I am honestly so annoyed with this book, I went into this looking for a little bit of hilarious fantasy romance, something I've been addicted to for the last month and came out throughly pissed the fuck off.

First of all, the book centred around Vicky, who after her husband dies, decides to go on an arctic circle expedition and there begins her many idiotic decisions.

I am all for self-discovery and solo adventures but Vicky, as a woman in her late twenties seems to hold the same level of maturity and decision making skills as a prepubescent teenager. Being too shy to seek out another member of the expedition, Vicky decides against the safety regulations put in place by the guide and runs off into the wild with no experience in search of the natural wildlife; in particular FUCKING POLAR BEARS?? Honestly there were so many similar situations where Vicky seemed to just lack any lick of sense, her character was a sheep following the (aggressive in most cases) instructions of near strangers without a second thought.

I understand that the author was trying to create a character who had suffered from degree of domestic abuse (hinting that her ex-husband had drunkly 'cuffed' her on occasion and continuously mocked and beaten her verbally down about her weight and physical appearance), but there is a difference between a character suffering from some type of social anxiety/extreme shyness and having absolutely no personality. Honestly as a person who suffers from anxiety it was frustrating to see how she was portrayed, having absolutely no personality or warmth (honestly she acted like a bloody imbecile most of the time) when she was suffering with her 'shyness' which all miraculously disappears after she spends a few days with Gene and falls in love with him?

There is also the issue that Gene was said to have PTSD but the only symptom he suffered was anger about the past and blaming others? I know this isn't meant to be a serious break through novel on metal health or anything, but my issue is author's using mental illnesses without authenticity to further a plot. There was no mention of Gene suffering depression, flash-backs, night terrors, anxiety or other of the many issues. It seemed that certain symptoms were picked and then once it tied into the plot, it ceased to exist and Gene no longer seemed to suffer.

Gene, the polar bear shifter was the most frustrating character. He would continuously scream, yell and bark at the obviously (but frustratingly) timid Vicky and then lose his shit when she flinched away from him. I honestly can't even comprehend what was going on there, the whole situation drove me mad.

The entire mystery plot twist about who was after Vicky for her money was so blaringly obvious from the beginning it just further annoyed me. Paired with the fact that Vicky fainted at any sight of danger or heightened emotions left me with a bad taste in my mouth, what I hoped would be a fluffy, light-hearted romance story just ultimately flopped for me.

"I can’t give you what you need.”
"And what do you think I need?”
“A relationship. A home. A life without chaos.”
“I’m not asking for those. I just want to feel close to someone.”
“And you’re choosing me?” An incredulous note crept into his reply.
“I know it’s crazy. I barely know you, and we’re such opposites, but…” She trailed off, suddenly hesitant about revealing so much to him.
“But?” he queried softly."
She let out a soft sigh. “When I’m around you, you make me feel alive. And safe. You make me want…” She swallowed. “You."
Loc. 45% Gene and Vicky, Polar Bared

When I knew this story was about Gene, the vengeance-crazed hurting polar bear shifter, I was nearly expiring with impatience to read the story. I mean like if I was interrupted in my reading by a kid, hubby, postal carrier...I'd make Gene look like one of those cute Coca Cola Christmas Polar bears. I know some of you people feel me on that one. But where was I, oh yes, Gene's story in the Kodiak Point series. Gene comes in as a guy grabbing hold of his villainy and not letting it scramble away from the stronger instinct to protect and...cuddle? Yes cuddle when he's near a certain cute, curvy human who lurvs her polar bears even ones that any self-respecting human should run from in terror.
“Where are your glasses?”
She shrugged. “Lost. How did you know I wore some?”
“You squint, Pima.”
“Pima? My name is Vicky.”
“I know what your name is. But I choose to call you Pima. Pain in my ass.”
“Well excuse me, Nobody,” she sassed back with the first ounce of fire he’d seen in her.
Loc. 650 Gene and Vicky, Polar Bared

