William's Whimsy

Rate this book
Dear Author,
I know this is a difficult task, but you may be just the person to take it on. Write a contemporary, HEA, double gay-for-you. What makes this a challenge? Well gay-for-you is always a challenge, and a double-gay-for you has been done very well by a select few. But these stories are dynamite.

See these two guys in the flannel shirts? Well, this isn’t insta-love, but they are taken by surprise by the growing attraction, and it causes them to question who they are. The ramifications are different for each one. What will make this story fun and hot is how they get to the HEA. Awkward situations, soul searching and above all, believable based on their characters. The old miscommunication thing is not as interesting as internal conflict. Maybe they’ve been friends for years? How do they ease into the physical side of the relationship? Or maybe they don’t ease into it, who knows.

Photo Description:
Two formerly straight young guys holding hands… the distance between them showing a fledgling relationship with some uncertainty and hesitation in their affection… the clasped hands indicating the desire for connection and their attraction to each other… will love conquer social and family expectations?

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love’s Landscapes" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

This story may contain sexually explicit content and is intended for adult readers. It may contain content that is disagreeable or distressing to some readers. The M/M Romance Group strongly recommends that each reader review the General Information section before each story for story tags as well as for content warnings.

Susan Beck is an irreverent middle-aged woman who was being confused with another author of the same name ... so ... with much fanfare ... Beck Mitchell is the name I will be publishing under from now on ... to continue my story ... she has too many children; a warped sense of humour; and a husband who doesn't want her to use her real name when writing porn. You can usually find her ignoring the housework whilst reading her kindle with a coffee close by.

To everyone who has asked for the rest of the story, I'll put it at the top of my to-do list ... once the womb fruit are back at school I'll delve back into the story and see if I can get it to you earlier than promised.

For those people who have asked about other stories...

The Lennox Boys are getting a book to fully explore their relationship ... let me just say that their adventure is never dull and everything that could go wrong, nearly always does.

I have 'The Boy with the Lotus Tattoo' 70% written ... a wee tale about a masturbating teen and his love for Jake Bass.

I'm writing a 5 book series about men with disabilities finding love ... there is a wee bit of kink in some of these stories and my resource for all things BDSM is being very generous with the 1001 questions I pepper him with.

There is a spoof shifter book in the works too ... brace yourselves for the Werekoala with a dash of mixed up magic.

I am also writing a slightly darker-themed story about domestic violence but that one is proving hard to write.

Finally, I have nearly finished a story about a lesbian who falls in love with a transvestite ...

As you can see, I have difficulty concentrating on one project at a time ... toss in 5 kids, and I'm surprised I finish anything.

I will definitely reread this book once the author decides to publish the what happen after part of this tale of innocence. And I am talking about the very much wanted second book.
To tell you the truth I never ever expected to like this story and selected it as its a short story but was shocked to read such a heart felt story.I literally wriggled my nose seeing a mouse on the cover and reading about a MC William having rat as a pet gave me shudders but the friendship of William and Josh had me swooning in no time at all. Both of them were vulnerable in their own way.
Susan Beck Big Cheers to you and I am anxiously waiting for the next book.
Highly recommended read!!

First of all, I should mention that not only am I a friend of the author, I am also a moderator for the Love's Landscapes event.

That said, the only thing stopping me from rating it 5 stars is that it is an incomplete story; when the final version becomes available, I'll happily rate it so then.

For me, I have no doubt that it is the author's intrinsically Australian style of humour and writing that makes it so appealing to me. The dialogue is very real, and I can clearly see the humourous scenes taking place, especially when it involves four Aussie males, a game of footy, beer, a fart, and a rat - a pet rat, that is -- I laughed out loud.

Having met the author in real life, and hearing her family's experiences with pet rats (or fancy rats, as they are known), I can imagine that many of the scenes are based on real life. Ask the author about one of her family's pet rats winning the "Most Adventurous Rat" award at a local pet show, and Darktan's behaviour is tame in comparison!

Definitely a story worth checking out while the final product will be worth the wait.

As the author's note points out - this is the start of a story which will evolve into a longer novella.

Told in first person POV by Josh, a self described antisocial emo, who with his police office brother has moved to a small town and is starting work at a local small grocery shop. One of his first customers is William, and his rat, Darktan. William doesn't speak - must due to a brain injury at some point in childhood - and appears to have a very isolated life and extremely innocent. Josh decides to take it on himself to give William the sex education he's missing - by having them watch American Pie - after which Josh finds himself becoming physically attracted to William.

