Take a rousing romp through 1790s England with this first of four Properly Spanked novels…
The Lady Aurelia has been promised in marriage to the Marquess of Townsend since she was four and he was fourteen. Unfortunately, she grew up into a pillar of propriety while her betrothed grew up into a renowned rake. Of course, no one would expect such an unsuitable match to go forward…which is why they find themselves at a loss when circumstances force them to the altar and into each other’s arms.
Hunter, the beleaguered marquess, believes he’ll survive the uneven match by continuing to frequent his well-trained coterie of whores and courtesans, but Aurelia’s powerful father has other ideas. When he blocks Hunter’s access to the only women shameless enough to cater to his decadent needs, the marquess informs his new wife that something will have to be done.
That “something” will be the immediate commencement of her erotic training…whether she wants it or not.
This 70K word novel contains acts of punishment and discipline, anal play, and other sensual practices.

Annabel Joseph is a NYT and USA Today bestselling BDSM erotic romance author. She writes mainly contemporary romance, although she has been known to dabble in the medieval and Regency eras. She is recognized for writing emotionally intense BDSM storylines, and strives to create characters that seem real--even flawed--so readers are better able to relate to them.

The heroine behaves as one thinks a sheltered lady would act during this historical period. The hero's actions - he's a sadist - may upset certain readers while he trains the wife who feels sex is a violation and barbaric. Due to the setting, this did not upset me, although there are a couple moments where I felt uncomfortable. As they resolve issues the romance blossoms, mostly on the part of the hero, which I appreciated. The ending was a miss for me, although there is an HEA. It felt rushed and there was a line I wish hadn't been nearly crossed. (BDSM, spanking/switch, anal sex, rapey situations)
I'm uneasy about this one. The premise sounds really good, but the hero is so forceful and the heroine so reluctant it comes across as abusive. There are no discussions or reassurances and her protests are ignored.
I can't help but think what Kingsley or Søren would do to a man like Hunter.
I’m an absolute huge fan of Annabel Joseph, I’ve enjoyed every single story I’ve read by her, some more than others sure, but I’ve never read one of her stories and not enjoyed it. So this time I was really worried going into Training Lady Townsend as I’ve not read many historical novels. I can probably count on one hand the total I’ve read. The synopsis intrigued me though and I was in the mood for something different so I attacked it with excited anticipation. Can I just say the cover does not do the story any justice, so if you’re a cover snob like me and don’t like people’s faces on your covers, don’t let that stop you from reading this one, you’d regret it. You’d be missing out on a funny, sexy and erotic historical. I haven’t read anything really in this genre to compare it to, but I don’t think there’s any need really. It was brilliantly written as I knew it would be; I loved the characters; one feisty and stubborn the other a complete cad. And the setting, well, I loved the aristocratic British-ness and I now see ginger root from a whole different perspective….ouch! Oh and Berkshire….very close to my heart!
‘Damn the Duke and his godforsaken moral compunction. Not only was he saddled with an ice cold wife, now he had no outlet for his more perverse desires. It was an impossible situation.’
I have to say I found Hunter absolutely lush; what a character. He was cheeky, controlling, sexy and arrogant. Beneath that though, he had a heart that just hadn’t found what it was completely looking for. It knew what it wanted and under what terms but it hadn’t found its match. I have to admit he had me in stitches of laughter at times; this over the top larger than life aristocratic toff who just didn’t give a toss about propriety and social standings.
‘This was a pathetic display of fellatio, but she was submitting to him in a way he never imagined she would.’
Hurrah, how refreshing to have an innocent virginal heroine who doesn’t seem to surprisingly excel and be the best ever at every sexual act in the book (pun intended). No ‘first timer’ best he ever had in this story. How original!
‘He’d spent a decade training a coterie of women to cater to his sexual tastes, and he wasn’t going to throw them all away because a forced marriage to an uptight prude.’
Lady Aurelia, bless her quiet strength, she did not have a clue what she was in for in this arranged marriage and I felt incredibly sorry for her during the ginger root scenes. Is this really a historical truth? If so, hurrah for modern inventions because, ouch….again! She was so sweet, delicate in nature and dare I say it, emotionally reserved. The way in which she’d been brought up she never stood a chance. But they do say you should always watch the quiet ones.
‘She didn’t know how to feel about him. She didn’t know how to feel at all.’
She was brilliant and fully came into her own once she went through a self-discovery and found what lay beneath her manipulated persona. Sure, at times I felt sorry for Hunter, hahaha yeah go figure, but I understood her reservations and incredulity at her situation.