But as geeked as I was to get Gene's story, I discovered that learning who his special lady was kept me equally fascinated. One would expect the villain and cold-hearted, revenge-seeking killer of the first two books to earn him someone equally lethal like Jan the Arctic Fox and her gun collection, but no it was better and more subtle than that. He got his opposite and just what he needed. Vicky was adorable and such a breath of fresh air and happiness into Gene's dismal life. Her big attraction was that he finally found not only someone to accept him just as he was, but the way she really needed him in all things and that he could appreciate her finer traits through all her bumbling made them a perfect team. Vicky got sick at the sight of blood. Vicky froze at the presence of danger. Vicky passed out when she got scared and life around Gene meant a lot of passing out.
It didn’t take eyes in the back of his head to know Vicky watched. Vicky feared. Oh, and judging by the thump he heard, Vicky passed out. Good, it would make what Gene had to do next a little less traumatizing. To her at any rate. Loc. 1201, Gene, Polar Bared

This book offers not only a cute and passionate love story, but it has some pulse-pounding action moments too. It seems Gene and Vicky have drawn the lotto in the enemies department with both of them having a target on their backs. Good thing Gene, the trained military expert or Gene the huginormous polar bear could protect what was his. Though the reluctant help of old friends doesn't hurt.

As to the main story arc, the 'Him' is still out there with Gene figuring out just one more dangerous thing about the hidden, shadowy enemy even while he and his friends ready Kodiak Point and its people for the attack they know is coming. Things still have a ways to go for the final confrontation.

All in all, paranormal romance lovers really need to get busy and try these while its just three books in. It was the usual fun, dangerous, passionate and adorable journey that one usually finds when they pick up one of Eve's books.

My thanks to the author for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 Stars! "Polar Bared" Kodiak Point #3 by Eve Langlais is the third book in this series. Here we have a sweet love story, one I was so excited to read. This one is about a revenge seeking polar bear shifter, Gene and the adorable, geeky, curvy human woman he can't seem to get away from. A perfect example of "opposites attract."

Without giving too much away , I need to say Gene was set on a journey of revenge, not caring who was in the path to it. We meet Gene for the first time in "Kodiak's Claim," book one in the series. Gene makes another appearance in the second book as well, "Outfoxed By Love." When I found out the third book was his story, I was already plotting where to hide and lock myself away. If you think Gene was an angry character, try getting in my way when I'm in my "Oh damn I have to read this now! Stay the Hell away!" mood. There are some books that just need to be read that way.

As bad tempered as Gene was, he had a near instant soft spot for Vicky, his "Pima." (Sorry you'll just have to read for yourself to find out where that nickname came from.) No matter how many times he came to Vicky's rescue (she needs plenty of rescuing :)), Gene keeps pushing her away.

Unsuccessfully!

Gene has revenge to plan and the last thing he needed was a distraction in the form of his adorable, geeky Pima.

Vicky was in danger. Not from Gene, although he'd argue that she was. The danger that follows her isn't even from the continuous attacks to Kodiak Point. Vicky has her own trouble following her. And while that danger is in addition to the Kodiak issues, Gene must put his plans for revenge aside to protect Vicky. Will Gene ever take a chance on the love Vicky wants to give him? Will he put away his need for revenge and let himself be happy? Gene was a complex, tortured character and I completely understood why he felt the way he did. I understood his actions and I forgave him for his past evil deeds.

Vicky was adorable, quirky and she made me laugh out loud. A wealthy widow with no real friends or family. Her fascination with the arctic, particularly polar bears, brings her in close contact with Gene. Or should I say, Gene's bear. Vicky was afraid but there was also the factor of awe and wonder that she came so close to the bear and wasn't eaten. Vicky was funny. She was also caring and compassionate. Vicky easily fell in love with Gene despite his gruff and grumpy nature. She loved him before she knew he was a bear. Watching Gene and Vicky fall in love was sweet and endearing. I was especially happy for Gene. He never believed that anyone could love him the way he was. Watching his walls come down, one by one, made me love him even more. Of all the Kodiak Point shifters, I truly believed Gene deserved his HEA the most.

The next in the series (after the Christmas novella, "Caribou's Gift") is "Wolf's Capture," where we are even closer to the true enemy of Kodiak Point!

So this is billed as the anti-hero romance. I disagree, he is flawed but by no means the opposite of a hero. He will deny being a good guy, but actions do not lie.

