Stonefire Dragons #1

Sacrificed to the Dragon

Rate this book
In exchange for a vial of dragon’s blood to save her brother’s life, Melanie Hall offers herself up as a sacrifice to one of the British dragon-shifter clans. Being a sacrifice means signing a contract to live with the dragon-shifters for six months to try to conceive a child. Her assigned dragonman, however, is anything but easy. He’s tall, broody, and alpha to the core. There’s only one problem—he hates humans.

Due to human dragon hunters killing his mother, Tristan MacLeod despises humans. Unfortunately, his clan is in desperate need of offspring to repopulate their numbers and it’s his turn to service a human female. Despite his plans to have sex with her and walk away, his inner dragon has other ideas. The curvy human female tempts his inner beast like no other.

NOTE: This is the entire first story arc of the Stonefire Dragons, complete with a HEA and no cliffhangers.

- What did I liked about this book?
- The blurb

The way the story unfolded, the character development or lack thereof, the juvenile logic that every character possessed which was reflected in dialogue and actions, they all made this book a big, great disappointment.

This is probably my fourth dragon/shifter type of book that I’ve read this week ( I seem to be in a very specific type of reading mood - considering I’m gravitating towards this genre) and none of them got an above average rating. They were all highly skimmable - as was this current book.

The idea behind the story is interesting but the way the story enfolds and the interactions between characters are off.

Some parts felt like written by a 7 years old with her rose coloured view of how human reactions should be. For example, there is this dragonwoman who's been going trough PTSD, after witnessing her mum dying at the hand of humans and being beaten and burned so bad she is still scarred, for more than a decade. She hates humans, is almost agoraphobic. And then our heroine comes, puts her hands on her waist and gives her a speech. Bam she is on her way to healing. All psychiatrists are at their feet, slow clapping

I never understood what the heroine found redeemable in the hero. What made her feel or why she was doing something.

The book was a clusterfuck on all fronts except the promise of the story. I think with time and experience, the author could become a better storyteller and rock the dragonworld. I'll keep reading...

(4.5 stars, but as a personal rule, I round down to 4.)

I'd never heard of Ms. Jessie Donovan before I read this, so I started Sacrificed to the Dragon without knowing what to expect. I didn't even get the chance to check any Goodreads review; I just took a leap of faith and bought it by impulse.

And I'm so freaking glad I did because I L-O-V-E-D this book. Actually, if it weren't for a few flaws, I would have given this a glowing 5-star rating. Without a doubt, this is a definite must-read if you're looking for a good contemporary paranormal romance. These dragon-shifters are sexy as fuck, man. Sexy as fuck.
description

By the way, if you think this is erotica, you're wrong. This is full-fledged romance. Dirty, sexy, "I-might-get-pregnant-from-this" romance. Granted, it doesn't have the most complex plot or the deepest set of characters, but it does have a solid story to tell. The dragon-shifters' world intrigued me and made me want to read more about it.

Oh, I just loved reading about Tristan and Mel. Mel's actually one of my favourite heroines of all time. I absolutely loved, loved, loved her fierceness. And did I mention how she refused to wallow over Tristan's initial jackass attitude?
Unless Tristan groveled and pleaded, which was highly unlikely, she wasn’t going to put herself out there only to have him shoot her down again. The dragonman had made his choice. No matter how much she missed his presence in bed next to her, she wasn’t going to put up with his bullshit just so she could feel his hot, naked skin against hers again. The heartache wasn’t worth it.

description

As for Tristan, I loved him, even when he was being a big prick. I guess that's because I understood, early on, why he was being a jackass, and yes, he was justified. For someone who has a really low tolerance for assholes, that says a lot. It's hard to stay angry at him, too, since he's such an ADORABLE, sexy beast.
description

As much as I loved this, though, I have to admit that it has its flaws. For instance, it takes some time to get used to Tristan's relationship with his dragon. You see, dragon-shifters are not dragons per se. Instead, they have dragons inside them, to which they can communicate with. It took a while to wrap my head around that but once I did, reading the story went more smoothly.