‘She wanted to scream…but she’d never been allowed to scream so she didn’t know how.’
The way these two dealt with their arranged marriage was quite romantic, hot and humorous. It’s definitely the most light-hearted erotic read from Annabel Joseph in my opinion, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and will definitely continue with this series. Hunter’s ‘gang’ were brilliant too and I can’t wait for their stories. You’re in for a romp-tastic ride!
**Reviewed off an ARC copy provided by the author with thanks**
I am glad I read the book, though I'm no fan of spanking or domestic discipline. Because the author writes well compared to many others of this genre. This series is much milder compared to her other dark erotica book or so the reviews hint. I much prefer the emotional abuse/cruelty to the physical kind so that's wasted on me. I just skimmed some parts.
I wish this wrote some 'normal' romance minus the abuse and smut. I'd love reading more from her.
I'm struggling to rate this book, because it really was a compelling and well written story. Despite the fact that it's an Erotic Regency Romance, with the expected larger than life aristocratic fantasy, I was rather deeply moved by it. For some reason Aurelia's situation made me feel rather sad, but unlike several other reviewers I didn't see Hunter as an entirely selfish, arrogant character either. These two were really in an awful situation and the blame could be put solidly on their parents and society.
The reason Aurelia's situation struck me as so sad is that she wasn't just a young woman of her society who was told sex would hurt and she would just have to put up with it. That is bad enough, and has been a horrible disservice to women and men for generations (not to mention the basis for many lovely scenes in historical romances). Aurelia was made to feel she shouldn't get any pleasure from her husband, and if she did there was something wrong with her. To me, that would be much more difficult to overcome than just being shown the joys of making love by a patient husband. On top of that, her husband wasn't just someone who enjoyed giving and receiving pleasure, he had tastes for activities.... well, I'll just say he was really kinky!
There were several "training" scenes that were rough and it wasn't easy to like Hunter at those times. What I found particularly difficult to understand is that Hunter knows how Aurelia feels, he isn't oblivious to her pain and the difficulty she has submitting to his demands.... but it doesn't change how he treats her during training.
Annabel Joseph does an amazing job setting out all these nuances, but doesn't quite resolve them. For example, the cognitive dissonance Aurelia feels between her upbringing and her body's responses isn't really resolved, and I find that failing in the story to be frustrating. Well into the book, during a dinner with Hunter's friends, she still feels sullied by the things she and her husband do even though she realizes she doesn't entirely dislike them. Even Hunter starts to feel guilty for the things he's had her do in order to give him pleasure. I would have liked to know a bit more about how the two of them would proceed, whether compromises would be made or not. That may have made their mutual professions of love for each other a bit easier to believe.
Leave it to Annabel Joseph to write an utterly adorable Historical Domestic Discipline novel. Seriously adorable!
This was a fun, quick read for me. I loved the characters. Loved watching Hunter and Aurelia grow and evolve within themselves, and also in their relationship. The pace was quick and it flowed so well I lost track of time.
I picked up Training Lady Townsend because I was hoping for a fun historical and naughty spanking romp of a story. Well, there was definitely spanking involved, but it certainly didn't seem like a lot of fun at least for the heroine, Lady Aurelia.
While I liked that Hunter did fall in love with his wife and taught her how to laugh and enjoy life, there were other aspects that I didn't enjoy that much.
After his father-in-law's machinations, the only option for Lord Hunter to take care of his specific sexual needs becomes his wife. So he decides to take on her erotic training so that she can satisfy his varied sexual appetite. I had no issue with that. I'd say that's making the best of the situation.
However, the way he went about it was first misleading. After Aurelia disobeyed him on their wedding night, he spanked her as punishment. Yet, when this so-called training commenced, he spanked her before every encounter. He explained the reasoning but to be honest, I just didn't get it. I don't think Aurelia got it either, but she submitted to it anyway.
I don't like how he introduced things so abruptly to her - everything from oral sex to getting birched for the first time and even getting up and close with the use of ginger root to help prep her for a specific sexual activity. There was just the most basic of explanations without any real prep or even giving her a chance to voice concerns or ask any questions. If you're going to train, be a teacher. Explain what you're doing and help the pupil understand what's being done and why.
But then I think that was the point. Hunter didn't want her to really have a say. He knew that Aurelia was strictly raised to follow what her father told her to do and even think. That was to Hunter's advantage because he used that to exert dominance over Aurelia.
Perhaps, if the so-called training took on a more sensual erotic tone with some elements of humor, that would have been more appealing. But it didn't feel so much a training as more of an "assault".