First, a bit of annoyance, I read this immediately after the last book that had a line about Gene trying to avoid a human trying to tag his bear. However, this book starts with them not knowing each other. It is a small constancy thing that annoyed me greatly.

Gene is all gruff and grumpy damaged bear. Sigh, yeah he had me at hello! I do love the damaged bears who are all Alpha. He has been working on being a villain, turns out he cannot fight his nature, he is a hero to the core. OMG, love his nickname and how he uses it constantly!! PIMA <3

Vicky is very shy and reserved and not at all a tough chick. She is totally endearing and the perfect match for Gene. HE needs someone to care for and she needs his strength to bring her out of herself. I really think they are one of favorite couples in the whole series.

The smexy stuff is delicious and ever so hawt!! Love it! Have ice cream and a cold shower ready!!

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Chandra Skyye, who does very well on the narrative potions of the book. Where I did not enjoy her was the dialogue for the two leads. She tries to go too low and gruff with Gen’s voice and far to nasal and whiny for Vicky. Often she comes off sounding immature because of the narration. This is really too bad, because Ms Skyye has great pace and energy for the other parts of the read. I am not sure how I feel about having her continue with the series. I think she has a great voice, just not enjoying all her artistic choices.

Please let the rest of the series come to audio ASAP!! I can not wait for Brody, so yummy I think!! It is also getting very intriguing with this super secret evil foe!

*** I hope this review was useful to you and helped your decision to read or not read this book. I love reading and sharing my opinions with other readers. I listen at double speed; all my impressions of the narration are from that setting. Thanks for taking the time to read my review! Langlais has a way of making me laugh while also leaving me all hot & bothered. Her vibrant descriptions not only set the scene, but also drew me in, making me feel as if I were part of the story rather than simply reading it. The fast paced & exciting plot kept me on my toes. I loved the plot twists that kept the suspense rolling. At the same time, the romance and heat that this couple has were off the charts.

I enjoyed the concept of a multi species clan. It allows for a much more varied cast with a great deal of varying personalities. That said, the main characters in this novel were a fantastically unexpected couple that I had a blast with. The beginnings of Gene’s self-forgiveness were a heart melting addition to this action packed tale. Vicky’s self-doubt combined with her desire to be her best self was exhilarating. And her clumsiness? That just made her adorable.

This novel was a fantastic addition to Langlais’ Kodiak Point series. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to paranormal romance lovers, but I would caution you to read the series in order for context.

Gene blames his friends for leaving him behind in battle and a mysterious figure only referred to as him has fueled his hate. So far, he’s tried to hurt his friends and in return they offer forgiveness. A fight Gene can handle but the emotions and doubt running through his mind is too much so he distracts himself by helping the nerdy and deliciously curvaceous Vicky. She’s visiting the freezing north hoping to take photos and study the beautiful polar bears. Little does she know one just saved her life and is the only one capable of saving her from whoever is out to kill her.

Its bad boy turned good…or less bad in Gene’s case because the polar bear shifter never loses his orneriness. Sometimes his bite is too harsh towards Vicky and it crosses the line into plain dickishness but I’ll give it to him, he doesn’t break character. I don’t see how it can be easy to turn a villain into a hero and Eve Langlais does a really good job at it because she doesn’t try to turn Gene into a knight in shining armor. The male has attitude to spare and earns his way back into the Kodiak Point inner circle his own way and I think it’s well done.

Vicky is hilarious and adds a genuine sweetness to the book. She’s a loner with a love of polar bears. Throw in increasing sass and you got the perfect woman to bring Gene back from his lonely path. Instead of rehashing the same type of couple, they add something new to the series and I love it.

Someone is after Vicky. Or is it him coming after Gene for not taking care of his comrades in Kodiak Point? I thought I had the mystery figured out in the beginning and was a little disappointed it’s easy to figure out but then BAM, curve ball. I like when that happens because predictability can get boring.

I didn’t have the chance to read book 2 before starting this one and I don’t feel like I missed anything. The recap quickly gets you up to speed but I do recommend at least reading Kodiak’s Claim first so you have some familiarity with who the characters are and the roles they play.

This book is fun with a slightly serious undertone to it yet it never overshadows the humor and sweet romance. I really like what Eve has done with this shifter series and look forward to more.

