Guadalupe Nettel
37 books1,660 followersGuadalupe Nettel (born 1973) is a Mexican writer. She was born in Mexico City and obtained a PhD in linguistics from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. She has published in several genres, both fiction and non-fiction.
Nettel is a prolific author and a regular contributor to both Spanish- and French-language magazines, including Letras Libres, Hoja por hoja, L'atelier du roman, and L'inconvénient. In 2006 she was voted one of thirty-nine most important Latin American writers under the age of thirty-nine at the Bogotá Hay Festival.
She has lived in Montreal and Paris, and is now based in Barcelona, where she works as a translator and holds writing seminars and a workshop on Potential Literature (based on the French Oulipo). Ya sé que nunca es tarde, pero ¡qué pedo!, ¿por qué no había leído este libro antes?, estoy encantada, hasta siento que será una buena semana.
Una vez un señor me dijo que el libro era bueno, pero que de inmediato se notaba que Nettel había encontrado una fórmula y que nomás se repetía. Uta, pues si esto es repetirse. Ajá, los animales, las relaciones, las marcas de tiempo, el discurso científico-explicativo y, pues obvio, la similitud. Me parece un acierto más que una falla. Para mí más bien genera una unidad, una atmósfera, universo, etcétera ya saben.

Es difícil innovar en el género de los relatos, sobre todo cuando hablan de temas cotidianos como el amor – o falta de – la maternidad o la infidelidad. Pero creo que Nettel lo consigue, con historias sencillas y que fluyen serenamente pero al mismo tiempo están bien construidas y establecen paralelismos sorprendentes con el mundo animal.
Los peces rojos, los hongos, las cucarachas, los gatos o las serpientes irrumpen en estos relatos como inesperados protagonistas y nos hacen preguntarnos cuántas cosas tenemos en común con ellos y si su existencia es en realidad más simple que la nuestra – o no.
La felicidad, la persecución de la dicha – tan a menudo infructuosa – está presente en todos los cuentos, con decisiones a las que nos enfrentamos continuamente y que ignoramos a dónde nos conducen. La narración es fluida y poco artificiosa y se lee sin esfuerzo alguno.
A mí me ha resultado interesante, pero son historias lentas así que si alguien lo encuentra aburrido, pues también lo puedo entender.

Com esta coleção sobre o mundo natural, Guadalupe Nettel, venceu o Premio de Narrativa Breve Ribera del Duero por unanimidade, mas não me conquistou, ainda que tenha gostado de ouvir a própria Nettel a contar estas histórias. Tal como nas obras que li anteriormente, “O Corpo em que Nasci” e “La Hija Unica”, esta autora mexicana dá muita ênfase à maternidade com todos os seus desafios, mas em alguns dos contos passa a fronteira do fisicamente revoltante.

Leer este libro reafirmó mi amor por los cuentos. Me encantaron tanto que quiero releerlos y observarlos con más atención, descubrir las cosas que no noté, y observarme a mi, y las nuevas cosas que sé que me harán sentir.

Tutti gli animali sanno di che cosa hanno bisogno, tranne l’uomo.
Siamo un po' come i pesci Betta splendens, viviamo insieme al nostro partner pur sapendo che la convivenza ci porterà al confronto,allo scontro, alla lotta e, in alcuni casi, alla "morte".
Altre volte l'unione di una colonia di scarafaggi ci mette di fronte ai più comuni conflitti familiari.
Prendere decisioni sulla nostra vita ci sembra sempre troppo difficile, se poi riguarda la maternità ancor di più. Dovremmo imparare dai gatti, loro si che sono in grado di decidere.
Funghi e vipere messe in parallelo a relazioni extraconiugali.
Un parassita e un morso letale che cambiano la vita di chi viene a contatto con loro.
Quanto siamo simili agli animali che vivono con noi? Quanto ci rispecchiano nella quotidianità?
Come dicevo all'inizio però loro sanno di cosa hanno bisogno, noi no o almeno ce lo nascondiamo.