Also, I didn't like how the writer kept on using "fuck" instead of "sex" or "making love". Don't get me wrong. I'm not a prude or anything. In fact, I have a strong affinity to the word, but there's a limit to using it. Using "fuck" to describe the sexual act between Mel and Tristan even when they're already in love with each other just felt wrong. Also, calling Mel a "human sacrifice" felt equally disturbing at times.

Despite these minor flaws, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I'm definitely going to read more from this series. By the way, did I mention how amazing the epilogue is?

Damn if that wasn't the most romantic shit I've ever read. Ladies, from the words of my amazing boyfriend, if a man is willing enough to cut his dick for you, that's a clear indication that he truly loves you.

Let me start off by saying this book was trash...everything about it was offensive. However, it was also impossible not to finish. I was fascinated with it the way people are with a car wreck. The obsession with her weight is annoying. Why can't you just have a plus size...or any size heroine really without spending loads of time on it? The pnr trope of inter species hatred is very hard to pull off for me and this one didn't manage it. The hero is verbally and physically abusive. He never so much as apologizes just flips a switch. Heroine is told that since she's a mate match she better consent or she'll get raped. All sex scenes...even the fullyconsensual ones...are super cringey. All female authors should know better than to use any version of the phrase "own that pussy" in any way other than mockingly. Also the dudes didn't have to make any effort to actually make sex enjoyable because their magic semen causes orgasms *massive eye roll*. He shows no care for any pain he causes her and banging giant dragon dick constantly for a week straight isn't going to be fun. He bites her clit "hard" without even asking which a) ow and b) isn't something you do without consent because...OW. There's near zero world building and though the gender dynamics are never explored women are dehumanized and patronized the whole book. The writing was functional but every part of this book was abusive, rapey, or otherwise cringeworthy. So why did I spend several hours on it knowing as I did by chapter two that I had zero interest in this series, author, or book? I DON'T KNOW SOMEONE HELP ME UNDERSTAND PLZ

This is Abby's fault. Her updates for this book made me want to read. I'm glad I did, because dragons. Dragons

I liked this book. Interesting back story, good plot, no TSTL characters. It's a quick and short read. I rather wish it'd have been longer as some parts felt too abrupt, but it wasn't a detriment. Mel's reasons for going dragon love slave were admirable and Tristan's grumpy alpha personality is a good contrast to that. The side characters and how Mel helped them made her a more interesting heroine.

Complaints: It's quite sappy. Not in a burn the book way, just overtly sentimental. The author really needed an editor on changing up her phrases. In Tristan's POv, he thinks how he's going to "fuck the shit out of her" and "kiss the shit out of her." She at one point even thinks that phrase. I found the repetition of that phrase annoying.

Good book about dragons.

2,5 Estrellas.

Three and a half
As a reader of paranormal romance I've seen quite a lot of advertising for this series and with its bright eye catching covers it was only a matter of time before I took the plunge. Plus Dragons! Oh yes this was definitely pretty high on my book radar.
Essentially it's the story of Melanie offering herself for six months to a Dragon in the hopes of becoming pregnant . Her payment is a vial of magical Dragon blood that she hopes will cure her dying brother. Very little is explained as to why the Dragons need human females so it could simply be birth rates of Dragon females are declining or even a distinct lack of fertility but for whatever reason Melanie will have the option of staying after her contract expires or leaving her child behind.
Tristan is a broody guy with very little reason to trust or indeed even like humans but reluctantly agrees to step up and try to help perpetuate his clan. His attitude to Melanie right from the start is less than welcoming but his inner Dragon has a completely different opinion of her leaving Tristan well and truly stumped!
Hmm I could see that the author tried hard to make Tristan a jerk but honestly he didn't seem that bad. Melanie is clearly supposed to be strong and feisty but to this reader she just came across as normal but then again I am used to kick ass urban fantasy heroines. I didn't like that Melanie is portrayed as almost saintly as she goes around offering kind words, a friendly shoulder and even a pat on the head( not kidding!) and seemingly being this caring and understanding woman who can do what others have failed to do.
Yet I really like Tristan's Dragon. What can I say? So often shifters have an inner beast that they communicate with but here the author gives us that but she gets down to the nitty gritty. The Dragon has base instincts and doesn't understand subtlety or compromise . He's a bull headed animal that struts about like a demanding toddler ! All he understands is freedom, flight, hunting, eating and with Melanie around the need to protect and procreate! Yes cue many instances of "mine" and frequent rutting!
I do think the ending made this a worthwhile read for me as until then the romance wasn't working for me. Happily we meet the couple about seven months later by then I could believe that they had worked through things and truly found love. It wasn't exactly what I expected if honest but I'm sure there will be many readers who enjoy these Dragons and the situation they find themselves in.