HA! Oh, man, I love Eve Langlais's slightly (sometimes more than) surly heroes and the woman who find them charming in their growly ways.

Gene is... well, he's a little on edge. Rightly so, I'd say. He's not the nicest guy and he's done some not so great things in the past to his former military buddies and their lady friends. He sees himself as someone who can't be redeemed and he acts accordingly.

Good thing Vicky tumbles into his life to show him the error of his ways. And by that, I mean she trusts him. And his bear. Before she even knows it's his bear. It's very sweet. And giggle worthy.

As always, the quips are fun, the characters made me grin, and the shenanigans they get into rocked. Well, not so much for the bad guys, but that a risk the bad guys take when they choose to do bad things to people who can shift shape.

*thumbs up all around*

Sadly, I didn't like this one. Vicky wasn't a character that I could relate to - at all. When she got scared, she'd faint. Um, what? I found that to be a stupid and weird characteristic. She also wasn't the smartest either (and I'm not a fan of idiots).

Gene was ok, I guess. Nothing new with him wanting to be with Vicky but refusing to at first - you know, to keep her from danger (the same way so many alpha male characters behave).

I also guessed, perfectly spot on, of who was gunning for Vicky.

Sadly, I had to remove one whole star because I really didn't like the narrator. Vicky's voice sounded too child like to me (and that's a turnoff). I ended up speeding up the narration just to get through this -- too bad I didn't do this from the beginning. I "think" I would have enjoyed this more if I had read this vs listening to the audio book version. But, since I paid for it, I listened to it.

Disappointed...

The funniest one in the series so far. Pima (pain in my anotherwordfordonkey) is her name, fainting in fear is her game. Her polar bear is there to catch her.

This paranormal romance had a decent plot and I liked the characters but half the book was the main characters negative ruminating. About midway through I started skimming just reading dialogue and action which was good. Exploring in the arctic, Vicky slips into a polar bear. Gene is focusing on vengeance and doesn't have time to help a human in trouble.

omg hahaha I loved this.

Song Choice: "You're The One that I want" by Lo-Fang, "Two Tweeks" by Grizzly Bear (oh yeah i went there)

First thoughts: I thought this was mind-blowingly awesome, this is what I have been searching for! Yes!!! A paranormal romance read with equal amounts of action, adventure and all around good times, equal parts sexy, sweet, and just *swoon* So I should state that I totally cheated. I was so intrigued by this "anti-hero" title the book had on amazon so I was like i see its book three, but can I read it out of order? I did my research i realized the first two books were different couples and after reading this one i realize their stories are very interconnected but I also could read this without being too lost. I figured it out pretty quickly, go me! ;) Anyways just awesome

Thoughts on Plot: Have I mentioned how much I loved this? Not only was it well-written, the action scenes were well done that i could clearly see what was going on without the whole messy confusion of "what the fuck just happened"-ness that tends to happen. I loved the pace of the book, I loved the idea behind it and i was up late late last night just telling myself every book-reader's mantra: just one more chapter. Until i gave up to exhaustion. I think that this book while it obviously might be shaped by the two before it (well Ghost's aka Gene's story) it was an easy transition if you wanted to try this one first. I am happily going to read the first book and the last one that came out because holy god I fucking loved this book. I am sorry I know i have said that a lot and its not helpful what so ever but its how i feel. If you are a fan of paranormal books that don't just rotate around the sex between characters but rather a good adventure-heart-racing-exciting-thriller, this is for you. I promise you that.

Characters:

Gene: HE is the anti-hero i spoke up earlier. I am *guessing* aka not confirmed but im pretty damn - aka sort of confirmed from this book that he does appear both in book one and two and mayhaps I would have been even more intrigued by his story if i read them first but i think i also got him on as a clean-slate if that makes sense. I got him like Vicky did. His past wasnt there to taint him for me. While he was a crass asshole I did find his character interesting and intriguing. Obviously there was more too his past from pretty much what i gathered in this book i wondered if they go into more detail in the first two, mayhaps but either way i happily enjoyed him. Yeah he was a big jerk but he never stated to be anything else but it is obvious that he is down-right a good guy.