Guadalupe Nettel (Città del Messico, 1973). Questa raccolta di racconti, pubblicata nel 2013, è uscita lo scorso anno da noi col titolo di Bestiario sentimentale (trad. Federica Niola). Sono cinque racconti formidabili, nel senso più stretto, spaventevoli (con stile) per più aspetti, non ultimo la bravura dell'autrice. Il primo racconto, "La vita matrimoniale dei pesci rossi", comincia così:
“Ieri pomeriggio è morto Oblomov, il nostro ultimo pesce rosso. L’avevo intuito da diversi giorni, nei quali l’avevo visto muoversi appena nella sua vaschetta rotonda. Non saltava più come prima neanche per ricevere il cibo o per seguire i raggi di sole che rallegravano il suo habitat. Sembrava affetto da una depressione o da un male equivalente nella sua vita di pesce in cattività. Sono riuscita a sapere pochissime cose su questo animale. Pochissime volte mi sono affacciata al vetro della sua vaschetta e l’ho guardato negli occhi e, quando è accaduto, non mi sono soffermata a lungo. Mi faceva pena vederlo lì, da solo, nel suo recipiente di vetro. Dubito molto che sia stato felice. È questo che più mi ha rattristato ieri pomeriggio, quando l’ho visto galleggiare come un petalo di papavero sulla superficie di uno stagno. Lui, invece, ha avuto più tempo, più calma per osservare Vincent e me. E sono sicura che, a modo suo, anche lui ha provato pena per noi."
Per chi volesse farsi un'idea qui allego un racconto splendido (Ptosi) di Guadalupe Nettel, contenuto in un'altra raccolta, altrettanto bella (Petali), vi si descrive la passione di un tale per le donne che hanno le palpebre asimmetriche. In tutti i racconti di Guadalupe Nettel c'è un animale, una pianta, un tic strano, un'asimmetria che caratterizza i personaggi e li svela.

Que lujo leer a Guadalupe Nettel, y la pregunta del millón es ¿porque no lo había leído antes?
Estos relatos son impresionantes y los he amado todos, muy en especial “felina” que me dejo al borde del llanto porque igual amo a los gatos lo que me llevo a darme cuenta de lo fácil que es para esta autora llegar hasta el corazón de los lectores y es que los eventos cotidianos los convierte en pura magia literaria.
“Los peces son quizás los únicos animales domésticos que no hacen ruido. Pero estos me enseñaron que los gritos también pueden ser silenciosos”
Estos relatos son impresionantes y los he amado todos, muy en especial “felina” que me dejo al borde del llanto porque igual amo a los gatos lo que me llevo a darme cuenta de lo fácil que es para esta autora llegar hasta el corazón de los lectores y es que los eventos cotidianos los convierte en pura magia literaria.

In genere amo leggere libri non particolarmente lunghi per evitare di perdermi nella narrazione soprattutto in presenza di trame particolarmente articolate. Nel caso di questo Bestiario Sentimentale, alla fine della lettura mi è dispiaciuto che fosse finito che non ci fosse un'altra storia da leggere e a cui appassionarsi.
È straordinaria la narrazione di queste vite, di umani (e animali), che si incrociano, si intersecano si sfiorano, si ri-prendono; storia intense di amori che hanno una loro 'vita' che inevitabilmente è destinata ad esaurirsi, storie intense che possono solo in minima parte essere gestite, canalizzate, accompagnate lungo il loro tragitto.
Gli animali non lo sanno tutto ciò, vivono le passioni, gli amori (per i cuccioli), le lotte coi simili
solo seguendo il loro istinto; l'essere umano sa che tutto quello che nasce dovrà finire e ne viene inevitabilmente condizionato.
La Nettel riesce a 'raccontare' storie intense con una delicatezza e una serenità più unica che rara, una lettura che delicatamente traccia solchi nell'animo del lettore.
È straordinaria la narrazione di queste vite, di umani (e animali), che si incrociano, si intersecano si sfiorano, si ri-prendono; storia intense di amori che hanno una loro 'vita' che inevitabilmente è destinata ad esaurirsi, storie intense che possono solo in minima parte essere gestite, canalizzate, accompagnate lungo il loro tragitto.