Pedestrian and laughable story and characters

There was literally nothing redeemable about this book.
To save her little brother, she sells herself into prostitution. And of course her parents (whom she loves so much but are never really referred to again) just stand on the front steps of her confinement and pat her on the head as if she won't be dying in the next year.
I did find myself laughing but that was more because of the pathetic writing than because of anything actually entertaining going on in the book.
From the creepy, voyeuristic, stalker "dragon" in his head, to his energy-giving semen, to her "stubborn" streak, it was mundane, boring, unimaginative and I am unable to put into words what a waste of time it was.
Wait, there was a high note: when it finally ended and it wasn't in any way a cliffhanger, making sure there was absolutely no draw whatsoever to read the rest of this horrid series.

Sacrificed to the Dragon was not bad for a Kindle freebie. The story is relatively straightforward, with not much tension or stakes at all.

The characters were interesting enough but the world-building could've been better. Given that there was so much animosity between the dragons and humans, I would've liked to have seen more of a distinction between the two species. It just seemed like a lot of important information was skimmed over. Personally, I also felt like the writing was really lacking in creativity. The book was filled with the same phrases you'd expect from any other romances.

Overall, it was an easy and quick read. Not bad for a freebie...

First time read from author Jessie Donovan. The story was a bit boring for me. I really thought the concept of the story sounded really good but the execution of the story was not.

Melanie (the heroine) just wasn't that exciting nor made the story even interesting. She was lame. I mean her character could of been 10 times from exciting if she would of put up more fight, had same attitude, something, anything.

Tristan's (the hero) character seemed OK but when i had to hear his "inner dragon" talk I was really thinking wtf? Does the dragons even age with their person or they stay 10? And when Tristan and his dragon would talk to each other... Hmmmm. I just couldn't fully get on board with the story.

It was fine … not much unexpected happens in the story. For the plot the book was a little too long and everything came a little too easily for the couple.

Not a bad few hours but I did lose interest about halfway through. An average rating therefore for me

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - for the entire serial!! Awesome and I loved it all :)

Part One
Okay I always start with the things I think people need to know or would like to know. This is a 4 part serial. It doesn’t take long to read this because it is under 50 pages. Serials are not my favorite when it comes to reading; however, I loved reading this one. Considering the length of this, the author did a phenomenal job at showing me this new world and hooking me on the story. It usually takes me 2 or 3 parts of a serial before I really like the world and series.

Melanie is an awesome lead. She is smart and will do anything for her family. She also will not be pushed around by a grumpy prejudiced dragon shifter. Tristan has a past, but I’m sure you read the blurb and know this already.

Part Two
I always review the books I read based on my own enjoyment level, so remember this is like an opinion we all have them, and you don’t have to agree with me :) I was given a copy of this part by the author, but after I read Part One and loved it, I went and bought this part too!! I do this a lot when given a copy.