Vicky: She was my kinda of MC. I always like to read about the really unexpected and unusual MCs why? Because I do :P and she really fit the bill, a widower, with a small fortunate left behind to her from her descended parents, who is a "geek" <-- though i am still trying to find out how she is a geek - maybe the polar bear obsession? Glasses-wearing and who faints at the hint of danger, yeah I fucking loved her. She was a breath of fresh air, its nice to read about someone so different from the norm and I found that she was while timid at first really grew both characters did and I found that just overall making this an awesome, awesome read.

Not going to lie im sort of in love with Brody so i might cheat some more and check out his book next then return to the others after but Kyle who we get literally a name mention and what he was doing at the time super intrigued me. Yes i am just weird like that, I latch onto characters and hold them close. So Yesss i will be continuing on with this series, and going back and also checking out many more from this author if this book is any indication on how she writes.

My review and an extended sample of the audiobook are posted at Hotlistens.com.

This was yet another great book in the Kodiak Point series. Once again, like the previous books in this series, I’ve already read this book before venturing into the audio. I found that I enjoyed Gene and Vicky’s story even more the second time around.

We have already met Gene in the previous two books. He has not been a very nice guy. He has terrorized Kodiak Point throughout the first two books, but he hasn’t done anything that is unredeemable. He feels that the guys in Kodiak Point left him behind back when they were in the military together and that he was just getting his revenge. The boys thought he was dead, so they didn’t leave him behind on purpose.

Gene has decided to go live in the wilds of Alaska, while he figures out how he feels out these ideas. He is spending most of his time in his polar bear form eating seals and raiding camps for pepper (easier to terrorize tourist than to go to town to get pepper).

Vicky is a newly widowed heiress. She doesn’t need a job, but doesn’t want to just sit at home and do nothing. She is overweight, nerdy and clumsy as an ox. She decides to go on an adventure to the north in the Alaska to research her beloved polar bears in the wild. This is all well and good until she slips while on a hike, slides down a hill and is stopped from sliding into the water by hitting a polar bear.

This is a very cute story with grumpy Gene who is trying to avoid everyone and prove to everybody what a horrible person he is. Vicky sees both Gene and her scared polar bear as her guardian angels because they keep appearing out of thin air whenever she gets into trouble. Boy, she seems to get into trouble a lot.

Some of my favorite quotes:

“Where are your glasses?”
She shrugged. “Lost. How did you know I wore some?”
“You squint, Pima.”
“Pima? My name is Vicky.”
“I know what your name is. But I choose to call you Pima. Pain in my ass.”
“Well excuse me, Nobody,” she sassed back with the first ounce of fire he’d seen in her.

All the arguments in the world and it boiled down to he couldn’t let her come to harm because of him. Bloody chivalrous side, it would emerge at the most inopportune times.
Since when do I have fucking morals? And how do I get rid of them? Morals got in the way of violence and revenge. And Gene did so enjoy dishing out violent vengeance.

Narration
While I didn’t love Chandra Skyye‘s narration, I didn’t hate it either. I think she did a good job with both women and men’s voices. However, it seemed to me that Vicky had the exact same voice as Jan from the previous book. The biggest thing that bother me about this is Vicky is Hispanic and the voice didn’t have even the slightest bit of accent.

I like to thank Tantor Audio for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Ever since the first book in this series, I was excited to hear things from Gene’s POV. It’s so interesting to start him off as the villain, and what we saw of him in the second book just added to my curiosity. I loved this story and I loved how Langlais able to bend Gene’s character and make the reader feel for him. It helped immensely that Vicky was such a loveable character. She was an accident prone klutz and constantly found herself needing to be saved, but along the way she grew as a person. She found her confidence and together they became stronger and better. I loved that, as well as the look at the previous two couples and the glimpse into the next book. I love this series and absolutely recommend this series to fans of shifters and the paranormal.

Gene and Vicky's book wasn't as good as the other's in the series, there wasn't as much humour or there wasn't for me and it was a bit predictable with who was trying to kill Vicky.

Vicky was a hoot. She loved polar bears and although fairly timid (she faints a lot), she took a trip to the Artic hoping to see one. But she keeps having "accidents" and being saved by a polar bear and then a hot, naked guy.

