Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.
I read The Hound of the Baskervilles many years ago and loved it, but I hadn't read any of Doyle's short stories. While some were slower than others, I found myself thoroughly enjoying them all and my family seemed to enjoy hearing me try to guess the ending over dinner.
Though I have been struggling to find time to read with so many responsibilities and other things to distract me, listening to the stories read by the podcast 1001 Sherlock Holmes Stories & The Best of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was so relaxing after a long day. The narrator does a great job and I love how he used slightly different voices for each character.
The only thing I didn't like about these stories was how Doyle gave in to social pressure to bring Holmes back. It definitely cheapened "The Final Problem" for me. I mean I love some of the ones that came after but... weak bro.
Definitely recommend trying this collection and I would love to get my hands on his other stories!
Favorite stories: - The Final Problem - The Hound of the Baskerville - The Adventure of the Copper Beeches - The Empty House This is my first time reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes. I’ve always love the tv and movie adaptations so I was very excited to read these stories! Holmes and Watson chemistry is so endearing and every story has a special combination of mystery and fun.
Since I'm very busy with school it took me a lot of time to update and I was really inactive. It actually took me five days instead of three that it would actually take me because of school and problems.I've had like a thousand years to update that though so it looks like it took me a month.Anyways...
Sherlock Holmes has to be one of my favorite characters in the world. He's a genius,he knows what he's doing,he knows exactly what to say to whom and who to trust,he works alone but he always accepts and even requests Watson's company and he's basically what you can call:sassy. I really liked the short stories that I read and the Hound of The Baskervilles.I also have a favorite but I don't remember its title right now.The mysteries were perfectly woven,a complex plot in every single short story and I adored all of them.I wouldn't have guessed what Sherlock did in two days,in a million years.I totally recommend that you read them and be mesmerized.
Update:My favorite story was "The Adventure of The Speckled Band".
Update No2:I also loved the movies with Robert Downey Jr and I ADORE the BBC show with Benedict Cumberbatch.I can't choose though which actor looked better as Sherlock.Maybe Benedict but do I prefer Benedict as Sherlock or the real illustrations?I don't know. What about you people?Anyways, that's all I have to say.Next book to read "How To Be Bad" by Mylnowski,Lockhart and Myracle.
A handy collection of short stories featuring the world's greatest detective. This volume is beautifully bound and well constructed. I keep this edition at work for those times I find myself in need of a fix.