Dec 14, 230pm ~~ When I recently read On The Plain Of Snakes by Paul Theroux, I was intrigued by a few of the many books he mentioned during his narrative. I ordered a couple of non-fiction titles, and two short story collections by this author, Guadalupe Nettel, who was one of the writers taking a course Theroux taught while he was in Mexico City. All of those students were already published authors, hand-picked ahead of time for the class, and Theroux considered them the best people he met in Mexico.
The idea behind these stories seemed intriguing to me and I was curious about how the author would talk about interactions between humans and animals. Turned out that all the stories were a bit surreal, dark, fairly depressing, and sometimes just plain weird. Nicely written though.
The characters in each story identified closely with certain animals in their lives, from pet fish to cockroaches, from cats to a snakes, even fungus. The woman in The Marriage Of The Red Fish noticed that her life was reflected in what was happening to the two Siamese fighting fish she and her husband had received as a gift. As her marriage fell apart, so did the life of the two fish. This was the first story, and the best for me.
I could not read War In The Trash Cans because it dealt with a boy who went to live with an aunt when his parents divorced. In the aunt's house he feels invisible and learns to hug the walls any time he roams the house at night, which he does in order to avoid the family. And then one night while in the kitchen getting something to eat he sees a cockroach.
And I had to quit. I did not want to know what would happen between this boy and the bugs. Nope, just cannot handle bugs, especially that type of bug. Not that it is a phobia, it is just that I prefer not to fill my head with images of cockroaches. Or scorpions. Any other bug I can pretty much deal with, but not those two!
So I skipped to the other stories, but by then I was not as caught up in the book as I was at first. I became especially frustrated with Fungus, which was weird, disgusting, and depressing. I suppose I just am not as interested in such anguished tales as other readers and literary critics might be. The author has won many awards in the literary world but I think I am a bit more down to earth and prefer a different outlook on life that the one on display here.
I am looking forward to the other Nettel collection (and hoping they will be lighter) but I won't be keeping this one.

Es un libro de cuentos en donde la autora se sirve de diversos animales a manera de metáfora, para describir actitudes o situaciones de los personajes, y cómo en momentos similares, a diferencia de los primeros, las emociones los llevan a incurrir en decisiones desacertadas e irracionales. La propia autora señaló en una entrevista que: “Los momentos decisivos de la vida –el nacimiento, la conquista de la madurez, el apareamiento y la reproducción, la enfermedad y la muerte– son vividos por los animales con absoluta madurez. Sin embargo, nosotros, a pesar de nuestra capacidad para razonar, nos enfrentamos a esas experiencias con una extraordinaria torpeza”.

Očekivao sam priče koje su poetički radikalnije, pa i misaono hrabrije. Nije Gvadalupe Netel bez talenta, ali iznenađujuće je kako saodnos ljudskog i životinjskog malo gde ovde prevazilazi antropocentrizam. Sve priče su ovde, tako, o disfunkcionalnim odnosima, koji su poput ogledala za odražvanje naših potajnih osećanja. Ribice, insekti, mačke, zmije, ali i gljivice (koje nisu biljke, već posebno carstvo živih bića, uporno ponavljam!), učestvuju u ovoj književnoj igri prenosa, koja izuzetno podseća na jednu priču Jelene Lengold iz zbirke „Vašarski mađioničarˮ o bračnom paru i kastraciji mačke. Prevod Ane Marković je nenadahnut i deluje da bi mogao da se utegne. Ipak, ima ovde i oštrice i dobrog narativnog jezgra, sa moćnim neizgovorenostima i podzemnim tokovima, samo što bi sve to moglo da bude još bolje. Ukratko: nije nezaobilazno, a može da bude interesantno – ionako nema mnogo priča, pa, ukoliko jedna funkcioniše, neko može pažnju pokloniti i ostalima.
I da, ukoliko ikada budem imao akvarijum opet, jedan žitelj tog staklom ograničenog sveta, mora se zvati Oblomov. Ko pročita prvu priču, saznaće mogući razlog.

Obviamente no me ha impresionado tanto como al jurado del Premio de narrativa breve Ribera del Duero. Aun así, el relato del adolescente y las cucarachas me parece muy bueno.
(Quienes se hayan sentido atraídos por lo del «cruce de caminos entre el mundo animal y el universo humano» pero luego hayan encontrado estos relatos un poco aburridos tal vez apreciarán más Crímenes bestiales de Patricia Highsmith.)

Obviously, I’m not as impressed by these short stories as the Ribera del Duero Prize jury was. However, the one about the teenage boy and the roaches is pretty good.
(For those whose interest was piqued by the promise of animals acting as “mirrors that reflect the unconfessable aspects of human nature buried within us” but then found this stories a little dull: maybe The Animal-Lover's Book of Beastly Murder by Patricia Highsmith is more your thing.)