Gene just wants to drown his sorrows, but after being run into by Vicky, his interest is aroused. He wants to keep her safe from the people after her and the ones after him. Brody tracks them down and wants Gene to come back to Kodiak Point.

We get some closure for Vicky and learn a little bit more about the common enemy.

In general for all of Langlais' books: These are light and fluffy, funny and sexy, and easy, quick reads. Great poolside or beach reads, or when your brain is overwhelmed by RL. My only peeve (and this may just be because I binged her books) is that she constantly uses "portal" when she means "door" or "doorway". The books could use one last round of editing, but the errors are minor and don't take away from the enjoyment of reading them.

Meh. I could not stand Vicky. She is such a change from the previous sassy heroines that the difference was jarring. She faints from fear CONSTANTLY, is unbelievably clumsy, and was generally a marshmallow. I didn't buy her for Gene's mate. This was not as charming or as amusing as the first two books in the series.

I wish the series were just a trilogy. I liked the characters in this one, but am finding the dialog a little redundant. I'll take a break before continuing the series to find out who the bad guy is.

What a Fun Read
Polar Bared Book #3 (Kodiak Point) Eve Langlais
Wow I was glad to read some of the reviews that mentioned it being a fun read. So I wasn’t the only one who thought this was cute in its own way and fun. I have to admit in some of the parts I actually was giggling out loud.
I was hoping we would see the vengeance bent Gene turn himself around. He suffered from PTSD, was a loner and was lonely (whether he’d admit it or not) his heart and soul were broken/hurt because he felt he was left behind to rot in a POW prison. Even though he was hell bent on taking out all his military buddies for leaving him behind, I don’t think this was his doing. Known as “Ghost” because of his stealth and ability to get in do the kill and get out without being detected, made this solider lethal. So to have him go off on a vengeance spree could have been deadly. But was Gene’s vengeance his own doing, or was he somehow manipulated/brainwashed into thinking his brothers left him behind. The “he” had his own agenda and he was using Gene to take down the Alpha of Kodiak Point
In Outfoxed by love you actually got a little bit of an up close and personal feel for Gene, and when our Moose forgave him Gene just freaked and didn’t know how to handle it. So when Polar Bared opened with Gene trying to bring himself back to the vengeance mindset he was having a difficult time with it.
As the next few chapters unfold we meet Vicky, a very wealthy, shy, timid, totally clumsy and abused female. She would flinch if anyone raised a voice to her. Conditioned this way by her father and deceased husband. She had a pretty low self-esteem and would never talk back or speak up for fear of retaliation. She had this fixation of polar bears and decided to go on a research expedition to re-invent herself. Since no one was really paying too much attention to her she decided to venture out on her own. Bad idea, but she did it anyway. When she got herself in a bit of a pickle she pulled up her big girl pants and decided to go for it. Yeah that didn’t work out so well. She went crashing down the ice ledge and landed right into the side of a Polar Bear. She hadn’t realized that at first until she realized she had a face full of fur. When the lump moved is when she literally face planted into the ice. You see when Vicky gets scared or stressed she faints. I really giggled here. It was just so cute especially the big bad ass Gene’s reaction. When she does come to a very necked gorgeous hunk of a man is standing over her. Again you have to giggle here.
As it turns out someone is trying to kill Vicky as well as “he” is trying to kill Gene. So you have the two of them running from enemies. Gene doesn’t like that Vicky flinches when spoken too and he figures someone has hurt her and his inner bear does not like the implications.
But in the end Vicky does some pretty amazing things and Gene is so proud of her. After he leaves her for her own good he ends up coming back and well yes it’s a really cute ending. Well not all is cute, they do get the person who was trying to kill her for her money wait until you see who it was (I kinda had a feeling it was who I thought it was).
The way Ms. Langlais ended this read was so cute I loved it. I could just picture the scene playing out. Put a huge smile on my face. Now that being said the way she introduced the teaser for the next book (I think it will be Brody’s) was genius totally totally genius. I loved it. Again I give this read 5* I just love her work.

Review orginally posted at RabidReads.com.

Polar Bared is book three in a humorous paranormal romance shifter series by Canadian author Eve Langlais.  In this book, we have an anti-hero Gene, a polar bear and former military guy suffering from PTSD.  He blames his military unit for his capture and inability to rescue him.  He is set on vengeance.

