൻ ഊർജ്ജം നൽകുന്ന ഒരു അനുഭവസാക്ഷ്യം.

A poignant life story which is a legacy of a strong and determined mother – told by a resilient son!

This is a memoir by Babu Abraham, where he gives the readers memorable moments of his life in Kambilikandam which is a village located in Idukki district of Kerala. The book is a tribute to the strength and grit of his mother who fought bravely despite poverty, neglect and isolation and raised her four children.

Babu Abraham was the third child and only son to Kunnel Mary and her husband. Babu had two elder sisters and one younger sister. Mary’s husband an alcoholic who neglects to take care of his family and abuses his wife daily one fine evening decides that he is going to leave his family in Kambilikandam and go to Malabar to find some work and make money. Now left with no husband and not knowing how to pay back the loan from the bank taken by her husband, Mary took a desperate decision. She took her four children to the church and then headed to commit suicide by jumping into the river. She instructed them clearly that she would first jump and that the children should follow. When the eldest daughter Jessey told her mother to throw them first and then jump Mary says she couldn’t do that. This is when Jessey tells her mother:

"Mother, what if we travelled far from Kambilikandam? Only the people here know who we are. If we go to a village where we are strangers, we could beg for food and money without shame, and that way, we won't have to die."

This was the part which shook me completely. That was an awakening for Mary and she hugged Jessey tightly and kissed her. At that moment she decided she wouldn’t give up and that in a world where everything and everyone tried to put her down, Mary would stand tall and raise her children in honour.

Babu Abraham gives us a beautiful glimpse into his life up to the age of 26 and how he and his family went through the hardship and difficulties life threw at them. He also mentions about all the lovely people who were God sent and who helped Babu and his family knowingly and unknowingly.

നന്ദി കുന്നേല്‍ മേരി എന്ന സ്ത്രീയുടെ അസാധാരണമായ ഒരു ജീവിത കഥയാണ് "കമ്പിളി കണ്ടെത്തേ കല്‍ ഭരണികള്‍". നാലു മക്കളയേയും ചേർത്ത് ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തോടും ജീവിത സാഹചര്യങ്ങളോടും പടപൊരുതി മുന്നോട്ട് പോയപ്പോഴും, കുട്ടികളിൽ സ്നേഹവും മൂല്യവും കെടാതെ നിലനിർത്താൻ അവർക്ക് സാധിച്ചു. ഒരിക്കലും മറക്കാൻ പറ്റാത്ത ഒരു വായനാനുഭവം.

“……യഹൂദരുടെ ശുദ്ധീകരണകർമത്തിനുള്ള വെള്ളം നിറയ്ക്കുന്ന ആറു കൽഭരണികൾ അവിടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഓരോന്നിലും രണ്ടോ മൂന്നോ അളവു കൊള്ളുമായിരുന്നു. ഭരണികളിൽ വെള്ളം നിറയ്ക്കുവിൻ എന്ന് യേശു അവരോടു കൽപിച്ചു. അവർ അവയെല്ലാം വക്കോളം നിറച്ചു. ഇനി പകർന്നു കലവറക്കാരന്റെ അടുത്തു കൊണ്ടുചെല്ലുവിൻ എന്ന് അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു. അവർ അപ്രകാരം ചെയ്‌തു. കലവറക്കാരൻ വീഞ്ഞായി മാറിയ ആ വെള്ളം രുചിച്ചു നോക്കി.അത് എവിടെനിന്നാണെന്ന് അവൻ അറിഞ്ഞില്ല. അവൻ മണവാളനെ വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞു: എല്ലാവരും മേൽത്തരം വീഞ്ഞ് ആദ്യം വിളമ്പുന്നു, അതിഥികൾക്കു ലഹരിപിടിച്ചുകഴിയുമ്പോൾ താഴ്ന്നതരവും. എന്നാൽ, നീ നല്ല വീഞ്ഞ് ഇതുവരെയും സൂക്ഷിച്ചുവച്ചുവല്ലോ….”

കൽഭരണികൾ എന്നു കേൾക്കുമ്പോൾ എപ്പോഴും ആദ്യം മനസ്സിലോക്കോടിയെത്തുന്നത് മേൽപറഞ്ഞ ബൈബിൾ വചനങ്ങളാണ്. ശ്രീ. ബാബു അബ്രാഹാമിന്റെ ഓർമ്മക്കുറിപ്പുകളായ മാതൃഭൂമി ബുക്സ് പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ‘കമ്പിളികണ്ടത്തിലെ കൽഭരണികൾ’ എന്ന പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുമ്പോഴും മനസ്സിൽ മുഴങ്ങികേൾക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു ആ വാക്യങ്ങൾ.

ഉപേക്ഷിക്കപ്പെടലിന്റെയും ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിന്റേയും അവഗണനയുടെയും ഒറ്റപ്പെടുത്തലിന്റെയും കൊടിയവേദനയ്ക്കിടയിലും താൻപോരിമയോടെ പോരാടിയ ഒരമ്മയുടെ കഥ ഹൃദയസ്പർശിയായിതന്നെ ഓർക്കുകയാണ് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലൂടെ.

