"Nor Gold" picks up where "The Pirate Captain" left off: Cate Mackenzie, a woman who lost everything to the Jacobite Uprising, trying to make sense out of being sold to Thomas, Nathanael Blackthorne’s pirate friend. Once again, Fate has robbed her of both her heart and her home.
As Nathan sails off, Cate tries to come to terms with her new situation. Practicality tells her Thomas is not an altogether poor future: he’s amiable, generous, and most of all, willing… but her heart is still with Nathan.
Nathan, in the meantime, has but two quests: to get Cate back, and to claim his revenge against Lord Breaston Creswicke and the Royal West Indies Mercantile Company. In that process, he discovers there is no outrunning his past and that there are consequences for every action.
The Caribbean Sea isn’t big enough for Nathan, Thomas and Creswicke. Paths cross… and sparks fly.
"Kerry Lynne was a history major in college and went into teaching for a few years. Then she wound up in the decorative painting world, where she traveled, taught and published for over 37 years and as luck would have it her hand stopped working. So she went back to what she knew: writing, history and sailing."
Lynne's fictional writings include The Pirate Captain, Chronicles of a Legend, “Nor Silver” (2014 Next Generation Indie Book Finalist Award for Historical Fiction), The Pirate Captain, Nor Gold”, The Pirate Captain, "Treasured Treasures" and a published short story, LocoThology #3-The Price of Victory (The Pirate Captain) along with the 4th book TBR, The Pirate Captain, Cursed Blessings. The Pirate Captain series is not a romance but an "intense" life long love story between the Pirate Captain and a Jacobite widow. It is not a story that ends in smiles and happily ever afters but there are deep emotions shared and sacrifices witnessed. It is not a Treasure Island “wannabe” nor will Blackbeard, Mary Reed or Jack Rackam make an appearance but there are Captain Blackthorne, Cate MacKenzie, Thomas, Hattie, and Breston Creswicke.
Comparing Captain Nathanael Blackthorne to Jack Sparrow is inevitable. What other pirate has there been in pop culture for the last 60 years? They are similar, both are pirates and captains in the West Indies from there ends the sameness. Nathan is more dangerous and lethal, because his life has been far more unforgiven.
For those of you who are landlubbers Cate the female main character, who is a lousy sailor helps explain the sailing of a 1700’s pirate ship. If you don’t understand a sailing term there is a Pinterest glossary provided at www.piratecaptain.net (for not only the nauticalese, but some of the 18th century turns of the tongue).
Kerry Lynne, Author, of "The Pirate Captain, Chronicles of a Legend," Nor Silver," (2013), 2014 Next Generation Indie Book Historical Fiction Finalist Award; "Nor Gold", The Pirate Captain (2015), and "Treasured Treasures", The Pirate Captain (2018). Lynne is a native of Michigan, a prior teacher with a lifelong interest in history, writing, and sailing, which were the passions that led to the creation of The Pirate Captain series.
A word on literary perfection. Every writer knows what an elusive goal it is. A historical "fact' is always up for argument and four people can produce six different opinions on the use of a comma or sentence structure. Between the mariner's slang, 18th Century turn-of-the-tongue, writing style, and 21st Century publishing, not all errors might be as they seem. Kerry Lynne
The second rollocking adventure of Captain Nat, Master Cate (yes she's an officer now) and Captain Tom as they cut their way though the high seas. Only this time there is vengeance on the mind of our captain's for one Lord Breaston Cheswicke, who had tortured Old Nat to the point of near madness years before. This new adventure moves very well, unlike the first book, there are several terrific moments in this, especially a rather erotic scene(s) with Cate and Nathan which are well drawn, the trap to set up Lord Cheswicke by faithful Thomas, the capture and torture of Cate herself which makes one glad she's a fictional character, otherwise I doubt if any real woman would be so lucky to recover from all that is done to Cate. The ending is more puzzling than a cliffhanger (no cliffs were used in this cliffhanger) which made me wonder how Ms. Lynne is going to pull this plot device out of the fire. They say the second book in a series is a let down, not this book even at 700+ pages. Keeps the reader...well reading into the late night. So when does the next one appear?