Perhaps, if the heroine seemed to get more enjoyment out of all the preliminary and painful foreplay , that would make this a better read. Instead, at the beginning of each sexual encounter, she would protest and the internal dialogue she has with herself expresses how painful the spankings and the birchings are. Yes, it's referenced that she does get sexually aroused, but I just didn't believe it.
It feels more like she bears the pain only because she's trying to please her husband, not because she's actually getting any initial enjoyment out it. Her payoff comes later on. I'm glad that she at least gets her big "O" in the end.
In the end, this book just did not do it for me, especially since I think the hero deserves a spanking more so than the heroine.
I must confess I am not an avid Historical romance reader. Not for any particular reason….they just don’t seem to cross my feed very often, but when I do read them….I ABSOLUTELY love them. The era, the beauty, the simplicity of life, the clothing, I could go on and on….for me, I just love imagining life back in the day.
When Annabel Joseph announced she was writing a series of Historical spanking books, I was thrilled. Anyone who follows my reviews knows, Annabel is my girl…she writes it, I read it, I love it, I gush about it. I had already read her wildly successful Disciplining the Duchess a while back, so I knew that she could most definitely write this genre and Annabel is an author who gives such attention to the details of her books. Whether it is about the cirque or the odalisque or the movie industry or even a period novel, she gets it right. Whenever I am reading her books, I feel as though I am totally immersed in whatever world her characters are living in.
Training Lady Townsend is the story of the betrothed marriage of Hunter and Aurelia. As I imagine most marriages from that era, these two did not want to be married. Hunter was a man about town….even though he was from aristocracy and wealth, he had a reputation for being a manwhore (not sure what that term was back in the 1700’s). Aurelia was pure as the undriven snow and in love with another man. As their marriage begins, Hunter puts down the law of the house….the law that what he wants he will get and if Aurelia doesn’t obey the law, he will crack the switch on her bottom until she does.
I loved the progression of this story. Hunter really was a dick for a good portion of this book, but when they finally start to learn how to live with each other and make a go of their marriage, I just couldn’t help falling in love with him. Aurelia was spunky for that era and I liked seeing her grapple with the things Hunter was doing to her and vacillating between liking it or not liking it. The romance was beautifully written and the sex/spanking/discipline was off the charts hot.
I am so glad Annabel took me back to this era. I loved seeing the tamer side of her writing and Training Lady Townsend is filled with all the same angst and romance and dominance and submission that makes me love Annabel’s stories so much. Of course for me, one who loves to read about anything relating to the backside, this book was perfect and Bravo Annabel, you have successfully created another BBF for your twitter girls to fight over! Once again, Annabel proves why she reigns at the top of my erotic authors list with this 5 “you can spank me Hunter” stars read!
I'm not into BDSM, I didn't particularly care for the sadistic hero and some of the scenes in this book were way out of my comfort zone, but... I liked the setup, the writing and the sheltered heroine who discovered her inner kinky side in the spanking hands of her her initially unwanted husband. So... I liked this book! I am shocked! ;)
Enjoyable read for spankophiles. Historically, Regency era, much is accurate...many men were like Hunter, Lord Townsend; rakes and hellions were terms for young, male, rich, free, gambling, and sexually active men with appetites for kink and debauchery, often sexually diseased wretches too. However, they usually wanted purity, naivety, and submissiveness from a wife to be. Lord Townsend preferred the sexually experienced woman and was not at all happy to be coerced into an arranged marriage, where their fathers, two powerful dukes, determined to cement their families fortunes by the betrothal of their son, Hunter, from age 14 to the young Lady Aurelia, when she was still only 4 years of age. These alliances happened. The ruling aristocracy brought daughters up to be prim and proper, and as ignorant of the acts of procreation as possible. Aurelia, nicknamed Lady dormouse by Hunter and pals, finds herself reluctantly married to Lord Townsend.
The Lord Townsend at the start, I disliked, no way did I think I would change my mind about him. Yet, I did. I was initially angry that he should use punishment and insistence of his husbandly conjugals, disregarding totally how scared and innocent his new over-protected wife was. Over time, and seeing her initial bred taught responses that young ladies shouldn't like sex or have sexual feelings, gradually broken down by a mix of spankings that changed from punishment to erotic, and seeing her start to blossom as both a person and sexually, and realising his feelings for her changing, I grew to like him as husband material, and her as somewhat emancipated woman, though her reaction to what she called and thought unnatural acts was amusing...as I also thought such once many moons ago. So know how life and experiences changes people, and I enjoyed how things panned out. I'm hoping there will be a cameo for this couple as we see the life changes of the other three young rakes that Annabel has written about in her Properly Spanked series. And yes, I want to read the series.