ഇടുക്കി ജില്ലയിലെ കമ്പിളികണ്ടത്ത് ജനിച്ചു വളർന്ന്, ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിന്റയും അവഗണനയുടെയും പരിഹാസത്തിന്റെയും കനൽവഴികളിലൂടെ നടന്ന് കയറി ഇപ്പോൾ ഫ്രാൻസിൽ മാനേജ്മെന്റ്‌ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ അസോസിയേറ്റ് പ്രൊഫസറും സോഷ്യോളജിയിൽ ഗവേഷകനുമായ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ തന്റെ ഇരുപത്തിയാറാം വയസ്സുവരെയുള്ള ജീവിതം ഓർത്തവതരിപ്പിക്കുകയാണീ കൃതിയിലൂടെ.

ഒരു പാതിരയ്ക്ക് തന്റെ നാലുമക്കളോടൊപ്പം അണക്കെട്ടിൽ ചാടി ജീവിതം അവസാനിപ്പിക്കാനായി ഇറങ്ങിതിരിച്ച ആ അമ്മയുടെ പോരാട്ടത്തിന്റെയും അതിജീവനത്തിന്റെയും കഥപറയുന്ന ഈ ഓർമ്മകുറിപ്പുകൾ വായനക്കാരെ പൊള്ളിക്കും തീർച്ച.

വായിച്ചുതീരുന്നതു വരെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തും ഈ എഴുത്തുകൾ. പലപ്പോഴും സങ്കടം നിറയും മനസ്സിൽ. അറിയാതെ നിറയും കണ്ണുകൾ.

ജീവിതത്തിൽ തോറ്റുപോയെന്ന് വിചാരിച്ചിരുന്നിടത്തുനിന്നുമുള്ള ഈ ഉയിർത്തെഴുനേല്പ്പിന്റെ അനുഭവക്കുറിപ്പുകൾ തീർച്ചയായും ഒരിക്കലെങ്കിലും വായിച്ചനുഭവിക്കേണ്ടത് തന്നെയാണ്.

“…‘ചുറ്റും വെള്ളം പൊങ്ങുന്നു എന്നു കണ്ടാൽ, നീന്തൽ വശമില്ല എന്നറിയാവുന്ന നീ പകച്ചു പേടിച്ച് അലമുറയിടരുത്. ആ വെള്ളപ്പാച്ചിലിൽ അവിടവിടെ പൊങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്ന മരക്കഷണങ്ങളിൽ പിടിച്ചുകയറി വെള്ളത്തിലങ്ങ് പൊങ്ങിക്കിടക്കണം. എന്നിട്ട് ഓളത്തിനൊപ്പം ഒഴുകുന്ന ശിഖരങ്ങൾ കാട്ടുവള്ളികളിൽ ചേർത്തുവെച്ചു കെട്ടി ഒരു ചങ്ങാടമുണ്ടാക്കണം. കരപറ്റിക്കഴിയുമ്പോഴുണ്ടാകുന്ന ആ സന്തോഷമായിരിക്കണം തുഴഞ്ഞുനീങ്ങുമ്പോൾ നിന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ. തീരമെത്തിക്കഴിയുമ്പോൾ മറ്റാർക്കെങ്കിലും ഉപകരിക്കാനായി ആ ചങ്ങാടം വെള്ളത്തിലേക്ക് തള്ളിവിടണം. മുങ്ങിപ്പോകുമായിരുന്ന ആരെങ്കിലുമൊക്കെ ആ ചങ്ങാടം കയറി തീരമെത്തുമ്പോൾ നമ്മുടെയുള്ളിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന സ്വാർത്ഥതയില്ലാത്ത ഒരു ആനന്ദമുണ്ട്–അതായിരിക്കണം നിന്നെ എന്നും നയിക്കേണ്ടത്.’…” ജീവിതയാത്രയിൽ താങ്ങായിരുന്ന തന്റെ മാതാവിന്റെ വാക്കുകൾ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ പങ്കുവെയ്ക്കുന്നു വായനക്കാർക്കൊരു പ്രചോദനമായ്.

Starting the year with this book feels like a gift I gave myself. It is one of those rare reads that leaves behind a quiet ache in your heart long after the final page is turned.
At its core, the book is a testament to resilience-the unwavering will of a man who keeps moving forward without surrender, even when life presents circumstances that could easily break him. It speaks of unyielding determination, of divine human bonds that held his hand when his steps faltered, and above all, of his Amma- Nannikkunnel Mary- whose presence rises above everything else.