This is under 50 pages and a quick read. Not sure if this means short story or novella, but really does it matter. Serials are like a TV show where you have an episode worth of stuff going on. That being said some authors do this better than others. I like the way Jessie does it, but still secretly wish it was a whole novel length book because I really like this world.

I really like Melanie as a character, but I like women who are strong and don’t take crap from anyone especially when they are also compassionate and understanding too. Tristan…oh Tristan…one minute I love you and the next I want to slap you, so you are just like a real man :) lol I really like Bram because he is honest and tells it like it is. I really hope this becomes a series of novels because I want more of this world that Jessie has created :) Of course, I do love my shifter books.

Part Three
I’m not feeling very well this weekend, and I decided last night to read in bed. I can’t believe how quickly I was at the end. Things you may want to know, this is a serial novella series. What does this mean? This means you must read them in order or you will be lost. Also this episode is only about 50 pages. I have read several serials now, and Jessie does a fantastic job of meshing them together and stopping at place that makes sense and feels right. You don’t feel like someone slammed the door in your face so to speak.

Okay Tristan is starting to grow on me, and I didn’t want to slap him once in this episode :) Melanie is of course awesome. I love her fighting spirit, but she is also caring and kind. She is the type of female lead I love to read about :) I’m very curious about Arabella, but I haven’t made any decisions yet about what I think about her.

Part Four
Definitely an awesome conclusion to the serial, and I loved every minute of it. Melanie is an amazing woman and my favorite kind of female lead. Tristan is now an awesome man that I no longer feel needs to be slapped.

Jessie is a phenomenal writer who makes the story come alive. I definitely didn’t want it end. I know she has Bram story coming, so I’m happy about that. I just hope we will still get to see my favorite characters from this serial and updates on the family. The Stonefire Clan is awesome and I can’t wait to read more of their adventures, and I’m hoping we will also get to meet other clans along the way too :)

This series is definitely the best serial I’ve read to date. I highly recommend it to all my dragon lovin’ shifter friends out there.

I didn’t go into this with high expectations but even so I was incredibly disappointed. I think the only reason I didn’t give in and DNF this was because it only took a few hours to read and I thought it was about time that I had a one star review to add to my collection. Usually a book this bad would be DNFed and so would not get a rating from me.

I don’t object to reading the occasional romance featuring a dominating alpha male but Tristan didn’t seem to have any redeeming characteristics whatsoever and the author just tried to excuse this by giving him a tragic backstory. The relationship between Tristan and Mel was frankly unbelievable. I didn’t care about either of them as individuals or as a couple.

The sex scenes were unpleasant as well. I presume the author was trying to go for sexy talk but ended up writing dialogue that was cringingly crude. I couldn’t help screwing up my face as I read it and even thinking about it as I write this review has my face doing the same thing. The author came up with the flimsiest excuse ever to have them having sex the same day they met without having to go to the effort of giving them any relationship development, all this did was make me feel uncomfortable. And PLEASE don’t make me have to talk about how dragon shapeshifter’s have magical orgasm inducing semenTM. URGH!!!!

In the end of course Tristan had a complete personality transplant. But by then I already hated him and I just didn’t care. Sometimes a good insta-love story can be a guilty pleasure read for me but this was just badly done. I’ve never dislike a book so much is years, even books I’ve ended up DNFing!!

I would recommend this to NO-ONE, because I did mention the magical orgasm inducing semen aspect right? Thank god this book was free.

Plot ⭐️⭐️
Spice 🌶️🌶️
Dual 3rd person POV

This was a pretty low-stakes (until the end, but even then I wasn't that worried), angsty, chosen mates story that was a pretty decent palate cleanser. Curvy 25 y/o FMC who's smart, witty, and determined to break the stereotypes/bias that the MMC holds while integrating herself into his clan. Our MMC hates humans for hunting and torturing dragon shifters, especially since they killed his mother and tortured his sister. I didn't really feel the chemistry between them and his magic jizz that made her cum immediately was a little too much for me (I say this as I'm reading a dragon shifter book lol).

