The perfect husband. The perfect house. The perfect lie.
When waitress Olivia meets charming, wealthy Lachlan Gibson, it seems too good to be true. A fairytale wedding. A magnificent house in the beautiful town of Rosford. Freedom to pursue her passion for painting.
Everything she ever wanted.
But beneath the surface, something isn't right. Lachlan has some strange rules for his new wife. There are unsettling accidents which don’t seem random. And disquieting whispers about what happened to Lachlan's previous wife, now deceased.
Olivia begins to suspect that her dream man may have a sinister agenda, that her perfect new life might actually be a carefully designed cage.
But it’s so much worse than that. As Olivia digs deeper into her husband's past and discovers the terrible secret he has been hiding, she finally understands she may lose everything – her freedom, her sanity, even her life.
The Last Wife – the chilling psychological thriller, perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Nicola Sanders, John Marrs.
Matt McGregor is a writer of psychological thrillers. Before becoming a writer, Matt taught English, ran a nonprofit, worked with maps, and worked in tech startups.
Now, he mostly spends his time inventing surprising ways to murder his characters, which is totally fine and nothing for you to worry about.
When he’s not writing in the third person, he likes to explore the local wilderness, swim in the sea, and play with his exhaustingly energetic young children.
In this thriller we meet Olivia a struggling individual trying to get by, while stuck in an abusive relationship. One day, she meets Lachlan, a man who's says and does the right things...who wouldn't fall in love with a guy like that..But soon Olivia realizes the grass isn't always greener, on the other side.
I love a good husband and wife thriller. I thought this book held a great pace. This book has kept me on my toes. Not knowing who was friend or foe was fun. When you're an avid reader, you can tell where the story is heading. I loved that this book kept me guessing
Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator books for the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of The Last Wife by Matt McGregor. This was a quick read with a storyline that keeps you hooked. It had a great pace and was well written. There were no senseless plots / murders happening throughout the book. Everything was calculated and done with purpose. I have not read any other books by this author but I will look for them now. I would recommend this book to others and I gave it a 4 star rating.

The Last Wife follows Olivia as she uncovers her perfect husband is not as perfect as she thinks, he can't move on with his ex wife and would do everything to bring it back. I love how even though this "perfect marriage" trope has been done soo many times already, this one put a little bit of a twist to it. Lachlan's character and the how he only thinks about Yasmin is well established in here and his actions actually makes sense to his motivations, it's one of the few thrillers where you understand the reasons why someone would do such a thing, what thing? You know when you read this. This book doesn't just write unnecessary murder since for the sake of a mystery, it's a greatly written story! All the characters are memorable, even the side characters too! And those other characters truly add more complexity and more substance to the already successful story. I'm definitely looking forward to read more books of this author. And i hope that this book will be prosperous and have the great success it will be in the thriller genre!
this was a really quick and easy thriller to read. from the prologue, the story immediately hooks you in, and i found it hard to put the book down! there were no major twists, and i did find the story to be a little predictable, but i still enjoyed it all the same. the husband, lachlan, was such a red flag (if you read it, you'll know why). i do believe some things were left unanswered as i still had some questions at the end. overall, recommend if you're looking for a fast-paced thriller!

Very good read and perfect for fans that enjoy domestic thrillers. Young and desperate, Olivia escapes one hell for another, as she gets out of an abusive relationship and ultimately marries a complete narcissist. Lachlan was completely delusional and a forced to be reckoned with. This is definitely a typical story of ignoring the red flags, yet you still root for Olivia the entire time. My first read by this author, but I will definitely be reading more, as I enjoyed the writing style. It was well paced and kept my attention throughout the entire story.

The perfect husband. The perfect house. The perfect lie."
The Last Wife by Matt McGregor is a domestic thriller packed full of suspense, secrets, twists and deception.
Olivia is a struggling artist working as a waitress while she pursues her dream of becoming a well known painter. One day, after meeting Lachlan, her dreams just might have come true. Lachlan is wealthy and handsome and has completely swept Olivia off of her feet. Months later they get engaged and Olivia is living her best life with all she could want and more. But soon Olivia learns more about Lachlan's ex wife who passed away. The ex wife that Olivia is convinced that Lachlan will never get over. With Lachlan's strict rules for the house and the rumors about his late wife ringing in her head, Olivia begins to question whether she really knows Lachlan at all.
The "perfect marriage " trope is one of my faves and The Last Wife did not disappoint!! With a slow infusion of unease and dread, you can't help but to keep reading! I loved the atmospheric setting layered with a a sense of rot when it comes to life in Rosford. Olivia as our protagonist works very well. Going from nothing to ending up with everything but still darkness seeps into the cracks of her marriage, you root for Olivia and find her relatable. Definitely a must read for fans of tension filled thrillers and readers of Nicola Sanders, Lisa Jewell and B.A Paris!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Matt McGregor, and Inkubator Books for this ARC!! Publication date is May 25th 2025.