ഇതുവരെ പേരുപോലും പരിചയമില്ലാത്ത ഒരാളുടെ ജീവിതാനുഭവങ്ങൾ എങ്ങനെ നല്ലൊരു വയനാനുഭവം നൽകും എന്നുള്ള ഒരു സംശയം ഈ പുസ്തകത്തെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള റിവ്യൂകൾ കേട്ടപ്പോൾ തോന്നിയിരുന്നു എങ്കിലും ഇതിലെ ആദ്യ പേജ് വായിച്ചതോടെ അത് മാറി. പിന്നെ ഇത് മുഴുവൻ വായിച്ചു തീരാതെ ഒരു സമാധാനം ഇല്ല എന്ന അവസ്ഥയായി. മനസ്സിൽ തട്ടുന്ന ആഖ്യാനത്തിലൂടെ സ്വന്തം ജീവിതാനുഭവങ്ങളെ ഇത്രയും ഭംഗിയായി ഒരാൾ എഴുതിവെക്കുമ്പോൾ ആ പുസ്തകം എങ്ങനെ വായിക്കപ്പെടാതിരിക്കും. കമ്പിളികണ്ടത്തെ കൽഭരണികൾ എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിലൂടെ ബാബു അബ്രഹാമിന്റെ അനുഭവങ്ങളിലൂടെ കടന്ന് പോകുമ്പോൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തേക്കാൾ മനസ്സിൽ കയറിക്കൂടിയത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അമ്മയായിരുന്നു. ഇത് വരെ വായിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ സ്ത്രീ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ ഇത്രയും ബോൾഡ് ആയൊരു സ്ത്രീയെ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടോ എന്ന് സംശയമാകും. എല്ലാ കടങ്ങളും വരുത്തി വച്ചു വീടും പറമ്പും പണയത്തിലാക്കി, നാല് മക്കളെയും ഭാര്യയെയും ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് ഇറങ്ങി പോകുന്ന ഭർത്താവിന്റെ പിന്നാലെ ചെന്ന് ഈ മക്കളെയും കൊണ്ട് ഞാൻ എന്ത് ചെയ്യുമെന്ന് ചോദിച്ചു നിസ്സഹായായി നിൽക്കുന്ന ആ അമ്മയിൽ നിന്നും ആ മക്കളെയും കുടുംബത്തെയും ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീക്ഷകളിലേക്കും വിജയങ്ങളിലേക്കും വഴിതിരിച്ചു വിടാൻ കാരണമായ ധീരയായ ആ അമ്മയിലേക്കുള്ള വഴികളും ദൂരവും അത്ര ചെറുതായിരുന്നില്ല. ജീവിതത്തിലെ ചെറിയ പ്രതിസന്ധികളിൽ പോലും തളർന്നു പോകുന്നവർക്ക് പ്രതീക്ഷയുടെ വലിയ വെളിച്ചമേകാൻ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിനു കഴിയും.

✒️"തീവ്രമായി അഭിലഷിച്ച് പിന്തുടരുന്ന ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങൾ ആർക്കും നമ്മിൽനിന്ന് എടുത്തുമാറ്റാനാവില്ല. നമ്മുടെ മരുഭൂമികളിൽ ഓരംപറ്റി മരുപ്പച്ചകളുമുണ്ട്. മണൽക്കാറ്റ് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന മായ ആ മരുപ്പച്ചകളെ കാണാതാക്കാം. അപ്പോൾ കണ്ണുകൾ അടച്ച് ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് നോക്കുമ്പോൾ എപ്പോഴെങ്കിലും ലഭിച്ച ഒരിറ്റ് സ്നേഹത്തെ നാം ഓർത്താൽ മതി. മരുപ്പച്ചകൾ ലക്ഷ്യത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ആ യാത്രയ്ക്ക് ഇന്ധനമാകും."

This book is overhyped, overrated. Even though this book takes you to the nostalgic era of 80s many of the things explained seems repeating and the interesting or clutch part happens from the last 50 pages which is pretty okyish

What I liked:
This book shows the immense power of a mother.
Mary, the authors mom is glorified and she deserves it

What I disliked:

Many instances kept repeating, homosexual individuals kept on coming in each intervals and I genuinely doubts it’s real or not.
There are many other points to be added here but it might lead to spoilers.

ചെറുപ്പം മുതൽ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ കടന്നുവന്ന കഠിനമായ ജീവിതാനുഭവങ്ങളുടെ സമാഹാരം. കമ്പിളിക്കണ്ടമെന്ന ചെറു മലയോര ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഫ്രാൻസ് വരെ എത്തിച്ചേർന്ന അവിശ്വസനീയമായ ജീവിതം. തങ്ങൾ നിശ്ചയിക്കുന്ന വാർപ്പുമാതൃകകളിൽ നിന്നും വ്യതിചലിക്കുന്ന വ്യക്തികളെ, കുടുംബവും സംഘടിത മതവും എങ്ങനെ അകറ്റിനിർത്തുന്നു എന്നതിനു മികച്ച ഉദ്ദാഹരണമാണു എഴുത്തുകാരൻ്റെ അമ്മയുടെ ജീവിതം. ജീവിതത്തിൽ ചെറു പ്രതിസന്ധികൾ നേരിടുമ്പോൾ, തളരാതെ ചെറുത്തുനിൽക്കാൻ പ്രചോദിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു വായനാനുഭവം.