Since it's in the blurb, it's not a spoiler that she almost immediately gets pregnant and of course human women can't have an epidural because the babies would die and they also have a high maternal mortality and of course our FMC has twins and almost dies all while wanting her babies to live even if it means she dies. These human women are "contracted" to come stay for 6 months, hopefully get pregnant, hopefully live through the birth, and then can either stay to raise the child or leave.

So I'm a little bit disappointed when the only human woman that was pregnant who was fine with leaving her baby behind (who was also shafted by the guy who knocked her up and was severely depressed and just wanted to go home) died during childbirth. It was barely mentioned as an afterthought while our FMC is in birth, hoping she doesn't end up like Caitriona and die while giving birth. I just don't love the rhetoric that this is giving. Obviously this whole book is about getting human women pregnant to keep the dragons from dying out but I just feel icky about how much human women have to sacrifice in order to do that. The author literally makes the rules and having the high maternal mortality makes no sense. She could've just said it was getting harder for dragons to mate with other dragons and needed human help. This pro-birth part just makes me feel gross. Idk I'm just ranting at this point.

This was still pretty entertaining and, like I said before low stakes, so if you ignore the epilogue with the pro-birth endorsement at the end then you may like this.

Where to start?

I'm okay with the idea of maybe picking up clues to what went sideways with this world. But there was no real world building here. Not enough crumbs of clues as WHY things are they way they are here. We're plunked into a world where the government is aware that dragons exist and young fertile women are allowed to sell their bodies to the dragons for baby making purposes.... For the going rate of a vial of cure-it-all Dragon blood.

We're given a hero who, within a couple of lines, is described as an alpha. *eye twitch*
You don't say... And here I thought he was just grumpy. Ugh. Please. SHOW ME, don't TELL ME.

But that's all okay. After all, I'm not here looking for high literature. I'm here for action! Romance! Smut!! Surely this can deliver?

Yeah...

Well...

How's this? One second our hero is preparing to do something dangerous, next page we're dealing with the consequences. What did I just say about showing vs telling? what the hell just happened? I don't know! Did anyone see?! No? I know! We gotta wait for someone to wake up and tell us what happened, in as few words as possible and as little emotion as possible. *eye twitch*

I was really hoping that at the very least we'd get good smut. Surprise! The hero was having conversations with his "Dragon self" during the act that boiled down thusly:

*Naughty words for body parts*
" No, dragon-half, we can't scare her! "
"But I want *more naughty words for body parts!*"

Okay, so not nearly that infantile, but you get the idea. Couple that with magic orgasm triggering semen and for funsies, biting parts of the female anatomy not meant for biting.... Great smut. *SMH*

It was free on Amazon which is the only positive thing I can say other than a last second mention of a first kiss that actually held some promise. Le sigh. I wanted to like this. Really. It was sheer determination not to put another book on DNF status that made me finish.

But it was free!
No, dragon-half, it was still not good!
But rawr free!

This was a good start to a nice series, and while the book was edited well, I was disappointed with the flat characters. Most of the other characters were minimally developed and I was disappointed in that. I also wanted to know more about what being a dragon shifter was like, we got minimal description on that as well. The relationship between Mel and Tristan was good, the development there was good as well, and we saw how they were falling for each other, however we didn't delve below the surface with either of them, we know that Mel is strong, and stubborn but caring and we know that Tristan is alpha male and stubborn as well. They are a likable pair but I found myself wanting more. At times I also felt some dialogue was a bit too cheesy, which I've come to expect from these kinds of series. Overall it wasn't horrible but it wasn't omg fantastic either. However I am interested in the rest of the series and I might continue it when I'm in the mood.

This was free on ibooks, and amazon recently.

So right off the bat let me admit to some trepidation. It sounds very PWP (plot what plot) erotica, not romance. But it won me over due to Melanie and later Arabella. Donovan builds the world and while it doesn't sound tremendously different then modern times, its fascinating how dragons were fit in.