Vicky is a heavier woman who had recently lost her husband.  She is independently wealthy, so she doesn't really need to work.  She decides to go do research on polar bears up in northern Canada.  She isn't quite the adventurous type.  She wears glasses, is clumsy and overweight, which doesn't make things easy for her in the Arctic.  Oh, and she faints a lot.  This doesn't bode well for her when she slips and slides down the ice right into the side of a scared, grouchy polar bear.

This is a series that is funny, sexy, suspenseful, action packed and did I mention funny.  I mean you have a gruff, sexy, scared old polar bear chasing after a geeky, overweight, clumsy heiress.  They are running from some really bad guys chasing them.  The bad guys came at them with were-rabbits.

"Evil bunnies attack. Did they smack you in the shins with their big, floppy ears?"

"Not to mention, a rabid rabbit bit my leg. A wolf, that's respectable. A caribou gore, a fine battle wound, but getting chewed on by a bloody bunny, I won't have it."

This is a third book in the series and while you would probably be okay if you read the series out of order, I think you would get a lot more from reading them in order.  They are all great books.  Book two even has a moose shifter for the hero, so you'll want to check that out.

Gene, the villain in earlier books, gets a chance to get the girl, in this case - Vicky, a nerdy girl on a research trip to the Arctic to see some polars.

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between

-Best book of the series: I’ve had issues with the earlier two books because of insta-love and such, and I honestly wondered at myself for pre-ordering this. But I’m glad I did. This book let the romance build, AND was as funny if not funnier than the earlier books. I really enjoyed it. The love scenes were there but not plentiful, there’s instant attraction but not love and there is a difference.

-Love me some anti-hero: A big part of why I loved it was Gene. He’s done some sketchy things but the entire time you understood why, and I completely empathized with him.

-Quirky heroine: Vicky goes through her own personal growth as well and while she has some quirks that drove me a tad insane (the fainting, oi vey), I liked her for Gene.

-Not so much a standalone: it’s definitely the third book in the series, and while you could try to read it on its own, there’s several scenes that won’t really work if you don’t have the background.

The Bottom Line
I’ve enjoyed the ‘verse created, but this is definitely my fave of the series so far. I’d recommend for fans of funny, sexy, shifter romances.

Eve Langlais is one of my go to authors for shifter books, especially ones that have humor. Polar Bared has Gene (the bad guy for the first few books in the series) meeting Vicki while she is on the look-out for polar bears. A mystery is afoot, and someone is probably trying to kill both Gene and Vicki. Gene considers himself a villain, but Vicki just doesn't view him the same way. They are a cute couple, both with their own issues, but stronger when they get together.

+humor
+alpha hottie
+sexiness
+shifter universe

I really enjoyed Vicki's and Gene's inner monologues (a Langlais specialty) and getting to know Brody (he's the main character of book 4), who provided a lot of the humor in previous books but now is showing his alpha strength side.

This is 4 1/2 stars for me, and I round up, so it's five stars. If you enjoy a sexy shifter meeting his curvy mate, then this is a book for you.

Thanks for reading!

I really enjoyed this one. The idea of the villain turning into the bad guy is one that I don't see explored enough, or maybe I'm just missing them all. I loved that Gene was a total grump for the most part throughout the story, and that even though Vicki fainted a lot, her first reaction to learning Gene was a polar bear shifter was to throw her arms around his neck and hug him like she just saw a Unicorn for the first time and was told she could keep it. That was funny.

I really need to read the first book in this series, then I'll have a better idea of all the other bad boy things Gene has done while trying to get back at his former friends, but for now this was a very satisfying read that I would recommend to anyone who loves shifters, but wants something a little different than werewolves.

Also, getting a scene of Gene in his polar bear form snoozing and swimming in the arctic was fun :D

I am definitely a Gene fan after this story.

He was already looking for his friends without knowing. All his actions showed care and a gentle heart.
He made the whole story/ book for me without much help from his PIMA. Her character didn't impress me as the others but hey, could have been worse for Gene.
I am more intrigued by the was plot is shaping and I am looking forward to finding out who the villain is.
