When we arrived at the State Department for charm school, we started out in the same briefings, but after a few days they separated us. While the future ambassadors went off to classified briefings, spouses received instruction in how to run a residence. Markos had no interest, to put it mildly, in table settings and name tags. (95)
Markos had been great about taking on more responsibility for the kids, but I knew he would not accept any home improvement assignments. I would have to deal with the house later. (18)Add to that the fact that her husband, now that Eleni Kounalakis's job was going to define their lives for the next few years, suddenly insisted that she switch to using his last name... (I'm reminded a little bit of something Hillary Rodham Clinton said, perhaps in Living History? It's been a long, long time since I read it...anyway, she mentioned seeing no reason to change her last name...until it became important for Bill's political career, because voters might not be 'comfortable' with a man whose wife had kept her last name. This is different, obviously, but it still sort of feels like we haven't come that far in some ways, doesn't it?)