Get plenty of sleep beforehand! Make sure there is food in the house, and no work to be done! Because when you read Nor Gold, you will not want anything to interrupt this great read including sleeping!!
When I read the first book, I could hear the Pirates of the Caribbean movie score playing in the back of mind. Not so with this book. Nor Gold is pretty much a romance book and not so much a pirate adventure.
This is disappointing because the series has so much going for it: great characters, great backdrop (Caribbean), and fundamentally a great idea (pirate historical fiction). I'm not sure what the author was trying to do with this story. It does have certain Outlander-ish aspects to it but even that starts to go flat after awhile. The story focuses on the two main characters, Nathan and Cate. There is a fair amount of navel gazing (both literally and figuratively speaking) about what they want to do with their lives. After all, Nathan is a pirate married to his ship and Cate loves Nathan but is the relationship sustainable? Nathan can't live without Cate. She is as close to a soulmate he has ever met or probably will ever meet. Of course Nathan, a veteran of literally hundreds liaisons with women (mostly whores), has the best sex ever with Cate.
Add to this mixture a couple baddies. One is a treacherous old pirate acquaintance of Nathan's. There are a couple of scenes with this character but doesn't appear in the book again. I guess he was put in the story to add tension. Then there is Cheswicke, Nathan's arch enemy. We learn a little more about what makes this guy tick. There were a couple of other characters from the first book that make an appearance but really don't contribute significantly to the story. Too bad, I think there were some missed opportunities there.
Nor Gold is 700+ pages and I kept waiting for something to happen. Things do but they are long drawn out affairs. The big event happens and it sort of fizzles like sea water after a splash. Then we get to the ending---I DID NOT LIKE THE DAMN ENDING! I'm not sure the ending could be called a cliffhanger or not. It depends on what the author does with the next book.
The story of Nor Gold is fairly circular in nature which was another kind of a disappointment. I like to see epic stories such as these progress to whatever is coming next. This one does but at a glacial pace.
In spite of all that I mention above, Nor Gold does have redeeming qualities. Overall, the story is well written and I think might have more of an appeal to those who like to read Romance stories. I'm not the best judge of romance stories though. I don't mind love stories but I was hoping for more high adventure in this one. Hopefully, (fingers crossed) the next book will be more of a sweeping story with some high adventure!
Nor Gold picked up right where Pirate Captain Chronicles of a Legend left off. I never thought a 2nd book of a series could be better than the first, but i was wrong. If you are interested in Adventure, Romance, and History this book is for you. Nathan Blackthorn is a main character that i could both Love and Hate, but as i learned of his past i can almost understand. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and kept building excitement to the very end. I will be first in line when the next book is released.
Aw damn, I really wanted to like this book as much as I liked the first one but unfortunately, it just wasn't as good to me. Spoilers ahead* As much as I love the world it's set in, the two main characters started to really annoy me at points in this book and I felt this book unfortunately fell victim to cliché romance novel tropes and those parts really annoyed me. Cate seemed to become really dependent on Nathan, moping about when she didn't get her own way and when she was without Nathan instead of doing her own thing and taking the initiative in the same way she did in the first book. Cate definitely sulked in the first book but she sulked when she wasn't independent or was being held hostage by pirates (which was totally understandable). There were also parts of this book where Nathan just came across as a downright jackass, openly flirting with other women, even borderline cheating on Cate all because 'he's a pirate and that's what he does'. OK? I get that it's probably pretty accurate for men of that time period living that lifestyle but, surely that kind of ruins him as a lovable, good partner that these books obviously build him up to be? Maybe it's just the feminist in me that just actively opposes manipulative, shitty behaviour from men, even in novels because I feel like that normalises it, but, it did kind of ruin his character for me a bit. I get that it's fantasy and he did do a lot to show his love for Cate and apologise etc but it just took me out of the otherwise Team Nathan boat I was previously on. That being said, the introduction of Creswicke as a villain was really interesting and I enjoyed the story's use of him and his motivations for wanting Nathan (though I am super glad it didn't completely copy Outlander and go down that creepy sexual abuse route because, that would have been uncomfortable, and Cate's abuse scenes made me uncomfortable enough. I enjoyed this book enough to at least attempt reading the rest of the series, but, unlike a lot of the readers of this series, I didn't think this book was as good as the first. I just hope this last one impresses me like that first book did.
