Drawn into a strange quest by a bird and a sword, a lone warrior travels across a silent landscape of smoke and dirt and bone. Transformed by what he encounters along the way, he searches for the Thousand Demon Tree, and the hope of a new world that lies beyond it. The Thousand Demon Tree is a wordless graphic novel with printed cover boards. This expanded edition includes a 32-page behind the scenes section that features sketches and commentary revealing how Jeffrey Alan Love created The Thousand Demon Tree.
I only recently became aware of the work of Jeffrey Alan Love, and I'm a fan right away. His style combines elements of various printmaking techniques to create stark, dramatic black-and-white (and occasionally red) page designs that are simple in structure, complex in execution, and breathtaking in delivery. The Thousand Demon Tree is a wordless book, and Love's artwork is more than up to the task of fully conveying this short tale of dark magic and epic consequences. I will be reading more of Love's work very soon!
Moj najveći problem s ovom knjigom je u tome što mi se prethodna više svidela. Al evo, dva puta sam premerio i presekao da to nije njena krivica, it's me. A knjiga čije bih stranice opet rado gledao na zidovima svakako zaslužuje sve zvezdice koje mogu da dam.
Love ovde radi nešto drugačije u odnosu na Notes from the Shadowed City.
Ako vam ikada zatreba dobar argument zašto elektronske knjige neće nikad u potpunosti istisnuti papirne, slobodno suparnika mlatnite ovom po glavi.
A story told completely through images, The Thousand Demon Tree is spooky and captivating. Love's illustrations are dark and gritty, with just enough detail to get the point across. This book is all done in black and white, with a smattering of red and green at the end for emphasis. It's about a man's journey to the tree (duh, I guess) and what happens to him on the way. I won't say anything else about the plot for 2 reasons. 1-It's a short book, you need to experience it for yourself! 2-Given there are no words, I think there's a lot that's left to the interpretation of the reader so my understanding of the plot could be very different from your own. I think that's really cool. Part of me thinks this could be linked to his other book, Notes from the Shadowed City, but again, that could just be based on how I interpreted everything. Regardless, I can't wait for more books from Love, whether they have a bit of text or not! His creations always leave me wondering and wanting more details!
A beautiful, short graphic novel told in images alone with not a single line of dialogue. The art is deceptively simple but utterly breathtaking to view. The story is told in a vague, almost dream-like way that is obviously left for the individual to absorb and decipher. Highly recommended.
Seriously!! Y’all need to read this book!! The artwork on every page is beautiful and fits so well and the story is elegant, brutal, beautiful, and moving.
I got this about a month ago and I didnt want to review it right away since I was very conflicted but I decided to go with my first instinctual reaction to finishing the story. Its just really not that good. I was struggling with liking it since it cost quite a bit for how little value you get out of it so I wanted to convince myself I had secretly enjoyed the hell out of it but thats just not the case.
Sure the art is great but thats like a bare minimum of entry nowadays. I can find amazing artists creating a never-ending list of new properties or buy previously completed works. For less money than I spent on this, I purchased the first Berserk Deluxe Edition it's 20x length with some of the best art in the comic/manga industry.
What really gets me is how many nearly empty pages there are, this book is quite tall and on more than I'd like the only thing drawn is a thin strip of ground and the character walking on it. These scenes take up like 5% of the whole page and it honestly feels like wasted space when more story could be told, more energy could be captured.
In my opinion, all products are made to be compared aka how is one thing in comparison to another as they all are vying for your money but more importantly your time and precious mental real estate. IMO unless you're madly in love with his art (which you can be it is breathtaking in his use of black) this book isn't worth it compared to what you can buy instead and honestly if you love his art I'd just recommend buying a piece you can hang up to enjoy more frequently and passively which is what I would do if given the chance to go redo.
The only reason this got 4 stars instead of 5 was because I like Notes from the Shadowed City just a tiny bit better. I felt the story flowers better in that one
But this one was still unbelievable!! I loved the art style once again and there is always something epic and haunting about his books and the illustrations that I just can’t get enough of. I will buy everything that has his name on it
Art from the incomparable Jeffrey Alan Love. It's a wordless saga both epic and grim, and acts as a fine follow-up to Notes from the Shadowed City. Something to place on the coffee table on Halloween.
Dramatic imagery and illustrations tell a tale that sets the imagination on fire! A graphic novel that inspires the viewer to ‘step’ into the story line and create their own version of events by stimulating the most powerful computer there is—the mind. Great illustrations, greater story.
seems like this story was based on a dream the author had. it's beautifully rendered, but I can't help but feel a little annoyed that so little is depicted on multiple full pages
