When Topher Nightshade and the other bumbling ghost hunters of Specter Quest were allowed into the abandoned camp, they thought it was a dream come true. That was, of course, because they didn’t know that Camp Tekonichia was home to boundless spirit energy, three very bored ghosts, and a powerful magic spell on the verge of completion.
Now, these three will have to race against time and an ancient evil trying to stop the whole world from turning into a haven for restless spirits. Aided only by a mysterious medium and the camp’s resident ghosts, none of them have a clue how they’re supposed to save the world.
Especially since they only have until sunrise to do it.
I fell in love with Drew Hayes Fred books, so... when I was looking for a fun and entertaining Halloween read I decided to check this story and it didn't dissappoint. But while I loved Auggie, Thopher and the story was as fun and entertaining as I hoped , I'm starting to see a recurring problem in Hayes stories with the female characters, but before I say more... I guess I have to read more of his works (after all considering how many books he has released, 3 are not enough)
I love all Drew’s books. He’s talented, imaginative, and articulate. Spins paranormal like no other. Topher is a unique character and the team of three - Topher, Auggie, and Kay - are fun and perfect. Velt elevates the story to epic proportions and I see her as a future part of this group at times and a stand-alone character. All of Drew’s characters have depth, detail, and dimensions like few writers have. Highly recommend anything by Drew Hayes.
I have a lot of fun reading this book. The characters are fun and exciting. Each with their own little personality. The length of the book definitely helps this book to stay fresh from start to end. If you want to relax and read a short and exciting adventure, this book is for you.
Great book by Drew Hayes, once again great characters with lot of substance to them, great action, plot to end all life on earth by unleashing an evil death god... Good book!
Solidly entertaining. Topher reminds me of an alternate universe ghost hunting Thunder (from Pears and Perils). I saw a review suggesting Drew Hayes' female characters are problematic. I didn't think so, but as a matter of course, I like badass ghost punching chicks who save the world. YMMV.
We found Auggie, Kay, and Topher in their office. They host a ghost hunting TV show and they were about to head on location. Topher was the believer in the group and he set them up on their weekend off. But it was too good a deal to pass up. They were headed to Camp Tekonichia because it had been shut down for years and had a claim of being haunted. (This is where my brain instantly goes to Camp Crystal Lake!) Auggie was the tech guy and Kay was a wiz at the editing and splicing. Velt who was an oddball in the regular world as well as the supernatural had already broken into the camp because some serious stuff was going to go down that weekend. Once there, they all met up by sad circumstance along with the help of some bored ghosts, they had to stop the end of the world as we knew it. Could they make it until sunrise without the world falling apart around their ears?
Topher is that lovable, muscle-bound, not-so-smart guy. He has a heart of gold and a true belief in the supernatural whether he can really see it or not. Auggie is overly-cautious, stoic, and too smart for his own good…and he’s Topher’s best friend. Kay can’t stay sober, she’s beyond sarcastic, and she’s barely tolerant of either of the boys. But this ragtag bunch works well together. Their characters compliment each other right off the bat. Add Velt, who is just a bada**, and you have yet another compliment to their group. This book is funny. Crazy things happen and what you expect to happen doesn’t, and what you don’t expect to happen does. Add in some bored ghosts and there’s all sorts of craziness. This story is only 80% of the book, but there’s a bonus story of Velt’s behind it. It’s not an origins story, but it does give a little backstory for her character. So this book is a two-fer. I really enjoyed this book as a whole. I just wish I knew more people who’d read it.
Mr. Hayes has this flare for developing unique and perfectly flawed characters. Each with such a distinct voice, that you can’t help but hear them all so individually in your head. He’s also fond of putting his characters into some very unusual and sometimes insane situations. The amazing part about that, is the characters don’t always react the way we’d expect, kind of like how we all do. We find that well of strength or irrational fear, and it creates our actions for us, rather than running true to script. Which is part of what I find some fascinating about Mr. Hayes work. They are light-hearted enough to cause belly laughs, but still true to the essence that what makes us human. So, as I do with all my reviews, would I recommend this story? Yeah, if you’re looking for a quick read with some ghosts that aren’t out to eat your soul…well not all of them anyway…then this is definitely the book for you. This is fine for all teens on up.
I follow Drew Haye’s website eager for the third installment of his tales of a college certification program for superheroes. While the Junior year tale is almost finished, Drew has extra, unrelated tales like Topher Nightshade vs. The Camp of The Undead Apocalypse (ebook). Topher and his two friends run Specter Quest, internet psychic investigators who have never found a real ghost. Invited to the haunted Camp Tekonichia, they don’t know of the three ghosts trapped there, or of the wraith who, with an ancient ceremony, wants to bring the dead to life. Then August Parish, his technical genius, has his body stolen by the Wraith and becomes a ghost. As the elements of the ceremony continue, ghosts start appearing and a Medium, Velt who can kick wraith ass shows up. Velt has an extra story at the end of this fun adventure. A summer camp closed for 20 years, no serial killers, just lots of undead and vicious ghosts. Will the intrepid host of the show, the girl camera person and their genius tech guy survive?
Another successful escape betwixt the pages of a Drew Hayes' book. Relatable characters in an unimaginable situation, great story progression. On to the next :)