Negatives, nitpicking only; it can be difficult sometimes as society changes to know what was normal then...Annabel, no way would they have cleared there picnic tea items, they would never have given such a thought...they had servants who dealt with all their needs, including picking up after them, such was life for each social class, and strictly scripted. The other, if you had mentioned alfalfa in Great Britain of that time, a blank look would have been received...in fact, it probably would still be by 80% of the population here now! Silly niggle I know, but I am firmly in favour of if you write about another country, get some knowledgable natives of such to do a read through first, they may pick up on these items. However, this is of much better quality and knowledge of Regency Britain than Disciplining the Duchess was.
This is very different to many of Annabel's style of books, so Mercy, Cirque du Minuit, Mephisto series, being serious BDSM stories, this is more BDSM-lite with corporal punishment and dominance, though I'm sure being birched wouldn't have felt like BDSM-lite!
Regency fans who also love erotic spankings will love this sexy story. Our heroine was brought up to be given to a Duke for the purpose of breeding. This is true to form back then, marriage was a business transaction rather than for LUVVVV. Lucky for her (but a bit of a shock too) our heroines new husband is a kinkster! I adore a good regency romance, and I adore BDSM erotic. This book is the best of both worlds. Annabel Joseph has been out there writing for a long time and boy can she can write. If you haven't tried one of her books, this may be the one for you.
It was a very fun story, as all stories from Annabel Joseph. I liked how Hunter helped Aurelia enjoy life and have fun, though he was an asshole about things from time to time... Aurelia ended up being a great heroine, confident in herself and in what she wanted. They had their small misunderstandings, but in the end they TALKED and resolved everything. I think the time period wasn't chosen that well. This straight laced were mainly the Victorians from what I know, but since she doesn't go into detail about the time period it doesn't really matter. All in all, the love scenes were well written, Ms Joseph has a great imagination in using all available "instruments", the main and supporting characters are people who have the same problems that we do(more or less) and I can't wait to read the next books in the series.
I put off reading this for awhile because spanking is not my kink. The series title is not deceptive, there is quite a bit of spanking in this book - but there was also a character-driven love story which held my attention. For those who enjoy historical erotica, particularly with domestic discipline or spanking--this is a good read. This was a very close 4 stars for me. I will be reading the next book. I'm interested in Warren's story.
I really need to not read any 'domestic discipline' books...
Aurelia and Hunter, betrothed since childhood, reluctantly find themselves with no alternative but to marry. She's pathologically shy and extremely modest, and she finds the wedding night nearly unbearable. Hunter's kinky, and really isn't interested in vanilla sex with a woman who can barely tolerate him. However, he decides that since he no longer has access to his paid companions, then he'll 'train' Aurelia to serve his needs....Ack.....!!! But gradually they find themselves warming to each other, and eventually Aurelia discovers the big 'O', and Hunter gets an enthusiastic partner for his erotic play.
However, I'm not really sure I ever really warmed up to either of them. I kept waiting for Aurelia to grow a backbone, but she never does...It's Hunter's realization that he likes her and cares about her that starts to change the dynamic between them. And Hunter's no prize either. I felt he was arrogant and remote, despite his affection for Aurelia.
So I guess I really, really need to not read books with a fragile, wilting heroine who is transformed into a sensual siren by an arrogant, remote hero.
Totally different from the usual Annabel Josephbooks that I have read, but an enjoyable different. I used to read a lot of historical romance so to find it laced with kinky goings on is an added bonus. Easy reading and very predictable(like most HR) I give it 3.5 stars rounded to 4 for GR.
Fairly good but not as good as Under A Duke's Hand by the same author. This hero was a bit annoying with his compulsive need for sex and I hated the fact that he had to be banned from brothels by the his father in law. He did fall in love with the heroine before she fell in love with him though and he told her first. His friends were very entertaining and I'm glad I read the Duke of Arlington's story first, because that guy is the hottest among the the 4 friends in this series.
Finally finished the Properly Spanked series! Only Annabel Joseph can make a short story feel so expansive and complete. I really enjoyed Hunter and Aurelia's story. It's one of my favourites of the series, which overall I quite enjoyed except for My Naughty Minette. Aurelia is a bit of coward, nicknamed Lady Dormouse, but she does come out of her shell, while Hunter's softness towards the end was so sweet.