Nor Gold; #2 in the Pirate Captain series; where do I start unforgettable MC's Nathan, Cate and Thomas, who are just people with their own loves and lost dreams trying to survive in a brutal world. Cap'n Blackthorne is a rare breed of man and in a mood after his disastrous attempt to hold onto his treasure in Nor Silver. Evil enemies are abound plenty of twist, turns and subplots; who can you trust no one or just one person, if only! A pirate captain's life in the 1750's is the backdrop of the story with plenty of strategic sailing, sea battles and curses a normal every day in a Pirate Captain's life. Nor Gold is action/adventured packed but revolves around the relationship of a Pirate Captain, one woman and his ship (love, hate and expectation); pretty sure it will be a wait for the next book Treasured Treasures ( has to take time to write this type of book; what with the research and twists) meanwhile will reread both books to see what I missed: special with Nathan and Cate. It is historical fiction but has a love story and there is a curse; tears, laughter, love *adult scenes and violent; these characters are so real, wish I could meet them.
This very poorly edited book, with all its grammatical errors and gross typos, is one of the best books I've ever read! This is writing at its creative best if one can omit the glaring scribner's errors. This author has, not only an awsomely creative mind, but the ability to put creativity to paper. The sea battles are so real you can almost smell the smoke and blood as well as hear the creatures of the islands and creaking of the ship's seams and mumurings of the pirates. The romance is so well developed with all the feelings and yearnings described with great care and intimacies played out in detail. It's real, harsh, down-to-earth honesty with two people baring their souls to one another....."there's no secrets on a ship....." I love the imperfect and very human characters.....gritty, hard, ugly, beautiful, ruthless....both primary and secondary characters. All so well defined. Yes, I highly recommend this book, this series to readers of historical fiction, romantic readers, pirate genre! I'm overwhelmed with praise, and can barely wait for the next book in this swashbuckling series!
Can I give this 100 stars because 5 is nowhere near enough. It's rare that the second book in a series is better than the first but Nor Gold completely and utterly blew the first book out of the water. I don't even know what to say right now that was exceptional. The emotions I went through while reading this are nothing short of bordering on full on crazy. There were times my jaw literally hit the floor with some of the twists and turns, I hated Thomas and then loved him, could have banged Cate and Nathan's heads together on plenty more occasions and could have cried enough tears to float the Ciara Morganse. The last couple of chapters had my heart on my mouth and beating about 1000 beats a second, I'm absolutely speechless with that ending. I can't wait until book three now and I daren't even try to guess what might happen next because I didn't even come close with how I thought this one would go.
Kerry Lynne as served up another rousing tale in her Pirate Captain: Chronicles of a Legend with Nor Gold. Once again Nathan Blackthorne, Cate McKenzie, and their pirate ship sails into trouble and revenge...and good, old fashioned love. Enjoy!
Kept me at the edge of my seat! Sea battles, adventure and deep love story. Great friendship, loyalty, honor and revenge. What more could you want? Can't wait for the next one!
The Pirate Captain books are a mind blowing trip into the world of pirates and sailing: Nor Gold blew me away it takes up directly after Nor Silver ends with Captain Nathanael Blackthorne (Pirate Captain) on his ship after a very bad night under a chair? It never lets up with a surprise ending "never saw that coming". This is not a romance but the MC's are driven by a passion for each other that is so intense, OMG. An action/adventure non stop roller coaster ride on the high seas to me it is in a genre of it's own sort of Outlander the "Pirate Edition"; really enjoy the twist on 18th century style of writing and Lynne's unique storytelling by dialogue that makes these books real page turners. Waiting impatiently for the next book, Treasured Treasures.
This is the second book in the series and it's better than the first. Another friend suggested this after knowing I loved diana gabaldon books . It's got a lot of twists and turns and just so good . A love story but a with lot more .
Lots of action, surprises, and romance! Some parts are jaw-dropping and horrific; while others are humorous and heart wrenching. Your emotions will be all over the place!