This was a cute story, but there were a couple of issues that kind of niggled - particularly surrounding William's brain injury and the behaviour he expibits... and the excessively well trained rat (mine never were, no matter how hard I tried... let lose outside they'd just bugger off not follow obediently... hell even my dogs won't do that most days...) I am sure there is a significance of the new edition of the clawpedia character that looks like Josh .... but if it turns out William is something to do with it then there will probably be eye rolling for obviousness!

Soo, this one has me bouncing back and forth.
I was bored out of my mind with the game talk...that's just my thang. I'm not a gamer and my eyes glazed over during their game talk/game night/game obsession.
And yet, it was sweet that it was their passion and a link that pulled them together.
I know it was a set up for a longer novella, but *growls* sometimes cliffy's drive me batty. I wannnna know now!

Josh is emo but he kinda fails at being emo.
William is mute and severely sheltered.
Older bro Seth is hilarious.
The Aussie slang and vibes were fun and new...I rather enjoyed them.
Darktan gives me the willie's but again, I found it oh-so-sweet that Josh cares for every part of William. Including his beloved pet rat.

~An emo boy orphaned, being raised by his older brother plus a mute boy also orphaned, living with his grandfather.
~Double-gay-for-you.
~YA.
An interesting mix and certainly not for everyone.
But damn, I really want to know what happens after...that kiss.

*3/3.5 love-is-love stars*

Disclosure first of all: the author is a friend of mine, and I'm involved in the event.

Having said that, Susan Beck has a style of her own. No-holds-barred, down-and-dirty and unashamedly Aussie in both slang and syntax. And this story is no different. I love her style. It's a refreshing change from some of the cookie-cutter books that you find at times in this genre.

While I would have liked to have had a longer and complete story, I appreciate it not being rushed or have a happy ending tacked on for the sake of a HEA. I'd rather wait and be able to fully immerse myself in their story and read a full length story.

I had trouble to warm up with the MCs. To be honest I stayed around because I liked the rat. Part of it were simply boring. Too detailed and too pointless for the story.
Didn't work for me. Plus the WIP thing is always annoying for me.

This was a good beginning of a story. It is ‘To be continued’.

This first part, we meet our ‘couple’, William and Josh. Josh moved with his brother Seth to this new town. He works at the local supermarket, where he meets a regular, William. William, due to an accident he was involved in years prior, is unable to read/speak. He doesn’t have any friends and many people treat him as a child instead of an adult because of his disability, not Josh.

They become fast friends, and they do a lot together. I am on the fence on calling this a ‘gay-for-you’. I’ll have to read more before I can conclude my opinion. Josh has dated girls, but has never had any romantic feelings(sexually attracted to) anybody before. That is until William. I am unsure about William. The whole story is told in Josh’s POV. We do find out about how sheltered William has lived. No TV, never received the ‘birds and the bees’ talk, etc.

Well, perhaps some of the next part will be told in William’s POV, so we can have his inner thoughts on everything.

Short, promising start to a novel the author wants to publish in 2015.
I find stories where one or both MCs suffer some severe disabilities are difficult to write. There is only a small line which, overstepped, leads into the realm of taking advantage or even abuse the weaker link in the relationship. This story teeters along this line because we don't know much about William apart from him being mute and obviously having a memory problem which comes up only once. Apart from that he seems totally normal. The question is how this story will further evolve - it could go both ways, good or bad. Anyway, I'd be interested in reading how the story evolves on the condition, that William will be explored/explained more as well.
Kudos to the author to choose such a difficult topic (disability).

I really enjoyed this one - it's a "to be continued" kind of ending though, so I'm now eagerly awaiting the next part.

One slight confusion was that I either missed their ages early on or they weren't mentioned, but a lot of the time I thought they were a lot younger than they obviously were with some of the descriptions of what they got up to. But then I noticed late in the story that it was mentioned that William was in his 20s and was surprised.

However, it was a really interesting story, immediately engaging, the characters were likeable and it was FREE! :D

I.Loved.This.Story. A sweet, moving story of the developing relationship of strangers who become friends who are on the way to becoming so much more. Loved the humor and particularly appreciated that one of the young men faced difficult communication issues, watching the men work to overcome this hurdle was heartwarming. I am looking forward with great anticipation for the rest of the story, I need to know what happens. Oh and Darktan? What a tremendous and important part of the family!

Argh! Another "to be continued" story. That was the theme for this year's collection.
I took off one star for that.
Otherwise, I loved it and could not find any faults.