Guadalupe Nettel no decepciona. Sólo había leído su novela 'La hija única', que me fascinó así que no dudé en adquirir esta bella edición de cuentos.
Perdí la práctica escribiendo reseñas, pero puedo decir que este libro se siente refrescante, no pretencioso, muy humano, real y profundo a pesar de ser bastante breve (cinco cuentos en 120 páginas).
Mis preferidos en orden fueron 'Guerra en los basureros', 'Hongos', 'El matrimonio de los peces rojos', 'Felina' y 'La serpiente de Beijín'.
La autora nos habla de temáticas universales y transversales como las relaciones de pareja, la maternidad deseada y no deseada, el sentido de pertenencia y el deseo, entre otras. La observación y la propia experiencia de las y los protagonistas con seres vivos no humanos, dan paso a reflexiones que asemejan sus vidas a estas otras vidas que forman parte de su cotidianidad.
Súper recomendado. Es una lectura súper ágil, lo devoré en una tarde, así que creo que ya quiero releerlo y también seguir conociendo a la autora.

Primer libro del año. Que lujazo.
Nettel tiene muy buenos remates y maneja gran contundencia en los cuentos de este libro. Se agilizan a medida que uno avanza y te dejan estupefacta.

Encontrar las semejanzas con el reino animal y aterrizarlas en etapas y emociones del ser humano es lo que logró Guadalupe con esta serie de cuentos.
No todos están bien logrados, hay algunos que carecen de un clímax explosivo y reflexivo, caen totalmente en lo absurdo.
En libro es bueno y entretenido.

Me gustó la forma en la que escribe Nettel, ha sido bueno conocerla sin embargo, presiento que esta no es su mejor obra... De los 5 cuentos, me quedo únicamente con 2.
Nettel ha tenido ideas bastante únicas pero las analogías entre los animales y los seres humanos a veces se leen muy forzadas, hubiera deseado algo más espontáneo y menos predecible.

So wonderful. Such a satisfying, compelling read. This book speaks to you as a person sitting across the table would. With sincerity, simplicity, and shared empathy. The stores are complete in themselves and do not leave you the limbo-like sensation many others of this literary style often do.
The theme of this book is deceptively simple and yet terribly fascinating. The also looks at the Natural Histories of living organisms; from cats to snakes to even fungi and draws a parallel in the lives of the characters that inhabit the pages. The writing has a thoughtless elegance that comes with a voice that knows itself well. It is sparse, and yet gently moving, introspective and insightful.
This book is one of the underdogs that I've come across this year and it would be a pity to miss it.

Guadalupe Nettel ha una “voce” sua propria data da uno stile semplice ma efficace nel raccontare con sensibilità le vite al bivio dei suoi personaggi e, in questo caso, dei loro animali che fanno da specchio alle loro emozioni. Sembra quella vecchia amica a cui puoi raccontare tutto perché mai ti giudicherà o sminuirà le tue pene.
Una bella raccolta di cinque racconti che si legge velocemente ma lascia il segno. Dopo La figlia unica mi ha definitivamente conquistata.

Este es el tercer libro que leo de Guadalupe, y siento que todavía me falta mucho para considerarla de mis autoras predilectas. Pero sin duda va por buen camino. Me gustaron todos los relatos en esta antología, pero creo el primero (de título homónimo), fue mi favorito.

Finalmente encontré algo que me gustó de Nettel, a excepción del último, todos me dejaron con cierta sensación de desolación y me encantó la relación que cada uno tiene con un animal o el fungus , con diferentes situaciones como la maternidad, la infidelidad, la ruptura, etc

Nettel has a strong narrative voice and an ability to craft compelling stories. Each of the five stories in this collection revolves around animals, or nonhuman lifeforms of some type—fish, cockroaches, cats, fungus, and a snake. Each piece is quite different, but all feature people (or couples) who become dissatisfied with life for some reason. My favourite was "War in the Trash Cans" but there is not a weak piece here.

Quante cose si possono condensare nello spazio di un racconto! Guadalupe Nettel ha una grande capacità di mostrarci alcune cose che non funzionano, che hanno a che fare in primo luogo con la corporeità, le emozioni e i sentimenti, e qui lo fa mettendo in gioco un parallelismo con altri organismi, animali o funghi, in un modo che va oltre la metafora, arrivando sino a una sorta di simbiosi, quasi a restituirci quella "normalità" da cui comportamenti, convenzioni e situazioni allontanano.

Con una meravigliosa serie di racconti G.Nettel dispiega nei più svariati modi l'animo umano e le sue fragilità nel sottile confine che lo separa dal mondo animale. La scrittura dell'autrice é delicata quanto i sentimenti umani che descrive. Cinque storie da leggere tutte d'un fiato.

Sin duda Guadalupe Nettel se ha convertido en una de mis escritoras favoritas. En este libro corto, pero intenso en sus relatos nos lleva a entender las acciones humanas a través de la conducta de los animales. Un encuentro estre especies y una reflexión de nuestros conductas menos comprendidas.
