Papa Arima, man. What a beast. Slaying ghouls left and right at 15 without batting an eyelash. One of the greatest characters of the series, undoubtedly. Also, I just noticed that we see the final scene with Fura through Amon’s eyes in chapter 29 of TG. Amazing.

I'm still not sure if I like Arima, but he sure is a badass. An unemotional, sociopath, but still a complete badass.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for side stories, but yeah, same as the light novels, I really enjoyed this!

It's nice to see the ghouls from yet another point of view (first series was mostly from the ghouls POV, while -as far as I can tell- the RE series is more from the CCG one, so this time: simple humans). And, although I never had any interest for Arima in the main series, it's still interesting to see his early (prodigy) days.

Very nice spin-off about Kishou... I now see him as a much cooler person. I like how Minami turned out to be a Ghoul. And I see the connection where she told Taishi to try living like a Ghoul. Because later, a poor guy named Kaneki was born.

I feel like this is a good setup for the Tokyo Ghoul: re sequel, because the appearance of Arima in the end of Tokyo Ghoul made me conflicted about him, and this added to that.

I'm not sure I like him, and I don't know his true intentions. The art wasn't as elaborate and beautiful as it was in the Tokyo Ghoul series, so that was a disappointment.

Why was this oddly wholesome? 💀 Arima making his first real friend, Arima and Taishi's friendship and Taishi getting married to Aki 😌

AND TAISHI BECOMING A GHOUL INVESTIGATOR!

Nice to see young Arima! And how he teams up with Fura after Fura's friends are killed by the Lantern Ghoul. They start hunting down ghouls together, the young CCG investigator & the crappy student :P They save one of their classmates, Minami, but she turns out to be ghoul that leads them into a trap & brings JASON ALONG YOUNG FUCKING JASON WHP ESCAPES! BUT SHE, the LANTERN, ENDS UP WOUNDED BY ARIMA'S HAND AND KILLED BY FURA'S. Fura's shocked, and she was killing the 'bad unwanted' people of society & he said that's what made her inhumane...12 years later, Fura & Arima are both in the CCG & Fura married his old friend Aki, who escaped the day his friends were killed.

i like arima but this oneshot seriously had no personality at all lol..... it was like. a watered down version of tg with worse art. i was hoping this would give me more insight into arima as a character like maybe his interesting takes on morality + how he arrived at those beliefs, but he didnt change at all through the years so that development is impossible to track. the art style also isn't ishida's usual, it's a bit messier and i found it hard to follow. there is such a thing as too much movement. also as soon as yamori showed up i knew i was going to hate it. worst character in the world. he sours literally everything.

Perfectly fine. I think this was originally meant to scroll like a Webtoon, b/c there's some blank white pages and sometimes the layout looks wrong. Recommend reading one page at a time It flows better.

My biggest gripe is its predictable.

Ishida experiments with subtle color tones in this one. The art is also loose. Like little more than a draft. Again, a lot better one page at a time. It's got a more personal feeling.

Tokyo Ghoul is quickly becoming one of my favourite manga series of all time, as well as one of my favourite stories as a whole. Therefore, I’m obviously going to read all of the content available set in this world, seeing I’m a completionist.

Tokyo Ghoul Jack is one of the main spinoffs from the series, and it focuses on Arima’s past, being established as a prequel to the main events of the series. I’ve heard that this one can be better appreciated by the end of Re, since you’re more attached to the characters that you meet here, but I already liked them quite a lot. I really appreciate that Sui Ishida is giving us many different points of view for both the ghouls and the CCG, and how even characters that are downright evil you end up feeling a tiny bit sad for.

On the other hand, something that clearly sets this standalone volume apart from the others is the art style, which is more simplistic and has a more unfinished look. I don’t know how to feel about it, because even if it made some of the action scenes easier to follow (one of my biggest complaints for the series), it also was left in need of more details and strokes, especially in the facial expressions and characters in general.

Overall, this broadened the scope of the Tokyo Ghoul story, something that I will always love, but the art style took me out of the story at certain points, and some of the plot points felt a smidge unrealistic.

That artstyle was intriguing...
Imma see the anime adaptation aswell...hope it didn't butcher it up alot
Man I'd also like to own a physical copy of this

- sheesh i mean this was fast paced cuz it was only 7 chapters but oooh did the "12 years later" part hit the feels.
- also taishi kinda looked like shirazu to me in some panels TT

Decided to read this online before I start to read the original series tomorrow but I think that this was a very good side story, Arima seems like a great character and I liked this bit of a side story for him - and the rest of the subplot / cast was quite good too. Can't wait to continue with the OG series and the other sub story afterwards later on.

I actually liked the water color style, however...
When I heard of this I though I would be able to read a bit about Daddy's backstory. But it was just normal case from his early years. It was fine I guess.

Never got around to reading this while I was originally reading the series, but now I have. It’s a solid side story, but you don’t really get any additional insight into Arima’s character. Also, the art is a significant step down from the main series.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. I really like Arima even though I know I shouldn't. Because of this, it was cute.