Thank you to NetGalley, Inkubator books and the author for this eARC of The Last Wife in exchange for my review.
The last wife is about a struggling artist, Olivia, who is a full time waitress, trying to make it for herself when she comes across Lachlan, a rich man looking for love. She is swooped by him immediately and they are married within 6 months, then Lachlan gets weird…. He seems like he’s a raging control freak, is this the man Olivia fell in love with?
I breezed through this book in a day, it is a very easy read, in saying this it has a very similar plot line to many thrillers and you can tell how the book is going to play out by a few chapters in.
Olivia is trapped in an abusive relationship, waitressing to get by when she bumps into Lachlan. He's rich, charming, good looking..and on a date. He swoops into her life and whisks her off her feet, but the red flags are flying! He's way too good to be true.
A fairytale wedding, her own painting studio and whatever she wants, whenever she wants. Who wouldn't jump at that. No need to work, a personal trainer, hair dyed every couple of weeks...its almost like he's trying to make her something she's not.
Of course Lachlan has secrets and isn't Mr Perfect. It wouldn't be a thriller otherwise. Olivia is naive enough to get in too deep. The cracks are widening and it all comes crashing down. Fast paced, quick thriller. Definitely add to your list.
The Last Wife follows a woman who escapes years of abuse, only to find herself entangled in another dangerous relationship.
This was a fast, easy read that pulled me in right away, but the ‘thriller’ part never really thrilled, there was no big twists and everything played out exactly as expected. The characters stayed pretty surface-level, which made it harder to connect with them.
Overall, it’s a solid, easy thriller for when you want something fast-paced, but it didn’t leave a lasting impact for me.
At first, Olivia thinks she’s hit the husband jackpot—Lachlan is rich, charming, and hands her a paintbrush and a dream life. But this isn’t a fairytale… it’s a trap with throw pillows.
McGregor’s writing is fast, smooth, and oh-so-twisty. Olivia’s slow slide from dream life to what the actual hell is gripping, and every page tightens the tension. The pacing? Relentless. The characters? Creepy-good. And the twists? Let’s just say I gasped out loud (more than once).
If you love domestic thrillers with sinister secrets and gutsy heroines who won’t go down without a fight—The Last Wife delivers. Big time.

This book reminded me a lot of the ending of the housemaid and the things the husband made his wife do in the book, but it followed a different story line which made it exciting and thrilling all in its own. I felt such a strong sense of hatred towards the MMC and was fighting along with the FMC the whole time. I couldn’t put the book down from when I picked it up after work today because I needed to know how it ended!! A good thriller to me is one you cannot sleep without finishing. There were of course the unexpected twists a couple I predicted a couple I did not and I love the unexpectedness of it all, I would 100% recommend this short thriller to any thriller lovers and am excited to read more of his work.
was immediately pulled into Olivia’s life. I was really concerned for her in her first relationship and felt wary about Laughlin. I hoped something good would happen to her. I liked the contrast between what her life was like before and after in terms of material things.
She is really talented with painting and I liked how she used it to relax.
Her cat is cute.
Is Laughlin really serious about her or is he wanting to mold her into a replacement for his previous wife?
The Last Wife has very good visuals and emotions. It made me feel concern and unease. It’s very atmospheric. The pacing was very good.
Thanks to Matt McGregor.

This was one of the best paced thrillers I’ve ever read. Seriously! Which made this a super quick read because I needed to finish this book.
Could I relate at all to the main character? No. Yet I was enthralled in her story, in her life. The writing was captivating and this was simply a book I literally could not put down.
Obsessed. I can’t wait to read more from this author!
Thank you to Inkubator Books for the eARC via NetGalley. The cover, the blurb, the cover, the story… PERFECTION!
I will definitely be recommending this book to anyone + everyone.
Firstly, Thankyou to NetGalley and the Author Matt McGregor for the ARC of this!
But let’s just say I was hooked throughout the whole entire thing, even my friend (who has not read a book EVER), read a few pages halfway through and was super invested and kept asking what’s happening to Olivia?
This was such an easy read, and the writing was brilliant. This won’t be my last Matt McGregor book for sure!
I recently received and read an ARC copy of The Last Wife by Matt McGregor from NetGalley.
Olivia, a waitress in New York, meets a charming and handsome Wall Street man named Lachlan.... He sweeps her off her feet, and before she knows it, they are married and living in Rosford. He wants to have a baby right away, but Olivia wants to pursue her art career, and soon things are not as perfect as she thought they were........
As Olivia begins to see, hear, and find out the dark secret her new husband and town are keeping from her, it may be too late.
This book was a total trip for me. I'm not much into thrillers, but I could not put this one down. I was in awe of how they fell in love so fast, but don't all romance books start like that? I soon read as fast as I could to find out what was happening, and I discovered all the secrets along with Olivia. I usually pride myself on being able to see a twist before it happens, but Matt kept it hidden until the very end: an amazing read and even better ending.
Thank you to Netgalley for letting me read this book.
The Last Wife by Matt McGregor was a real page turner. With short, punchy chapters and a writing style that’s easy to breeze through, I found myself flying through the book in just a couple of sittings. It hooks you right from the first chapter and doesn’t let go.
The characters were compelling, and the whole story gave me major Stepford Wives vibes a seemingly perfect neighborhood, perfect house, perfect husband… and of course, the perfect wife. But beneath the surface, things are far from perfect.
While I found many of the twists and turns somewhat predictable, they were still well executed and held my attention throughout. This is a solid domestic thriller with a chilling undertone that lingers.
⚠️ Trigger Warnings: This book includes depictions of physical abuse and may be sensitive for expectant mothers.