In the beginning it's steaming hot! Like oh-my-my-panties-are-getting-wt hot! ;)
But as the chapters went on I felt like slapping Lady Townsend and found myself facepalming. I have never been able to deal with pathetic heroins and so maybe that was why this book did not work out for me.
Aurelia never once stands up to her Lord Fucking Townsend. Instead when he spanks her, every freaking night might I add, she chooses to sob out "it hurts!". Then five minutes later she starts talking about how she was secretly falling in love with him. facepalm
He only gives her respect when he wants to, if that's what you want to even call it. And meanwhile he expects her to be his docile little sex slave. I mean I'm good for a small spanking to arouse both partners...fine. But she cries, she whimpers, she fucking sobs like HELL and he just sits back with a smile enjoying the hell out of it.
It was just a pathetic book as a whole. I never managed to finish it so maybe it turns good in the end but I seriously doubt it. She just doesn't have any...spark. And he's sadistic little prick who thinks all wives should obey their husband in a timid fucking way.
I mean I like me some erotic romance...but this was out of hand.
So if you like these kinds of books...well more power to you I guess. Overall, it sucked horribly for me and just made me want to cry when Aurelia cried. Two stars at most.
Spoiler Ahead This was a really good book. Lady Aurelia was promised to Lord Townsend when she was four years old and he was fourteen. Lord Hunter Townsend doesn't want a wife he doesn't want to give up his man whoring ways that he and his three other friends indulge in. They call her Lady Dormouse and he doesn't even know what she looks like the night of the ball where it will be announced that they are engaged he tries to seduce another girl to marry turns out he gets the right one only she tells him she is in love with his friend Lord Warren. This was a really good book Aurelia is a sheltered girl who grew up obeying her mother and father and thinks the things that Lord Townsend want to do in the bedroom are wrong. When her father puts an end to his whoring ways like not being able to go to the brothels to get his kink on he was no choice but to train his new naïve wife in the ways of his kink. Lord Townsend loved to spank his wife and he uses it to train her to like all of the things that he likes in the bedroom. This book was hot and very erotic and I really liked the scene where he put the ginger in her anus the first time. As Aurelia learns to submit to her husband in the bedroom she also begins to come out of her shell she learns to laugh as she was always told it was unladylike to do so. While teaching his wife Lord Townsend realizes that he has fallen in love with her and she him. When his friends come for a visit he realizes that his wife still has feelings for Lord Warren and he gets jealous when his friends invite him to a masquerade party where everyone is getting there freak on. Although he tells his friends no Lord Townsend takes his wife anyway so she can see that other people do the things that he does to her and to show her what Lord Warren is really like. This was a really good book this is not my first time reading this author. The book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series about Lord Warren.
Not sure how I feel about this one. I suppose that the depiction of a ton marriage is accurate, who to the wife dreading marital relations. But it is also off-putting, and felt pretty rapey at the beginning. They do fall in love, and he does introduce her to kink, which she comes to love, I'm just not comfortable with the power imbalance.
I might have found new favourite kind if story - historical romance with a dash of kink. Absolutely loved this one. Aurelia the “proper” young lady & her absolute rogue of a husband Hunter. Wowsa those 1800s were a dirty time.
As always I love Annabel Joseph and her wild sexy crazy imagination! This is not really the type of book that I am accustomed to read am not really into historical romance; but really I quite liked it I thought it was very sexy and romantic thinking back to those times were ladies and gentlemen had to behave a certain way or they weren’t considered a lady. So this brings me to lady Aurelia she is certainly something. I love her character she was very strong minded in her beliefs and did not let Marquees Hunter change any of that, of course with a good spanking that he gave her she definitely couldn’t resist anymore to change her way of thinking.
Marquees Hunter is a total alpha hottie super dominant and likes his women to obey his every word. I thought though he was very adorable at times and he really cared for Aurelia. He has a dilemma with lady Aurelia due to how they brought her up she is very stiff and believes that such sexual depravity’s a lady such as her should not do , so Hunter must train her into the women he thinks will suit his needs and this is were the fun begins.
I thought the whole storyline of the book was pretty awesome although like I mention am not really into historical romance it was pretty hot!!! The picnics they had not only were they super sweet but also very kinky, and let me just tell you that here I learned that ginger is not only used as a way to put flavor in your food. I also really enjoyed how they would do almost everything together , and how they grew accustomed to each other and there kinky ways. I would definitely recommend it if your into historical romance and even if your not it was a funny kinky sexy read loved it.
3 never knew people back then could be so kinky st