4.25✨ superb, i liked the book. i loved the idea of him making her become his wife who died like who fuxking does that? a psychopath fr. it was a good concept and it was well thought out in my opinion, the fact that they were in a small town full of rich assholes really added to the story lol. yay for lydia surviving
Wow, what can I say except wow. It has been a long time since a book has had me completely enthralled. I couldn't put this book down, there were times when I had too. I didn't resonate with the lead female character, but I definitely understood her actions throughout the story. This book has a certain charm, that slides into unease and switches to terror really quick. Its like sleeping with the enemy mixed with fatal attraction.
The author makes it very clear from the start, that everything which glitters is not gold. If you want a read that is in depth, leaves you craving more, and genuinely makes you turn the page in anticipation, this is the book for you. Lachlan is a very likeable character, and Olivia has a certain charm that grows on you, but don't get comfortable in who you think they are. Trust me when I say, you will not regret picking this read up, because you won't want to put it down.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
As others have noted, this was a quick and easy read—I finished it in a day. I enjoyed the story, though it felt familiar and reminded me of other books with similar themes. There weren’t any major twists, and the ending played out much as I expected.
Overall, it’s a nice choice for a fast, holiday read.
First, I wish to thank Netgalley, Publisher Inkubator Books and Author Matt McGregor for the advanced e-copy of The Last Wife.
The Last Wife is a fast-pacing thriller that throws you into the universe within the first chapters. The world and character building progressed with the pace of the story and this was the perfect palate cleanser.
I actually read from chapter 8 and finished the book in one sitting, not really noticing the time spent as I followed the story and the progress. I will be following Matt McGregor as he continues to write and publish.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The pacing is great and it's a quick easy read. It definitely kept my interest, but I did feel like the latter portion of the book, the story went off the rails a bit and I didn't enjoy it as much as I did the first 75% of the book. I would definitely check out another book by this author. This was a solid thriller. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Okay… The Last Wife kind of made me want to throw the book across the room — but in the best possible way. Matt McGregor knows exactly how to pull you in, twist the knife, and then leave you sitting there in stunned silence, questioning everything.
This book is a domestic thriller with teeth. It's messy, emotional, and tense in all the right ways. The characters are flawed (some painfully so), the pacing keeps you hooked, and the twists? Let’s just say I gasped. More than once.
Did I want to strangle half the cast? Absolutely. Did I keep turning pages anyway because I needed to know what happened? Also yes.
If you love thrillers that push emotional buttons and keep you on edge — even if they make you a little mad — this one’s worth a read.
This is my second read by this author and I have to say that although I did enjoy The Makeover, I much preferred this read.
This sets off at pace right from the prologue and I was hooked instantly!
I love the perfect marriage trope and you just know that such perfection is never going to go well.
Although I've read a fair few similar themed books, this one did seem unique in some ways and this had me racing through the pages to find out what was going to come next!
I felt sorry for poor Olivia - seemingly having everything she ever wanted - but I also feel like she maybe should have seem something in Lachlan before getting too sucked in!
He was definitely waving some flags for us the reader!
This writing style was easy to read and I liked how the atmosphere was set and put me on edge throughout.
I really didn't trust Lachlan - but at the same time we can also see where his motivation started.
A great read and I will definitely be keen to read more from this author in the future.
📚 ARC Review: The Last Wife by Matt McGregor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5 stars)
The Last Wife pulled me in from the very beginning and didn’t let go. I found myself flying through the pages, constantly trying to piece together the mystery and dying to know what would happen next!
The FMC was an absolute standout for me. I loved how she carried the story with her strength, intelligence, and determination. She wasn’t perfect, but she was real—and I was totally rooting for her the entire time.
This was my first book by Matt McGregor, and it definitely won’t be my last. If you’re a fan of thrillers that keep you on your toes with a smart, resilient female lead at the center, this one’s worth picking up!
✨ Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
